It seems like forever since we've had 20+ year old blue chip distilleries on the docket for a reasonable price. It's getting harder and harder to secure these casks, and this one is a veritable coup. Distilled in June of 2000 and bottled in October of 2022, this 22 year old beauty is finally on our shores. Aged in a refill Hogshead, this is all about the spirit and time. Elegant, leathery, briny, sweet barley, and chock full of that lovely peat that only really comes with long years in cask. Bottled without chill filtration or coloring at its natural cas...

There's no amount of Caol Ila that we're not interested in. This wonderful distillery on the northern shore of Islay remains one of the great values for independent bottlers. The gorgeous maritime character and medium peat style is an approachable way into the Islay category, but isn't in the slightest bit too tame for seasoned peat lover. The old distillery was founded in 1846 overlooking the Islay Strait for which its name. Across from the distillery the majestic paps of Jura sit calmly in the distance. Considering the incredible volumes this distiller...

The old distillery just to the north of Port Askaig was founded in 1881. It's become one of the best loved Islay malts, despite its normally gentle character. We've had several lovely casks of naked Bunnah over the last few years, but this one truly stands out. The great northern Islay distiller is renowned for capturing that ocean character without relying on heavy peat smoke. In fact, the distillery makes sure to note that their whisky contain less than 2 ppm of phenol, making it one of two regularly produced unpeated Islay malts, but this little whisk...

It's comical to think Laphroaig is charging $350 for their official bottling single casks that are 7 years old! We obvioulsy passed on that because we are still finding exceptional gems like this. Here we have a 10 year old for just $90! All that big bombastic peat and iodine in a classic ex-Bourbon cask giving the balaced vanilla and creamy malt center stage. At 53.5% ABV and without coloring or chill filtration, this is surely one of the best ways to add more of Islay's Southern shore to your life.

This little find comes from an undisclosed distillery on the Isle of Islay. While the bottler is prohibited from confirming the source, the whisky world seems to be pretty confident that this single malt came from the special distillery on the south side of the island. This distillery, which boasts its own malt floors, seven stills and one of the most flavorful spirits in the business is widely considered the King of Islay. The wild ocean character and deep peaty richness is the key here. Add an unbeatable price, 50% ABV, and we've got your newly minted ...

This exceptional single cask was sold to this bottler as the "Williamson" blended malt and therefore cannot include the source on the label. But we have no problem telling you that this excellent whisky was distilled on the famous little stills located just outside the little seaside town of Port Ellen. Adorned in the throwback label, the Thompson Brothers, are clearly giving the old nudge nudge wink wink to the famous old bottling from nearly a century ago, with block letters and cursive writing. Filled into a used sherry butt in 2010, this excellent ca...

This perfect cask of Caol Ila from the excellent Glasgow blender and bottler Hart Brothers is the first Islay cask that they've yet to furnish K&L exclusively. Filled into a high-quality hogshead, this famously ocean-y peater is in full form here. Full bodied and intense, the weighty mouth feel is contrasted by the tangy seaside character. We rarely come across young Caol Ila that's not excellent, but occasionally we are happy to encounter some that are truly superlative. This is obviously in the latter category.

Islay's easiest anagram. This beautiful cask was distilled March 9, 2006 and bottled April 24, 2023 at 17 years old. It's old school South Shore goodness from one of the world's most sought after distilleries. Bottled at a natural cask strength of 57.2% ABV without color or chill filtration. This cask stands out for its harmony and balance, aged in an ex-bourbon hogshead it is all about the balance between malt and wood, sea and smoke, aged to perfection.

Ardbeg's Note: ABV 48.2% Color Amber Cask Innovative Cask charring technique Nose Earthy, dusty, and biscuity on the nose, this is a most curious Ardbeg, almost from an alternative universe. The sooty/tarry notes are clear but restrained, and balanced by silky vanilla. Taste Peppery and warming, preceding an explosion of fiery, spicy flavors: Chili chocolate, bittersweet mocha, briar wood, birch tar, black pepper and smoked artichokes. The tarry notes build to a crescendo of rich, smoky flavors, with an incredible, lingering aftertaste of charcoal almon...

Wine Enthusiast: "Although the “Botanist” name might suggest a floral gin, instead the flavor profile veers toward herbs and spices. There’s a subtle, herbal scent, with anise flavors up front, backed by coriander seed and cassia bark on the spicy finish. Made by Bruichladdich Distillery, which is renowned for its Scotch, on a pot still named Ugly Betty. Sold in an attractive, square-shouldered, gift-worthy bottle. (KN)" (04/2012) K&L Notes: What happens when you take one of the greatest single malt distillers of all time, put him in a room with an old...

