95 points Wine Advocate: "From the Hyde vineyard, the 2018 Chardonnay vivo has open-knit aromas of baked apples and lemon peel, cut hay, saline and almonds with a spicy undercurrent. The palate is medium-bodied, silky and super energetic, opulent but pleasantly punishing in its raciness all at once, broad then precise, savory then citrusy, with incredibly addicting juiciness begging for another sip on the very long, coiled finish. This is fantastic, singular, super structured and should age a very long time in bottle. Wow! About 100 cases were made. Cali...

Possibly one of the hardest California wines to keep in stock, the Rombauer Chardonnay is THE Chardonnay that fans of the buttery, spicy, ripe and rich take on the varietal measure all other Chards against. Winery tasting notes: "Aromas of ripe yellow peach, melon, and chamomile all framed by freshly baked pie crust. The palate is bright with flavors of nectarine, followed by a subtle spice, and lively acidity. The finish leaves you wanting another sip."

92 points Vinous: "Bright, deep red. Urgent crushed raspberry and cherry on the high-pitched, tight nose, accented by spices, bitter chocolate and a hint of pepper. Wiry and energetic in the mouth, but with sneaky depth to the flavors of raspberry, pepper and spices. Finishes long and perfumed, with firm tannins spreading out to saturate the palate. This bracing, very young pinot needs two or three years to open and unwind. (ST)" (05/2013) 91 points Wine Advocate: "The 2011 Pinot Noir Jenkins Ranch comes from a very cold site planted with the Dijon clo...

92 points Vinous: "Good bright, dark red. Captivating, nuanced nose offers pomegranate, cherry, spices, lavender and loamy underbrush. Silky and vibrant on entry, then dense but light on its feet, with very pure, youthfully taut flavors of berries, herbs and licorice. Nicely dry and energetic wine with a bright, perfumed finish supported by a fine dusting of tannins. This has the stuffing and structure to evolve gracefully in bottle. I like this style. 92+ (ST)" (05/2013)

(TF)" (10/2023) 91 points Wine Enthusiast: "Complexity and richness are matched by good acidity and a gentle mousse in this welcoming, generous wine. This is the second release of Etude "Deer Camp" Pinot Noir and the first of the winery's two vineyard-designated wines. The wine comes from a unique parcel of the western-facing Deer Camp Vineyard tucked away in the northwest corner of the Carneros appellation. The well-drained Kidd Stony Loam soils contribute to small vines that tend toward dark fruit and overtly structured expressions with balanced acidity. The 2005 vintage's bouquet is saturated with boysenberry and blueberry aromas dusted with cloves, smoke, fresh-tilled earth and lavender notes. Ful...

It's a blend of several blocks and sees approximately 60% new French oak." 94 points Wine Spectator: "Impressive for the generous, plump flavors and the restraint and elegance of the candied ginger peel, briny preserved lemon, peppery white flower and buttery peach pastry flavors on a plush frame. Ricci Vineyard in the heart of Carneros is home to a unique planting of St. Laurent. This unusual varietal is genetically related to Pinot Noir and most commonly found in Austria. Several small producers in California known for their interest in off-the-beaten-path grape varietals source fruit from Ricci and it has become highly sought after! Filomena's version employs 50% carbonic-maceration (like with Beaujolais) and ageing in once-used 400L Puncheon. The wine rests on lees for 9 months before being bottle unfined, unfiltered. Just 65 cases produced.

Winemaker and co-owner Michael Lancaster used 100% concrete egg fermentation, sans malolactic fermentation, on this Pinot Gris. According to the producer, the concrete egg gave the Pinot Gris "balanced softness paired with elegant citrus and stonefruit notes." 162 cases total production.

With medium to full body, it has good overall freshness, some chewy tannins, and a great finish, all making for an outstanding Syrah. It will be better in another year and keep for 7-8. Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2004 Hyde de Villaine "HdV - Hyde Vineyard" Carneros Syrah (92CG, 92ST, 90WE). Connoisseurs Guide: "**Two Stars** Deeply fruited, generously oaked and well-focused on varietal spice, the latest HDV bottling gets right to the richness that is inherent in the grape without making any sacrifice to excessive ripeness. It is big but supple and polished in feel, and it shows plentiful extract, yet its sense of refinement remains all the way to the end, its tannins notwithstanding. So neatly crafted, in fact, that it can be enjoyed soon with a juicy rack of lamb, it is a quite ageworthy wine with a future that is at least as attractive as its wholly compelling present. It need not be drunk any time soon." (11/2006)

Bid on this 3-bottle tasting lot; including 1-bottle of 2010 Shafer "Red Shoulder Ranch" Carneros Chardonnay (93WE, 93WS, 92RP), 1-bottle of 2011 Shafer "Red Shoulder Ranch" Carneros Chardonnay (94ST, 93WE, (90-92RP), 91VN, 91W&S, 90WS), and 1-bottle of 2016 Shafer "Red Shoulder Ranch" Carneros Chardonnay (94JD, 94WE, 93VN, 90RP). Of the 2011 Shafer "Red Shoulder Ranch" Carneros Chardonnay, Int'l Wine Cellar writes: "Bright yellow. Cool, almost Chablis-like aromas of lime, white pepper, nettles, mint and menthol, plus a savory whiff of chicken broth. Dense and intensely flavored, with superb acidity and penetrating minerality giving this wine an amazingly racy quality for its 14.8% alcohol. The long, rising finish features terrific lingering spice character. My favorite chardonnay to date from Shafer, this beauty offers a great combination of weight and intensity. (ST)" (06/2013)
