2023 Domaine d'Abrigeon "Coquelicot" Grenache Vin de France Rouge
Top Pick!
The village of Buisson was once a lesser desired site in the Southern Rhone. Sitting on the northern slope of the same hill where the south facing Rasteau and Cairanne lie, this was the cooler side where fruit didn't always achieve maximum ripeness. Nadia and Julien d’Abrigeon saw potential though and were looking for affordable land in the south. They dreamed of creating a biodynamic estate and this cooler site and 80+ year old established vines checked the right boxes for them. Julien had started his journey as a geologist but wanted to work closer...

100 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2020 Grenache Eleven Confessions Vineyard is another absolutely heavenly wine from this estate, and it's easily one of the top wines from California in 2020. Darker berries, tapenade, roasted herbs, and a bloody, iron-like character define the aromatics, and it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a deep, stacked mid-palate, velvety tannins, and a great, great finish. It reminds me of a Châteauneuf du Pape from the likes of Jean-Paul Daumen and is a tour de force in Grenache that I wish every reader could taste. Coming ...

97 points Int'l Wine Review: "The 2019 Cayuse 'God Only Knows' is once again a stunning wine from Christophe Baron, made from mostly Grenache that was sourced from the Armarda vineyard, situated on the ancient riverbed of the walla walla river. This immediately grabs your attention with its absolutely gorgeous aromas of raspberries and dark cherries which come together with dried florals, wet stones, spices and hints of grilled herbs all coming together in the glass. This is exudes class and refinement, as it possesses a wonderful silky texture that glid...

99 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2017 Grenache Eleven Confessions Vineyard, which will be the name going forward for this wine sourced exclusively from the Eleven Confessions Vineyard in the Sta. Rita Hills, reveals a gorgeous perfume of assorted red and blue fruits as well as iron, ground pepper, Asian spices, and herbes de Provence. Based on 88.7% Grenache, 10.6% Syrah, and the rest Viognier, this full-bodied, ultra-fine, deep, layered Grenache is just about as good as it gets. Drink it any time over the coming 10-15 years. It’s worth pointing out that due ...

99 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Tasted out of bottle, the 2020 Grenache Distenta II is total blockbuster stuff that's darker and richer than the 2021. Red and black fruits, white pepper, classy leather, and spicy baking chocolate-like nuances all define the aromatics, and it’s deep, full-bodied, and beautifully balanced, with gorgeous tannins and a great finish. The blend is 78% Grenache, 9% Mourvèdre, 8% Syrah, and the rest Petite Sirah (with a splash of Viognier), and it's going to knock your socks off any time over the coming 15+ years." 100 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The late bottled 2019 Grenache Eleven Confessions Vineyard is another undeniably great wine from this incredible estate and it tops out my scale. Based on 89% Grenache, 6% Syrah, 4% Petite Sirah, and the balance Gelber Muskateller (Muscat Blanc), all from the Eleven Confessions Vineyard in the Sta. Rita Hills, it spent 39 months in 50% new French oak, with the balance in 2- to 5-year-old barrels. It's a powerful, full-bodied, opulent Grenache that brings to mind a great vintage of Domaine de Marcoux's Vieilles Vignes with its gor...

100 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2018 Grenache Eleven Confessions Vineyard comes all from the estate vineyard located on the eastern side of the Sta. Rita Hills and is even more Grenache-dominated, checking in at close to 84% Grenache with 9% Syrah, 6% Petite Sirah, and the rest Viognier. Aged a whopping 38 months in 52% new barrels, it has an insane bouquet of black raspberries, herbes de Provence, violets, mulled cherries, sandalwood, and new leather. As complex and nuanced as they come, this full-bodied beauty has awesome purity of fruit, a layered, balan...

