Joël Taluau is a fabulous grower in St-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil, known for making some of the purest expressions of Cabernet Franc in the Loire. All his hand-harvested cuvées are based on vine age and soil composition, and the wines are fermented and aged in stainless steel with a light fining and no filtration before bottling. The Vieilles Vignes, from a single plot planted in 1934, has power, depth and grace—it's no wonder why it's their flagship wine.

100 points Wine Advocate: "The 2003 Lafite Rothschild comes as close to perfection as any of the great Lafites made over the past three decades (1982, 1986, 1996, 2000, 2005, 2008, 2009 and 2010). This sensational effort came in at 12.7% natural alcohol, it is made in the style of one of this estate’s great classics, the 1959. Composed of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it exhibits a dense ruby/purple color to the rim along with a luxurious bouquet of cedarwood, lead pencil shaving, white chocolate, cocoa a...

95 points Wine Advocate: "The spectacular 2003 Pontet Canet is still incredibly young and vigorous. This full-bodied classic boasts a dense purple color as well as a superb nose of graphite, creme de cassis, forest floor, licorice and a hint of truffles, low acidity, and extravagant richness. Most of the tannins have been resolved in this superstar of the vintage. It should continue to drink well for 10-15+ years. (RP) 95+" (08/2014) 93 points James Suckling: "Pure ripe fruit on the nose with raspberries and blueberries. Full bodied, with round and sil...

95 points James Suckling: "This has very ripe fruit, but not overripe. Hints of prunes but mostly currants and spices on the nose, mainly cinnamon. Full-bodied with firm tannins yet polished and velvety. It still has an incredible freshness. I love it." (07/2013) 95 points Wine Advocate: "Made from a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot, this spectacular 2003 hits all the sweet spots on the palate. A glorious bouquet of cedarwood, jammy black currants, cherries, licorice and truffle is followed by a dense, opulently textured,...

99 points Int'l Wine Review: "The 2003 Chateau Pavie is an incredible wine, offering intoxicating aromas of blackberries, dark cherries, dried plum, pipe tobacco, madras curry, spring floral, tar, pain grille and roasted coffee. This is extremely well made with a wonderful rich yet firm texture with impressive length on the finish. A stunning wine that even a decade later is still youthful, barely showing any signs of age. (JD)" (06/2013) 97 points Wine Spectator: "This is a stunner, with the warmth of the vintage marrying ideally with the relative coo...

92 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Very spicy and perfumed, with loads of iron, garrigue, blood, and licorice aromas that are carried by sweet red fruit and floral nuances, the 2003 Henri Bonneau Châteauneuf-du-Pape sports a transparent, ruby red color, to go with its medium to full bodied palate and overall perfumed, sleek character. Showing surprising freshness and elegance, as well as good acidity and solid underlying structure, this improves over the evening with more sweet fruit and additional complexity showing. Beautiful now with a short decant, or better ye...

96 points James Suckling: "Sweet tobacco and plum with hints of leather and cassis on the nose. Full bodied, with big velvety tannins and lots of fruit. Very rich and powerful, even chewy. Give this some time to mellow out." (03/2011) 95 points Decanter: "Not surprisingly for such a hot vintage, the wine has a degree of solar expression, but it also presents freshness and elegance, and has no element of cooked fruit whatsoever. Complex scents of dried flowers mingle with those of gentle spices. The powerful, fleshy attack is juicy but on the palate the...

97 points James Suckling: "This is more exotic and monstrous than the 2000. It is like a muscle builder, with lots of round and rich tannins and a core of dark fruits like black cherries and blueberries. Still very young, but structured and in need of five more years. " (05/2012) 96 points Decanter: "It's still full of life and tasting absolutely delicious right now. If you have reservations about Léoville's ability to welcome you in, this is the vintage to try. Pencil lead and slate give the character of the soils, while liquorice, black cherry, blueb...

