91 points Wine Enthusiast: "A Mourvèdre that will change the way you think about Mourvèdre. Donkey & Goat gives us a wildly perfumey expression with immediately pronounced aromas of gardenia, white roses and white pepper, along with pops of vibrant red fruits: raspberry, red cherry and cranberry, which carry onto a palate lined with fine-grained tannins and a shivering verve of acidity. This light-bodied wine is perfect at room temp but can also cross into the category of chillable reds, making it a diverse and exciting wine for any occasion, any time of...

Gustavo Sotelo spends his days as a winemaker at Scribe in Sonoma, but he explores his family's history and passions with the Orixe Sotelo label alongside his wife. The Raspon Tempranillo comes from the famed Shake Ridge Ranch in Amador County. The fruit was fermented using native yeast with whole-cluster and carbonic maceration. The wine has INCREDIBLE perfume and purity. Absolutely DELICIOUS!

Winemaker Bertus van Zyl, a native of South Africa, is a rising star in California's Napa Valley. By day he makes wine at a popular Calistoga wine brand, and on the weekend, he and wife Allie nurture their small wine brand called Belong. Sourcing fruit from El Dorado County allows him to show a lithe and bright side of Mourvèdre. This wine reveals deep flavors of red plum, tart cherry, blackberry and earth wrapped in a raw silk texture. It's perfect with meaty cuisine, from biltong to burgers to quesabirria tacos.

91-93 points Vinous: "The 2021 Zinfandel Rorick Vineyard is very dark and intensely mineral. This powerhouse Zinfandel needs time to be at its best, but it has a ton to offer. Black cherry, lavender, cloves, gravel and licorice infuse the potent finish with quite a bit of character. Soils rich in schist yield Zinfandels endowed with tons of nervous energy. (AG)" (01/2023)

90-92 points Vinous: "The 2021 Zinfandel Deaver Ranch is an attractive, mid-weight wine. Floral and savory accents lift a core of bright, red-fleshed fruit, with bright acids and driving tannins that add both presence and character. (AG)" (01/2023) 91 points Wine Advocate: "The 2021 Zinfandel Deaver Ranch has a medium garnet color and some rubbery tones that dissipate to sour cherries, dried leaves and earth on the nose. The light-bodied palate is soft and juicy with pleasantly peachy fruit and a long, spicy finish. It's a delicate, easy-to-drink style...

91 points Vinous: "The 2011 Rompecabezas comes across as a bit floral and fleeting in this vintage. The distinct floral and savory notes are there, but I see less concentration and depth overall relative to the best years. My sense is that the 2011 is a wine to drink sooner rather than later given its medium-bodied structure. (AG)" (11/2013) 91 points Wine Spectator: "Dense, rich and meaty, offering a muscular core of crushed rock, dried dark berry, black licorice and cigar box notes. This is drying on the finish, with tannins giving the flavors tract...

From the second label of Sobon Estates comes Shenandoah Vineyards' full-bodied, full-fledged Amador-style zinfandel. Notes from the producer: "From the 2020 vintage comes this well focused, medium body Amador Zinfandel. This zesty, richly fruited wine is bursting with lush flavors and aromas of black and red fruit that define its appeal. Smooth, elegant, and inviting, this easy drinking offering is perfect with all your outdoor grilling and BBQ. It can be slightly chilled and is great for summer sipping."

Robert Parker writes: "Working from such less prestigious appellations in Amador County as Sierra Foothills and the Shenandoah Valley, Terre Rouge has emerged as one of the stars of the region. Their wines continue to go from strength to strength, and are annual entries as my picks of some of the better Rhone Ranger offerings in the marketplace. Moreover, except for their flagship cuvee, the Syrah Ascent, prices are very fair. For starters, they have fashioned two very good dry whites. These are all impressive efforts that admirably demonstrate the poten...

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Bold, bright flavors and an almost electric texture stretch this wine as taut as a guitar string and make it enormously fun to drink. While many Zinfandels are fat and taste sweet, this one brings wonderful tight acidity and a lively layer of fine tannins to make it virtually vibrate across the tongue. With all that nerve, it will improve if cellared through at least 2020. *Cellar Selection* (JG)" (08/2016) 92 points Connoisseurs Guide: "Here is a solidly structured and deeply filled wine that capably reminds how good Fiddle...

91 points Wine Enthusiast: " Smooth and creamy yet firm enough for good grip, this is a big but well-balanced wine that offers plenty of ripe berries and plums along with hints of black pepper and sage. Moderate tannins seem to build on the palate and add a good bite to the finish. (JG)" (12/2018) 90 points Wine Spectator: "Vibrant and sleekly focused, with a lively core of acidity and tannins, layered with raspberry, stony mineral and white pepper flavors. (TF)" (06/2019) Wine & Spirits: "A spectrum of berries, from red to purple to black, this wine...

