The most famous of all Japanese whiskies turns 100 this year. The House of Suntory has been committed to producing the highest quality malt whisky for a century and their flagship 12-year-old is one of the world's most sought-after and collectible single malts. It's comprised of a blend of whiskies aged in a multitude of barrel types. From ex-sherry, ex-bourbon to refill hogsheads and first fill mizunara with a minimum age of 12 years old, the recipe does indeed include some much older malts, which create a complexity and refinement well beyond its state...

91 points Wine Enthusiast: "The newest blended whisky offering from Hibiki is burnished gold in the glass and has a bold aroma that mixes vanilla, fresh pear and a hint of smoke. The smokiness comes forward at the first sip, wrapping around a core of oak and vanilla custard and finishing long, with a mouthwatering bitter chocolate note. *Wine Enthusiast Best of 2016* (KN)" (03/2016) 90 points Whisky Advocate: "Poised and complex, with typically lifted fruitiness: strawberry ice cream, pineapple, peach, balanced by delicate oak, bamboo shoot-like delica...

While the Hakushu distillery came a bit later than Yamazaki, The House of Suntory is celebrating its centennial with these limited edition special releases from their two single malt distilleries. Yamazaki and Hakushu both have 100th Anniversary offerings featuring an understated label and supremely delicious 12 year old whiskies from their respective distilleries. The unique Japanese style utilizes a wide array of barrel types, peat levels, and still shapes and sizes to produce many different malts at each distillery. The blend of all of these makes for...

92 points Whisky Advocate: "Sweet, with subtle, crisp, nutty oak, then comes fudge, ripe banana, and peach. The overall effect is like eating vanilla ice cream with toffee fudge and hazelnut sprinkles. The structure is thick and physical, the palate sweet and quite fat, with light hints of raspberry, fruit salad. A jag of acidity freshens the delivery on the finish. With water there’s more toffee, and it becomes slightly more yielding, with less oak. For me the gold standard of grain. (DB, Fall 2015)" 90 points Wine Enthusiast: "The name of this whisky ...

Nikka is continuing to expand its Coffey Still lineup with the addition of a new gin and vodka to complement the malt- and grain-based whiskies distilled on the multi-story apparatus located in the Miyagikyo distillery. Using Japanese citrus varieties like yuzu, kabosu, amanatsu and shikuwasa, as well as sansho pepper and apples, the gin is a burst of fresh and fruity delights. That bright citric element is then paired with juniper, angelica, coriander and lemon peel to bolster it with a clean and aromatic finish. The result is familiar, yet completely u...

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "The name of this whisky has nothing to do with coffee—rather, it's named for a type of still invented by Aneas Coffey, which is used to make this golden spirit. It offers mild vanilla-pear aromatics and is relatively light and silky on the palate. Look for a light vanilla sweetness at first, which gives way to a rounded dark chocolate note and baking spice finish. Recommended for highballs and other mixed drinks. " (03/2016) Whisky Advocate: "Now a hugely welcome part of the core range, this whisky—made in Coffey stills at t...

90 points Whisky Advocate: "Boosting the ABV gives this more versatility for whisky-based cocktails, but neat, there are aromas of honey, barley, exotic woods, ripening pear, box-fresh sneakers, citrus, and fruity acids, with the spices turned down low. A convoluted profile winds through vanilla, sugar cubes, and honey fudge, followed by pear, apricot, and a gentle crescendo of spice, before hitting a plateau of honey, breakfast cereal, nougat, and white chocolate to finish. *Best Value* (JM, Fall 2020)" K&L Notes: This epic 1800ml bottle size is a firs...

Whisky Advocate: "One for no age statement naysayers. An eloquent expression of sweet osmanthus, baked lemon, yuzu, violin resin, rich malts, and bonfire aromas on a favorite woolen jumper. It glides across the tongue with sweet barley sugar, but attests to greater depths; grapefruit, spicy ginger, and mandarin developing milk chocolate-coated, candied lemon flavors. A firm finish: green cardamom spices slowly releasing their grip on the front of the palate, leaving clingy vanilla. Unbound by an age statement, it's a beautiful offering. (JM, Winter-2016)...

