Bid on this bottle of 1973 Ridge "Geyserville" Sonoma County Zinfandel. John Gilman: "The 1973 Ridge Geyserville was pretty ripe by the standards of this era in California, coming in at 14.3 percent alcohol. The 1973 was one hundred percent from this varietal (many Geyservilles are a blend that is predominantly zinfandel, but also includes carignane and other grapes) and offers up a complex and brambly nose of raspberries, coffee, spice cake, hickory smoke and fallen oak leaves. On the palate the wine is full-bodied and complex, but also a bit four-square, with a good core, low acids, little remaining tannin and modest grip on the still pretty long finish. I had friends who were great Ridge aficionados back in the 1980s, whose experience dated back to the very earliest days with this winery, and they always insisted that the Ridge zinfandels that really aged the best were the ones that stayed around the thirteen percent alcohol level!" Teaninich just celebrated 200 years in business, and they've come a long way since their early days as the first legal distillery built in the north Highlands. It was also the first to have electricity and a telephone before the turn of the century, and they've been a leader in innovation ever since. This is a truly one-of-a-kind release from the distillery's glory days, and a treasure for any single malt collector.

Bid on this bottle of 1973 Moet & Chandon "Dom Pérignon" Brut Champagne (93JG, 91VN, 90WS). John Gilman: "The 1973 Dom Pérignon is at a beautiful point in its evolution and is a great pleasure to drink. The deep and mature nose offers up a complex mélange of rye seed, oranges, fresh figs, honeycomb, a gentle touch of walnut, a beautiful base of soil that is both chalky and shows some signs of clay and a very gentle hint of DP’s signature herbal streak. On the palate the wine is fullish, very deep and utterly seamless, with impeccable balance, lovely focus and complexity, very gentle bubbles that frame the wine these days, rather than offer up youthful effervescence and a very long, refined and vibrant finish. I would opt for drinking the ’73 Dom Pérignon up over the next decade in regular-sized formats, while it remains at its apogee of peak drinkability, as there is not anything left in reserve at age thirty-five.
