Whisky Advocate: "Although only two years older, this expression of Hakushu — the first to be launched in the U.S. — shows a fleshier side to the distillery’s wares. While it has retained the freshness of the 10 year old, it shows more pineapple and grapefruit on the nose, with a little fragrance of jasmine and osmanthus. On the palate, it’s fresh and lively with a hint of persimmon and a tickle of smoke. Recommended. (DB, Spring 2012)" K&L Notes: Suntory's Hakushu, known as the "forest distillery," was built in 1973 as a sister distillery to Suntory's ...

This beautiful cask of Blair Athol is truly the star of our 2023 campaign. We rarely get access to such exceptional old malt and if you've been following the K&L Exclusives, this will easily compare to the wonderful 25 year Cragganmore we sold last year. The Blair Athol malt is an absolute dream and when you put it into high quality casks, it can produce one of the Highland's most complex and delicious whiskies. Founded in 1798 by John Steward and Robert Robertson, it changed hands many times until eventually being mothballed in 1932. IT was after that t...

This unprecedented cask of Ardmore is as unusual as it is delicious. The famous Highland peater was built at Kennethmont, Aberdeenshire in 1898. The spiritual home of the once popular Teacher's Highland Cream, its original owner was in fact the son of the founder of that brand, Adam Teacher. One of the last distillers to use coal to fire their stills, this barrel was distilled prior to their transition to gas in 2001. It boasts the ability to produce nearly 5.5 million liters of pure alcohol a year with 8 working stills. Nearly all of that is made with h...

The lovely Auchroisk distillery has been a favorite of blenders and independent bottlers alike since its founding in 1972. It offers consistently delicious creamy Speyside character, a wonderful base malt to build a blend around. The distillery in Mulben has also been used for vatting of the J&B Highland malts before blending at the main J&B facility to the south. We've had many wonderful Auchroisk over the years and we've managed to keep the prices unreasonably low on these lovely casks. This one was filled into an old sherry butt in 2010 and bottled at...

It seems like forever since we've had 20+ year old blue chip distilleries on the docket for a reasonable price. It's getting harder and harder to secure these casks, and this one is a veritable coup. Distilled in June of 2000 and bottled in October of 2022, this 22 year old beauty is finally on our shores. Aged in a refill Hogshead, this is all about the spirit and time. Elegant, leathery, briny, sweet barley, and chock full of that lovely peat that only really comes with long years in cask. Bottled without chill filtration or coloring at its natural cas...

This special onetime pricing on Speyburn's Arranta should not be missed. Toffee, vanilla, and spice dominate the profile of this USA exclusive bottling that comes from first fill ex-Bourbon casks and is bottled at 46% ABV. The classic Speyside distillery still uses wormtubs in its production and this leads to a full and rich spirit, perfectly matched to 1st first Bourbon casks.

We dreamed for years of creating a delicious, interesting expression of blended Scotch whisky that we could feature under our Faultline label at a value driven price. We were close many times, but either the quality of the whisky or the cost of the barrels proved prohibitive. We didn't want to make a $25 bottle of whisky just for the sake of it. After working on and off with our bottler for over a year-long blending process, we hammered out a profile we were finally happy with. Big smoke, Ardbeg-like peat flavors, and a kiss of sweet grain was our goal, ...

The unprecedented Tres Vieux Brut de Fut is one of the most memorable and unique offerings from any producer in Cognac. Bouju is well known for speaking out in the region against the use of additives and has carved out a niche as one of the few Grand Champagne producers willing to offer unfiltered, uncut, full-strength Cognac. This brandy is the house's top offering and represents some of the oldest stocks with a minimum age of 40 years. The color is dark like coffee and when we inquired about that insanely dark color, Bouju explained that long term agin...

The rare Blanton's Gold has become beloved by connoisseurs and collectors world wide. The ultimate single barrel bourbon and founder of the category, Blanton's has become one of the most asked for and hardest to obtain bourbons on the market today. We've found some limited stocks of European-bound product that would otherwise have not been available. The famous "Gold" Blanton's is so named for its unique golden horse and golden writing. Bottled at a perfect 103 proof, the Blanton's Gold ups the complexity considerably from the standard release without th...

