Suntory "Hibiki Japanese Harmony" Japanese Whisky (750ml)
Top Pick!
91 points Wine Enthusiast: "The newest blended whisky offering from Hibiki is burnished gold in the glass and has a bold aroma that mixes vanilla, fresh pear and a hint of smoke. The smokiness comes forward at the first sip, wrapping around a core of oak and vanilla custard and finishing long, with a mouthwatering bitter chocolate note. *Best of 2016* (KN)" (03/2016) 90 points Whisky Advocate: "Poised and complex, with typically lifted fruitiness: strawberry ice cream, pineapple, peach, balanced by delicate oak, bamboo shoot-like delicacy, then lemon. ...

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "The lightly smoky sea-breeze aroma entices on the nose. The palate opens with bolder peat smoke underpinned by vanilla and coconut, finishing with a mouthwatering salt-and-pepper accent. Adding water pulls it all together, creating an effect like vanilla cookies sprinkled with coarse sea salt, plus a puff of peat smoke. This was matured in ex-Madeira casks for two years, then transferred to Mizunara oak for ocean maturation for a final six years. (KN)" (03/2021) 90 points Whisky Advocate: "This is utterly unique; made from i...

Kaiyo is a negotiant bottler started by a drinks group led by former Asahi employee Mr. Watanabe. He was able to purchase "teaspooned" malt whisky barrels from an unnamed Japanese whisky supplier via his connections in the industry ("teaspooning" is when a distiller adds a teaspoon of another whisky into the barrel before selling it, thus preventing the purchaser from claiming it as a single malt from that distillery). The whiskies are purchased as teaspooned new make (unaged distillates) and then put into Japanese Mizunara oak barrels from Ariake, consi...

Suntory Toki Japanese Whisky (750ml)
Top Pick!
Wine & Spirits: "While it may seem that our world is suddenly awash in Japanese single malts, the fact is that we’re already in a shortage. Last year, as demand continued to build for its limited stocks, Suntory took the age statement off its Hibiki, suggesting less of the precious older stocks were being used. This year, they’ve introduced Toki, a welcome addition to the portfolio. Whereas Hibiki is a burnished, complex sipper, Suntory’s latest release, Toki, is a light, bright, perky spirit with a surprising punch of flavor—apple, citrus and honey note...

Located in the town of Akashi, near the famed city of Kobe in Japan, White Oak distillery has been in operation since 1919; although very few Americans are familiar with the whisky. Owned by Eigashima, it is actually the oldest operating distillery in Japan, having received its license four years before Yamazaki produced any whisky, despite the fact that it would be another forty years before they actually used it. The single malt whisky has no age statement, but has plenty of rich malty flavor and a supple fruited character that should please fans of th...

Kaiyo "K&L Exclusive" Cask #541 Cask Strength Japanese Whisky (750ml)
Top Pick!
Like so many Japanese whiskies that have come to the market in recent years, Kaiyo remains an enigma. It tastes delicious, there is a tantalizing background story to the brand, but the level of detail a whisky geek desires always seem in short supply. No matter. Ultimately, when the price is right and the whisky tastes great, we are here to pull the trigger. The two casks are similar in their story but very different in the final profile. Both are Japanese in origin, presumably teaspooned malt from the same source. They were placed into Mizunara oak for ...

Suntory is the biggest name in Japanese whiskey, playing a pivotal, some might say definitive, role in establishing the category as a global market phenomenon. Indeed, many of the most sought-after, benchmark labels are distilled and bottled under the Suntory banner. So, it was only a matter of time before they threw their hat into the clear spirits game. Enter Haku, an ultra-premium vodka distilled from the finest white rice. From the producer: "HAKU Vodka, brought to life by the House of Suntory, is a Japanese premium craft vodka made from 100 percent ...

91 points Wine Enthusiast: "This was aged in Japan’s rare Mizunara oak for the entirety of its maturation, which includes three-month ocean maturation. Look for a tawny hue and orange peel and spice aromas. The light palate opens with charred oak, burnt orange peel and clove. Adding water brings out more honey, cayenne and cinnamon, plus distant campfire smoke. (KN)" (03/2021) 90 points Whisky Advocate: "Fully matured in mizunara oak on land and sea, this has tangy orange, ground ginger, fennel seed, cedar, and incense, though it seems a little more ti...

90 points Whisky Advocate: "A unifying blend of 10 year old Chichibu, with select stocks of American, Canadian, Irish, and scotch whiskies matured in Japan, produces a nose of toffee apple, firm caramel, milk chocolate, ground hazelnut, roasted fennel seed, chopped cilantro stalks, green banana, and struck match. Cereal-led palate with Golden Grahams, light fruits of apricot, peach, and melon, base notes of pepper, moving through butterscotch, toffee, maple syrup, and crème caramel. (JM, fall 2020)" K&L Notes: This unusual whisky takes advantage of Jap...

