2019 Domaine Paul Jaboulet Aîné "La Chapelle" Hermitage (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
Top Pick!
98-100 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Might this be the next vintage of La Chapelle to crack triple digits? Knockout aromas of crushed stone, violets, blueberries, and cassis mark the nose of the 2019 Hermitage La Chapelle, while the full-bodied palate is undeniably more intense and powerful than the more elegant 2018. Rich and velvety, it coats the mouth with dark fruit and creamy-textured espresso, yet retains remarkable length and licorice-derived peppery freshness on the finish. Wow! (JC)" (05/2021) 96-98 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Compared to th...

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A massively rich effort, the 2019 Hermitage Cuvee Emilie Blanc - made almost entirely of Marsanne from the Maison Blanche lieu-dit - boasts scents of crushed stone, pencil shavings and ripe melon. Full-bodied, expansive and plush in the mouth, it showcases the power of white Hermitage without being overwhelming, and it finishes long, with robust hints of licorice that provide a refreshing note. Drink it now or forget it for a decade and drink it from 2031-2040. I get the impression that the wines of Domaine des R...

2018 Domaine des Remizières "Cuvée Emilie" Hermitage
Top Pick!
95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The flagship 2018 Hermitage Cuvée Emilie comes from the upper part of the appellation, in the Les Grandes Vignes lieu-dit, with a splash from the Les Rocoules as well. A beautiful, medium to full-bodied effort from this family, it sports a deep purple hue as well as loads of liquid rock and damp earth-like notes intermixed with plenty of crème de cassis, white flowers, graphite, and spice. With stunning purity, a balanced, elegant texture, ripe tannins, and a lengthy finish, this tight, compact, closed Hermitage needs 4-5 years of...

Domaine des Remizières are 4th generation winemakers that originally sold grapes to the local cooperative. After completing their winery in 1974, the family began production at their new property. The estate is now managed by Phillipe Desmeures, his daughter Emilie, and son Christophe. They have expanded to 30 ha with vineyards in Crozes-Hermitage, Saint-Joseph, and Hermitage. The Cuvée Christophe is a blend of 85% Marsanne and 15% Roussanne aged in a mix of new and used barrique. It captures the essence of rich, full-bodied whites from the region.

94-96 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Beautiful cassis, truffle, damp earth, and ground pepper emerge from the 2019 Hermitage La Maison Bleue. Coming from the eastern portion of Hermitage Hill, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a rounded, opulent texture, building tannins, and a great finish. It's certainly in the same league (and style) as the 2018, and while it's going to drink nicely at a young age, my money is on it evolving gracefully for 20-25 years." (11/2020) 94-96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Even richer, darker and more powerful th...

94 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2018 Crozes-Hermitage Cuvée Christophe is one of the flagship releases from this estate. It always has a modern style, yet I never feel it loses any classic Northern Rhône character. Deep blue/purple, with a beautiful nose of cassis, spiced meat, pepper, and graphite, it's medium to full-bodied and has integrated background oak, plenty of mid-palate depth, and a great finish. It shows the ripe, sexy style of the vintage yet has acidity and tannins. " (11/2020) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Impressively dark and s...

90-93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2018 Crozes Hermitage les Pierrelles made for a great start to my visit at this standout estate. It's grapey and intense, with hints of cedary wood accenting blueberry and blackberry fruit. It's full-bodied and supple, finishing lush and even a bit warm. It should be a lot of fun to drink as a young wine. (JC)" (01/2020) K&L Notes: The roots of the Belle family run deep in Hermitage and extend back to the 18th century when the family began acquiring vines in the region. When descendant Louis Belle assum...

90-92 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The base 2019 Crozes-Hermitage looks to be outstanding, with a beautiful purple color, classic Northern Rhône notes of darker fruits, pepper, and gamey tapenade, medium to full body, and a balanced, pure, seamless texture. It should be a smoking value and delivers the goods." (11/2020) 91 points Wine Enthusiast: "Whispers of eucalyptus and charred clove lend spice to black-currant and cherry flavors in this 100% Syrah sourced from vines averaging 45 years in age. Matured 15 months in a combination of new and used oak, it’s fu...

