1998 Du Tertre 20 Year Old Single Barrel Cask Strength Calvados Pays d'Auge (750ml)
Top Pick!
The Havard brothers Michel and Hubert make cider from the 30 different varieties of apples they work with along with small batches of calvados. The rarity here is that single casks are usually kept back when harvests are on the small side, so the fact that just under a 100 bottles made it stateside after aging for 20 years, makes this extra special. After fermenting 6 months on native yeasts it is then distilled in a 500 liter column still followed by 18 years in a 600 liter ex-Cognac cask. It is then bottled full proof, unblended and non chill-filtered....

The Giard family has been producing Calvados in the Pays d'Auge for 11 generations. The Domaine du Montreuil orchard was planted on land formerly covered by the sea, and it exhibits a distinctive apple flavor. This Calvados offers a robust fruity nose, with woody undertones. Zesty qualities and apple blossom honey notes round out the palate and lead to a lively finish.

93 points Vinous: "More proof that younger Calvados have a purity and depth missing from many unaged spirts. Three years old, and greenish-yellow in color, this brandy has a gregarious nose, with aromas of apple pie and even pineapple turnover. But on the palate, there is both juicy acidity and an overarching roundness, still at the relatively high alcohol level. Fresh, dry, truly drinkable, both neat and in cocktails. A great value. (AOC Pays d’Auge, 44% abv.) - JW" (11/2018) K&L Notes: The wonderful calvados produced by the Giard Family is one of the...

Giard is one of Pays D'auge's very best producers and traces its roots in the area back to the 1700s. Patrice Giard is the man in charge, taking over from his father Roger. The family's 30 hectares of orchards is one of the region's most picturesque, but this remains artisanal production at its core. Apples are collected only after they've fallen naturally to the ground. No dwarf root stock here. Patrice prefers traditional varietals for their high phenol levels and has over 200 head of cattle who graze the 3000 tree orchards, providing fertilizer and fo...

Lemorton Calvados comes from the southern appellation of Domfrontais. In this appellation at least 30% of the cider in the Calvados must be made from pears. This 6-year-old is elegant and beautiful, with more than 60% of the blend coming from pear. The apple, however, is what shines through and the Lemorton succeeds, more than any other Calvados we offer, in showcasing the bright acidity of the fruit along with soft touches of baking spice. Fantastic Calvados.

Fresh, powerful, fine, and round in mouth. Bright colour with copper nuances. This young Calvados, with its slightly woody flavor and pronounced apple aroma, would be an ideal match for cook dishes, long drinks and cocktails.

From the distiller: "While the fruit is still dominant, the blend of Lecompte 12 renders it more complex and more intense than its younger sibling, with a remarkable aromatic maturity. Elegant cinnamon and nutmeg aromas rub shoulders with complex hints of caramelised apples and roasted hazelnuts, punctuated by a f...

95 points Vinous: "Pinning down the term hors d’age is a moving target, but this bottling by Michel Huard stands at the older end, with a minimum of 10-year-old spirits, along with a significant percentage that is more than 25 years old. Golden-colored, it opens with a gorgeous, old-time nose - rustic in the best sense of the word. There’s woodiness here, from the nose to the finish, but it’s an attractive virtue, with deep and well-integrated. There’s balanced aromas and flavors of tarte tatin, with notes of pepper and even salted licorice. In the mouth...

As you go up Camut's range of Calvados you start to see how the immense care they take in the cellar translates to what's in the bottles. The 6-year is fresh, forward, and fruity. The 12-year starts to bring the darker riper apple flavors into the mix. The 18-year begins the transition toward the savory and nutty character that is often exhibited in old Calvados. While the whole line is exceptional, the subtle differences between the expressions are a connoisseur's dream, the Réserve de Semainville is honestly in a totally different league. It states "a...

93 points, 2015 Ultimate Spirits Challenge: "Excellent, Highly Recommended. Tasting Notes: Bright on the nose, it is reminiscent of applesauce and white grapes. In the mouth it is spicy and complex with Meyer lemon, white flowers and deep clover honey. The play between savory and sweet is intriguing."

Like many farmers in Normandy, the Groult family, who own the property, would make cider and Calvados in addition to raising dairy cattle. In the late 1800s, Pierre Groult decided to focus on making Calvados. Now run by the fourth generation, the family still uses apples from their own orchards, as well as some from their neighbors. Drink this during a meal, as is the tradition in Normandy, or alongside local cheeses like Camembert or Pont l'Eveque.

Didier and Martine Lemorton have a wonderful farm. About one hundred cows fill their barn and orchards of pear and apple trees surround it. You can tell a lot about their lifestyle by shaking their hands.Their palms are hard and calloused from the hard manual labor they perform on a daily basis. They've never been on an airplane and they've never had a day off. Their Lemorton Calvados comes from the southern appellation of Domfrontais and in this appellation at least 30% of the cider in the Calvados must be made from pears. The 1980 vintage uses some of ...
