Wine Enthusiast: "Ripe aromas of pear flesh and yellow-apple slices meet with a hint of butter and lots of chalk on the nose of this blend of 67% Grenache Blanc and 33% Roussanne. The palate offers grapefruit-skin, nectarine and pear flesh flavors, proving very easy to quaff if not overly complex. (MK)" (08/2018)

92 points Wine Enthusiast: " Dried cherry, pressed hibiscus and light baking-spice aromas show on the nose of this single-vineyard expression from one of the few vineyards in this appellation. Hearty flavors of cranberry, sagebrush and baked soil show on the sip. As with most Chalone wines, it is framed in a firm structure that takes time to mature, so drink 2022–2042. *Cellar Selection* (MK)" (10/2020)

2017 Bonny Doon "Le Cigare Blanc- Beeswax Vineyard" Arroyo Seco White Rhône Blend (Previously $28) (Previously $28)
Top Pick!
91 points Wine Enthusiast: "Slightly waxy aromas kick off this blend of 55% Grenache Blanc and 45% Roussanne from the Beeswax Vineyard, which also offers fresh lemons, dried peach and a sandstone minerality. There is a tart citrus line to the palate, which cuts through the creamier peach and melon flavors, wrapped in paraffin-like tannins." K&L Notes: Not to be confused with the post-Bonny Doon Vineyard sale "Cigare Blanc"...this 2017 bottling is from an bygone era when this wine sourced from a single, organic / biodynamically farmed vineyard in Arroyo ...

Jeb Dunnuck: "All Merlot, the 2016 The Immigrant has a complex, slightly exotic nose of green herbs, incense, cedarwood, and both red and black fruits. This carries to a medium-bodied red with light tannins, a juicy, elegant texture, and solid length on the finish." (09/2020) Wine Enthusiast: "Roasted plum, berry, crushed rock and strong oak aromas show on the nose of this bottling that honors the family's ancestors. There's a savory streak to the sip, where smoked pork in cranberry sauce, dried herbs and leather flavors arise. (MK)" (12/2020)

A varietal now almost endemic to San Benito County. This obscure grape originally from southwestern France, but now all but extinct there, somehow florishes in the rural Cienega Valley near Hollister. The true name of the grape is Mourtaou - however is has long been known locally as Cabernet Pfeffer named after the German botanist that propogated the original cuttings from his nursery in Saratoga, CA. Ryan Kobza's fruit comes from Wirz Vineyard's oldest blocks planted in 1903! These vines are grown in a mix of granite and limestone soils using organic pr...

I first "discovered" the wines of Pennrose at the Shades of Shake Ridge event a few years back and have been a huge fan ever since. Husband and wife team Mike and Ria both have other "day jobs" in the wine business, Mike as winemaker at the inimitable Green & Red in Chiles Valley high above Napa. And Ria at McEvoy Ranch in the hills just outside of Petaluma. The Pennrose wines have wonderful purity and elegance. Never high in alcohol of extraction, these are vibrant food friendly wines with clarity and sense of place. I highly recommend checking them out...

Named after a famed mountain peak in Monterey County and consisting of 70% Pinot Gris and 30% Pinot Blanc, their new Lucy Pico Blanco is a tribute to Monterey’s history as a cool-climate growing region. You might be surprised to learn that Monterey County hosts some of the largest plantings of Pinot Gris compared to any other coastal region in California!

Connoisseurs Guide: "60% Grenache Blanc; 32% Vermentino; 8% Clairette Blanche. Boon Doon Winery changed ownership early last year, but its founder, the inimitable Randall Grahm has stayed on as head winemaker. Among the many changes that have ensued is that all of Bonny Doon’s wines have been reduced in price, and the new incarnation of Le Cigare Blanc is nothing less than an out-and-out steal. It is a juicy, mildly floral wine that keys on sweet peaches graced with a light touch of honey and, while rounded, and slightly viscous in feel, it is buoyed by ...

A bone dry Riesling from the maestro, Ryan Stirm. This wine hails from arguably the most famed and sought after plot of Riesling in the USA - Pat Wirz's old vine planting from 1964. These vines are grown organically and dry-farmed. The roots reach down deep into the limestone-granite mix. Essentially a natural wine, this bottlingfrom Stirm sees no additions except a very small (26g/L) of sulfur. It's racy, fragrant, full of crstaline acidity and wet stone mineral. (Ryan Woodhouse - K&L Domestic Wine Buyer)

Winery notes: The Wirz vineyard was planted by Almaden in 1963, back when big wineries were still planting vines on their own roots and furrow irrigation. Miraculously, the vineyard remains intact, thanks to work of the Wirz family. They were hired by Almaden to farm it because they lived on the property. Almaden eventually sold the vineyard to Pat Wirz’s father and Pat is the man who has been in charge for the past 45 years, farming it as his father once did with strict practices that honor the old tradition of caring for the land as well as the vines. ...

About the winery: "Widely traveled and endowed with impeccable taste, Ben Pon could have chosen anywhere in the world to establish his namesake Bernardus Winery, with the intention of cultivating premier class wines. He selected Carmel Valley, with its west-facing orientation, hot days and chilly nights, and stunning beauty, confident his vineyards there could produce wines to rival the greatest on the globe. More than a quarter-century later, he’s accomplished that not only with his estate Bordeaux blend, called Marinus (after his middle name), but with...
