Whisky Advocate: "Blends of single pot still and single malt Irish whiskey without grain deserve their own category, but there's no use crying about it. Roasted spices, Quaker Oats, light honey, and fresh apricot; a little reserved and demure. Golden honey sweetness, light citrus, green apple, peach pit, dried apricot, cereal notes, creamy vanilla, and a firm strand of pot still spiciness. Dry spice heat, citrus peel, and a dark vanilla aftertaste. (JM, Fall-2017)" K&L Notes: The elusive Writer's Tears Pot Still Irish Whiskey has been a darling of the w...

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Aged in former bourbon, sherry and Malaga casks, look for a deep orange-gold hue and inviting baked-pear aroma. The robust, spiced palate offers brown sugar, honey, golden raisins and vanilla-tinged baked pear. (KN)" (03/2017) Whisky Advocate: "It works like this: triple distilled single pot still whiskey matured in bourbon, sherry, and Malaga casks, which produce a complex drink with aromas of red fruits, spice, nutmeg-dusted custard tarts, blossom honey, dried raspberry, clotted cream, cracked black pepper, and sweet flowe...

Midleton's Very Rare vintage releases have skyrocketed in price in the last few years. Widely regarded as one of the finest Irish whiskies available, it's one of the few that has a reasonable claim to being worth the higher prices. We have of course done our best to keep the pricing as low as possible. While the average price has moved north of $300/bottle, we're holding strong at $250.

The West Cork Distillery started as a pet project by John O’ Connell, Denis McCarthy, and Ger McCarthy in 2003 in Union Hall, West Cork. In 2013, after much expansion, WCD moved to a larger distillery in Skibbereen, West Cork where it now resides. It now operates as only one of two independent distilleries in Ireland. That means they actually make their own whiskey that somehow, someway costs about the same as a bottle of 10-year-old Bushmills, despite the fact that they're an independent distillery with heaven knows how much debt and overhead to account...

91 points Whisky Advocate: "A heart of pot still spices, but this has oodles of complexity and depth with concentrated autumnal flavors of apple and blackberry cooked with brown sugar, then morello cherry, hazelnut, allspice, aged tobacco leaf, and worn leather. Mellow dark-toffee sweetness and cooked fruits carry the cinnamon and peppercorn, oak, and leather into a tongue-pounding finish. A slap in the chops—just what you want from a pot still whiskey. (JM, Spring 2019)" K&L Notes: The legendary Red Spot has finally returned after a 50-year gap in prod...

92 points Whisky Advocate: "With a well-matured sherry cask character, this whiskey works beautifully paired with Belgian chocolates after a fine dinner. Rich dried fruits, molasses, prunes, black cherry, aromatic spice rubs, walnut oil, and savory juices on the nose. Luxuriant palate of raisin, stewed fruits, black coffee, treacle, pepper, and clove, with a slight savory return. It rounds off with toffee apple, Brazil nut, and a long finish of peppercorn. Another excellent barrel this year. (JM, Fall-2021)" K&L Notes: High proof, well aged, Irish Singl...

Whisky Advocate: "An Irish blend matured in used bourbon barrels and finished in Concannon Petite Sirah wine barrels. Very clean and fresh, with mouth-coating honeyed malt, vanilla, tropical fruit, and golden raisin. Fleeting, light oak finish. (Vol. 21, #1)" K&L Notes: The result of a teaming of Ireland's Cooley Distillery and Concannon Vineyards, this Irish Whiskey was distilled from malted barley and corn and initially aged in American Bourbon barrels. To impart a uniquely fruity character before bottling, it was then finished for a minimum of four m...

Clonakilty's Port Cask Finished Irish Whiskey is a premium blend of Irish malt and grain. Triple-distilled and subtly cut with water naturally filtered through the coastal rock formations surrounding the Atlantic Ocean warehouse. This whiskey is defined by its exceptional finish in port casks from the Douro Valley, infusing it with rich dark fruit notes and soft spice. Bottled at 43.6% ABV it starts with a nose showcasing freshness of sweet apples, ripe peaches, vanilla, and a hint of wood character in the background. The palate is treated to a symphony ...

