99 points James Suckling: "What an awe-inspiring nose of currants, shaved lead pencil, white truffles and earth. It's full-bodied and enveloped by silky tannins that lead to an earthy, long finish. Old, traditional Bordeaux with soul and remarkable complexity. Sensational." (10/2015) 90 points Wine Advocate: "The rich, complex, well-developed bouquet of oriental spices, toasty oak, herbs, and ripe fruit is wonderful. On the palate, the wine is also rich, forward, long, and sexy. It ranks behind both Haut-Brion and Chateau Margaux in 1985. I am surprise...

Wine Spectator: "Very firm and elegant, offering excellent balance between the solid core of cherry and raspberry flavors and the spicy overlay of coffee and anise. A tightly wound, compact wine that's already beginning to soften around the edges." K&L Notes: The Col d'Orcia Brunello di Montalcino 1985 is a classic example of traditional Brunello from one of Montalcino’s historic estates. The 1985 vintage is renowned for its excellent conditions, which produced rich, structured wines with great longevity. After decades of aging, this Brunello would exhi...

93 points Wine Advocate: "The 1985 Fonseca is still youthful in appearance with hardly any ageing on the rim. The nose offers kirsch, sloes and Christmas cake. With time, there are subtle notes of dried fig and dates beginning to emerge and add to the complexity. The palate is medium-bodied and beautifully balanced on the supple, rounded entry. It is not quite as complex as the aromatics, with dates and dried fig, the finish mellow and refined. It is very elegant for a Fonseca, weighty but supremely well focused. This is a fabulous Fonseca that is ready ...

92 points Wine Advocate: "Tasted at the chateau, you are immediately struck by the smokiness of the nose: cooked meats, a touch of burnt buttered toast just explodes from the glass. The palate is full-bodied with an over-riding meatiness to it, lovely balance, fleshy as one expects from an ’85, but married to Grand-Puy-Lacoste’s inherent austerity this makes for a 'complete' wine experience. Savoury black fruits on the well-poised finish that just lacks the length of the ’90. But still a lovely wine. Tasted April 2008. (NM-Wine Journal)" (07/2008) 90 p...

96 points John Gilman: "This was my last bottle of ’85 Lafite out of the cellar, as I only bought three bottles when it was released and dearly wish I had bought more, as the wine is rather more expensive today than it was back in 1987! This is an utterly brilliant year for Lafite and one of my favorite wines of the vintage, as it offers up a deep and very complex nose of cassis, sweet dark berries, a touch of fresh coconut, beautifully complex, gravelly soil tones, cigar smoke, fresh herbs and cedar. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very ...

94 points Wine Spectator: " *Ranked #31, Top 100 Wines of 1988* Gorgeous fruit, rich, supple, satiny with beautiful structure, amazing intensity and depth, rich cassis, butter, toasty oak and spicy flavors, plenty of tannin, but impeccibly balanced. Distinct and exciting. " (11/1988) 92 points Wine Advocate: "This wine has been consistently impressive and my rating has never deviated by more than two points. In the March, 1995 tasting, the wine was still very youthful, with almost a barrel sample-like, saturated purple color, and a big, rich, jammy, ca...

99 points James Suckling: "What an awe-inspiring nose of currants, shaved lead pencil, white truffles and earth. It's full-bodied and enveloped by silky tannins that lead to an earthy, long finish. Old, traditional Bordeaux with soul and remarkable complexity. Sensational." (11/2015) 93 points Decanter: "The customary glamour of Mouton is on display here, with softened but welcoming blackberry, bilberry and raspberry fruits, still offering texture and juice through the palate. This is matched by clove, cinnamon, caramel and smoke. Another era at Mouton...

93 points Wine Advocate: "Much younger than the three previous vintages of Spottswoode with much more acidity showing through (a characteristic of this vintage). Dark ruby with more purple in the color, a nice layered attack with licorice, cedar wood, tobacco leaf and black and red currants, the wine has terrific aromatics and is by far the most perfumed of the first four vintages. There is a slight abruptness in the finish, no doubt caused by the noticeable acid. This was an identical blend to the 1984, with 4% Cabernet Franc with a balance of Cabernet ...

