2019 Domaine Cécile Chassagne Gigondas
Top Pick!
Named for the family's second-generation winemaker, Cécile Chassagne took over the vineyard in Gigondas that had been originally planted by her father in 1974. This blend of Grenache, Mourvedre and Syrah is made in a traditional method without destemming. A long fermentation in open-topped wood tanks is followed by aging the wine for four months in Allier oak casks. The resulting wine is a medium-bodied, meaty and elegant expression of Gigondas terroir.

93 points Jeb Dunnuck: "A blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrahs, and 10% Mourvèdre brought up in tank (the Grenache wasn’t destemmed), the 2017 Gigondas offers a classic bouquet of dark fruits (black cherries, blackberries) spring flowers and sappy garrigue, with a fresh, vibrant style aromatically. These gives way to a medium-bodied, elegant Gigondas that has fine tannins, good acidity, and the class to evolve for over a decade. It’s well worth seeking out! " (09/2019) K&L Notes: The Verquière estate has been passed down from father to son for four genera...

2019 Moulin de la Gardette "Cuvée Ventabren" Gigondas
Top Pick!
98 points Decanter: "Aromatically slightly subdued, though there is a sense of great freshness. Thyme emerges after a while along with a smoky bacon note. Fluid and fast-moving in the mouth, there's a great sense of tension and intensity on the palate. The tannins are present, like fine sand in texture with a very light grain. This feels painfully young to drink now. There's no serious reduction, and this will have a lot to give when the time comes. It exudes balance and power, but try to wait for this to show its best. Ninety-year-old vines. Grapes are ...

2019 Domaine Saint-Damien "Les Souteyrades" Gigondas
Top Pick!
96 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Lastly, the 2019 Gigondas Les Souteyrades is more classic, with pure dark, peppery fruits as well as garrigue, cedar, and leather notes. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated, and perfectly balanced, it has impressive tannins and will benefit from short-term bottle age. As with the other Gigondas here, you should expect 10-15 years of prime drinking. This cuvée is 80% Grenache and 20% Mourvèdre, aged all in foudre." (01/2022) 93-95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Not as effusive on the nose as the La Louisiane, the 2019 Gig...

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Swirls of black raspberry ice cream and dark chocolate combine in Vignon's 2019 Gigondas, a blend of 95% Grenache and 5% Mourvèdre from numerous small parcels dotted around the appellation. Matured in a large wooden vat, there's no apparent oak aromas or flavors, just the purity of old-vine fruit, creamy tannins, ample concentration and a bright, vibrant-and long-finish. With its combination of intensity and tension, it should drink well for a decade or more." (09/2020) 90-92 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Last of the 20...

95-97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Aged in demi-muids, the 2019 Gigondas Clovis Saurel is a selection of old-vine Grenache and Mourvèdre from clay soils. Compared with the other wines in the lineup, the cedar and vanilla shadings are noticeable but in other contexts wouldn't be considered obtrusive. Notes of ripe plum, black cherry, blueberry, black olive and licorice predominate. Full-bodied and velvety, this is plusher and richer on the palate than the other cuvées at Saint Damien, with a generous, lingering finish. Flat-out yummy now, it als...

2019 Famille Perrin "Domaine du Clos des Tourelles" Gigondas
Top Pick!
97 points Jeb Dunnuck: "All Grenache that was vinified in tank and brought up in tronconique wooded tank, the 2019 Gigondas Clos Des Tourelles is up there with the top vintages of this cuvée and is well worth seeking out. Roughly 60% destemmed, it has a core of black raspberry fruit as well as lots of ground pepper, spice, violets, and floral notes in its full-bodied, ultra-fine, pure, seamless style." (11/2021) 96 points James Suckling: "Striking nose of very small red and black berries, together with powdered spice. Rich and sophisticated with a very...

2017 Gigondas LaCave "Brut du Foudre 56" Gigondas
Top Pick!
92-94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "From a selection of old vines, the 2017 Gigondas le Brut du Foudre is 75% Grenache, 15% Syrah and 5% each Cinsault and Mourvèdre. Lovely scents of flowering garrigue, rose petals and black tea highlight this elegant-looking offering. It's full-bodied, intense and creamy textured, with a long, briny and velvety finish. I'm looking forward to trying this out of bottle when it's released. (JC)" (08/2018) 90-92 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The same blend as the De Bois Neuf release yet aged all in foudre, the 2017 Gigon...

94 points Decanter: "An impressively deep and inviting nose of crème de mure and violets, nicely defined. Full-bodied but not massive, it has a rounded mouthfeel and concentrated berry fruits with notes of sloe, menthol and woody herbs. A powerfully intense wine with a lovely sense of freshness and a polished mouthfeel, with a fine patina of dusty tannins. It will age to the medium term, but is more about joyful early drinking. (MW)" (10/2018) 92 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Leading off the wines from bottle, the 2016 Gigondas is a classic wine from this estat...