The beauty of the Thompson Brothers is that they're willing to take risks. This offering is indeed a risky proposition for a bottler, the very reason the big guys were willing to let it go. On paper it reads like a very expensive blended scotch. But why add an age statement, when a 12-year-old Johnnie Walker is a fraction of the price? The age statement tells the entire story here and our friends at Dornoch care little for artificial labels and quality statements, all they care about is getting damn good whisky into your glass for an incredible price. So...

*One time pricing - when this deal is gone, it's gone forever* Named in honour of the world-class Salmon fishing found on the superbly clean waters of the River Spey, Bradan Orach, Gaelic for ‘Golden Salmon’ is a gloriously bright single malt scotch whisky that is a delightfully classic whisky. Matured in American White Oak ex-bourbon casks that lend a subtle vanilla flavour to the dram. It has rich malt tones and great body and weight under a layer of sweet fruit. Normally priced around $30, this is a steal on the old school packaging. When they moderni...

This is the Thompson Brothers foray into the world of blending. It's also proof that they've got some of the absolute best palates in the business. They seem to be getting access to stocks were others struggle and this little vatting of over 8 year old malts is one of the most intriguing and delicious malts on our shelves at any price point. SRV5 refers to Station Road Vat 5, the wooden vessel where this whisky is mingled before bottling. The Dornoch boys bottle in very small batches and the source material is of the highest quality. A family-owned estate since 1961, Séailles is now run by Jean Labérenne, who lead the domaine to Ecocert organic certification in 1997, swearing off all chemical fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides, and synthetic chemical products. Released in July of 2014 to celebrate OPs maritime hertiage and entry in the 2013-14 Clipper Round The World Yacht Race. Old Pulteney made just 2,700 cases of this limited edition bottling. Weridly a some cases resurfaced in a deep warehouse dive at the importer. Old Pulteney has long been a favorite of the store and this bottling is excellent, so we jumped at the chance to bring it back onto our shelf (and at 50% off of the original price in 2014 to boot!) The gorgeous Benriach distillery is one of Speyside's most unique. The distillery, built in 1898, was promptly purchased and shuttered by nearby Longmorn Distillers and remained silent for many decades. It was purchased in 1965 by the Glenlivet Co. and refurbished before being sold to Seagram's in the late '70s. It was always a hub of experimentation and remains filled with crazy expressions and unusual cask fills, with both peated and floor malted versions. It's rather rare to see independently bottled Benriach, but it seems Alistair Hart's relationship...

The most famous of all Japanese whiskies turns 100 this year. The House of Suntory has been committed to producing the highest quality malt whisky for a century and their flagship 12-year-old is one of the world's most sought-after and collectible single malts. It's comprised of a blend of whiskies aged in a multitude of barrel types. From ex-sherry, ex-bourbon to refill hogsheads and first fill mizunara with a minimum age of 12 years old, the recipe does indeed include some much older malts, which create a complexity and refinement well beyond its state...

A rare independently bottled Aberlour, made that much more unusual by its maturation in a first fill sherry butt. The Aberlour distillery sits on the edge of its namesake, a gorgeous little hamlet right at the center of the Speyside region. The distillery seems tiny from the outside, but the malt here packs a punch. Founded in 1879 by James Fleming, it's become a pillar of the Chivas family in the last two decades since the French spirits giant Pernod Ricard purchased the distillery. Outfitted with 4 stills in the early 70s, it can produce nearly 4 milli...

It's comical to think Laphroaig is charging $350 for their official bottling single casks that are 7 years old! We obvioulsy passed on that because we are still finding exceptional gems like this. Here we have a 10 year old for just $90! All that big bombastic peat and iodine in a classic ex-Bourbon cask giving the balaced vanilla and creamy malt center stage. At 53.5% ABV and without coloring or chill filtration, this is surely one of the best ways to add more of Islay's Southern shore to your life.

This exceptional single cask was sold to this bottler as the "Williamson" blended malt and therefore cannot include the source on the label. But we have no problem telling you that this excellent whisky was distilled on the famous little stills located just outside the little seaside town of Port Ellen. Adorned in the throwback label, the Thompson Brothers, are clearly giving the old nudge nudge wink wink to the famous old bottling from nearly a century ago, with block letters and cursive writing. Filled into a used sherry butt in 2010, this excellent ca...