92 points Whisky Advocate: "This expression offers an uncompromising note of brine-laden peat and iodine, with charcoal and sweeter fruit notes also present. The palate is equally out there, with old-fashioned fabric Band-Aids, bladderwrack seaweed, black pepper, smoldering peat, vanilla, caramel, and sweet oak. The finish is as big as everything else, with barbecue, iodine, and asphalt. Still a classic! (GS, Fall 2018)" 92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Look for a distinctly peaty aroma, with hints of smoked fish, bacon and mesquite. The palate shows peat sm...

92 points Whisky Advocate: "Classic ‘southern shores’ Islay from the onset: salty and medicinal on the nose, with smoked haddock, citrus fruits, and milk chocolate. The palate yields full-on hot peat, pipe tobacco, black coffee, licorice, and more chocolate. The finish is long and malty, with sweet smoke. Non-chill filtered. (GS, Fall 2018)" K&L Notes: Still holding our super low price on this classic Islay whisky, which was named "World Whisky of the Year" by Jim Murray in his 2008 edition of the "Whisky Bible." Jim McEwan: "Colour - Primrose Yellow. Aromas - The Islay Maritime overture in harmony with the warm peat smoke drift leaves you in no doubt where this spirit was born and raised! The sweetness from the toasted barley works well with the mellowness of oak with just a hint of spice from the bourbon residue. A harmonious bouquet seeded with the sea air & the character of the men who made it in the traditional way. Palate - Soft fruits created by the yeast during distillation over a decade ago emerge and together with malt extract and the sweetness of the...

Ardbeg's Notes: ABV: 46% Color: Amber Cask: Sweet Sauternes Wine casks and ex-Bourbon casks. Nose: Very distinctively oily, with touches of extra virgin olive oil, sweet briar wood, aromatic herbs (coriander & sage) and a suggestion of smoked lemon peel. Jim McEwan: "Cask Type - First Fill Bourbon Barrel - ABV 59.0%. Colour - Harvest Gold. Body - Smooth Mellow and in prime condition. Aromas - Classic Islay without the smoke which allows the barley/oak notes to shine and highlights that brilliant Atlantic freshness. Hints of ripe Guava & melon work in harmony with the crispness of the malt & the oak which brings that mellow soft sweetness. Jim McEwan: "Aromas - It’s an irresistible mellow mature aroma. The sweet fruity aromatics from the Sauternes-soaked staves has created a halo that embraces the sweetness of malted barley. Add the natural aromatics of an Island in the Atlantic Ocean where the casks lay sleeping for 15 years at the water’s edge. The crispness of the toasted barley in harmony with the oak work beautifully ensuring that the wine influence is not dominating the natural aromas allowing the Islay character to shine through beautifully. Palate - Absolutely amazing! The sweetnes...

This spirit is wonderful & rare, seldom found as most bottling are from many casks married together. The Sherry & smoke character from 18 years of maturing on the Island of Drams is incredible. From the distillery: "Dramfool’s 57th and its sister 58th release are a classic pairing of from Islay. While its sister release, in first fill bourbon, may be the classic of Islay, the 58th release fully matured in a first fill Rivesaltes Barrique must be a considered the modern classic style. Since the 2001 re-opening, high quality wine casks proved the corner stone of the new period of Bruichladdich and helped build its army of fans internationally. It is with great excitement we release this fine example of the ‘new classic of Islay’. Distilled in 20...

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Look for a straw hue and unmistakably peaty, smoky scent. On the palate, fruity sweetness leads at first, quickly morphing into a billow of pungent peat smoke. Quite drying, and finishes fiery. Water tamps down the alcohol heat and brings more orchard fruit forward. The palate is complex and rich, offering orange segments sprinkled with sea salt, dark chocolate, malt, and ever-present sweet peat. Nicely balanced. Lengthy in the finish, with smoky caramel. Whisky Advocate: "A new, and welcome, permanent member of the core Kilchoman range, this comes from a mix of sherry finished and sherry matured whisky. The nose kicks off with a lovely cigar ash note—a cigar club toward the end of the evening—and while there are some dried fruits from the sherry, Kilchoman’s gentle, light character gives energy and lemony lift—shellfish, grass, and herbs. Lovely balance. Rounded, softly fruity, and highly approachable. (DB)" (07/2019) K&L Notes: 97 points Ultimate Spirits Challenge: The newest full-time release from Ki...

93 points Whisky Advocate: "Ardbeg doles out occasional limited releases for their avid fans, but for nearly a decade the core range consisted of just three whiskies: 10 year old, Uigeadail, and Corryvreckan. The addition of An Oa, matured in a combination of virgin oak, Pedro Ximénez sherry, and bourbon barrels, and married in a French oak ‘gathering vat’ prior to bottling, marks a reason to celebrate. An Oa is a more approachable Ardbeg. It lacks some of the typical oiliness, but flavor and complexity abound with hot peat, black tea, and peppery cloves...