Nagurayama Brewing Company is located in the Aizu region of Fukushima Prefecture, from antiquity a major brewing center, and has produced ginjo sake since 1973. Fukushima is one of Japan’s most bountiful regions, blessed with mountains, streams and rich farmlands. Nagurayama’s ginjo sakes reflect this abundance, with aromatic sakes whose most noticeable characteristics are their delicate sweetness and smooth drinkability. Master's touch is the perfect example of the aromatic sakes for which Fukushima is famed. Distinctly sweet at first sip, clean and smo...

Whisky Advocate: "Prunes, barbecue seasonings, and hoisin sauce, sweetened by rich caramel; soak up the heady aromatics. Gloopy texture on the palate explodes into life with burnt orange, dried mango, and banoffee pie, spiraling down to black licorice, burnt oak, and Brazil nut. The name acknowledges Kiichiro Iwai’s role in ushering in whisky making for Hombo Shuzo in the 1960s, drawing on the notes diligently recorded by Masataka Taketsuru in Scotland. (JM, Fall 2017)" K&L Notes: The Mars distillery is very well regarded in Japan despite the low price ...

Nikka is continuing to expand its Coffey Still lineup with the addition of a new gin and vodka to complement the malt and grain-based whiskies distilled on the multi-story apparatus located in the Miyagikyo distillery. Using Japanese citrus varieties like yuzu, kabosu, amanatsu and shikuwasa, as well as sansho pepper and apples, the gin is a burst of fresh and fruity delights. That bright citric element is then paired with juniper, angelica, coriander and lemon peel to bolster it with a clean and aromatic finish. The result is familiar, yet completely un...

90 points Whisky Advocate: " Boosting the ABV gives this more versatility for whisky-based cocktails, but neat, there are aromas of honey, barley, exotic woods, ripening pear, box-fresh sneakers, citrus, and fruity acids, with the spices turned down low. A convoluted profile winds through vanilla, sugar cubes, and honey fudge, followed by pear, apricot, and a gentle crescendo of spice, before hitting a plateau of honey, breakfast cereal, nougat, and white chocolate to finish. *Best Value* (JM, Fall 2020)" K&L Notes: The history of the excellent Mars Di...

The Mars distillery is very well regarded in Japan and is easily considered the "super third" after the famous Suntory and Nikka distilleries. They don't focus exclusively on traditional single malt and are prone to experiment. They only produce whisky in the winter months so production is very small. This one is produced on the traditional pot stills at Shinshu Mars which was hand crafted in the 1950s. It is an unusual blend of 65% corn, 10% Rye, and 25% non peated malt. The fat, wide stills produce a very weighty and complex spirit. Mars always deliver...

90 points Whisky Advocate: "Blended from imported whiskies along with Chichibu, the component whiskies in blue label are at least 10 years old, but often much older. The aromas tease with barley sugar, smoked venison, aromatic pan-roasted spices, peppercorn, and smoked paprika. Pepper and root ginger pummel sweet orange flavors of sherbet and Creamsicle. The citrus sweetness sees off the hefty spices, leaving the mouth awash with creamy orange peel notes and tropical fruits. (JM, Winter 2020)"

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "The name of this whisky has nothing to do with coffee—rather, it's named for a type of still invented by Aneas Coffey, which is used to make this golden spirit. It offers mild vanilla-pear aromatics and is relatively light and silky on the palate. Look for a light vanilla sweetness at first, which gives way to a rounded dark chocolate note and baking spice finish. Recommended for highballs and other mixed drinks. (KN)" (03/2016) K&L Notes: Nikka is continuing to expand its Coffey Still line-up with the addition of a new gin ...

This special gin, distilled blended and bottled in Kyoto, is a classic dry gin with a distinct Japanese twist. Starting with a rice spirit base and traditional dry gin botanicals, the Ki No Bi adds yellow yuzu, Japanese cypress wood, bamboo, gyokuro tea and Japanese green sansho peppercorns. The result is a tantalizing burst of unique and exotic flavors around an already spectacular and familiar dry gin. A excellent addition to the ever expanding selection of quality gins coming from around the world.

We have been waiting for years for this to finally arrive in the US. It's hands down the finest tea based gin available. Here's the history from the producer: "KI NO TEA is our product created by collaboration with tea-grower and blender, Hori-Shichimeien, founded in the Meiji era in 1879. Based in the famous Uji region to the south of Kyoto city, a number if super-premium Uji teas have been specially selected to form the heart of KI NO TEA. Tencha and Gyokuro provide intense aromas and depth of flavour with a wonderful sweetness that occurs naturally in...