92 points Wine Spectator: "*** Cellar Selection *** Powerful and complex, with lots of ripe cherry, currant and spice aromas and flavors, hinting at chocolate and toast on the long, long finish. A big wine with plenty of grace and elegance. " (05/1990) K&L Notes:

94 points Decanter: "Whiffs of dried black cherries, liquorice and mint introduce this rich, concentrated wine that's still reflective of this excellent Napa vintage. Vibrant in fruit yet shaded with hints of spice and earth, it offers up generous streaks of caramelised black plum and blueberry flavours framed by a peppery edge of acidity and soft, yielding tannins. Likely to hold another decade. (AI)" (05/2023) 92 points Wine Spectator: "Powerful and complex, with lots of ripe cherry, currant and spice aromas and flavors, hinting at chocolate and toas...

96 points Vinous: "The 1985 L'Évangile has vied with the 1989 as the finest of the decade. It was unapologetically backward for the first two decades of its life, but now it's just everything you want from a mature Pomerol. With melted red fruit, garrigues, rosemary, thyme and hints of black truffle, the aromatics reel you in. Likewise, the palate now has exquisite balance, sensual in style and effortless with a savory, slightly meaty finish that is in a perfect place now. Just a gorgeous Pomerol. 95 points Wine Advocate: "Approaching full maturity, this beautifully sweet Chateau Margaux has a dense plum/purple color and a huge, sweet nose of black currants intermixed with licorice, toast, underbrush, and flowers. Medium to full-bodied with supple tannin and a fleshy, juicy, very succulent and multi-layered mid-palate, this expansive, velvety wine has entered its plateau of maturity, where it should remain (assuming good storage) for at least another 10-15 years. (RP)" (01/2003) 93 points Wine Spectator: "Shows mint and savory notes out front, w...

91 points Wine Advocate: "Groth turned in a superb performance with its 1985 regular cuvee of Cabernet Sauvignon. It offers beautiful, sweet, ripe, flashy, black-cherry and cassis fruit, toasty oak, and a subtle, herbaceous note. (RP)" (04/1995) 90 points Wine Spectator: "Lovely perfumed, floral and cherry-berry aromas belie its age. Supple and graceful, this is a delicate wine that has shed most of its tannins yet retained a tasty core of fruit. (JL)" (11/2005)

96 points Decanter: "There is a deep and almost porty character to the plum and fig fruit, now shot through with aromas of wood smoke, sous-bois and truffle. The wine is harmonious and lovely, although it is beginning to show its age. The finish lingers admirably on the palate. An interesting showing. (CC)" (03/2022) 94 points Vinous: "The 1985 Clos de Tart Grand Cru might appear mature, but it represents the high point of the decade and has in fact evolved well in bottle. The elegant, well-defined bouquet is beguilingly pure, offering cranberry, red c...

94 points John Gilman: "The 1985 Marcarini Brunate is still a few years away from peak drinkability, but with an hour in decanter, it is still a great joy to drink today. The nose is deep, complex and stunning, offering up notes of candied black cherries, intense licorice, woodsmoke, a bit of tariness, incipient notes of the roasted gamebirds to come, roses and with air, loads of toasted almond. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and refined, with a sweet core of fruit, still a bit of ripe tannin, and plenty of acidity keeping the wine young and...

95 points Wine Advocate: "The 1985 Solaia continues to evolve at a quicker pace than the 1985 Sassicaia. A huge nose of olives, toast, cedar, and cassis offers considerable enjoyment. In the mouth, this dark ruby/purple-colored, opulent wine exhibits a rich, medium to full-bodied, chewy texture, decent acidity, and well-integrated flavors of smoky new oak. The finish is supple and long as the tannins have quickly melted away. (RP) " (12/1992) 95 points Vinous: "Things get much more interesting as the 1985 Solaia is poured. What a wine. Bold, luscious a...

