92 points Wine Advocate: "...This is a rich, full-bodied, concentrated Margaux that only suffers in comparison with the great vintages produced under the Mentzelopoulos regime. Some of its rusticity may be due to tannins that were not totally ripe during the harvest. In any event, it remains one of the few great wines from the 1978 vintage. While I initially thought it would be fully mature within two decades of the vintage, it could still benefit from another 3-4 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2020." Wine Spectator: "A firm, chunky style, with explosive red cherry and currant flavors, fairly high alcohol and tannin and solid flavors on the finish." (02/1992) Wine Advocate: "This is a very attractive Leoville-Barton that seems to be developing at a more accelerated pace than I had initially expected. A lovely, rather full, big bouquet of smoky, berryish, ripe fruit is first class. On the palate, the wine shows a good cedary, spicy, deep fruity constitution, moderate tannins, and a long finish. Accolades for Château Gruaud-Larose date back as far as 1742 and despite the property's change of ownership over the centuries has maintained a consistent reputation for classically-styled Cabernet-based reds from St-Julien. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot playing supporting roles.

94 points Wine Advocate: "The 1978 Colheita Tawny Port was bottled in 2015 with 119 grams per liter of residual sugar and a bar top cork (typical for the house). It is very graceful for its age, finishing with a wave of sweetness, fruit and sugar. Emphasizing the caramel more than the molasses, this is irresistibly delicious, but it becomes more complex and puts on weight as it airs and warms. The wine shows off its power and hints of Brandy on the rather tense finish, too. Overall, this is a beauty that becomes more impressive the longer you sit with it...

92 points Wine Advocate: "An excellent 1978 (one of the top wines of the vintage), Pichon-Lalande's offering displays an aromatic profile consisting of roasted herbs, chocolate, cedar, tobacco, and ripe curranty fruit. Medium-bodied, with low acidity, some tannin, and a round, attractive personality... (RP)" (01/1998) 92 points Wine Spectator: "Fully mature, with a slightly juicy feel to the cedar, singed vanilla, blood orange, clove, tobacco, dried currant and cherry fruit flavors. Long, fine-grained tannins let an echo of iron linger. Not fully ripe,...

93 points John Gilman: "I have always liked the 1978 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, as the wine was already starting to drink very nicely at age ten and I have been a frequent visitor to its doorstep over the years. Though this wine has been drinking with lovely generosity and breed for many years already, it shows no signs of slowing down and remains smack dab in the middle of its plateau of maturity, offering up a complex and very classic nose of cherries, a touch of juniper berry, cigar wrapper, a fine signature of soil, summer truffles and a topnote of n...

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1978 Joseph Phelps Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (90VN). Vinous: "Two Joseph Phelps Cabernets from 1970s, both from impeccably stored half bottles are the main event. The 1977 Cabernet Sauvignon is fabulous. How can a nearly 50 year-old wine from half bottle be this fresh and gorgeous? What a revelation. The 1978 Cabernet Sauvignon is quite good as well, but a bit rough around the edges with slightly rustic tannin and a hint of brett. It, too, though has aged remarkably well. (AG)" (10/2014)

Bid on this bottle of 1978 Latour, Pauillac (92WS, 90RP, 90VN). Wine Spectator: "A sleek and racy wine. Ruby-amber color. Aromas of cedar, cigar box, tobacco, mint and mushrooms, with hints of red fruits, follow though to a medium body with fine tannins and a long, silky finish. (JS)" (08/2000)
Starting Bid: $325.00
Bid on this bottle of 1978 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars "Cask 23" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (96RP, 94CG, 92JG). Wine Advocate: "Tasted at “The Wine Society” with Warren Winiarski. At the Cask 23 vertical this was one of the highlights: very “Pauillac” on the nose: cedar, charcoal and tobacco. It has brilliant definition and vigor for such a mature wine. The palate exhibits very structured tannin, perfect acidity and again, a very traditional, Bordeaux like austerity. Blackberry, tobacco and decayed leaves. Very stylish with some sweet cherry and orange peel on the finish. Just has a swaggering, confidence about it, accompanied by a natural feel. One of the greatest Napa Cabernets I have tasted. (NM)" (05/2009)

Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 1978 Margaux, Margaux (93JD, 93RP). Wine Advocate: "The 1978 Château Margaux is a significant wine for two reasons: that it was the first under the Mentzelopoulos family after acquiring the property and also, it was their best wine in many years. Today it is still going strong. Clear in color, it has quite a deep garnet core. The nose is very seductive with black fruit, leather, scorched earth, a hint of lavender all beautifully defined and quintessentially Margaux. The medium-bodied palate has exquisite balance, the acidity nicely judged, still a little masculine and 'solid' compared to the subsequent vintages under Paul Pontallier, yet fresh and vital. Sure, there is a grittiness and a touch of rusticity towards the finish, but all in all, this represents a great 1978 Left Bank and a signpost that the First Growth was back on the right track after a dismal run of vintages during the 1970s. Tasted May 2016. (NM)" (10/2016)

Bid on this bottle of 1978 Blandy's Malmsey Madeira in original wood. Showing barely a hint of its 30-plus years, this vintage Malmsey is a full-bodied, wonderfully rich Madeira with a unique honeyed flavor and a concentrated bouquet. Enjoy with desserts or on its own after a meal. "Deliciously balanced with caramel and herbs and mouth-filling spice. Great depth, complexity and a long, solid finish." (IWC 2003)
