There's no amount of Caol Ila that we're not interested in. This wonderful distillery on the northern shore of Islay remains one of the great values for independent bottlers. The gorgeous maritime character and medium peat style is an approachable way into the Islay category, but isn't in the slightest bit too tame for seasoned peat lover. The old distillery was founded in 1846 overlooking the Islay Strait for which its name. Across from the distillery the majestic paps of Jura sit calmly in the distance. Considering the incredible volumes this distiller...

Produced from a small estate plot, this Armagnac is aged in 400L barrels and was distilled entirely in 1979. From the importer: "Domaine Séailles is one of the pioneers of organic viticulture in the Côtes de Gascogne region of Southwest France. A family-owned estate since 1961, Séailles is now run by Jean Labérenne, who lead the domaine to Ecocert organic certification in 1997, swearing off all chemical fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides, and synthetic chemical products. It's comical to think Laphroaig is charging $350 for their official bottling single casks that are 7 years old! We obvioulsy passed on that because we are still finding exceptional gems like this. Here we have a 10 year old for just $90! All that big bombastic peat and iodine in a classic ex-Bourbon cask giving the balaced vanilla and creamy malt center stage. At 53.5% ABV and without coloring or chill filtration, this is surely one of the best ways to add more of Islay's Southern shore to your life.

91 points Wine Enthusiast: "The newest blended whisky offering from Hibiki is burnished gold in the glass and has a bold aroma that mixes vanilla, fresh pear and a hint of smoke. The smokiness comes forward at the first sip, wrapping around a core of oak and vanilla custard and finishing long, with a mouthwatering bitter chocolate note. *Wine Enthusiast Best of 2016* (KN)" (03/2016) 90 points Whisky Advocate: "Poised and complex, with typically lifted fruitiness: strawberry ice cream, pineapple, peach, balanced by delicate oak, bamboo shoot-like delica...

Disco #9 is here and K&L has exclusive first rights to sell it in California. Aptly named, the series has always been about unique combinations of whiskies that are impeccably blended to maximize deliciousness. They often include rare ingredients in unusual combinations, but they always taste amazing. The 9th edition features a backbone built on a mysterious 8 year old Georgia produced Bourbon with a unique four-grain mashbill: corn 80%, wheat 10% / rye 5% / malted barley 5%. This makes up 35% of the blend. The next largest component is 12 year old KY Bo...

While there seems to be no shortage of Orkney malt on the market, there is a serious dearth of it at screaming good prices. For just 80 bucks this famous Ornkey distillery at cask strength and a respectable 14 years is a heck of a deal. Aged in a refill hogshead this shows off that beautiful heathery peat that the distillery is famous for. Bottled at its natural cask strength of 51.7% and without coloring or chill filtration.

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Mild, sweet mango and coconut aromas lead into a mouthwateringly tart, fruity palate. Vanilla and coconut take over into the smooth, elegant finish, exiting with a sprinkle of sweet cinnamon. (KN)" (05/2020) K&L Notes: The magnificent Casa Dragones has been blowing it up in the high-end tequila market. They've finally made their exquisite lowland tequila available to the masses. This surprisingly approachable blanco has all the finesse and structure of the Joven, but without the sweet vanilla and spice oak. This shows tons o...

The wonderful Daniel Bouju has become renowned to our customers for his light and ultra fresh "Fine Saveur" offering. But what makes Bouju famous in Europe and around the world are actually his ultra old, unfiltered, cask-strength offerings. The Royal Brut de Fut is one of the most sought-after and well regarded high proof Cognacs made today, but it's been years since we've seen it in California. Nothing is added nor taken away from this high proof blend with a minimum of 15 years of age. It's dark, dry, powerful stuff, but not without a nuanced elegance...

A true gem from the Angel's Envy single barrel program. The brand that brought cask finishing in Bourbon into the mainstream continues to bottle stellar Kentucky Straight Bourbon with that added kick of quality port wine barrels. For years the only high proof offering from the brand was the meager handful of cask strength bottles we received each year which sell for hundreds of dollars and were virtually unobtainable. Now we can lock in a full barrel at 55% ABV (the same proof as the highly sought after Russell's Single Barrels) and just a couple of poin...

*Please note there has been a delay - updated ETA is mid-December* The highly anticipated follow up release from El Gran Legado De Vida's original Blanco Tequila. The Still Strength is finally here. The Tequila is made at the Cascahuin distillery (NOM 1123) has been generating quite the buzz. It is certified additive-free, and made using very ripe agaves grown in Michoacán. The agaves are cooked via steam injection in Cascahuin's traditional stone ovens for 3 days, then given an extra day to cool down before being crushed on the distillery's roller mill....