2017 J. Boutin "Les Hauts Granites" Crozes-Hermitage (Elsewhere $30) (Elsewhere $30)
Top Pick!
93 points Vinous: "Deep, shimmering violet. Dark berries, potpourri, exotic spices and a suggestion of smoky minerals on the highly perfumed nose. Juicy, penetrating and appealingly sweet, offering densely packed, energetic blackberry, cherry compote and violet flavors that are supported by a spine of juicy acidity. Supple, even tannins add grip to the impressively persistent, mineral-driven finish, which strongly repeats the floral note. (JR)" (04/2020) K&L Notes: J. Boutin is a newer project from Stephane Vedeau of Clos Bellane and La Ferme du Mont f...

93-96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The full-bodied, impressively inky 2019 Crozes Hermitage Domaine de Thalabert features blackberries and cassis, mulberries and blueberries, yet notes of violets, black olives and espresso keep it from being a one-dimensional fruit bomb. Rich, concentrated and dense, it's almost Port-like on the palate. I could see some people thinking it could be too much of a good thing, but maybe this wine just needs more élevage and additional time in the cellar compared to other recent vintages. It is a bit chunky and unfo...

93 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2017 Crozes-Hermitage Cuvée Louis Belle is a winner. Lots of black raspberries, toasted spice, new leather, and savory peppery notes emerge from the glass, and it's ripe, rounded, and sexy on the palate, with light tannins and plenty of upfront accessibility. It should keep for at least 7-8 years. I always love tasting through the releases from Domaine Belle, and they always show classic yet clean, pure profiles that are a joy to drink. While the domaine is located in Crozes Hermitage, they have small holdings in Hermitage an...

94 points Jeb Dunnuck: "More aromatic and exotic, the 2019 Crozes-Hermitage Roche Blanche ratchets up the intensity and offers a classic nose of quince, green almonds, brioche, and white flowers. Rich, medium to full-bodied, and wonderfully textured, it has a solid sense of freshness and purity as well as an almost Hermitage Blanc-like stature and depth. It should keep for a decade, although I would lean toward enjoying bottles over the coming 4-5 years." (04/2021) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2019 Crozes Hermitage Roche Blanche is ano...

2017 Domaine Paul Jaboulet Aîné "Domaine de Thalabert" Crozes-Hermitage
Top Pick!
94 points Jeb Dunnuck: "This terroir always delivers a wild, opulent, gamey style of wine, and the 2017 Crozes-Hermitage Domaine de Thalabert doesn’t disappoint. Loads of chocolaty black fruits, ground pepper, truffle, and smoked game, as well as a hint of black olives, emerge from the glass, and it’s medium to full-bodied, has a rocking texture, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It’s a classic example of this wine and terroir." (12/2019) 92 points James Suckling: "This has a very attractive feel in 2017. Sanguine aromas of chocolate, iron and dark ber...

95 points Decanter: "A full-bodied, harmonious blend, not quite as aggressively concentrated as his single-vineyard wines this year. Very tannic still, and well balanced despite its enormous size. Long finish, saturated with thick, fine tannins. The oak is quite prominent for now, but there's enough fruit to match it. Will be good when it's ready. 70% destemmed, then vinified plot-by-plot. The Syrah is aged in recent-use (but not new) barriques, the Mourvèdre in old barriques and the Grenache in larger barrels (mostly old) and concrete. Then the wine spe...

95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The flagship Croze release is the 2018 Crozes-Hermitage Roche Pierre. A big, rich, powerful wine, it has plenty of classy oak as well as ripe blue fruits, scorched earth, graphite, chocolate, and assorted meatiness to go with a full-bodied, rich, concentrated style on the palate. Displaying more density than the Cuvée Louis Belle, it needs 3-5 years of bottle age and will keep for 15-20 years. It's up with the crème de la crème of the vintage." (04/2021) 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "From old vines on granitic soils,...

92 points Decanter: "From Caroline Frey, also of Bordeaux’s Château La Lagune, this has a savoury nose and a lively blackcurrant and berry palate boasting black pepper spiciness. Serious, but smooth and supple, and ever so easy to drink. (GH)" (03/2020) Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2017 Crozes-Hermitage Les Jalets Bio is a charmer, with a soft, forward yet elegant style. It has plenty of Northern Rhône earthy dark fruits, pepper, and truffle, and is ideal for drinking over the coming 4-5 years." (12/2019) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Made in a fruit-forward ...

