Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1971 Trotanoy, Pomerol (95JG, 94RP). John Gilman: "It had been a few years since I last drank a bottle of the 1971 Château Trotanoy, and the wine has not lost a step since my last glass. The wine remains placed right smack dab in the middle of its plateau of maturity and offers up a deep, complex and beautifully refined nose of black plums, dark berries, gravelly soil tones, plenty of smokiness, a note of black tea and just a hint of new leather in the upper register. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, complex and very pure, with a lovely core of black fruit, fine soil inflection and grip, melted tannins and a long, vibrant and absolutely à point finish. The fact that Bordeaux vintages like 1962, 1966 and 1971 have been so relatively overlooked in much of the wine journalism of the last forty years underscores just how poorly this region was covered back in the day, despite the general impression that Bordeaux was thorough back in the day! Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1971 Cheval Blanc, St-Émilion (95JG, 94ST, 92VN). John Gilman: "he 1971 Cheval Blanc is simply a beautiful example of the vintage that remains at its absolute apogee of drinkability and offers up glorious complexity on both the nose and palate. The deep, pure and very vibrant bouquet delivers a superb aromatic constellation of cherries, pomegranate, spiced meats, menthol, tobacco, a touch of nutskin, a complex base of soil tones, cedar and a bit of orange peel in the upper register. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, pure and velvety on the attack, with a superb core, outstanding transparency, tangy acids, melted tannins and superb focus and grip on the very, very long and perfectly balanced finish. This is unequivocally one of the wines of the vintage in 1971! (JG) 95+" (07/2017)
