Domaine Séailles' Armagnacs from the 1970s are absolutely lights out. The balance between fine French oak and shockingly bright fruit—especially for such old brandies—is hauntingly beautiful. The tiny estate only has 2.5 acres of Ugni Blanc dedicated to Armagnac on Ténarèze's famous clay limestone soils, and they manage to produce extremely high quality brandy for very affordable prices. The '75 sits at a wonderful 46% ABV and is so approachable that it may just become the go-to pour for you and your guests.

Chateau de la Grangerie is a property that was built in the 17th century right next to an old monastery. Vinous: "The 1975 Pichon-Lalande has long been one of my favorite vintages from the decade, and this recent example attests that it is holding up. It has a beautiful bouquet of red berry fruit, roasted chestnut, leather and sage, utterly harmonious and showing commendable vitality after 43 years. The palate is medium-bodied with melted tannin. It is quite savory in style and the Merlot is fully in control, to the extent that it feels almost Right Bank in style. Maybe you could quibble about the slight metallic finish; nevertheless, if intent on buying a Left Bank from this vintage, I would probably come here. Tasted at a vertical tasting at the château. Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 1975 Clerc Milon, Pauillac. In 1970 the underachieving fifth growth Clerc Milon was purchased by Baron Philippe de Rothschild, a watershed occasion for the estate, which had been producing mediocre wines at best. Strange that the wines weren't always spectacular, if you consider that the vineyards of Clerc Milon lay sandwiched between Mouton and Lafite. Well, by 1975 Rothschild had turned around this venerable estate. This represents a considerable value in mature Bordeaux.

Bid on this 5-bottle lot of 1975 Léoville-Las-Cases, St-Julien (94JS, 92JD, 92RP). James Suckling: "This came as a big surprise because I usually associate outstanding bottles of Bordeaux from this vintage with only the Right Bank or Graves. But the 1975 Las Cases is superb. It showed gorgeous aromas of dried berry and tobacco with iodine and shells. It was full body, firm with pleasantly chewy tannins and a chalk, berry and lavender aftertaste. Fresh finish.