91-93 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Moving to the three Gigondas I was able to taste, the 2019 Gigondas Vieilles Vignes comes from a mix of terroirs on the lower plain, around the estate, and is mostly Grenache brought up in larger, very old foudre and concrete tanks. Deep purple/ruby hued, with a beautiful perfume of black raspberries, candied flowers, and sweet garrigue, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a silky texture, great tannins, and plenty of length on the finish. This is a more finesse-driven, silky, elegant wine than past vintages...

95 points Decanter: "A full-bodied, harmonious blend, not quite as aggressively concentrated as his single-vineyard wines this year. Very tannic still, and well balanced despite its enormous size. Long finish, saturated with thick, fine tannins. The oak is quite prominent for now, but there's enough fruit to match it. Will be good when it's ready. 70% destemmed, then vinified plot-by-plot. The Syrah is aged in recent-use (but not new) barriques, the Mourvèdre in old barriques and the Grenache in larger barrels (mostly old) and concrete. Then the wine spe...

Established in 1900 in the heart of Gigondas, Gour de Chaule is now run by the founder's great-granddaughter, Stephanie Fumoso. This is a female-driven property as Stephanie's grandmother and mother were both actively involved in making the wines and establishing the property's domaine bottlings. The estate is comprised of 15 hectares planted in the surrounding region, 10 of which are within the appellation of Gigondas. The rose is made from the direct press method using 50% Cinsault with the rest Mourvedre and Grenache. No malolactic takes place making...

96 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The flagship is 2018 Gigondas Les Hautes Garrigues and is another red from this estate that does everything right. Deep ruby/purple-colored with a brilliant bouquet of ripe wild strawberries, blueberries, ground pepper, garrigue, and new saddle leather, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, flawless balance, and building yet seamless tannins. It’s certainly in the new style of this estate and is beautifully done. Enjoy bottles anytime over the coming two decades. The young yet obviously talented Benjamin Gras co...

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The spitting image of elegance and finesse, the 2014 Gigondas le Lieu Dit (100% Grenache all from sandy soils) offers up a beautiful perfume of ripe strawberries, framboise, creamy licorice and crushed flowers. Showing the more fresh, lively style of the vintage, yet with terrific density and depth, it has sweet tannin, a silky texture and a great finish. This beauty is already impossible to resist, but will evolve nicely for a decade. There are just over 400 cases of this beauty made. Readers wanting to get a...

95-97 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Looking at the Gigondas releases, the 2020 Gigondas Vieilles Vignes doesn’t give anything to the two single vineyard releases and offers awesome aromatics, full-bodied richness, a round, lush, yet pure mouthfeel, and ripe yet certainly present tannins. It’s loaded with Provençal, garrigue, and peppery goodness, and it’s going to be a brilliant value. This cuvée is an 80/20 split of Grenache and Mourvèdre raised all in foudre." (01/2022)
Price: $29.99

94-97 points Jeb Dunnuck: "All Grenache aged in demi-muid, the 2020 Gigondas Clovis Saurel is certainly more modern in style, but it never loses its Southern Rhône soul. It has complex Provençal garrigue, spice box, cherry, and peppery aromas and flavors as well as a deep, rich, broad mouthfeel." (01/2022)

93 points Jeb Dunnuck: "More fresh, pure, and actually feminine than the straight Gigondas, the 2006 Château de Saint-Cosme Gigondas Valbelle, almost all Grenache with a splash of Syrah, delivers a gorgeous array of bright blackberry, violets, spring flowers, licorice, smoked herbs, and crushed stone-like qualities on the nose. Full-bodied and seamless on the palate, with loads of polish, impeccable balance, and a classically structured feel, this brilliant Gigondas is still very youthful and fresh. While delicious now, I would give bottles another 2-3 y...

95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Compared to the pretty, slightly floral style of the Valbelle, the 2006 Château de Saint-Cosme Gigondas Le Claux is a brut! A blend of 100% Grenache from clay and limestone soils, aged in a combination of new and old barrels, it displays a decidedly masculine, meaty profile with thrilling aromatics of smoked meats, prosciutto, cedar, and dried spices that are balanced by beautifully ripe black and red fruits. This leads to a full-bodied, structured Gigondas that has vibrant acidity, loads of ripe fruit, and a tannic, very long, an...

95-97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The nearly 100-year-old Mourvèdre vines cropped a mere 10 hectoliters per hectare for the 2019 Gigondas Le Plateau, meaning there are just three demi-muids. It's a powerful, richly tannic version of this wine, full-bodied but not inelegant, marrying plummy fruit with spicy complexities reminiscent of tree bark, star anise, clove and more. While reasonably open as a barrel sample, I suspect it will close down and require several years of aging after release yet be capable of drinking well for two decades. (JC)"...

