Domaine Séailles' Armagnacs from the 1970s are absolutely lights out. The balance between fine French oak and shockingly bright fruit—especially for such old brandies—is hauntingly beautiful. The tiny estate only has 2.5 acres of Ugni Blanc dedicated to Armagnac on Ténarèze's famous clay limestone soils, and they manage to produce extremely high quality brandy for very affordable prices. The '75 sits at a wonderful 46% ABV and is so approachable that it may just become the go-to pour for you and your guests.

Chateau de la Grangerie is a property that was built in the 17th century right next to an old monastery. The church and the housing for its servants was actually built in the 11th and 12th centuries and since the Armagnac is aged inside that facility, it might be the only spirit at K&L matured on hallowed grounds. Like many Tenereze producers, Grangerie distills only Ugni Blanc for its brandies. However, the sandy and gravel-rich soils are much more like the terrain found in the Bas-Armagnac. They fill about ten barrels a year, two of which are used for ...

93 points Wine Spectator: "Fascinating aromas of plums, minerals and mint, with a hint of peat. Medium- to full-bodied, with firm tannins and a long finish. Plenty of life left in it. This was rather controversial at the NY tasting, but I loved it.--Latour vertical. Drink now through 2015." (08/2000) 90 points Wine Advocate: "The dark ruby/garnet-colored 1975 Latour offers up a dry, mineral, tobacco, stony-scented nose with red and black currants competing with cedar, spice box, and balsam wood aromas. Hard and dense in the mouth, with tough, astringen...

93 points Vinous: "The 1975 Ducru Beaucaillou is a vintage that I had not encountered for 15 years but my God, what a wonderful wine! Surely the best between 1970 and 1982, the 1975 is beautifully balanced with ample fruit on the quite precocious nose that is more akin to a 1982 or 1985. Certainly unlike some of its more esteemed counterparts, this 1975 shows no signs of drying out or hard tannins, one of the best I have encountered for some time. (NM)" (05/2018) 92 points Decanter: "A bit shy at first, the 1975 Ducru-Beaucaillou is more vibrant and fr...

When looking for great wines from Bordeaux we often think of the bigger names and overlook other appellations by fear of the unknown. Well, fear no more: Moulis is here to save the day. The smallest appellation in the Médoc (surface wise) with only 600 hectares, which represent 4% of the region, offers wines of high standards as the 1975 Ch. Poujeaux ($79.99) can attest. This wine offers delicate red fruit on the nose. The wine has fresh and still lively sweet slightly red berry fruit on the palate. WOW!!! You want all wines to achieve this with age. It ...

91 points Decanter: "Jean-Michel Cazes’ third vintage, and his records of the harvest note excellent weather conditions almost every day up in Pauillac. Harvest of Merlot began at Lynch Bages on September 25 (it had been expected to start on the 29th until the rains fell) and lasted until October 12th (a Sunday when Cazes described the fermentations as going ‘very very well’). Only one or two vats needed chaptilisation because natural sugar levels were so high. On the nose, a touch of band aid suggests brett, but this soon clears and the wine is full of ...

Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 1975 Pichon-Lalande, Pauillac (93VN, 93WS, 92RP). Vinous: "The 1975 Pichon-Lalande has long been one of my favorite vintages from the decade, and this recent example attests that it is holding up. It has a beautiful bouquet of red berry fruit, roasted chestnut, leather and sage, utterly harmonious and showing commendable vitality after 43 years. The palate is medium-bodied with melted tannin. It is quite savory in style and the Merlot is fully in control, to the extent that it feels almost Right Bank in style. Maybe you could quibble about the slight metallic finish; nevertheless, if intent on buying a Left Bank from this vintage, I would probably come here. Tasted at a vertical tasting at the château. Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 1975 Clerc Milon, Pauillac. In 1970 the underachieving fifth growth Clerc Milon was purchased by Baron Philippe de Rothschild, a watershed occasion for the estate, which had been producing mediocre wines at best. Strange that the wines weren't always spectacular, if you consider that the vineyards of Clerc Milon lay sandwiched between Mouton and Lafite. Well, by 1975 Rothschild had turned around this venerable estate. This represents a considerable value in mature Bordeaux.

Bid on this bottle of 1975 Ducru-Beaucaillou, St-Julien (92DC, 90VN). Decanter: "A bit shy at first, the 1975 Ducru-Beaucaillou is more vibrant and fresher with air. Fresh with a menthol hit, the bouquet shows red-dark berries, blackcurrant, spices and tobacco aromas. The palate is perfectly balanced with fine-grained tannins, tension and freshness. This is not the densest of wines but it's a very elegant and refined version. (YC)" (05/2021)

Bid on this 5-bottle lot of 1975 Léoville-Las-Cases, St-Julien (94JS, 92JD, 92RP). James Suckling: "This came as a big surprise because I usually associate outstanding bottles of Bordeaux from this vintage with only the Right Bank or Graves. But the 1975 Las Cases is superb. It showed gorgeous aromas of dried berry and tobacco with iodine and shells. It was full body, firm with pleasantly chewy tannins and a chalk, berry and lavender aftertaste. Fresh finish. It's still so beautiful. " (06/2016)
