90 points James Suckling: "Sliced apples, apricots, pears and lemons on the nose. Hint of aniseed, too. It’s medium-bodied, crisp and fruity with a ripe, subtly spicy finish. " (10/2021) K&L Notes: Dario Ermacora was one of our first Italian Direct Imports. His wines have always been textbook, classic, and archetypal for Friulian whites: understated, balanced, with a long finish. His winery is in the Colli Orientali del Friuli, or the Eastern Hills of Friuli, a few scant kilometers from the Slovenian border. Most of Friuli is a flat, glaciated plain ru...

2020 Ronco Blanchis Pinot Grigio Collio
Top Pick!
Sitting in the northeastern corner of Italy on the border of Slovenia, Collio has an ancient winegrowing history and remains an important DOC zone for quality white wines. Here the Palla family, led by patriarch Giancarlo, produces distinctive wines from these Friulian lands. Densely planted vines produce a terroir-driven Pinot Grigio, which features a flinty profile with notes of pear and fine minerals.

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "**#4 in WE Top 100 Wines of 2021** The tawny gold color belies the youth of this wine, and sure enough it's moved ahead on the aging curve to where it is already in a prime drinking window. Full-bodied, chewy and tannic, it's a potent wine with an assortment of herb, citrus and tree fruit elements all in a pleasing tangle. *Ranked #4 Wine Enthusiast Top 100 of 2021* (PG) " (11/2021) 92 points James Suckling: "Apricots, pears, gingerbread and some earth on the nose. It’s full-bodied with bright acidity and a creamy texture. C...

Winery notes: "Pinot Grigio from Pinot Grigio grapes, fermented as a white wine. It has an intense straw-yellow colour; its aroma is intense, full and fruity, with excellent persistence. Its taste is dry, velvety, and particularly well-orchestrated for its full body."

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "This is a sappy, substantial, deeply fruited wine that packs in pink grapefruit, lemon curd, tangerine and papaya flavors, buoyed by tangy acidity. While delicious already, there’s little doubt it can age gracefully over the next half decade. *Editors’ Choice* (PG)" (11/2021) Connoisseurs Guide: "If hardly a big and extracted wine, the 2020 Elk Cove Pinot Gris musters a little more concentration than many and delivers a good deal of forthright fruit suggestive of white peaches, pears and sweet limes without inclining to obvi...

95 points Decanter: "A powerful aroma of white flowers, peach, and hints of honey. Rounded and opulent with honeyed conference pear, and a nicely textured, grippy finish. (DWWA)" (07/2021) 90 points Wine Enthusiast: "A fruit-powered wine, this is loaded with apple, melon and pear, and dusted with a dash of white pepper. A suggestion of fresh tarragon adds depth, though taken as a whole it's a wide-open, generous wine that should be enjoyed over the next couple of years. (PG)" (12/2019)

93 points James Suckling: "Lots of spices and dried mango and apple on the nose and palate with hints of cream and vanilla. It’s full-bodied with lovely flavors and a long, delicious finish. White Burgundy sensibility to this, from the barrel usage in the winemaking process. Drink or hold." (08/2020)

Predominantly from Whistling Ridge Vineyard, vines planted in 1990. This Pinot Gris is picked quite early to preserve acidity, fermented and aged on the lees in neutral Acacia wood Puncheons and Foudre. It is a fresh, vibrant, mineral driven style showcasing the minerality given up by these ancient marine sedimentary soils.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The straw-yellow 2018 Pinot Gris Trocken opens with a clear and fine yet intense and well-concentrated, elegant nose with ripe and healthy white fruit and some greenish gooseberry and leafy aromas. Elegant and fresh on the palate, this is a charming and refreshingly fruity Pinot Gris with elegant acidity and good freshness. It's not very long or complex, though, just a nice and pleasant wine. Tasted in March 2020. (SR)" (04/2020)

98 points James Suckling: "So spicy and smoky with a hint of mushroom, this is an enormously deep and concentrated dry Pinot Gris that’s just beginning to open up. With some aeration, ripe melon character is added to the expansive picture. Tons of spice at the imposing, dry finish and just a hint of raisin. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but better from 2023." (06/2021) 91 points Decanter: "The 2019 Clos Saint Urbain Rangen de Thann Pinot Gris is slightly reduced right now. But with air, the bouquet shows white fruits aromas, with spi...

Kabaj (Ka-bye) have farmed their vineyards for many generations. When Katja Kabaj met French oenologist Jean-Michel Morel after his stint at an Italian winery, they fell in love and eventually married. Jean-Michel brought some of those Italian and French sensibilities to the winery along with his fondness for working with amphorae. Those who have tasted Kabaj whites know that these wines range from light to full skin contact for the whites. And that the "Beli" Pinot Blanc is truly intriguing. It's aged for 10 days on the skins and then for about a year i...

91 points James Suckling: "Lots of sliced-pear, rose-hip and exotic-fruit aromas give this ripe and generous dry pinot gris a lot of appeal. But it’s the striking cleanness and liveliness at the finish for the super ripe vintage that makes it stand out. Drink now." (11/2020) 90 points Wine Enthusiast: "In this wine, notes of ripe yellow pear on the nose promise juiciness and freshness. Delivering on both counts, the palate presents an easy and appetizing core of green and yellow pear. The rounded body preserves freshness that brightens the dry finish. ...

Connoisseurs Guide: "Wholly free of any evident sweetness and among the drier, more subdued Pinot Gris with respect to overt fruitiness, J’s California bottling is a firmly balanced working with a certain minerally inflection to its persistent themes of fresh pears and lemons. It is a pleasingly crisp, mid-sized, very food-friendly effort that is as clean as they come and will be a most welcome mealtime guest with lighter seafoods galore in the immediate term. *Good Value*" (09/2021) K&L Notes: J Vineyards, perhaps best-known for their bubbly, has a sp...

This wine hovers somewhere between a rosé and an orange wine. The Pinot Gris is given some extended skin contact and the coppery, orange-pink hue is obtained. The wine is then fermented in a mix of amphorae and neutral oak. It's a little more textured and complex than your average rosé, yet a little less oxidative and funky than your average orange wine...for me it's right in the sweet spot, a thoroughly delicious and enthralling wine.