97 points Wine Spectator: "This shows stunning purity and range of flavors, with blanched almond, chamomile, green fig, persimmon and apricot notes all weaving around a core of heather honey and brioche. The long finish resonates with minerality. *Collectibles* (JM)" (12/2008) 96 points Vinous: "Light yellow. Kaleidoscopic bouquet of singed orange, musky herbs, potpourri, brown butter, smoky minerals, tarragon and fresh bay. Weighty citrus and dried pit fruit and cherry(!) flavors are complicated by candied licorice, botanical herbs and toasted grain, ...

98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "More concentrated and powerful, the 2010 Ermitage Les Greffieux is thrilling on all accounts. More of a long-term prospect than the ’11, it offers massive creme de cassis, scorched earth, graphite and crushed-rock like minerality to go with a full-bodied, rich, textured and structured profile on the palate. The purity here is off-the-charts and this incredible Syrah should be given 4-5 years in the cellar and enjoyed over the following two decades. (JD)" (08/2014) 96 points Wine Spectator: "This pumps some seri...

97 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Gorgeous black raspberry and cassis fruits as well as complex saddle leather, dried flower, spice, and stony minerality all emerge from the 2018 Hermitage. One of the finest wines I've tasted from Yann Chave, this beautiful wine is full-bodied and has a rounded, expansive texture, building tannins, and again, a wonderful sense of minerality. This stunning Hermitage will benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age and cruise for two decades. Bravo!" (11/2020) 94 points Vinous: "Youthful purple. Smoke- and mineral-accented black and blue...

99 points Jeb Dunnuck: "From one of the warmer terroirs on Hermitage Hill, the 2018 Ermitage Le Méal was all destemmed and vinified in concrete, followed by 18 months in 20% new demi-muids and barrels. It's unquestionably the ripest, most opulent of the single vineyard Hermitage and sports a dense purple/plum color as well as powerful notes of black raspberries, currants, camphor, cured meats, acacia flowers, and violets. Rich, concentrated, and full-bodied, it builds beautifully on the palate, has a ripe, expansive texture, sweet tannins, and a rocking ...

100 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Moving to the three single vineyard Hermitage Blancs, these are all perfect wines yet offer distinct characters. The 2019 Ermitage De L’Orée comes from more limestone soils in the Les Murets lieu-dit, on the eastern side of the appellation and was brought up in 15% new demi-muids. It reveals a vivid gold hue to go with gorgeous honeyed peach, white currants, quince, crushed stone, and white flower-like aromas and flavors. This full-bodied white has terrific concentration, a rich, layered mouthfeel, beautiful acidity, and a finish...

2018 M. Chapoutier "L'Ermite" Ermitage Rouge (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
Back In Stock!
98-100 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "As usual, Chapoutier's 2018 Ermitage l'Ermite is a standout among standouts. Crushed stone, blueberries, even a touch of herb feature on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is cool and crunchy but also ripe and generous. It's rich and long, with a firm, granitic structure that should enable two-plus decades of aging. This has it all. (JC)" (12/2019) 97-99 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Similar to the Le Pavillon with its liquid rock minerality, the 2018 Ermitage L’Ermite's inky purple/blue color is followed a gorg...

96-98 points Jeb Dunnuck: "I was able to taste the 2018 Hermitage Blanc from multiple barrels and tank, and I continue to think Jean-Louis fashions one of the greatest whites on planet earth. Gorgeous white flowers, honeysuckle, ripe quince, and toasted almond notes dominate the bouquet, and it has that rare mix of richness and opulence paired with incredible purity, freshness, and focus. It has a wealth of material yet also shows the vintage’s more rounded, sexy style. Plan on drinking bottles on release and over the following 2-4 years or hold off for ...

100 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Readers wanting to understand pure granite soils need to taste the inky blue/black-colored 2016 Ermitage L’Ermite, as just sticking your nose in the glass is enough to instantly transport you to this magical hillside. Crème de cassis, smoked earth, gunpowder, liquid rocks, and graphite all emerge from this deep, hugely concentrated, massive wine that has awesome depth and richness, building tannins, and vibrant acidity as well as a monster finish. It needs a decade of cellaring and will keep for half a century. This is what you c...

