92 points James Suckling: "An attractive, fresh red with rich black-fruit character and stony minerality. Some cedar wood as well. Medium-bodied with outstanding depth and fine tannins. Spicy undertone. Will get even better in a year or two." (02/2020) 90 points Tim Atkin: "Vicky Pons makes this unwooded Malbec from younger vines planted in 2001, aiming to reflect “the personality of Agrelo”. Supple, smooth and textured, it’s the kind of inexpensive red that will delight the grape’s many fans, with fresh acidity plum and summer pudding flavours." Vino...

95 points Decanter: " DWWA 2022 "Opulent and inviting aromatics, with pretty rose petal, heady sandalwood and plush blueberry on the nose, while the palate is laced with lush plum, a zippy acidity and velvety smooth tannins."" (07/2022) 91 points Descorchados : "From vineyards more than 1,800 meters high in Cafayate, in the Calchaquíes Valley, deep in the Andes. This desert wine is rich in ripe and succulent red fruits, and on the palate, it has firm and tense acidity that marks the contours of the mouth, brightens the flavors, and accentuates the tann...

94 points Descorchados : "This blend of 70% malbec is primarily from Lunlunta, 23% bonarda from eastern Mendoza, and petit verdot from the Agrelo zone on the southern bank of the Mendoza River. It was aged for a little over a year in barrels of different uses and today it’s a young and energetic wine with a load of firm tannins that are very reactive on the palate and a young and somewhat wild texture that needs time, not only for those tannins to soften up, but also so that the aromas and fruity flavors gain in complexity. Patience here." (01/2022) 93...

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Dense, dark fruits and dark-chocolate flavors give a rich, concentrated wine. The Malbec shows its tannic, powerful side, demanding aging. (RV)" (07/2022) K&L Notes: Vigneron Hervé Joyaux Fabre began his career as a Bordeaux merchant but the wines of Argentina began to gain his attention. Falling in love with the category, he purchased his winery in Mendoza and created in Fabre Montmayou in 1992. Gaining much success there it was not until 2015 when Fabre turned his sight back to the birthplace of Malbec, Cahors. Impressed...

94 points Descorchados : "At an altitude of 1,400 meters, Gualtallary is the source of some of El Enemigo’s best reds. The specific source is the Adrianna Vineyard, which was planted in the mid-1990s on sandy, gravel, and calcareous soils at the foot of Lomas del Jaboncillo, in what is now known as the Monastery zone. From there we get this kind of introduction to the world of El Enemigo in the heights of the Uco Valley, a malbec that has fruity and floral notes as well as herbal and earthy touches. The palate is tense and rich in reactive tannins. An an...

92 points Wine Advocate: "The 2020 Appellation Lunlunta Malbec is from a riper year than the 2019, but they still managed to keep the alcohol to a moderate 13.65% and retain enough freshness to make the wine fresh and balanced with some earthy rusticity and juicy fruit. It was bottled after eight months in oak barrels, and the wines show increasingly less oak. (LG)" (03/2021) 92 points Vinous: "The 2020 Malbec Catena Appellation Lunlunta hails from Luján de Cuyo on the alluvial river bank of the Río Mendoza and was aged for eight months in 35% new barr...

93 points Tim Atkin: ""Our classic Malbec,” is how Thibaut Delmotte describes this blend of four vineyards at
different altitudes - Altura Máxima, Colomé, El Arenal and La Brava. Wonderfully juicy and
scented, it’s the perfect introduction to the variety, with intense damson, blueberry and wild
thyme flavours, palate-caressing tannins and a tangy finish." 92 points Vinous: "The 2020 Malbec Estate from the Calchaquí Valley, Salta was aged for 15 months in a quarter new barrels. A purplish ebony in the glass. The concentrated, intense nose offers notes ...

93 points James Suckling: "Notes of blue plums and blueberries with hints of savory herbs, violets and wet stones. A crunchy and savory palate with juicy, finely polished tannins and chalky blue fruit character. Pretty and attractive with a mineral finish." (02/2023) 93 points Wine Advocate: "The 2020 Malbec Reserve was produced from vines on limestone soils in Gualtallary (80%) and Altamira (20%) with concentration and elegance. It has 13.8% alcohol and keeps very good freshness and balance. It fermented with natural yeasts, and 75% of the volume matu...

