93 points James Suckling: "A firm, chewy Brunello with cherry, walnut and black-truffle character, as well as tile undertones. It’s full-bodied with dark fruit and mahogany and cedar undertones. Tight and wooded at the moment, but should come round with bottle age. Give it time. Try after 2023." (11/2020) K&L Notes: Poggiarellino is an evolving star in our Direct Import portfolio. From Montalcino, this tiny winery is making superb wines at stunning prices. We've been importing them for over a decade and their wines have simply gotten better and better.

This Chianti is 95% Sangiovese and comes from the La Tancia estate, which was originally built in the 14th century during the reign of the Medicis. The property is now owned by winemaker Domenico Silla. Winery tasting notes: "An intense and deep ruby red color with floral notes of violets and iris combined with a typical character of red fruits. It has a harmonious, dry and savory flavor."

Poggiarellino is a small property in the north of Montalcino and is not far from Altesino. They started making wine with the 1996 vintage and slowly grew their production. K&L started importing their wine with the 2000 vintage. Their Brunello di Montalcino production is usually about 450 cases to 500 cases and about half of that number for the Rosso di Montalcino. The Brunello is aged in 25hl Slavonian oak barrels and the Rosso di Montalcino is aged in stainless steel tanks.

92 points James Suckling: "Plums, cherry stones, button mushrooms, white pepper and bark on the nose. Lemon and cardamom too. Medium-bodied with vibrant acidity and fine, powdery tannins. Savory. " (06/2022) 91 points Vinous: "The 2020 Chianti Classico Berardenga is a classic Fèlsina wine. It can be enjoyed now or cellared for 10-15 years. Classic Fèlsina savory, floral and tobacco accents play off a core of sweet Sangiovese fruit. This heady, strapping wine has a ton to offer. Time in the glass brings out gorgeous aromatic presence. 92 points James Suckling: "Plums, red cherries and sage on the nose. A bright and cool palate with spices and a lot of fresh herbs. Dark chocolate and dried flowers come through at the finish. From organically grown grapes." (09/2021) 92 points Wine Spectator: "This red is packed with ripe black cherry, blackberry, violet and tobacco flavors. Vibrant and balanced, with a lingering aftertaste of dark fruit, earth and spice notes. (BS)" (12/2021) 90 points Wine Advocate: "With 50,000 bottles made, the organic 2019 Chianti Classico is all Sangiovese fro...
93 points Vinous: "The bouquet on the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is almost confectionary, with sweet Christmas spice giving way to sugar-dusted plums, black cherries, cloves and hints of cocoa. It washes across the palate with velvety waves of polished red fruits, as hints of sour citrus and inner rose tones create contrast and balance. This tapers off structured with fine tannins, a twang of tart black currant and salted licorice. The 2016 needs time to unwind and integrate the wood spice that currently dominates the nose, but there’s a lot und...

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "New leather, ripe black-skinned fruit, tobacco and menthol are just some of the aromas you'll find in this delicious red. Full-bodied and elegantly structured, the accessible palate delivers dried cherry, raspberry jam, licorice and a hint of white pepper set against velvety tannins. (KO)" (04/2022) 93 points James Suckling: "Extremely refined and together 2017, with round, fine tannins that show tension and balance. Medium to full body, creamy texture and a delicious finish. Savory and juicy. " (10/2021) 93 points Wine Ad...

94 points Vinous: "The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva does a great job of taking the warmth of the vintage mixed with extended aging to create a beautifully balanced wine. It blends rich exotic spices with black cherries, wild herbs, hints of leather and flowery undergrowth to form an alluring bouquet that keeps you coming back to the glass. It’s creamy in texture, casting a savory display of wild berry fruit across a medium bodied frame, as salty minerals saturate, and lively acids maintain freshness. Youthfully dense and poised, this tapers off to...