97-99 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Massive red and black fruits, smoked meats, graphite, asphalt, licorice, and ground pepper notes all soar from the 2019 Ermitage Le Méal, which is 100% Syrah from the more loess soils and full-south facing Méal lieu-dit. This puppy is locked and loaded on the palate, with a huge, rich, mouthfilling style, ripe tannins, and a blockbuster of a finish." 96-98 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Moving to the single vineyards, the 2019 Ermitage Les Greffieux is packed with potential, offering lots of cassis and black raspberry fruit as well as notes of bouquet garni, truffly earth, spice, and pepper." (11/2020) 96 points Decanter: "A distinct smoky vein running through this year. Powerful, very ripe, muscular but juicy with great freshness and power. The alcohol is slightly raised, but it’s such a big, impressive wine with very ripe, massy tannins. (MW)" (10/2020) K&L Notes: PLEASE NOTE: This pre-arrival item is be...

98 points Jeb Dunnuck: "More bloody meat, black raspberries, wood smoke, spice, and truffle notes emerge from the 2017 Hermitage Le Méal, a massive, opulent effort that has loads of opulence and fruit, building tannins, a gorgeous mid-palate, and a monster finish. It's one of the finest wines I've tasted from this estate! It’s already approachable yet promises to evolve gracefully for 20-25 years or more. 98+" (12/2019) 97 points Decanter: "From south-exposed vines in lieu-dit Le Meal, the fruit is all destemmed and fermented in concrete, then aged for...

95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2019 Hermitage Blanc is a 60/40 split of Marsanne and Roussanne that was brought up in plenty of new barrels. Its medium gold hue is followed by a great nose of honeyed lemon, quince, crushed stone, and bitter almonds. It shows more butter and toasty notes with time in the glass and is just a classy, rich, complex Hermitage. Full-bodied on the palate, with plenty of viscosity paired with notable freshness, it's geared for the dinner table and will keep for 15 years or more in cold cellars." (04/2021) 93 points Robert Parker'...

100 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The richest and most fruit loaded of the trio is the 2019 Ermitage Le Méal Blanc, which comes from a warmer terroir. This killer Hermitage Blanc has a vivid gold hue as well as a crazy good nose of quince, honeyed currants, acacia flowers, spice, and orange marmalade. It doesn't have the minerality of the L'Ermite (and to a lesser extent, the De l’Orée) yet has a more opulent, fat, unctuous style that's still flawlessly balanced and remarkably pure. This is another magical Hermitage from Chapoutier that does everything right. I f...

95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Rivaling the 2015, if not even better (time will tell), the 2018 Crozes-Hermitage Cuvée Louis Belle is a rock star of a Crozes-Hermitage, revealing a dense purple color as well as fabulous crème de cassis and blackberry fruits interwoven with peppered beef, violets, new leather, and flowers. The real deal, it's concentrated and full-bodied, with wonderful tannins, flawless balance, and a great finish. It has a pure, polished, almost modern edge, yet it brings plenty of background meaty, bloody, black olive notes with time in the g...

97 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2010 Hermitage La Chapelle is a big, inky, blockbuster styled effort that’s just now starting to enter its drink window. A huge perfume of black (and some blue) fruits, rendered bacon fat, iron, and graphite notes all lead to a powerful, full-bodied Hermitage that has incredibly purity and depth, awesome concentration, and building yet polished tannins. It’s an incredible wine that is still going to benefit from another 4-5 years of bottle age, and I suspect it will see its 50th birthday in fine form. 97+" (03/2019) 96 point...

2018 Delas Frères "Ligne de Crête - Les Grandes Vignes" Hermitage (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
Top Pick!
99 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "While I've had multiple looks at previous vintages, this is my first review of the 2018 Hermitage Ligne de Crête Les Grandes Vignes. Inky in hue, it boasts powerful, brooding aromas that include hints of hardwood charcoal, dark berries, licorice, crushed stone and pencil shavings. Full-bodied and almost painfully intense, it's a huge, mouthfilling wine that seems capable of aging up to three decades. Rich, supple and creamy in texture, yet possessing remarkable length and retronasal nuance, it has to rank up ther...