The 135º meridian east runs through Akashi City in the Hyogo prefecture, home of our Kaikyo Distillery. Inspired by the Taisho period, the Hyogo Gin alludes to a time when East and Western culture were melding within Japan. This concepts exemplifies the style and even the ingredients, which are designed to enhance and complement each other. Traditional London Dry Gin botanicals mingle with Japanese botanicals, topped with a splash of sake spirit. The spicy sansho pepper and floral, citrusy notes of yuzu balance perfectly the sweet earthiness of Angelica ...

90 points Whisky Advocate: "A unifying blend of 10 year old Chichibu, with select stocks of American, Canadian, Irish, and scotch whiskies matured in Japan, produces a nose of toffee apple, firm caramel, milk chocolate, ground hazelnut, roasted fennel seed, chopped cilantro stalks, green banana, and struck match. Cereal-led palate with Golden Grahams, light fruits of apricot, peach, and melon, base notes of pepper, moving through butterscotch, toffee, maple syrup, and crème caramel. Wine & Spirits: "While it may seem that our world is suddenly awash in Japanese single malts, the fact is that we’re already in a shortage. Last year, as demand continued to build for its limited stocks, Suntory took the age statement off its Hibiki, suggesting less of the precious older stocks were being used. This year, they’ve introduced Toki, a welcome addition to the portfolio. Whereas Hibiki is a burnished, complex sipper, Suntory’s latest release, Toki, is a light, bright, perky spirit with a surprising punch of flavor—apple, citrus and honey note...

The Hakuto Gin from Matsui, the Kurayoshi Distillery, is named for the Tottori Prefecture's legend of the white rabbit. The gin itself relies on local specialties for many of the botanicals — Sakura (cherry blossom), yuzu citrus, sansho pepper, green tea, and Nashi Pear, in addition to classic gin botanicals.

Whisky Advocate: "A world blend combining malt and grain whiskies from Ireland, Scotland, Japan, Canada, and the U.S., this is a busy, multilayered whisky. The nose has grilled orange, floral notes, fruity hard candy, rose water, fresh-baked bread, an almost yeasty note, wood spice, pastry, and firework smoke. Juicy orange flavors, with smoke, chocolate, cinnamon, peppercorn, and maltiness, then hazelnut, caramel, and ground almond to finish. Suntory is the biggest name in Japanese whiskey, playing a pivotal, some might say definitive, role in establishing the category as a global market phenomenon. Indeed, many of the most sought-after, benchmark labels are distilled and bottled under the Suntory banner. So, it was only a matter of time before they threw their hat into the clear spirits game. Enter Haku, an ultra-premium vodka distilled from the finest white rice. From the producer: "HAKU Vodka, brought to life by the House of Suntory, is a Japanese premium craft vodka made from 100 percent ...

Whisky Advocate: "Prunes, barbecue seasonings, and hoisin sauce, sweetened by rich caramel; soak up the heady aromatics. Gloopy texture on the palate explodes into life with burnt orange, dried mango, and banoffee pie, spiraling down to black licorice, burnt oak, and Brazil nut. The name acknowledges Kiichiro Iwai’s role in ushering in whisky making for Hombo Shuzo in the 1960s, drawing on the notes diligently recorded by Masataka Taketsuru in Scotland. (JM, Fall 2017)" K&L Notes: The Mars distillery is very well regarded in Japan despite the low price ...

90 points Whisky Advocate: "Blended from imported whiskies along with Chichibu, the component whiskies in blue label are at least 10 years old, but often much older. The aromas tease with barley sugar, smoked venison, aromatic pan-roasted spices, peppercorn, and smoked paprika. Pepper and root ginger pummel sweet orange flavors of sherbet and Creamsicle. The citrus sweetness sees off the hefty spices, leaving the mouth awash with creamy orange peel notes and tropical fruits. (JM, Winter 2020)"

The Mars distillery is very well regarded in Japan and is easily considered the "super third" after the famous Suntory and Nikka distilleries. They don't focus exclusively on traditional single malt and are prone to experiment. They only produce whisky in the winter months so production is very small. This one is produced on the traditional pot stills at Shinshu Mars which was hand crafted in the 1950s. It is an unusual blend of 70% corn 30% non peated malt. The fat, wide stills produce a very weighty and complex spirit. Mars always delivers a rich textu...