91 points James Suckling: "A seductive nose of plums, wild raspberries, fresh cherries, sage, pine cones, white pepper and musk. Medium-bodied with finely knit tannins. Creamy and soft finish. Drink or hold." (07/2022) 90 points Vinous: "The 2020 Chianti Colli Senesi is bold, powerful and super-expressive. Cedar, tobacco, leather, dried herbs and perfumed earthy undertones give the 2020 its distinctive aromatic profile. This mid-weight, layered Colli Senesi has a ton to offer. The purity of the fruit comes through nicely, especially with air. It's Coll...

94 points Wine Advocate: "This is a second single-vineyard wine made by Cortonesi. The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Poggiarelli reveals dense and rich fiber that wraps thickly but smoothly over the palate. This wine is woven tightly with soft layers of black fruit, plum, spice, tar and licorice. It is important to underline the difference between the more compact and vertical La Mannella against this more generous and broad-based wine, especially when making food-pairing decisions. This is your proverbial charred-meat wine. (ML)" (02/2022) 93 points Jam...

92 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2020 Chianti Classico is ripe with juicy red and black berry fruit, offering notes of candied black raspberry, crushed violet, and forest floor. Medium to full-bodied and savory, with tart black cherry, orange oil, fine tannins, and dusty earth, it has a driving persistent energy through the mid-palate and is harmonious in its balance between its more youthful primary fruit and light savory touch throughout. (AF)" (01/2023) 92 points Vinous: "The 2020 Chianti Classico is striking. Bright, punchy and vibrant, the 2020 possess...

91 points James Suckling: "Lots of cherry and orange peel character on the nose follow through to a full body with loads of ripe fruit and round tannins. Tangy at the end. Needs time to come together and calm down. Try after 2024." (11/2022) 91 points Vinous: "The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino bursts up from the glass with a perfumed display of raspberries, sweet spice, chalky minerals and crushed violets. This is rich and potent, delivering masses of fleshy red and black berry fruits that drench the palate, yet balance is well-maintained by salty minera...

95 points Vinous: "Good full red. Wonderfully clean, enticing aromas of red cherry, minerals, white pepper, aromatic herbs and smoke. Sappy and densely packed, showing terrific mineral lift to the rich ripe red berry and saline flavors. Bright and focused on the long, slowly building finish. Beautiful wine. (ID)" (04/2018)

From the importer: "The owner, Piero Lanza, believes in an almost fanatical attention to vineyard work. His goal is to set the stage for healthy vines, and ultimately, beautiful wines, by caring for the land holistically, in rhythm with the seasons, and as custodian for its natural biodiversity and richness. The results are healthy grapes with the highest degree of concentration and ripeness, perfectly reflective of their unique Tuscan terroir. The wines produced combine a richness and concentration of fruit, acidity, and tannin—indispensable to the wine...

97 points Vinous: "The 2017 Percarlo is an exotic beauty. Rich and sumptuous in the glass, with tremendous fruit density, the 2017 packs a serious punch. Succulent dark cherry, plum, licorice, menthol and earthy notes emerge over time, but the tannins remain imposing. Like the Baròncole, the Percarlo needs cellaring to be at its best. The 2017 was much more forthcoming from barrel. It will reveal all of that sumptuousness once again, but not soon. 93 points Vinous: "The 2019 Rosso di Montalcino Ginestreto takes things to a more classic place with dried strawberries, dusty florals, cloves and nuances of worn leather. It washes across the palate with a textural wave of ripe red and black fruits, supported by brisk acidity, as a salty core of minerals and fine tannins slowly saturates. The 2019 finishes structured and long, reminding me more of Brunello than Rosso, while leaving hints of licorice and minty herbs to linger on. The Ginestreto impresses once again with its amazing combination of fruit, ...