Hendry is a Napa Valley gem, plain and simple. The family ranch, which has won numerous "Top 100" accolades, is approaching eighty years in the Napa Valley and their wines showcase the terroir that made the Valley famous in traditional, well-balanced wines. Unlike most Napa Valley award-winners, Hendry wines remain incredibly affordable, offering value that's tough to beat in California today. Their 2019 Block 14 Malbec comes off of stony clay soils, and is only occasionally bottled solo (making this a release to hold on to!). After primary fermentation ...

92 points Wine Advocate: "The classical red 2019 Malbec Terroir Luján de Cuyo was produced with certified organic grapes from their property, selected from places with almost no clay and more limestone. Seventy-five percent of the volume was kept in the concrete tanks, where it fermented for 18 months, while the rest matured in 3,500-liter oak foudres. This has 13.5% alcohol and a pH of 3.74, and it's juicy and balanced, with a similitude with the Malbec Classico. It's from 24 hectares planted on their property, and this is selected from a small plot tha...

97 points Wine Advocate: "The 2019 Malbec Appellation Gualtallary comes from specific soils, two small three-hectare plots in the Cerros del Jaboncillo, where they find more caliche and limestone in Tupungato Winelands. They believe this place transmits the maximum expression of limestone to Malbec, giving a structured wine with fine-grained tannins with the wilderness from Gualtallary. It fermented in small concrete vats with indigenous yeasts at some 26 degrees Celsius for 20 days. Eighty-five percent of the volume matured in untoasted 3,500-liter Fren...

93 points Vinous: "The 2021 Malbec Año Cero hails from La Consulta in the Uco Valley and was a third aged for 10 months in barrels. Purple in hue. It begins with bold notes of violet and plum followed by gentle hints of herb, black tea and lavender. In the mouth, the tannins are broad but refined with juicy freshness, bold flavor and a refined texture. “Here, the ripeness comes out in the aromas,” says Karim Mussi Safie, the oenologist behind this wine, and this certainly rings true in the glass. The year adds to the complexity. (JH)" (09/2022) 92 poin...

95 points Wine Advocate: "My favorite of the Malbecs is the 2018 Eggo Tinto de Tiza, from a Mendoza year—mild and dry—and aged exclusively in concrete eggs, which to me is the Zorzal signature. This is elegant, nuanced and pure, with great aromatics, clean and precise and with a medium-bodied palate, with moderate ripeness and red rather than black fruit. This is superb. It matured for 10 months before it was bottled... (LG)" (03/2021) 93 points James Suckling: "Tar, pepper and blackberry aromas follow through to a medium body with very finely polished...

96 points James Suckling: "A really well-balanced malbec here that is slightly spicier and richer. Black cherries, dark olives and some violets. Fleshy and almost full-bodied on the palate with juicy, naturally rendered fruit and very fine-grained tannins. Balance is the word. " (02/2023) 96 points Wine Advocate: "The very young but already harmonious 2021 Catena Zapata Malbec Argentino has one of the showier labels from the Catena portfolio. 2021 was a cooler year, as cold as 2016, but instead of a wet year like 2016, it was dry. Rich, smoky and flavorful finish. Malbec, cabernet sauvignon and petit verdot." (02/2022) 93 points Wine Advocate: "The red blend 2020 Unus was produced with 65% Malbec, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot from different locations in Mendoza, fermented in small stainless steel tanks followed by malolactic in barrel and 16 months in French barrique. It has contained ripeness and 13.7% alcohol from a cooler year in a warmer place. It's a classical Malbec, balanced and elegant but also powerful with fine tannins. It finishes with violets and spice. It's a Malbec with spicy oak. The vineyards of Cahors date back to the Roman occupation, making them among some of the oldest in France. Nicknamed the "black wine" because of its beautiful opaque color, wines from Cahors were historically used to darken the color of Bordeaux claret. Historically, popes and Russian tsars have imbibed this palate-staining wine, which was also the preferred red wine of author Ernest Hemingway. Château la Coustarelle is owned by Michel and Nadine Cassot and located in the village of Prayssac, next to the renowned Clos de Gamot.