98 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Lastly, the 2016 Ermitage Le Méal is the top wine from Ferraton, and rightly so, as it’s a magical wine in 2016. Rocking notes of black raspberries, blackberries, toasted spices, tapenade, and dry aged beef all emerge from the glass, and it hits the palate with a wealth of material yet stays balanced, layered, and seamless. It's a sensational wine that's up with the top wines of the vintage. Hats off to the team at Ferraton for this remarkable wine as well as their full lineup of wines in 2016." 100 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2019 Ermitage L’Ermite Blanc comes all from the l'Hermite lieu-dit located up above the Le Méal and around the Chapelle, which is a mix of granite and limestone soils. This cuvée sees a touch more new oak and is brought up 90% in 25% new demi-muids and 10% in stainless steel tanks. It's a more chiseled, backward (which is usual) wine that has intense white currants and stone fruits as well as brilliant honeysuckle, licorice, and celery seed nuances, with a liqueur of rocks-like minerality. With flawless balance, full-bodied r...

J. L. Chave Selection was launched in the 1990s as a way to introduce wine consumers to the Chave style, at a lower price point, retaining the winery's famous quality. Originally much of the wine came from other producers; now, younger plantings of the domaine's own properties are included. Wine writer Richard Jennings fills in the details, from a tasting with Erin Cannon Chave: "The Crozes-Hermitage Silene is named after Bacchus’s drunken father-in-law. Most of Crozes is on the valley floor, on clay, but the Chave’s parcel sits on the east-facing rear f...

98 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Coming all from the pure granite soils of the Bessards lieu-dit, on the western side of Hermitage, the 2018 Ermitage Le Pavillon is 100% Syrah that was all destemmed and aged 18 months in just 15% new French oak. This beauty has closed down since bottling and will need considerable bottle age, but it’s a beauty. Deep purple-hued, with a meaty, gamey bouquet of black and blue fruits, crushed rock, liquid violets, olives, and acacia flowers, this sensational wine hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a tight, backward mouthfeel...

97 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Its dense purple color is followed by a smorgasbord-like array of black raspberries, smoked game, bouquet garni, violets, and high-end leather. Ripe, sexy and textured on the palate, it still has a weightless mouthfeel, building tannins, and a great finish. It's not quite as massive or concentrated as the 2006, but it's certainly a gorgeous Hermitage. Forget bottles for 4-6 years and enjoy over the following two decades." (11/2020) 95-97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Chapoutier's 2018 Ermitage les Greffieux features fai...

98 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Aged 36 months in new oak, the colossal 2015 Hermitage Ex Voto is up with the finest vintages of this cuvée to date and is certainly in the same ballpark as the 2009 and 2010. This deep, powerful, muscular Hermitage boasts a saturated purple color to go with its huge nose of crème de cassis, freshly crushed rocks, incense, charcoal, and spring flowers. Full-bodied, with good acidity and huge richness and density, it requires 5-7 years of cellaring and should drink well for 40+ years. (JD)" (12/2018) 95-97 points Robert Parker's ...

It's medium to full-bodied, silky and fine, without any suggestion of over-ripeness or jamminess. It should drink well on release and for at least a decade thereafter. (JC)" (01/2020) 93 points Vinous: "Opaque violet color. 94 points Decanter: "Graphite, plum and blackberry. Beautifully silky, has a good sense of fluidity but also remarkable intensity and concentration. Energy and drive, with deep fruit and sweet tannins. Has a mineral straightness that helps to temper the ripe fruit and ripe tannin. The alcohol is quite raised but not unbalanced. A cut above most Crozes-Hermitages, more serious in style and texture. (MW)" (06/2021)

96 points Decanter: "Almond, quince and a touch of rhubarb at this early stage; you sense the ripeness, but it's not exotically fruity in 2020. The silkiness and glycerol on the palate are quite present, this sample shows plentiful oak, lending matchstick and cashew to the finish. An elegant vintage of Le Méal. Well balanced, far from massive. Not as powerful or concentrated as the past few vintages, this will drink well young, and age into the medium term. Not a hugely-long lived Méal I suspect, but a delightful one nonetheless. There is generous alcoho...

Offering a magical bouquet of liqueur of rock, quince, poached pears, orange blossom, and honeysuckle, it's a powerful, super-rich, expressive, full-bodied white that could come from nowhere else in the world. It's approachable today (it needs plenty of air) yet won't hit prime for another 7-8 years or so." (12/2019) 98-100 points Robe...
