Chateau de la Grangerie is a property that was built in the 17th century right next to an old monastery. The church and the housing for its servants was actually built in the 11th and 12th centuries and since the Armagnac is aged inside that facility, it might be the only spirit at K&L matured on hallowed grounds. Like many Tenereze producers, Grangerie distills only Ugni Blanc for its brandies. However, the sandy and gravel-rich soils are much more like the terrain found in the Bas-Armagnac. They fill about ten barrels a year, two of which are used for ...

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Mild, sweet mango and coconut aromas lead into a mouthwateringly tart, fruity palate. Vanilla and coconut take over into the smooth, elegant finish, exiting with a sprinkle of sweet cinnamon. (KN)" (05/2020) K&L Notes: The magnificent Casa Dragones has been blowing it up in the high-end tequila market. They've finally made their exquisite lowland tequila available to the masses. This surprisingly approachable blanco has all the finesse and structure of the Joven, but without the sweet vanilla and spice oak. This shows tons o...

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "A honey hue and rich vanilla aroma mark this six-year-old rye whiskey. The palate nods to its 100% rye grain mash bill, opening with brisk cinnamon and allspice sparks that round into mellower vanilla and caramel midpalate, finishing long and spiced. Adding water brings more vanilla to the fore and adds a toasted grain note to the finish. *Top 100 Spirits of 2019* (KN)" (09/2019) 90 points Whisky Advocate: "Buttered bread, brown sugar, pecan pie, lemon juice, nutmeg, marzipan, and fresh pound cake highlight a warm and inviti...

Created by Casa San Nicolas in Arandas, Mayenda Tequila uses some innovative techniques to amp up the flavor in a natural way. The first is through maceration. Before the final distillation, roasted piñas of Blue Weber agave and agave miel are macerated in the base distillate. This adds a more intense flavor of ripe and cooked agave to the final tequila in the same way botanicals are added to most gins. The result is a super flavorful and intense tequila that blends the art of traditional production with creative technique that doesn't rely on adjuncts t...

A true gem from the Angel's Envy single barrel program. The brand that brought cask finishing in Bourbon into the mainstream continues to bottle stellar Kentucky Straight Bourbon with that added kick of quality port wine barrels. For years the only high proof offering from the brand was the meager handful of cask strength bottles we received each year which sell for hundreds of dollars and were virtually unobtainable. Now we can lock in a full barrel at 55% ABV (the same proof as the highly sought after Russell's Single Barrels) and just a couple of poin...

The wonderful Daniel Bouju has become renowned to our customers for his light and ultra fresh "Fine Saveur" offering. Nothing is added nor taken away from this high proof blend with a minimum of 15 years of age. It's dark, dry, powerful stuff, but not without a nuanced elegance...

Ardbeg's Note: ABV 48.2% Color Amber Cask Innovative Cask charring technique Nose Earthy, dusty, and biscuity on the nose, this is a most curious Ardbeg, almost from an alternative universe. The sooty/tarry notes are clear but restrained, and balanced by silky vanilla. Taste Peppery and warming, preceding an explosion of fiery, spicy flavors: Chili chocolate, bittersweet mocha, briar wood, birch tar, black pepper and smoked artichokes. Before you start thinking of Little Miss Muffet, let me tell you that this might be the best vodka we carry in the entire store, period. Styles vary tremendously across Armagnac and Domaine Séailles' flavor profile falls firmly in the middle between the two extremes of woody or fruity. The small 2.5 acre plot of Ugni Blanc on clay limestone soils makes for a brandy that has generous fruit, but a mineral backbone that stands up to long aging in French oak. As the brandy crests the 30 year mark it begins to develop distinct secondary sweetness notes as the fruit/wood interplay develops. Lots of maple/molasses/honey tones mark the '89 without sacrificing fruit. The stone fruit flavors jump o...