96 points James Suckling: "Loads of ink and tar on the nose with incense and spices. Inky. Full-bodied and firm with velvety tannins that spread across the palate, thanks to the Napa mountain vineyards. Unique malbec. Big wine, but agile." 95 points Vinous: "The 2019 Malbec is a real head-turner. Ample and explosive on the palate, with tremendous depth, the 2019 packs a huge amount of fruit into its full-bodied frame. Red plum, pomegranate, rose petal and spice are all kicked up in this flamboyant, exuberant Malbec. In a word: stunning. (AG)"

A vivid purple in color, the pure, expressive nose offers aromas of fresh plum and blackcurrant with hints of herb and violet and a whiff of jalapeño. In the mouth, it’s compact with finely grained, chalky tannins, verticality and tension. A wine bursting with lively expression. (JH)" (11/2021)

Pink Girl Rosé is a fun a playful label, but also a seriously good wine made from top-notch Mt. Veeder Malbec (and a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon). Tina Carpenter's bright, vivacious personality is personified in the wine that is well dressed in bright pink hue, fresh vibrant acidity and sparkling mineral flourishes from Veeder's uplifted ocean soils. Tina, who just so happens to be the wife of Chris Carpenter (Lokoya, Cardinale, La Jota etc) uses exceptional quality fruit from the Bruadair Vineyard for her rosé. The wine's eye-catching label, complete wi...

This 100% Malbec was sourced from 35-year-old vines, harvested by hand, and created, according to the winery, "using an unprecedented technique: it is aged in a limestone vat, allowing the grapes to reflect the story of their birthplace. In order to create this vat, the Croisilles hired a local artisan to carve the vat from a limestone rock. The grapes are sourced from a parcel of land with Siderolithic limestone soil whose altitude is 300 meters (approximately 984 feet). The resulting wine is bursting with freshness, mineral notes and energy.

93 points Decanter: "The Naoki Vineyard is planted on a steep east-west slope at 950m in Agrelo, producing this expressive Malbec, which is hand-harvested and aged for 12 months in new and used French oak. Elegant black fruit aromas, edged in vanilla, spice and floral notes. There's lovely depth of velvety black fruit, interwoven with spice, plus fine tannins and a savoury bite to the finish. A cracking match for steak. (JS)" (04/2022) 93 points Tim Atkin: "Naoki’s Vineyard is the stoniest and the chalkiest of Casarena’s single parcels and it shows in...

96 points Wine Advocate: "The Catena Zapata range comprises some single-vineyard wines, like the 2014 Malbec Catena Zapata Nicasia Vineyard that comes from a plot of ungrafted vines planted in Altamira in 1996 using Malbec cuttings from the ancient Angélica vineyard. Cropped from a year that delivered moderate alcohol and notable acidity, it fermented with full clusters in 2,000- and 5,000-liter oak foudres with indigenous yeasts. It matured in French oak barrels for 24 months. This shows superbly and is open and expressive, very classical and elegant, f...

98 points Wine Advocate: "The 2014 Adrianna Vineyard River Stones is the second vintage of the Malbec from the stonier part of the Adrianna Vineyard in Gualtallary that is next to a dry river bed (the vineyard has 110 hectares that were planted in 1994). It fermented in open-top 500-liter oak barrels with full clusters. It was pressed before the end of fermentation, and it then finished fermenting without skins (like a white) and matured in 1,800-liter oak foudre for 18 months. It's a compact, super serious Malbec with concentration and power, great bala...

96 points James Suckling: "This is really complex and exotic with dark fruit, flowers and asphalt undertones. Full-bodied, soft and silky with a long and flavorful finish. A soft and sexy red. Drink now, but will improve with age." (03/2019) 95 points Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Malbec Catena Zapata Nicasia Vineyard is from a vineyard in the Paraje Altamira, which had the advantage of the good drainage of its soils and the benefit of the cooler year, resulting in some 30% less grapes. There also was more severe sorting that seems to have paid off, going b...

97 points James Suckling: "Enormously spicy with a dense tannin structure that makes this malbec spectacular and slightly erotic, too. A breathtakingly long finish that makes you want more. The balance of this is so good that you can drink it right now. If you can resist drinking it now, this probably has a couple of decades of aging potential." (02/2018) 94 points Wine Advocate: "I also tasted the 2015 Malbec Catena Zapata Nicasia Vineyard, which had been in bottle since July 2017. 2015 is a warmer and riper year within the three consecutive cooler El...

96 points Wine Advocate: "The 2013 Malbec Catena Zapata Nicasia Vineyard is produced with grapes from the vineyard that names it--a vineyard planted in 1997 in the Altamira zone of Valle de Uco. It's mostly Malbec with some 4% Cabernet Franc, but the two grapes fermented together. It has less Cabernet Franc than other years because 2013 was fresh enough that just that pinch provided enough of the character they are looking for. They call this "the most Malbec of our Malbecs" and it has the textbook aromas of violets and red berries with perfectly integra...