100 points Wine Advocate: " Administrator Frederic Engerer says the 2003 is “the sexiest Latour ever made.” He also described it as “the 1990 without any brettanomyces.” I loved this wine from the barrel and was fortunate enough to be able to purchase a small quantity, enjoying every bottle I have had. A profound example of Chateau Latour, the full-bodied, opulent 2003 is already performing well at age eleven, which is somewhat atypical. The pH is a relatively high 3.8, which also indicates low acidity. The wine is very ripe, but not over-ripe, offers gr...

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Normally one of the most elegant of Pauillacs, the 2003 is big and dense. These dark tannins mask delicious black fruit, flavors of spice and layers of acidity. This is going to develop relatively fast, despite the density of the wine, just because it is so rich. " (05/2006) 93 points Wine Spectator: "Very pretty aromas of plum, blackberry, chocolate, espresso and cherry follow through to a full-bodied palate, with ultrasilky tannins, refined fruit and a long, caressing finish. This is fine and refined with a wonderful textu...

Layers and layers of flavors." (04/2011) 96 points Wine Enthusiast: "Restrained power combine with great style and elegance in this beautiful wine. The tannins are certainly solid and serious, but then they are also sweet, dusty ripe, sustaining dense dark plum flavors and only a hint of wood. 96 points Wine Advocate: "The spectacular 2003 Leoville Poyferre exhibits a dense purple color with a touch of lightening at the edge as well as notes of creosote, barbecue smoke, jammy black currants, licorice and spice box. This intense, voluptuously textured, full-bodied St.-Julien possesses low acidity and ripe tannin. (RP)" (08/2014) 95 points James Suckling: "So much blue fruit here, together with mushrooms and dried cherries. Some flowers, too. Full-bodied with dusty, chewy tannins. Velvety. 95 points Vinous: "A heady, exotic wine, the 2003 Mouton Rothschild takes hold of all the senses. The ripeness and exuberance of the year comes through in spades as this dramatic, opulent wine shows off its radiant personality. The 2003 can be enjoyed now, but it could also use another few years for the tannins to soften. Still, the 2003 is pretty hard to resist today. This is an exceptional, deeply satisfying Mouton endowed with notable richness but also exceptional balance. Hints of toffee, torrefaction and dark spices are laced into the finish. In 200...

99 points Wine Advocate: "Am I being too stingy with the 2003 Chateau Margaux? A wine of extraordinary complexity and intensity, it reveals a deep purple color, a style not unlike the 1990 Margaux (possibly even more concentrated), a velvety texture, and notes of spring flowers interwoven with camphor, melted licorice, creme de cassis, and pain grille. Not a blockbuster, it offers extraordinary intensity as well as a surreal delicacy/lightness. There is riveting freshness to this offering, which tips the scales at a lofty (for this estate) 13.5% alcohol,...

96 points Wine Advocate: "A gorgeous expression of old vine Grenache that is at the top of the vintage, the 2003 Mas de Boislauzon Cuvée du Quet is knockout stuff that is incredibly youthful and borderline primary. Offering up classic Châteauneuf du Pape aromas and flavors of black raspberries, kirsch, licorice, roasted garrigue, seaweed and spiced meats, it flows onto the palate with a full-bodied, seamless and beautifully pure texture that has no hard edges, awesome purity and a focused, clean finish. Chewy, rich and voluptuous, yet also pure, precise ...

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Managed by Jean-Hubert Delon of Léoville Las Cases, this is without equal in the Medoc appellation. It shows breeding, depth of flavor, beautifully crafted tannins and fine, rich fruit without the overripeness so characteristic of 2003. With its structure, acidity and delicious fruit, this will age as well as any wine from a more classy appellation." (05/2006) 89 points Wine Advocate: "The dark plum/purple-tinged 2003 Potensac is a sleeper of the vintage. Sweet, exotic scents of mincemeat, black currants, cherries, and crush...