We've expanded our selection from one of our favorite Armagnac producers: Domaine de Baraillon. After the success of last year's 1985 vintage brandy, we wanted to introduce you to their younger Folle Blanche selections. This 25 year old Armagnac is distilled from 100% Folle Blanche and exhibits that same unctuous, rich, caramel-laden profile but with more spice and a dusty finish. It's a big time crowd-pleaser of an Armagnac, the kind of thing that will taste good to your great uncle Larry, but still scratch that spirits geek itch in the back of your thr...

95 points Wine Enthusiast: "This limited-edition apple brandy offers big, rounded stone fruit and fresh apple integrated with palate-coating vanilla, almond and honey, finishing long with zingy ginger, cinnamon and clove. Overall, a good balance of fruit and oak, suited for sipping or mixing. Aged in French ex-Chardonnay barrels, the producer bills this as the 'longest-aged domestic apple brandy available anywhere.'" (10/2017) K&L Notes: A stunning find, this confusingly named brandy is actually a 21-year-old apple brandy distilled from 100% California...

Styles vary tremendously across Armagnac and Domaine Séailles' flavor profile falls firmly in the middle between the two extremes of woody or fruity. The small 2.5 acre plot of Ugni Blanc on clay limestone soils makes for a brandy that has generous fruit, but a mineral backbone that stands up to long aging in French oak. As the brandy crests the 30 year mark it begins to develop distinct secondary sweetness notes as the fruit/wood interplay develops. Lots of maple/molasses/honey tones mark the '89 without sacrificing fruit. The stone fruit flavors jump o...

Once one of the most sought-after names in Kentucky bourbon, Fortuna is a well-regarded brand making a comeback. Founded by Phil Hollenbach in the 1870s and distilled at the famous Glencoe Distillery, Fortuna has been reimagined by the Rare Character team: Pablo Moix, Andy Shapira and Pete Nevenglosky. The goal of the brand has remained the same for more than a century: to share "the taste of good fortune." Hollenbach was a legendary gentleman. After emigrating from Germany in 1869, he ran a blender and bottler, finding success by the late 1870s. His p...

Benriach is quickly becoming one of the most attractive names in Scotch. They've won some huge awards, particularly for their slightly smoky 12 year old expression designed by the illustrious Rachel Barrie. Rachel is extremely adept at developing products that offer nuance and complexity, while not compromising on flavor. What we don't see much out of most distilleries these days are LOUD whiskies - ones that step up and shout at you. And while we don't always want to be screamed at, it's impossible to deny the thrilling feeling of getting packed into a ...

The Firkin Whisky Company is offering some of the most exceptional casks in all of Scotland. Founded by Mike and Deborah Collings, the magic they impart is in the careful build and preparation of their finishing casks. The casks are custom built and prepared by Firkin, and are a unique combination of ex-bourbon barrel and charred French oak staves. They are built into "zebra" casks of alternating stave types, then the cask is seasoned with a custom sherry blend made specifically for the whisky that will be going into the cask. Whisky Advocate: "After six ‘Work in Progress’ releases, Kilkerran from Glengyle Distillery has finally come of age with this core expression. It comprises 70% whisky from first-fill bourbon casks and 30% from sherry casks. Floral on the nose, with honey and a hint of brine, then peaty fruit notes develop. The palate is confident and oily, slightly earthy, with tinned peaches, black pepper, cinnamon, smoke, and a suggestion of medicine chests. The finish is relatively long, with pepper, licorice, and drying oak. (GS, Winter 2016)" K&L Notes: When the do...

Pinhook has finally opted to release true single barrels. Incredibly, they're out of the Vertical Series set of barrels which currently clocks in at 8 years old. Distilled at MGP and aged at Castle and Key, these barrels are some of the finest MGP Bourbons on the market today. We began tasting through a liineup, but stopped cold on this barrel. It was an obvious choice. The mouthfeel, richness, intensity, and outright sweetness was head and shoulders above the rest. A cursory taste of our remaining options confirmed the no brainer. Barrel 3156 was it. Bo...

We've been carrying the Baraillon Armagnacs for three years now and it's been a match made in heaven for K&L, the Claverie family, and our customers—we're their biggest account and their biggest fans. There's something special about walking into the tasting room at Baraillon, which is really just a little hut next to their home with plastic furniture and humble offerings (like fresh foie gras straight from the farm next door). Mr. Baraillon will come in from feeding the pigs wearing rubber boots, while his daughter Laurence stands by quietly, yet does mo...