Ransom's full production line offers tremendous value and an incredible glimpse into spirits of the past when nearly everything was done in house. Their Old Tom GIn is the most popular old tom in our store, but their classic gin deserves every bit as much attention. Distilled from malted two row barley that is grown, fermented, and distilled on the 40 acre farm in Oregon, it has a weight and texture unlike nearly any other gin on the market. The botanical infusion is juniper and grain forward and the local botanicals include marionberries and hops. At 8...

Once one of the most sought-after names in Kentucky bourbon, Fortuna is a well-regarded brand making a comeback. Founded by Phil Hollenbach in the 1870s and distilled at the famous Glencoe Distillery, Fortuna has been reimagined by the Rare Character team: Pablo Moix, Andy Shapira and Pete Nevenglosky. The goal of the brand has remained the same for more than a century: to share "the taste of good fortune." Hollenbach was a legendary gentleman. After emigrating from Germany in 1869, he ran a blender and bottler, finding success by the late 1870s. His p...

A small domain located in Tenareze, Domaine Séailles has been a pioneer in the region for organic viticulture and has been certified as such since 2002. Their estate consists of just 25 hectares, mostly dedicated to the production of wine. On the Armagnanc side of things, just 2.5 hectares are dedicated to a small yearly production of Ugni Blanc specifically for distillation. Grown on the clay limestone soils characteristic of Tenareze, the wine from these vineyards is distilled every January on an old, wood-fired continuous still. The spirit is aged in ...

The wonderful Auchroisk distillery is one of Speyside's truly unsung heroes. Often filled into subpar casks, intended only for blending, its unique character can still shine through even when the wood is lacking. Add a great, high-quality barrel and you've got a recipe for a gem. The fact that it's so affordable shouldn't scare off the more discerning malt nuts out there. We're the lucky beneficiaries of some outstanding relationships in Scotland, which has afforded us unparalleled access and pricing in the market. The Auchroisk distillery is relatively...

(PP)" (08/2007) K&L Notes: El Dorado Rum is made by Demerara Distillers Limited in Guyana, perhaps the single greatest rum producer on the planet. Having operated since the 1600s, it supplied the British Royal Navy with rum for more than...

Benriach is quickly becoming one of the most attractive names in Scotch. They've won some huge awards, particularly for their slightly smoky 12 year old expression designed by the illustrious Rachel Barrie. Rachel is extremely adept at developing products that offer nuance and complexity, while not compromising on flavor. What we don't see much out of most distilleries these days are LOUD whiskies - ones that step up and shout at you. And while we don't always want to be screamed at, it's impossible to deny the thrilling feeling of getting packed into a ...

1985 Domaine de Baraillon 38 Year Old K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Bas-Armagnac (750ml)
If there were ever a romantic ideal for French countryside distillation, the Baraillons are it. Out in the middle of nowhere, there's nothing glossed over or touristic about their operation - they are farmers, pure and simple. David and I absolutely fell in love with this father/daughter team even though they hardly said a word to us the entire time we tasted (they let their booze speak for itself). This single barrel 1985 brandy is one of the finest spirits we tasted on the entire trip. A mix of Ugni Blanc and Baco, the nose is absolutely hypnotizing - ...

The concept of building a new distillery in this remote place isn't straightforward, but founder Anderson "Burr" Bakewell believed the unique feel of this special island could be captured—quite literally—in a bottle. The rare and elusive spirit of the Isle of Harris, which had historically drawn a special type of soul to it, was dwindling. The population slowly diminished, drawn away by modernity and the promise of prosperity on the mainland. Burr Bakewell gathered a group of like-minded individuals, who believed that the Isle still had much to give it...

90-95 points Wine Enthusiast: "The bouquet features smells of new car leather, breakfast cereal, cornmeal, pepper and hemp. Concludes oaky sweet and chewy. *Superb, Highly Rated*" (12/2008) 90 points Whisky Advocate: "One of the few remaining age-stated bourbons. Henry McKenna’s color is beautiful.