97 points Vinous: "The 2019 Percarlo is a wine of reserve. There's terrific purity to the fruit and fine tannins for the year, but also a bit of firmness that needs time to resolve. Bright red-toned fruit, cedar, tobacco, licorice, blood orange and spice open nicely to play off those vibrant tannins. (AG)" (07/2022) 96 points Wine Spectator: "A vibrant, finely knit red, featuring black cherry, blackberry and plum fruit accented by iron, wild herbs and spices. 94 points James Suckling: "Flowers, such as rose petals, tile and stone with some cedar and ash, all complementing the cherry character. It’s full-bodied and chewy with a tight, solid palate and finish. A little chewy now, but it will soften nicely with bottle age. " (11/2020) 93 points Wine Advocate: "The Franco Pacenti 2016 Brunello di Montalcino opens to tart cherry and cassis with more layers of spice, licorice and balsam herb at the back. The wine unfolds to show a classic interpretation of the vintage with a mid-weight mouthfeel and bright acidit...

95 points James Halliday: "Coriole and Mudgee-inhabited Montrose both had plantings of sangiovese in 1985, those of Coriole the most significant, Montrose made by Carlo Corino, trained in Italy, a wine citizen of the world. This is a three-dimensional wine, the bouquet and palate both attesting to its varietal roots, and taking the opportunity offered by the great vintage, the herbal nuances on the finish adding charisma to the equation." (11/2022) 93 points Bob Campbell: "Deep red-purple colour; youthful but layered bouquet of wood oil, smoky berries,...

Decanter: "Earthy and rustic, with energy and drive on the palate. Some cedar and spice characters, and generous alcohol. (Panel Tasting)" (06/2019) Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Rosso di Montalcino is a handy and versatile wine, especially if you are planning any outdoor barbecuing events. This wine offers good intensity, but it stays focused at the same time. It seems intent on delivering the basics of Sangiovese without going overboard in any exaggerated way. Some occasions do call for a wine that can pair seamlessly with food without becoming too much o...

92 points Vinous: "The 2019 Chianti Classico Riserva Bugialla is a dark, powerful wine. Black cherry, incense, leather and spice give this virile Riserva plenty of complexity. All that is missing is perhaps a bit of freshness. Even so, the 2019 is impressive, especially in terms of its depth and overall substance. AG" (06/2022)

Full-bodied yet remains agile with firm, gently chewy tannins and bright acidity. Try in 2025." (12/2022) 93 points Wine Spectator: "Though vibrant and packed with intense raspberry, cherry, hibiscus and earth flavors, this red is also solidly built, with dense tannins leaving a strong grip on the long, crisp finish. This has plenty to like; just be patient. Best from 2026 through 2045. (BS)" (06/2023) 92 points Vinous: "The 2...

Medium-bodied, with some meaty iron minerality on the palate, it has fine tannins and a broad richness. The palate is dry and savory, with tangerine, turned soil, and fresh salinity. 96 points Wine Advocate: "The 2021 Sangiovese has a medium ruby color and classic aromas of red and black cherries, soy sauce, iron, burnt orange peel, tobacco and loads of amaro-like accents. The medium-bodied palate has a concentrated core of cherry fruit and loads of spicy accents supported by abundant, dusty tannins and fireworks of fresh acidity, and it finishes long and detailed. Lovely! Pair it with hearty tomato-based dishes or tuck it away for another 3-5 years." K&L Notes: Giornata are my favorite producer of Italian varietals in California. I...

96 points Wine Advocate: "From an iconic vintage that gave generously to all grape varieties across almost all of Tuscany, this wine ranks high on the Fontodi billboard of greatest hits. The 2010 Flaccianello della Pieve is a rock solid wine that sits firm and begins to peel slowly, each delicate layer at a time. It puts on quite a show with a solid core of dark fruit followed by smoke, spice, tar, licorice and delicate blue flower. On previous tastings of this vintage, I had scored it 97 and 97+ points, respectively. I'm going down one point at this sit...

94 points Decanter: "Owner Gianni Pignattai farms 3.7 hectares of Brunello vineyards distributed among three separate plots, which he blends together. Following an admirable effort in the challenging 2017 vintage, Pietroso follows up with a beautiful 2018. It exudes pure red cherry and rose underscored by new leather and a suggestion of vanilla. Midweight and understated, this well-parsed Brunello offers just enough to sink your teeth into. The tannins are silky yet assertive, jaunty acidity elevates the red berry flavours, and the finish rings out with ...
