1959 d'Yquem, Sauternes (high shoulder, soiled label)
Top Pick!
97 points John Gilman: " The 1959 Yquem is a great vintage and the wine is at its absolute zenith at the present time and shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. The utterly profound bouquet soars from the glass in a blaze of oranges, white cherries, honeyed nuts, crème brulée, new leather, great minerality, barley sugar and gentle topnotes of candied orange peel. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, long and very, very refined, with a rock solid core, impeccable balance, laser-like focus and simply stunning acidity for a nearly fifty year-o...

94 points Wine Advocate: "This is a superlative wine. Such consistent brilliance was not again evident until the succession of super performances that began in 1982."

The Wine Advocate notes: "Most of the vineyard is located on a sandy outcrop on the Cantenac plateau which has a characteristically gravelly topsoil. The remaining one-third not located on the plateau has a higher proportion of clay with a gravelly subsoil. The vineyards cover a total of 35-hectares and are planted with 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Petit Verdot (a conspicuously high proportion for a Bordeaux estate). Interviewed in 1998 for Decanter magazine, Jean-Henri said: 'I'm also keen on using Petit Verdot - when i...

92 points Wine Advocate: "This Berry Brothers bottling of the Las-Cases 1959 has a very respectable bouquet with scents of mulberry, mint, iodine and summer fruits that have been decayed by time. The palate is medium-bodied with a palpable plumpness in the mouth: this can only come from a ripe vintage. Good backbone, quite leathery towards the finish with a saline tang, this has held up well for over 50 years. (NM)" (07/2011) 92 points Vinous: "The 1959 Léoville Las-Cases, which was a Nicolas bottling, was surprisingly limpid in color. This bottle did ...

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1959 Lanessan, Haut-Médoc. When young, the wines of Château Lanessan are typically a deep, intense ruby color, with an elegant nose and fruity, floral aromas. On the palate, the structure is complex and dense, melting away harmoniously to a good, long finish. When they are older, the wines take on a terracotta tint and the nose becomes increasingly complex, with the appearance of plummy, then undergrowth aromas. The flavors are smooth, warm and perfectly harmonious, ending with silky tannins. This almost-60-year-old bottle is drinking perfectly now!