95 points Robert Parker. "A spectacular offering, and one of the Southern Rhone’s top successes in the irregular 2003 vintage is Soumade’s 2003 Fleur de Confiance Rasteau. This blockbuster wine boasts notes of plum liqueur, blueberries, blackberries, figs, scorched earth, espresso, and flowers. Tipping the scales at 16+% alcohol, it is almost surreal in its richness and power. Romero believes it will last for two decades or more, but I would recommend drinking it over the next 14-15 years. This amazing cuvee is one of the finest Southern Rhone wines I ha...

Mr. Cazenave has become one of the most renowned producers of Armagnac on the market today. His beautiful estate in the rolling hills outside of Mauléon d'Armagnac is planted with old-vine Folle Blanche in "sable fauve" and sandy clay soils. Not a native of Gascogne, he managed a large medical laboratory in Nice and began farming in Armagnac after serving in Algeria. An honorary Gascognian, he made a commitment to producing the finest Armagnac in the early 1990s and spared no expense to create the finest eau-de-vie possible. Here are the results of that ...

Wine Spectator: " *Smart Buys* Aromas of blackberry, spices, chocolate and meat follow through to a full-bodied palate, with lots of juicy fruit. Luscious finish. Gorgeous. This has a new winery, but the clay soil of the vineyards really helped." (03/2006)

94 points James Suckling: "Lots of aromas of roasted fruit, such as blueberries and raisins, and spices. It has full body with plenty of velvety tannins and a long, slightly chewy finish. Needs another two or three years to come together but outstanding now. " (07/2013) 94 points Wine Advocate: "A hot, dry summer resulted in a tiny production of under 10,000 cases of 2003 Ducru Beaucaillou from yields of 35 hectoliters per hectare. This beauty boasts a deep plum/ruby/purple color with a touch of lightening at the edge. Aromas of licorice, creme de cass...

100 points James Suckling: "A very flamboyant and exciting Latour. Sliced black truffles, sweet leather, spices, and dark fruits on the nose. Full and powerful, with roasted fruit and leather undertones. Big and velvety, with polished, almost dusty tannins, and a super long finish. This leans more towards sexy than intellectual. Very concentrated." Bid on this 5-bottle lot of 2003 Margaux, Margaux (98RP, 97JS, 96ST, 96WE, 95WS). Wine Advocate: "This was the finest performance by this wine that I have seen since it was released. I did not expect the 2003 Chateau Margaux to show this well in a vintage where the southern part of the Medoc was clearly less impressive than the north. However, it is a beautiful, dark plum/purple-tinged effort with sensational aromatics, a full-bodied mouthfeel, and a youthfulness, precision and freshness that belie what one generally associates with this vintage. It can be drunk now and over the next 15-20 years. Kudos to Chateau Margaux. (RP)" (08/2014)

94 points Wine Advocate: "A healthy, youthful dark plum/ruby/purple color is followed by a bouquet of smoke, barbecued meats, black currants and new saddle leather. With full body and sweet tannin, this 2003 is strutting its stuff. Although it is not as fine as the 1989, 1990, or 2000, it is a complex, classic Pauillac to enjoy over the next decade. Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2003 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay 1er Cru "Clos des Chenes" (93BH, 93DC, 93ST, (90-92RP), 91JM, 90VN). Decanter: "Domaine Lafarge is a top producer within Volnay, and this is one the AC’s best sites. Great colour and aromas full of spices and red fruits. There is plenty of complexity and character here with a lovely softness to the fruit. Sweet, some leafy notes, good acidity, beautifully integrated oak. Elegant, rich and well-balanced, this has lift as well as density and is undoubtedly a fine 1er cru. (AH)" (11/2019)

100 points Wine Advocate: "Amazing! The limestone soils of Ausone appear to have been the perfect foil for resisting the extreme heat and drought of June, July and August, 2003. This black/purple-colored effort boasts a glorious nose of violets, truffles, lead pencil shavings, blueberry and blackberry liqueur. Full-bodied with staggering concentration, a voluptuous texture, low acidity and well-integrated, melted tannins, this deep, multidimensional, profound Bordeaux is beginning to drink exceptionally well. It should continue to do so for another two d...