Clonakilty's double-distilled premium Irish Single Malt is warehoused on the Atlantic coast, imbuing it with a distinctive maritime complexity. At 43.6% ABV, it unveils a nose of soft oak, sweet honey, and floral notes of plum and berries, creating an inviting aroma. The palate is treated to a blend of oak spice, touched with nuances of cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, and vanilla. The journey concludes with a finish dominated by drying spices that gradually give way to the creaminess of vanilla followed by a surprise ending note of blackcurrants and raspberries...

The Method and Madness line from Pernod's Irish Distillers (the maker of Midleton, Redbreast, and Jameson among many other top flight Irish whiskies) was first released in Ireland in 2017. It's finally made it to the United States. The project allows the masters at Midleton room to experiment with unique mashbills, distillation, and wood profiles outside of the traditional bounds of their staple products. Essentially there is a microdistillery within the walls of Midleton. Three unique expressions are in the first available flight in the US. The Single M...

93 points Whisky Advocate: "This new permanent addition to the Redbreast range is partially matured in ruby port casks, which have helped the vitality and the complexity of the finished whiskey while still delivering a remarkable intensity of red berry fruit. Orange peel, pine cone, vanilla, and walnut on the nose. Raspberry, cherry, plums, and active spices like a wildfire across the tongue, with pepper and chile heightened by the strength and menthol late on the finish. The Shed Distillery of PJ Rigney sits on the shores of Lough Allen in rural Drumshanbo. They’ve been patiently distilling and maturing the first whisky coming out of Connacht province in Western Ireland for over a century. This traditional Single Pot Irish Whiskey is worth the wait. The blend of malted and unmalted Irish barley sees a bit of Barra Irish Oats as well for a creamy addition to the texture and added depth of flavor. Matured in first fill ex Bourbon and Oloroso casks this is a superb example of Ireland’s distilling renaissance.

96 points Whisky Advocate: "Very elegant, complex, and stylish. Honeyed and silky in texture, with toffee, toasted marshmallow, nougat, maple syrup, banana bread, and a hint of toasted coconut. Bright fruit and golden raisin blend in nicely with the layers of sweetness. Impeccable balance and very approachable. Classic Irish whiskey! *Value Pick* (JH, Winter 2010) " 95 points Wine Enthusiast: "Sip or mix a

90-95 points Wine Enthusiast: "Nice aromas of roasted nuts, nougat, light toffee, candy bar, mild oak and brown sugar. Entry is satiny smooth, honeyed and near lush in texture; the midpalate point brings in spicy notes, in particular, black pepper and clove. The malt component takes charge in the finish, bringing a keen graininess." (12/2008) K&L Notes: One of the best Irish Whiskies in the store. This wonderful, elegant, unpeated malt has rich complexity and great length.

There was a time when there were only two distilleries in Ireland; they were, for a while, owned by the same company. Then this small distillery opens up, staunchly independent, and starts doing things unheard of in Ireland. Instead of making traditional Irish whiskey (triple-distilled, non-smoky, and with a pot still whiskey component), they started making very scotch-like whiskey (double distilled, single malt, and sometimes very smoky). Nearly twenty years later, they’re still making Irish whiskey, and they’re still doing it their way. Made by Cooly...

95 points Whisky Advocate: "The thicker, air-dried staves of Castanea sativa have a lower density and greater porosity than American oak. The different wood breakdown products enhance the pot still style, bringing confectionery sweetness, dark prunes, and effusive lighter spices. It rolls out a thick red carpet of sweet spice, cinnamon, and clove, with more pot still weight than oak tannins. Move over Redbreast; my pick from this crazy, experimental Irish Distillers range" K&L Notes: The Method and Madness line from Pernod's Irish Distillers (the maker ...