About this producer: "Shenandoah Vineyards in Plymouth, CA, was founded in 1977 by Shirley and Leon Sobon. They moved from Los Altos, California, where Leon was a Senior Scientist with the Lockheed Research Lab. Leon's gift for home winemaking led him to leave Lockheed and begin a new career as a Winemaker. The selection of a winery site in the Shenandoah Valley of Amador County was well researched. Leon and Shirley and their six children moved to the old Steiner Ranch, outside Plymouth, CA, planted a vineyard, and converted the old stone garage to the ...

94 points Wine & Spirits: "Bill Easton planted this syrah at his home ranch in Fiddletown in 1999, most of it on its own roots. He farms the steep slopes in what he describes as a “holistic” manner, using organic compost and makes it without any additions. The soils are slate, schist and quartz, and the longer this wine spends with air, the more it seems to deliver on the reductive stress those poor soils generated during fermentation, a character in the tannins that’s easy to interpret as broken rock. Those tannins give varied angles and perspectives on...

Wine Enthusiast: "This Zinfandel offers vivacious fruits that impart notes of fresh raspberry, boysenberry and wild strawberry. All are enveloped in an aura of potpourri and lightly spiced with earthy aromatics like dried forest leaves, toasted wood and a hint of leather. (SB)" (12/2022) K&L Notes: Portalupi is dedicated to California wines with an Italian soul. Winery notes: Shake Ridge Vineyard is located in the Sierra Foothills along a ridge 1,650–1,810 feet above sea level, overlooking the town of Sutter Creek. Renowned grower, Ann Kraemer is one o...

94 points Wine Spectator: "Edgy and rustic, with a dense, potent core of road tar, dark berry, black licorice and raspberry, this is a vital young wine that begs for cellaring, delivering purity, complexity and density. (JL)" (03/2014) 92 points Vinous: "Dark red cherries, menthol, tobacco and savory herbs are some of the many notes that flesh out in the 2011 Lithic. Even with all of its early appeal, the Lithic boasts tremendous depth and has the pedigree to develop beautifully for a number of years. The polished finish is striking, but today, the Lit...

94 points Vinous: "The 2011 Caldera impresses for its elegance and pure textural silkiness. Dark red cherry, plum, spice, leather and licorice notes meld together in a perfumed, fragrant Rhone blend. In 2011, the Caldera is distinctly savory, high-toned and delicate, but it is the wine's finish that impresses above all else. Caldera is 62% Mourvedre, 34% Grenache and 4% Counoise from Goldbud Vineyard in El Dorado. (AG)" (11/2013) 94 points Wine Spectator: "Explodes with dark berry, road tar, hot brick, tobacco and cigar notes that command attention, wi...

94 points Wine Advocate: "Readers should not miss the 2011 Sumo, a blend of 85% Petite Sirah, 13% Syrah and 2% Viognier. Sadly, there are only 200 cases of this stunning Petite Sirah-dominated red. Its inky/purple color is followed by a sumptuous perfume of violets, blueberries, blackberries, camphor and a hint of graphite. This full-bodied, rich effort is the finest wine in the Keplinger portfolio. It should age effortlessly for 15-20 years. (RP)" (12/2013) 93 points Vinous: "Keplinger's 2011 Sumo tastes like a young wine right out of tank, such is th...

Terah is a woman-owned winery dedicated to organic and biodynamic production. From the winemaker: "We currently purchase fruit from independent growers. Specifically, we want to work with growers that care about the environment, the land, and the people they work with. The belief is that farming greatly dictates overall wine quality, which is always the focus for sourcing. The goal is to find unique microclimates and vineyard sites that are capable of showcasing outstanding varietal typicity and are capable of producing expressive, structured, balanced w...

These are honest and pure California estate wines made with soul that are approachable in price as well as in the glass. 92 points Vinous: "The 2012 Rompecabezas, Favia's Rhone blend, brings together the dark fleshiness of Mourvedre and Syrah with aromatic top notes of Grenache. Crushed flowers, sweet red berries and tobacco are all given an extra dimension of sheen from the silky tannins. Layered and open-knit, the 2012 has plenty of radiance, not to mention considerable near and medium-term appeal. (AG)" (10/2015) 92 points Wine Spectator: "A bit rustic, this offers plenty of moving parts, from rich, earthy blackberry flavors to cedar, spice and tobacco leaf hints, end...
