There's no amount of Caol Ila that we're not interested in. This wonderful distillery on the northern shore of Islay remains one of the great values for independent bottlers. The gorgeous maritime character and medium peat style is an approachable way into the Islay category, but isn't in the slightest bit too tame for seasoned peat lover. The old distillery just to the north of Port Askaig was founded in 1881. It's become one of the best loved Islay malts, despite its normally gentle character. We've had several lovely casks of naked Bunnah over the last few years, but this one truly stands out. This perfect cask of Caol Ila from the excellent Glasgow blender and bottler Hart Brothers is the first Islay cask that they've yet to furnish K&L exclusively. Filled into a high-quality hogshead, this famously ocean-y peater is in full form here. Full bodied and intense, the weighty mouth feel is contrasted by the tangy seaside character. We rarely come across young Caol Ila that's not excellent, but occasionally we are happy to encounter some that are truly superlative. This is obviously in the latter category.
