If you've ever been to the Highlander Inn, you'll know all too well that it's dangerously close to two of Scotland's best distilleries. One has become so ubiquitous that its name does not even connote Scotch any longer, but simply luxury. The other is the rugged and rustic dark horse (formerly owned by White Horse!) Craigellachie. They're putting out some of the very best malt anywhere in Scotland to little fanfare. The still house has been reconstructed in the modern era and looks similar to Glendronach's, a stone and glass box, which isn't so pretty fr...

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Silky and downright succulent, this Scotch is made with two types of oak casks—as the DoubleWood name suggests—but it’s really all about the influence of the ex-Sherry cask. Aromas suggest golden raisins and dried apricots. The silky palate starts out moderately smoky, but glides into a richer, honeyed, nutty profile that finishes with cocoa and clove accents. (KN)" (12/2015) Whisky Advocate: "This ever-popular expression of Balvenie is matured for roughly 12 years in ex-bourbon casks and finished for 9 months in Spanish oak...

While "The Original Ten" moniker is a bit confusing given it's recently revamped nature - the whisky is classic. It's got grip, ginger and vanilla spice, and lots of fruit ranging from dark currant on through to Bartlett Pear and Golden Apple. If you like a full flavoried and unapologetic Scotch, the BenRiach Original Ten is right for you.

Triple cask matured and bottled at 46% The BenRiach Twelve is sure to please whisky fans all over the world. Rachel Barrie (of Glendronach fame) will absolutely put The BenRiach on the tip of everyone's tongue. It's elegant, bold, and will hit just about anyone's "spot" for Scotch.

For many US based Scotch drinkers, Tormore is a distillery they could go their whole lives without ever seeing a bottle or even hearing of the distillery. The Speyside distillery was just built in 1958 and quietly pumps out a lot of malt for Chivas, but is rarely marketed on its own. The aptly named Discovery series from G&M highlights this wonderful single malt and gives intrepid drinkers the chance to taste a backbone component of one of the world's most famous blends.

Notes from the distillery: "Pour yourself a dram of our 12-year-old expression and you’ll appreciate why we mature our spirit entirely in the finest sherry oak casks. The luxury box reveals the stylish bottle, allowing the natural amber spirit to shine from within. You’ll taste the intense richness on the palate and enjoy the deep, long finish it delivers. So sit back and savour."

Whisky Advocate: "Benriach is a sleeper of a single malt, but that’s about to change. Part of a 2020 relaunch of its core line, this grabbed our attention with its sophistication, breadth of flavors, and lovely refinement. Much of the credit surely goes to master blender Rachel Barrie for creating a smoky whisky that both peat lovers and the peat-wary can enjoy. Rather than medicinal intensity, the peat is redolent of gentle, sweetly smoky fruits that integrate seamlessly with notes of vanilla, toasted almond, chocolate, blueberry, and bacon. It beckons ...