Announcing this year’s cask strength release, Writers’ Tears creator and Co-founder of Walsh Whiskey, Bernard Walsh, said: “Cask strength Irish whiskey is still quite rare, but our vatting combining both Pot Still and Single Malt is truly unique. Consumers are looking to trade-up their Irish whiskey experience and this is a genuine super-premium expression that has steadily built a following internationally over the last 12 years.”

95 points Wine Enthusiast: "The bold, fruit aroma suggests fresh-cut apples and honeysuckle, while the silky palate offers deep, bold flavor. Look for dark honey and clove, edging into tea, oak and cocoa midpalate. Apple freshness brightens the dry finish. An ice cube is the only adornment needed for this well-structured, tasty sipper. *Best Spirits of 2017* (KN)" (03/2017) 91 points Whisky Advocate: "Roll out the red carpet, because Green Spot is coming to town. 96 points Wine Enthusiast: " The mild, grassy aroma has a tinge of green apple. Meanwhile, the palate leads with brown sugar and caramel. A splash of water pulls a deep-toasted grain note forward, finishing with bitter espresso plus cardamom and black pepper heat. A bit of apple-y freshness returns on the complex exhale. 92 points Whisky Advocate: "Redbreast 12 year old is a classic pure pot still Irish whiskey; where can you go from there? This new 15 year old expression is more muscular (bottling at 46% and not chill filtering certainly helps), but there are trade-offs. It’s a bit closed on the nose (like a great Bordeaux wine that’s too young). I do enjoy the silky/oily texture, the bold resinous oak spice grip on the finish, and the rich nutty toffee, fig, black raspberry, chocolaty, chewy nougat throughout the palate. 90 points Whisky Advocate: "Basking in sweet grain flavors, this has a nose of golden granulated sugar, vanilla custard, banana chip, fudge, and strawberry jam on toast. Sugary sweet on the palate with vanilla sponge, lemon zest, and hints of plum initially, it's overturned by punchy pepper, clove, and ginger notes. Though there is milk chocolate, dark fruit, red gooseberry, apple peel, and coffee to finish, the finishing cask influence is a little reserved. 93 points Whisky Advocate: "The 120-year-old sherry house Lustau originally operated as an almacenista, but now produces a broad portfolio of wine styles in Jerez. The nose is intensely fragrant, bursting with fat dates and squidgy prunes, red apple and Battenburg cake. It’s fruity, yet bone dry, with oak, walnut, and spices. This is full-bodied yet refined Redbreast: the Spanish oak sherry butts shaping the red berry fruits, apples, marzipan, and creamy yet oily consistency. Clean, sweet oloroso finish. Qué delicioso! 92 points Whisky Advocate: "An easy-drinking cask-strength whiskey, the nose has an equal balance between fruit and spice, as red apple and bright cherry meet Chinese five spice, savory undertones, and salted nuts. This has big, chewy sherry notes; it’s quite nutty, and the spice starts building early on. Hold out till the end for black cherry, toffee, and burnt fruitcake, with a finish of autumnal fruits, menthol, and aniseed. Red apple, lemon peel, pithy orange, and crunchy red apple, teasing spice, with just a suggestion of mint mingled into the dry, spicy finish. A honeyed dram of melon, white grape, and clementine peel, with sparkling spices of black pepper and ginger root. 92 points Wine Enthusiast: "The former Bourbon barrels used to mature this whiskey were “charred and double charred,” the producer says, to coax more from the barrel wood. Look for an almost piña colada-like effect: coconut and tropical fruit aromas, and a rich, honey-soaked palate that shows caramelized pineapple and dried apricot. Whisky Advocate: "Meet the undisputed driver of the Irish whiskey resurgence. The nose is light, with baked apple strudel, toasty staves, and hints of the bourbon and sherry cask influence. There are discernible pot still elements contributing a fruity character and plenty of weight. This single malt has a nose of honey, apple pie with cream, light pepper, dried grasses, and green herbal notes.
