"With a lengthy history comes a list of accomplishments and triumphs. Such is the case for Chateau Suduiraut, which dates to the seventeenth century. Not only did Suduiraut achieve First Growth status in the classification of 1855, they also were one of the pioneers in grafting vines onto American rootstock to thwart the scourge of Phylloxera. For this, credit goes to Emile Petit de Forest, who owned and oversaw the Suduiraut at the end of the nineteenth century. Today, at its best, Suduiraut produces a deeply colored, honeyed wine of great richness and...

92 points John Gilman: "This bottle was served double blind and one of my friends guessed it very promptly. I was most impressed. He commented that we had once drunk the wine together and I noted that I did not recall ever having done so. It certainly predated my starting the newsletter, as I have no notes in my database, which stretch back to the early 2000s. In any case, kudos to Sasha for guessing the wine in a nano-second! The 1961 Château Lascombes is fully mature and drinking beautifully today, offering up a refined and complex bouquet of dark berr...

From the Wine Spectator: "A ripe, almost sweet fruitiness is the hallmark of this broadly flavored, smoky-tasting, richly textured wine. Reminds you of an aged Burgundy." (April 1996)

1961 Ducru-Beaucaillou, St-Julien (low shoulder) (Previously $2000) (Previously $2000)
Top Pick!
96 points Wine Advocate: "Tasted 6 Times With Consistent Notes. Fully mature, yet continuing to exhibit gobs of rich, lush, expansive fruit, the 1961 has amber/orange edges, and possesses an exotic bouquet of ripe fruit, vanillin, caramel, mint, and cedar. Fat, rich, and loaded with sweet, highly extracted fruit, this velvety, beautifully crafted wine has a 60-75 second finish. It is a brilliant wine that should hold up nicely for up to a decade. " (10/1994) 92 points Wine Spectator: "A classy Bordeaux from a great year. It smells perfumed and exotic, ...

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1961 Villadoria Barolo . Having begun as a nursery selling rootstock and cuttings to estates in the Langhe in the late 1800s, Villadoria established itself as a bona fide producer of fine Barolo and Barbaresco in 1959 in the heart of Serralunga d'Alba. This example of the excellent 1961 vintage from the winery's early days is still drinking beautifully, as the growing season endowed the wines with much power and structure to withstand the long haul in the cellar.

Bid on this bottle of 1961 Léoville-Las-Cases, St-Julien (92RP). Wine Advocate: "This has a well defined bouquet, fresher than other bottles of this wine that I have encountered although not as ambitious as Ducru-Beaucaillou or Gruaud-Larose. Dark berries, a touch of soy, mint and cranberry leaf. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, taut tannins; very strict and linear, a slight tinny edge towards the finish but well defined. This is probably the best bottle of ’61 that I have met. (NM)" (07/2011)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1961 Figeac, St-Émilion (90DC, 90WS). Wine Spectator: "An outstanding St.-Emilion that exudes rich flavors of plum, mineral and herb. Fades a bit quickly in the glass, but is lots of fun while it lasts. " (04/1996)
Starting Bid: $550.00

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1961 Giacomo Borgogno & Figli Barolo Riserva (95JS, 92VN, 91RP). James Suckling: "An ethereal red with amazingly complex and subtle aromas of dried rose petals, red cherries and star anise. Cedar too. It's delicate yet dense and changes every minute in the glasses." (06/2013)
Starting Bid: $300.00

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1961 Franco Fiorina Barolo (92JG). John Gilman: "I am not sure if it is the bottle or the wine, but the 1961 Franco Fiorina Barolo is just a touch more oxidative in style than the bottle of ’61 Barbaresco paired up with it, though this too is drinking very well indeed, just without quite the same vibrancy and sense of being at its apogee. The tertiary bouquet is a mix of dried cherries, orange peel, red curry, onion skin, dried roses and a complex base of soil tones. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very suave and resolved on the attack, with a fine core, lovely intensity of flavor, very good grip and lovely balance on the long and mature finish. This is still very tasty, but my gut instinct tells me that there are even more vibrant bottles out there." (08/2014)
Starting Bid: $180.00

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1961 Marchesi di Barolo Barolo. Marchesi di Barolo (which used to be known as Opera Pia Barolo) is one of the region's most historic wineries. Marchesi Falletti was a former proprietor of the estate in the early 1800s and is widely considered to be the creator of what is now known as Barolo. The wines made here were and continue to be Nebbiolos of great breed and complexity.

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1961 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac (97DC, 95RP). Decanter: "It's incredible how good this still is, the product of a year with tiny yields after a spring frost and a dry August and September. It equals many of the best 1945s that I’ve tasted, giving Latour a run for its money at a fraction of the price. This is richly coloured and it holds on in the glass, revealing layers of flavour. It is spicier and more intense than anything else here; tight, powerful and very much still in control. There's a flush of heat and burnished cinnamon on the finish, which gives it an almost port-like shadow. (JA)" (11/2017)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1961 Rauzan-Gassies, Margaux. Wine Advocate: ""
Starting Bid: $585.00

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1961 Pichon-Baron, Pauillac. (93VN) "The 1961 Pichon Baron, a wine that I have drunk three times before, finally produces a bottle that fits the billing. The bouquet is wonderful with vibrant, concentrated black fruit laced with cedar and mint, aromatics with a spring in its step. That telltale briny note emerges with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, quite structured and concentrated, not as complex as its peers but there is good grip and spiciness on the finish. This has the substance to last, though it will not meliorate after six decades. Tasted at the Pichon Baron Ancienne Millésime tasting." (08/2022)"
