From the Wine Spectator: "A ripe, almost sweet fruitiness is the hallmark of this broadly flavored, smoky-tasting, richly textured wine. Reminds you of an aged Burgundy." (April 1996)

From a legendary vintage in Bordeaux, this fully mature stickie is the color of liquid gold, and as sweet as fresh honey. For several generations, Château Rieussec has been a leading name in Sauternes wines. As early as 1868, Charles Cocks remarked that "Beyond any of the others, Rieussec produces wines that are very similar to Yquem wines."

100 points Wine Advocate: "An estate only needs to produce a handful of wines such as the 1961 Petrus to garner an international following. Not surprisingly, the 1961 Petrus was pure perfection. This fully mature wine possesses a port-like richness (reminiscent of the 1947 Petrus and 1947 Cheval Blanc). The color revealed considerable amber and garnet, but the wine is crammed with viscous, thick, over-ripe black-cherry, mocha-tinged fruit flavors. Extremely full-bodied, with huge amounts of glycerin and alcohol, this unctuously-textured, thick wine m...

93 points John Gilman: "DRC’s 1961 Grands Echézeaux is a lovely example of both the vintage and this fine terroir, jumping from the glass in a classic blend of plums, cherries, a bit of cognac-like spice tones, venison, Coca-Cola and a beautiful complex base of soil. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and quite plummy, with superb complexity, melting tannins and excellent focus and grip on the well-balanced, velvety and very refined finish. This is a beautiful bottle of Grands Echézeaux at its peak of maturity, but still with plenty of life ahea...

96 points Wine Advocate: "Tasted 6 Times With Consistent Notes. Fully mature, yet continuing to exhibit gobs of rich, lush, expansive fruit, the 1961 has amber/orange edges, and possesses an exotic bouquet of ripe fruit, vanillin, caramel, mint, and cedar. Fat, rich, and loaded with sweet, highly extracted fruit, this velvety, beautifully crafted wine has a 60-75 second finish. It is a brilliant wine that should hold up nicely for up to a decade. " (10/1994) 92 points Wine Spectator: "A classy Bordeaux from a great year. It smells perfumed and exotic, ...

100 points John Gilman: "The 1961 château-bottling of Palmer remains the greatest vintage of Palmer that I have ever had the great good fortune to taste, and the bottle we had at our October vertical was as profoundly magical as this wine can be when in perfect condition. The haunting bouquet soars from the glass in an utterly profound and surreal mélange of red cherries, mulberries, blood orange, black truffles, violets and roses, tobacco leaf, summer truffles, a touch of nutskin and a profound base of complex soil tones. On the palate the wine is deep,...

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1961 Marchesi di Barolo Barolo. Marchesi di Barolo (which used to be known as Opera Pia Barolo) is one of the region's most historic wineries. Marchesi Falletti was a former proprietor of the estate in the early 1800s and is widely considered to be the creator of what is now known as Barolo. The wines made here were and continue to be Nebbiolos of great breed and complexity.
Starting Bid: $180.00
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1961 Lascombes, Margaux (92JA, 92VN). Vinous: "The 1961 Lascombes is a very fine example of this auspicious vintage. Deep in colour, it has a beguiling bouquet with blackberry, pine and hints of menthol. Pressed iris flowers emerge with time whilst retaining wonderful focus. After 20 minutes, I notice a distant tang of kelp. The palate is medium-bodied with a saline entry, linear with fine structure, sapid with a fine core of mature black fruit. Maybe there is a touch of dryness creeping in on the finish, but otherwise, this is a very pleasurable 1961 whose large format (double magnum) no doubt extended its longevity. (NM)" (10/2022)
Starting Bid: $400.00
Bid on this bottle of 1961 Haut-Brion, Pessac-Léognan (100RP, 99VN, 98JD, 96WS, 94ST). Wine Advocate: "The dark garnet-colored 1961 Haut-Brion is pure perfection, with gloriously intense aromas of tobacco, cedar, chocolate, minerals, and sweet red and black fruits complemented by smoky wood. This has always been a prodigious effort (it was the debut vintage for Jean Delmas). It is extremely full-bodied, with layers of viscous, sweet fruit. This wine is akin to eating candy. Consistently an astonishing wine! (RP)" (01/1998)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1961 Marchesi di Barolo "Gia Opera Pia" Barolo. Notes on this rare bottling, from importer Frederick Wildman: "The Marchesi di Barolo Estate encompasses approximately 430 acres of vineyards in the Langhe, some of the finest in Piedmont. The cellars are located in the village of Barolo, overlooking the magnificent village landmark, the Renaissance castle of the Marchesi Falletti di Barolo. Vineyards were established here in the early 19th century by the Marchese Carlo Tancredi Falletti di Barolo and his wife, Giulia. The wine from their estate soon became known as 'the wine from Barolo, ' served at important diplomatic and royal functions. The Marchesi had no children and following the death of the couple, the Marchesi di Barolo dynasty was left without an heir. "

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1961 Villadoria Barolo . Having begun as a nursery selling rootstock and cuttings to estates in the Langhe in the late 1800s, Villadoria established itself as a bona fide producer of fine Barolo and Barbaresco in 1959 in the heart of Serralunga d'Alba. This example of the excellent 1961 vintage from the winery's early days is still drinking beautifully, as the growing season endowed the wines with much power and structure to withstand the long haul in the cellar.
Starting Bid: $180.00
Bid on this bottle of 1961 Gaja Barbaresco (100JS, 95VN). James Suckling: "It was truly magical. On the nose and palate I picked up rose petals, strawberries and dried fruits plus lemon peel undertones. It was medium body with super silky tannins and a creamy texture. It reminded me of a perfect Burgundy but with that soulful character of Piedmont. It grew on the palate with a powerful and tannic undertone, but ended refined and mellow. Over and over again it changed in my glass and ended with a honey, plum, cream, and Christmas pudding character." (06/2016)
Current Bid: $335.00
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1961 Cos d'Estournel, St-Estèphe (96VN, 92RP). Vinous: "The 1961 Cos d’Estournel has quite a wide tawny rim to the extent that it implies a wine past its best. However, the bouquet is absolutely heavenly: exquisitely defined, gentle and unfolding with each swirl. There is something almost Burgundian about the aromatics: the purity, the detail and its seductive nature. It is very confit-like with hints of fig and a touch of fennel. There is a complexity here that is utterly beguiling. The palate is very well balanced with fine tannin, perfect acidity, refined and elegant. It is “old school” Saint-Estèphe for sure but what else could it be? Maybe, I could criticize the persistence on the finish: the “tail” is shorter than the finest wines of the vintage, yet it is just a refined, sophisticated 1961 that has clearly aged in consummate style. (NM)" (10/2018)