26 barrels make up this specatcular Bottled-In-Bond Rye from Redwood Empire. Produced grain to glass in Sonoma County this release is a major milestone for the distillery that is taking the whiskey world by storm. 87% rye, 7% malted barley, and 6% wheat. Similarly to the Grizzly Beast BIB Bourbon - the final mashbill is actually the result of blending multiple mashbills together for added depth and complexity. 95 points Vinous: "Age makes all the difference in Grande Champagne, and at 20 years old, this Cognac has begun to show its elegance and depth. Pronounced aromas of dried rose, peach jam, marmalade, toasted nuts and the beginning of rancio glide softly on to a palate of baked, spiced pear, warm pastry, and a savory note on the finish. My favorite of the Dudognon collection. (JW)" (09/2019) 94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Look for a burnished gold hue and mild floral aromas. The palate is relatively dry, alternating cigar wrapper and espresso with chamomile...

Whisky Advocate: "This expression was distilled in 2003 and after undergoing a period of finishing in amoroso sherry casks it was bottled in 2014. Fleeting green apples on the nose, before sweetening with figs, sultanas, red berries, and chili. Peat smoke finally makes its presence felt. Full-bodied on the palate, with spicy smoke, dark chocolate, peaches, and Jaffa orange; the additional fruitiness courtesy of the amoroso cask influence. Long and softly smoky in the finish, with ginger and lingering fruit notes. (Summer 2015)" K&L Notes: Like all of t...

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "The name of this whisky has nothing to do with coffee—rather, it's named for a type of still invented by Aneas Coffey, which is used to make this golden spirit. It offers mild vanilla-pear aromatics and is relatively light and silky on the palate. Look for a light vanilla sweetness at first, which gives way to a rounded dark chocolate note and baking spice finish. Recommended for highballs and other mixed drinks. 94 points Wine Enthusiast: "This elegant single malt from Nikka bears a dark, vibrant gold color, with smoke and caramel aromas. On the palate, look for well-balanced notes of citrus peel, cedar and oak, and a gentle waft of smoke. An astringent sensation on the finish sets the mouth watering, leading to a full-bodied, almost oily texture. Recommended for sipping neat. (KN)" (02/2013) 92 points Whisky Advocate: "Yoichi age statements are gone for now, but if the whisky stays this good, I can live with that. Black earthy peat, smoldering fires, a turned...

Barrell has always been a premium brand with accordingly premium prices. We're entering a new era where their top tier quality single barrels are getting older and older but their prices haven't necessarily gone up. Now those prices look like a bargain compared to many others on the market. Take this 9 year old Bourbon from MGP. While this cask has a bit of an unusual mashbill at 99% corn, 1% malted barley, it is proper Bourbon. Not overproof distillation and used barrels like so many bigger age statement MGP products on the market, but good old fashione...

Casa Tequileña is owned and operated by Enrique Fonesca, known as El Arquitecto, a fifth-generation grower and master distiller who holds one of the largest plots of agave in the industry. This añejo is made to showcase oak without overshadowing the agave. The nose is amazing! It's subdued and begs to be coaxed, but incredible when it finally arrives with nutty aromas and toasted vanilla, neither too rich nor oaky. Warm baking spices follow on the palate, which is incredibly lean for an añejo! Black pepper and fruit show on the finish, along with more ro...

Produced from grain to glass by Redwood Empire in Sonoma County, this release is a major milestone in Redwood Empire's rising stardom. The mashbill is particularly unique; it's listed as 69% corn, 22% rye, 5% malted barley, and 4% wheat but in reality it's a blend of different mashbills, most with a high corn content around 70% but also including high rye and wheat mashbills where the corn content dipped down towards 51%. Long 7 day ferments add to the complexity of the spirit. It was distilled in Spring 2016 and bottled in the summer of 2021. The final...

The story of Monkey 47 gin is romantic: in 1951, a British man named Montgomery Collins moved to Germany's Black Forest and opened a guesthouse named "Zum wilden Affen"--the wild monkey. While he was an enthusiastic gin drinker, Collins' talent for creating the spirit was lost to history until renovation work at the country guesthouse led to the discovery of a weighty old wooden box containing a bottle and a letter. The dusty bottle had been labeled and decorated by hand, showing a sketch of a monkey and the words "Max the Monkey--Schwarzwald Dry Gin." T...