91 points John Gilman: "I adored Poujeaux back in the decade of the 1980s, when it was one of the greatest steals to be found on the Left Bank, and the 1985 showed beautifully at our big tasting of the vintage here in New York in October. The bouquet is deep, complex and utterly classic for this fine Moulis property, wafting from the glass in a mix of cassis, cigar ash, incipient notes of chipotle peppers, a touch of coffee and a topnote of graphite. On the palate the wine is deep, fullish, complex and beautifully tangy, with a fine core of fruit, meltin...

91 points Wine Spectator: "Greatness in subtlety. Clearly focused black cherry and vanilla character. It's full-bodied with medium tannins and a juicy, fruity finish. (JS)" (10/1994) 90 points Wine Advocate: "Tasted at the Château Palmer vertical in London, the 1985 Château Palmer was clearly a favourite amongst the participants in the tasting, although here I actually concur with Robert Parker - it's a pleasant Margaux, but not the most complex wine of the vintage. You get the feeling that it doesn't fire on all cylinders. It has an appealing bacon fa...

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1985 Fonseca Vintage Port (93RP, 93WS, 91DC). Wine Advocate: "The 1985 Fonseca is still youthful in appearance with hardly any ageing on the rim. This is a fabulous Fonseca that is ready to drink now, but will age for another 30 or 40 years. (NM)" (02/2013)

Amazing concentration, brimming with focused cherry, plum, smoke and cinnamon flavors, all tied together into a harmonious package that keeps echoing and changing with every sip. Beautifully smooth but firm on the palate, it has the uncanny feeling of power with no weight, only mass. *Top 100 Wines of 1988* (HS)" (02/1988)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1985 Graham's Vintage Port (97DC, 96RP, 96WS, 94JS). Decanter: "Probably the best wine from a good, ripe though rather variable vintage: still deep at the centre with a thin tawny rim; lovely ripe plummy aromas, open but still brooding with more to reveal; ripe and fleshy on the palate with glorious plum and cherry fruit backed by firm ripe tannins leading to a powerful finish. Ready to drink now and will keep and develop in bottle for another thirty years at least! (RM)" (09/2021)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1985 Far Niente Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. This is an early vintage from the revival of a Napa Valley classic. Did you know that Far Niente was founded in 1885 by the uncle of famous American impressionist painter, Winslow Homer? Bid on this bottle of 1985 Pavillon Rouge, Margaux (93WS). Wine Spectator: "Rich and massive but elegant too. It's loaded with berry, cassis and mint flavors and a wallop of tannin and oak. But it's pretty and refined, and this is just Margaux's second label. Give this one some cellar time. *Spectator Selection*" (04/1988)
Starting Bid: $140.00
Bid on this bottle of 1985 Margaux, Margaux (96RP, 96VN, 95DC, 93WS). Vinous: "Sensual and pure on the nose, this offers gorgeous, pixelated red fruit blossoming in the glass with inkwell and violet hints. The palate is lace-like, refined and embroidered with a very fine thread of acidity. Almost straight-laced in the beginning, there is a peacock's tail on the finish that leaves you with a stupid grin on your face. (NM)" (09/2023)
Starting Bid: $440.00
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1985 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac (97DC, 95VN, 95WS, 94RP). Decanter: "It is tough to put into words how much I love this wine, alongside its slightly more concentrated cousin, Leoville Las Cases from the same vintage. They are both classic examples of what the very best of Bordeaux should be. The Lynch Bages is loaded with everything you want from mature Pauillac: cedar, cigar box, menthol, a touch of red fruit and the kind of feeling that you are finally home. There is no outlying tannin but is slightly lighter in style than both the 1982 and 1986. In the two dozen or so times that I have drunk this wine it has never been anything short of spectacular. Textbook. There is no benefit from waiting, but there is also no rush. (GB)" (02/2023)
