The wine displayed a knock-out, caramel/chocolate/coffee-scented nose, medium to full body, sweet, expansive, exotic black cherry and fruitcake-like flavors, and a chewy, fleshy, velvety-textured finish. This wine has been fully mature for some time, but it reveals no signs of fruit loss or color degradation." (02/96)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1961 Franco Fiorina Barolo (92JG). John Gilman: "I am not sure if it is the bottle or the wine, but the 1961 Franco Fiorina Barolo is just a touch more oxidative in style than the bottle of ’61 Barbaresco paired up with it, though this too is drinking very well indeed, just without quite the same vibrancy and sense of being at its apogee. The tertiary bouquet is a mix of dried cherries, orange peel, red curry, onion skin, dried roses and a complex base of soil tones. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very suave and resolved on the attack, with a fine core, lovely intensity of flavor, very good grip and lovely balance on the long and mature finish. This is still very tasty, but my gut instinct tells me that there are even more vibrant bottles out there." (08/2014)

Notes on this rare bottling, from importer Frederick Wildman: "The Marchesi di Barolo Estate encompasses approximately 430 acres of vineyards in the Langhe, some of the finest in Piedmont. The cellars are located in the village of Barolo, overlooking the magnificent village landmark, the Renaissance castle of the Marchesi Falletti di Barolo. Vineyards were established here in the early 19th century by the Marchese Carlo Tancredi Falletti di Barolo and his wife, Giulia. The wine from their estate soon became known as 'the wine from Barolo, ' served at important diplomatic and royal functions."

Wine Advocate: "The dark garnet-colored 1961 Haut-Brion is pure perfection, with gloriously intense aromas of tobacco, cedar, chocolate, minerals, and sweet red and black fruits complemented by smoky wood. This has always been a prodigious effort (it was the debut vintage for Jean Delmas). It is extremely full-bodied, with layers of viscous, sweet fruit. This wine is akin to eating candy.