96 points James Suckling: "This shows the greatness that Gigondas is capable of. A huge wine, but with great structure and aromatic complexity that takes your breath away. Big black fruit, but so many herbal and savory nuances, then comes the long, smoky and meaty finish. Excellent aging potential. A blend of 80% grenache, 8% syrah, 7% cinsault and 5% clairette." (03/2022) 94 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2019 Gigondas Les Racines comes from older vines from slightly lower down on the slope (it's still at altitude) and around the estate. It's slightly more ...

98 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Just about perfection in a glass, the 2017 Gigondas Le Claux got a few expletives in my notes. Made from 100% Grenache from a loamy, limestone parcel that’s a stone’s throw from the estate, just outside the village, it boasts a deep purple color as well as stunning notes of kirsch, cassis, camphor, dried earth, ground pepper, and background oak. Deep, powerful, full-bodied and multi-dimensional on the palate, this blockbuster Gigondas is going to benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age (or more) and cruise for two decades in cool cel...

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Always the most elegant of the single vineyard releases, the 2006 Gigondas Le Poste is almost all Grenache and comes from a steep, terraced vineyard located just beside the estate. Reminding me of a beautifully mature red Burgundy with its sweet cherry and currants fruits, spice-box, forest floor, camphor and dried flowers, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, silky tannin, a great mid-palate and no shortage of length on the finish. Pure class all the way, enjoy this beauty anytime over the com...

94-97 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Lastly, the 2015 Gigondas Hautes Garrigues (60/40 Grenache and Mourvèdre) is a beauty boasting killer notes of dark fruits, crushed rocks, pepper, garrigue and scorched earth. This seriously good 2015 has building richness, a stacked mid-palate and a huge finish, all suggesting short-term cellaring will be your friend. It will keep for two decades of more." (10/2017) 93-95 points Vinous: "Full ruby. Smoke-accented aromas of red and dark berry liqueur, incense, spicecake and candied flowers show outstanding energy and clarity....

90 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Iron, iodine, black olive, and darker, peppery fruits define the 2019 Gigondas, a medium-bodied, ripe, nicely balanced Gigondas from this estate. Based on 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah that was destemmed and aged in tank, it’s going to evolve gracefully with its ripe tannins and impeccable balance." (01/2022) Jancis Robinson: "Very fruit-led nose, sweet cassis and a little note of undergrowth and sous bois to complement the ripe fruit. Fresh on the palate with that lovely rich fruit character coming through. Well-judged tannins and...

94-96 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2020 Gigondas La Louisiane is also just about overflowing with Provençal charm and character, offering full-bodied aromas and flavors of red and black fruits, ground pepper, violets, and orange blossom. It too is seamless, has ripe, polished tannins, and a great finish. " (01/2022)
Price: $29.99

91-93 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2020 Gigondas Réserve, which can be thought of as the traditional blend of the estate, is 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah, and the rest Mourvèdre and Cinsault. It shows the elegant, seamless style of this beautiful vintage and has medium to full-bodied aromas and flavors of ripe black raspberries, strawberries, toasted spice, lavender, and Provençal garrigue. It’s worth a case purchase. " (01/2022)
Price: $34.99

94-96 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2020 Gigondas Le Plateau comes from a single plot as well and is 100% Mourvèdre that’s vinified and aged in demi-muids. Awesome Mourvèdre notes of meaty red, blue, and black fruits as well as ground pepper, spice, and floral notes define this beauty, and it’s medium to full-bodied, with a classic, nicely structured, focused mouthfeel, ripe yet present tannins, and a great finish." (01/2022) 94 points Decanter: "Earthy liquorice note to the red berry fruit and a touch of blackberry. I like the vibrancy, the intensity. Tann...

95-97 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Always a bigger, slightly richer wine, the 2020 Gigondas La Colline offers lots of strawberry, blackberry, and even a hint of cassis in its fruit profile as well as more spice, pepper, and dried flowers. It’s full-bodied and wonderfully textured, with silky tannins that emerge on the finish. As usual, this is all Grenache (80% destemmed) from a single parcel that saw a longer maceration and will spend 18 months in demi-muids." (01/2022) 94 points Decanter: "Fuller-bodied than most 2020 Gigondas, this has good fruit, purity an...

94-96 points Jeb Dunnuck: "A classic expression of this terroir, the 2020 Gigondas Le Lieu-Dit is all Grenache from a cooler, sandy parcel located just beside the domaine. It has beautiful red (and some black) fruits as well as spicy, floral nuances. It’s pure silk on the palate and is medium to full-bodied, seamless, and pure. I’d buy it if I saw it." (01/2022) 93 points Decanter: "Good sense of purity on the nose, classic Gigondas Grenache. Acidity is quite marked, the structure is crisp and tight, underpinning kirsch and raspberry notes. Rounded but...
Price: $54.99

94-96 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2020 Gigondas Les Souteyrades is more structured, with notable acidity as well as tannins. Full-bodied aromas and flavors of blackberries, cassis, ground pepper, and violets give way to a rich, concentrated, focused Gigondas that’s going to benefit from a handful of years in the cellar.