This perfect cask of Caol Ila from the excellent Glasgow blender and bottler Hart Brothers is the first Islay cask that they've yet to furnish K&L exclusively. Filled into a high-quality hogshead, this famously ocean-y peater is in full form here. Full bodied and intense, the weighty mouth feel is contrasted by the tangy seaside character. We rarely come across young Caol Ila that's not excellent, but occasionally we are happy to encounter some that are truly superlative. This is obviously in the latter category.

This little find comes from an undisclosed distillery on the Isle of Islay. While the bottler is prohibited from confirming the source, the whisky world seems to be pretty confident that this single malt came from the special distillery on the south side of the island. This distillery, which boasts its own malt floors, seven stills and one of the most flavorful spirits in the business is widely considered the King of Islay. The wild ocean character and deep peaty richness is the key here. Add an unbeatable price, 50% ABV, and we've got your newly minted ...

Disco #9 is here and K&L has exclusive first rights to sell it in California. Aptly named, the series has always been about unique combinations of whiskies that are impeccably blended to maximize deliciousness. They often include rare ingredients in unusual combinations, but they always taste amazing. The 9th edition features a backbone built on a mysterious 8 year old Georgia produced Bourbon with a unique four-grain mashbill: corn 80%, wheat 10% / rye 5% / malted barley 5%. This makes up 35% of the blend. The next largest component is 12 year old KY Bo...

The vineyards of Ragnaud-Sabourin stretch far over the hills in Grande Champagne, 33 hectares of Ugni Blanc, with a bit of Folle Blanche, as far as the eye can see. This estate is known throughout France for having the goods, and we couldn't have been more impressed after visiting the property. Today the estate is run by Annie Sabourin, who is the daughter of the late Marcel Ragnaud, and she makes sure every drop lives up to the property's reputation. When our first batch of Four Pillars Faultline Gin ran out, we were all devastated. Initially conceived as a one-off project, the FP Faultline turned out to be one of our most popular gins ever, both among staff and our customers. After months of trying to find a substitute, we conceded that the first go-around was just too good and needed to be remade to the exact same specs. The initial batch was put together by David Driscoll, K&L Buyer Emeritus, wanting to build on the clean citrus notes and the creamy texture that are the calling cards of Four Pilla...

94 points Whisky Advocate: "For Nikka From the Barrel, it’s been a long road to Whisky of the Year. This Japanese blend made its U.S. debut in 2018, but its inception dates back more than 30 years. In 1985, Nikka Whisky Distilling Company’s blending team, led by Shigeo Sato, designed this whisky using both malt and grain whiskies produced at Nikka’s Yoichi and Miyagikyo Distilleries. Styles vary tremendously across Armagnac and Domaine Séailles' flavor profile falls firmly in the middle between the two extremes of woody or fruity. The small 2.5 acre plot of Ugni Blanc on clay limestone soils makes for a brandy that has generous fruit, but a mineral backbone that stands up to long aging in French oak. As the brandy crests the 30 year mark it begins to develop distinct secondary sweetness notes as the fruit/wood interplay develops. Lots of maple/molasses/honey tones mark the '89 without sacrificing fruit. The stone fruit flavors jump o...

Chateau de la Grangerie is a property that was built in the 17th century right next to an old monastery. The church and the housing for its servants was actually built in the 11th and 12th centuries and since the Armagnac is aged inside that facility, it might be the only spirit at K&L matured on hallowed grounds. Like many Tenereze producers, Grangerie distills only Ugni Blanc for its brandies. However, the sandy and gravel-rich soils are much more like the terrain found in the Bas-Armagnac. They fill about ten barrels a year, two of which are used for ...

A true gem from the Angel's Envy single barrel program. The brand that brought cask finishing in Bourbon into the mainstream continues to bottle stellar Kentucky Straight Bourbon with that added kick of quality port wine barrels. If there were ever a romantic ideal for French countryside distillation, the Baraillons are it. Out in the middle of nowhere, there's nothing glossed over or touristic about their operation - they are farmers, pure and simple. David and I absolutely fell in love with this father/daughter team even though they hardly said a word to us the entire time we tasted (they let their booze speak for itself).