99 points The Wine Independent: "Medium to deep garnet in color with a touch of purple, it charges out of the gate with powerful notes of warm blackberries, baked plums, red currant jelly, and star anise, giving way to wafts of rose oil, wild sage, and Sichuan pepper. The full-bodied palate is coated with rich, densely laden red and black fruit preserves flavors, beautifully supported by a lively backbone of freshness and firm, grainy tannins, finishing long with provocative mineral sparks. Rita Hills and a blend of 77% Grenache, 22% Syrah and 1% Viognier (fermented with 25% whole clusters), the 2011 Grenache Patine spent a full 33 months in almost all neutral oak, with just 11% being new. It offers perfumed and spice-laced notes of white pepper, black raspberry, blackberry and ground herbs that flow to a full-bodied, elegant, nicely concentrated 2011 that has nicely integrated acidity, no hard edges and a terrific finish. The 2018s from this estate are brilliant across the board and shine for their purity, focus, and precision. Black raspberries, white pepper, new saddle leather, and beautiful floral and spicy notes all soar from the glass, and it's medium to full-bodied, with a seamless, layered mouthfeel, beautiful tannins, and a great finish. Beautiful black raspberries, ground pepper, sandalwood, and sappy flower notes are just some of the nuances in this beauty, and it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a pure, layered, seamless mouthfeel, beautifully polished tannins, and a great, great finish. Classic Lato on the palate with its medium to full-bodied, seamless texture, it has a core of sweet fruit, ultra-fine tannins, and a great finish. They estimate a 25% decrease in yields, but the grapes picked before the rain delivered fresh wines with good aging potential. This finished at 14.6% alcohol and with good freshness and acidity. 97 points Wine Advocate: "The 2022 Farvie Grenache hails from a warm and dry year, and this is the first time I've seen this wine—professionally or socially. The bouquet leads with graphite and raspberry leaf tea, iodine and crushed shells, rust and fresh blood, layers of white pepper and tobacco. Stylistically, I feel this 2022 is in line with the 2018, and it looks utterly sensational here today; it's elegant and complete, composed and detailed. It's very long through the finish and lingers and curls with wisps of incense spice, chalky tannins and Asia...

Bold tannins slowly fill the palate and then recede into a soft, spicy finish. (MD)" (09/2023) K&L Notes: Cellers Grifoll Declara is a Priorat project that is based in the village of El Molar. The first thing that you will notice after you have brought this box of wine home with you is that it says Rioja nowhere on it. The appellation prohibits wine being packaged in the format to carry the name Rioja. This is 100% Viura that is grown in clay limestone soils in a vineyard that was planted in 1973. Fermented and aged for a short period of time in Stainless steel. This is a bright and vibrant wine with aromas and flavors of citrus, apples and pears. Crisp and dry, this is an ideal wine for this format. An uncomplicated refreshing wine.

It's a light red with 13.5% alcohol, a medium body and good freshness with brightness and pretty notes, perfumed and fresh. It's elegant, with finesse, and has much more elegant tannins. It's more serious, less rustic. 75,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2023. (LG)"" ...

Now, they are ensconced in a spacious, architecturally-dramatic, Napa-like facility at the entrance to the town. Viticultural practice is evolving in a biodynamic direction, they report; primary vinification takes place in cement (stainless steel being used only...

Antonio Galloni writes in Vinous: "Nikolas and Julia Krankl were forced to change the name of their winery because of trademark issues, so Faethm is now Fingers Crossed. Everything else is the same as before. There is a white blend, a Grenache and a Syrah, all made in minuscule quantities. The 2018s pick up where the debut 2017s left off. I won't be surprised if the 2018s turn out to be even better than these notes suggest, as I tasted them right after bottling. The wines are rich and sumptuous, but as I wrote last year, Nikolas and Julia Krankl have a s...

The full clusters were foot trodden and fermented with indigenous yeasts with a maceration of 20 days. It matured in concrete vat and 3,000-liter oak vat for one year. Such a lovely, appealing, friendly wine. Full of fruit, with a gentle structure. It's ripe but not jammy, and very well balanced, with no access alcohol. Plenty of of whole bunches, from vines aged five to 40 years; grapes are lightly crushed, 12-15 days maceration, one pumpover per day, matured in concrete, sulphited only after malolactic, no other corrections.(MW)" (11/2024)

94 points Wine Advocate: "The 2022 Arroyo del Tórtolas is a single-vineyard Garnacha from a plot that achieves higher ripeness, and it has the palest color of the 2022s. This is the wine that they consider "wilder," and it has higher alcohol (15%) but also higher acidity, which compensates for the ripeness. It's spicy and heady but delicate, juicy and fine-boned, with very fine tannins and a long finish where you notice the warm year. It doesn't have the density of the 2020, but it’s aromatic, complex, nuanced, and has fabulous length on the finish.
