91 points Wine Spectator: "Ruby-colored, with grape, dark chocolate and plum. Full and chewy. Tannins are still there and need to mellow. Medium-sweet and grapey. A little one-dimensional still, but impressive. (JS, Web-2008)" (02/2008) 90 points Wine Advocate: "This house makes rather restrained yet rich, flavorful vintage port and a very good tawny called Nimrod. Their vintage ports seem slow to develop … they have a unique mineral-scented character that gives them their own complexity and style. The 1985 is the sweetest and richest of the recent War...

97 points Decanter: "Probably the best wine from a good, ripe though rather variable vintage: still deep at the centre with a thin tawny rim; lovely ripe plummy aromas, open but still brooding with more to reveal; ripe and fleshy on the palate with glorious plum and cherry fruit backed by firm ripe tannins leading to a powerful finish. Ready to drink now and will keep and develop in bottle for another thirty years at least! (RM)" (09/2021) 96 points Wine Advocate: "Graham is the undisputed star and kingpin of the 1985 vintage ports. Yes, it is made in ...

94 points Int'l Wine Cellar: "Pale orange-red color, greeny-gold at the rim. Knockout ethereal nose combines strawberry, minerals, maple syrup, black toffee, truffle and autumn leaves. Juicy, pungent, precise and minerally; a Chambolle style of Rioja, weightless in the best possible way. Dry, brisk and fresh, with penetrating cherry fruit. This will get your salivary glands working. Finishes bright, subtle and long, with easygoing, perfectly integrated tannins and a whiplash of flavor. (ST)" (07/2003) 91 points John Gilman: "The 1985 Viña Tondonia is d...

90 points Wine Spectator: "Rich and supple with ripe cherry, currant and tobacco nuances along with a soft, earthy quality on the palate. Very elegant with depth and flavor. Beautifully balanced." (09/1988) Wine Advocate: "The 1985 Siran is surprisingly powerful for the vintage, rich in fruit, elegant, long, and aromatic. It will age well..." (01/1998) K&L Notes: Reconditioned at the property in last ten years-direct from property. Great party size.

93 points James Suckling: "Aromas of walnuts, dried fruit and raisins. Surprisingly rich and powerful. Yet medium-bodied now. Concludes with a nutty finish. Beautiful." (01/2017) 93 points Vinous: "The 1985 Dow’s Vintage Port has a gorgeous, very pure bouquet with mulberry, leather, terracotta tiles on a warm day, and hints of clove all beautifully defined. The palate is very well balanced with supple tannin, lightly spiced on the entry, touches of liquorice and black pepper, curry powder and ginger with a very harmonious and long finish. This may well...

Along with Taylor and Fonseca, Graham has probably been the most con...

95 points John Gilman: "The 1985 Cheval Blanc is a beautiful bottle of young wine that still needs several years of cellaring to fully reach its apogee and start to show all of its multi-layered complexity. The bouquet is deep and clearly destined for profundity, but still a tad primary in its mélange of dark berries, menthol, tobacco leaf, gravelly soil tones, smoke and a touch of new wood. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and still quite tight, with a great core of pure fruit, impeccable focus and balance, ripe tannins and great length and g...

90 points Wine Spectator: "Rich and supple with ripe cherry, currant and tobacco nuances along with a soft, earthy quality on the palate. Very elegant with depth and flavor. Beautifully balanced." 90 points Wine Advocate: "Picked between 25 September and 9 October, it is mature in color with some bricking on the rim. The palate is a little rustic with red berries intermingling with bacon fat, singed leather, bay leaf and a slither of dried orange peel. The palate is very well balanced, fleshy in keeping with the style of the vintage, not as complex or as structured as the 1986, but certainly superior to the 1982 Montrose, with an effortless, nonchalant finish that beckons you back for another sip. Just a delicious Saint Estèphe that is à point. (N...

91 points Wine Spectator: "Yet another winner from Pavie. Caresses the palate and defines elegance. Lovely mint, berry and chocolate character. Full-bodied yet very refined." (10/1994)
Price: $599.99

Wine Advocate: "One rarely sees this brand stateside. The 1985 is one of the surprises of the vintage. It has an intense nose of chocolate, berry fruit, and tar. On the palate, the wine is concentrated, powerful, and full-bodied with layers of fruit. It finishes sweeter than some of the other ports with a great deal of tannin. (RP)" (01/1989)
Price: $89.99

90 points Wine Advocate: "Is the 1985 the sleeper of the vintage? An astonishing amount of creamy, black-cherry and chocolate-scented fruit fills the nose. On the palate, this full-bodied wine is loaded with extract, great length, and has super finish with plenty of fruit and tannin in proper balance. (RP)" (01/1989)

Wine Advocate: "Sandeman is one of the biggest and most conspicuous of the port houses, with extensive interests in the sherry business as well. They advertise significantly and their products are well-represented in virtually every American marketplace. The quality is quite good given the quantity of wine produced... The 1985 has less of a deep-ruby/purple color, but it does offer a spice-box, fruitcake sort of aroma, mildly sweet, medium- to full-bodied flavors, and a ripe, tasty finish. Not a heavyweight, this wine represents a lighter style of vintag...

Bid on this bottle of 1985 Maison Leroy Beaune-Sizies. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Much has been written about the dynamic Madame Lalou Bize-Leroy. Some of it has been malicious and motivated strictly by insidious jealousy. From time to time I have complained of her pricing structure. Yet there should never be any criticism of her philosophy of what burgundy should be. Her wines are among the noblest and purest expressions of Pinot Noir in Burgundy. They are treated with the care of a pampered child, never filtered, and bottled barrel by barrel. Given the size of her wines and their power and structure, in a cool damp cellar they will last 20 to 25 years. (RP)" (12/1989)

Bid on this bottle of 1985 Heitz Cellar "Martha's Vineyard" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (96JG, 94RP). John Gilman: "I can distinctly recall from my early days in the wine trade the release of the 1985 Martha’s Vineyard, which was eagerly anticipated after it was announced that this was the first vintage to be graced with a special label since the legendary 1974. This was at the height of the winery’s popularity and the 1985 Martha’s was an extremely difficult bottle to come by at the time of its release. Consequently, I had not seen a bottle in many years and was delighted to see it included in our vertical at the winery in June. (JG) 96+" (04/2021)

Bid on this magnum of 1985 Louis Martini "Duke's 20" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (1.5L). The story of Louis Martini is a key chapter in Napa's winemaking history. Genovese immigrant Louis Martini established his first business in 1922, smack in the middle of Prohibition (in force in the US from 1919 until 1933). He was therefore limited to making "sacramental and medicinal" wines at first. With the end of prohibition, Martini became one the first winemakers in California to produce vintage varietal table wines in quantity, and at reasonable prices. His son's 1968/70 Merlot was the first varietal Merlot made in the US. Sourced from prime vineyards in Napa and Sonoma, including Monte Rosso in the mountains above Sonoma Valley and La Loma in the cool Carneros district south of Napa, and made with care and expertise, Louis Martini wines have aged exceptionally well. With their hallmark of impeccable balance, older Louis Martini Cabs never cease to amaze.
