There's no amount of Caol Ila that we're not interested in. This wonderful distillery on the northern shore of Islay remains one of the great values for independent bottlers. The gorgeous maritime character and medium peat style is an approachable way into the Islay category, but isn't in the slightest bit too tame for seasoned peat lover. The old distillery was founded in 1846 overlooking the Islay Strait for which its name. Across from the distillery the majestic paps of Jura sit calmly in the distance. Considering the incredible volumes this distiller...

The old distillery just to the north of Port Askaig was founded in 1881. It's become one of the best loved Islay malts, despite its normally gentle character. We've had several lovely casks of naked Bunnah over the last few years, but this one truly stands out. The great northern Islay distiller is renowned for capturing that ocean character without relying on heavy peat smoke. In fact, the distillery makes sure to note that their whisky contain less than 2 ppm of phenol, making it one of two regularly produced unpeated Islay malts, but this little whisk...

Caol Ila 10 Year Old "Hart Brothers" Single Hogshead Cask Strength Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
Top Pick!
This perfect cask of Caol Ila from the excellent Glasgow blender and bottler Hart Brothers is the first Islay cask that they've yet to furnish K&L exclusively. Filled into a high-quality hogshead, this famously ocean-y peater is in full form here. Full bodied and intense, the weighty mouth feel is contrasted by the tangy seaside character. We rarely come across young Caol Ila that's not excellent, but occasionally we are happy to encounter some that are truly superlative. This is obviously in the latter category.

Caol Ila 14 Year Old "Dramfool's Middle Cut" Cask #313321 Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
Top Pick!
These two casks of Caol Ila from Dramfool mark the start of something truly special. Not only are they the first full private casks they've sold as an exclusive to a retailer, they are part of an amazing set with a compelling cask history. They provide a rare opportunity to build both a horizontal and vertical tasting from a single set of casks. In April of 2021 all four casks were reracked into the freshly empt...

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "A seductive brininess and waves of oily peat-reek greet the olfactory sense. The palate entry finds a surprisingly buttery-creamy leaning along with the peat-reek; at midpalate the flavor becomes concentrated, oily, malty sweet, and only moderately peaty. Ends on a sweet malty note. Builds from stage to stage, each phase being better than the last. *Best Buy* (PP) " (06/2006) Wine Spectator: "The first flush is fruity, with cherry and ripe berries, and then the smoke wafts in." (03/2017) Whisky Advocate: "Funny to think ho...

90 points Whisky Advocate: "A no age statement Bunnahabhain destined to replace the existing 12 year old, matured in first and second-fill sherry casks. Raisins, fruit spice, furniture polish, and roasted nuts on the nose, along with an edge of brine. Rich and full-bodied in the mouth, with malt, sweet sherry, and cotton candy, plus cloves and a sprinkling of sea salt. The finish offers red berries, lively spice, and dark chocolate. (GS, Spring 2019)" K&L Notes: The new entry-level offering from Bunnahabhain is pronounced "stew-rahdur." The company has ...
