2018 Argiano Brunello di Montalcino (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
New!
97 points Kerin O'Keefe: "Camphor, forest berry, dark spice and new leather aromas form the enticing nose. Elegantly structured and radiant, the linear, vibrant palate delivers ripe red cherry, pomegranate, ground clove and peppercorn set against a backbone of bright acidity and taut, fine-grained tannins. What a beauty." (11/2022) 97 points Wine Enthusiast: "Like a good Valentine’s Day party, everything is shades of red on the vibrant, sanguine nose, from strawberries and cranberries to savory notes of pennies, brick and crisp leather. Citrus joins th...

2016 Poggiarellino Brunello di Montalcino
Top Pick!
93 points James Suckling: "A firm, chewy Brunello with cherry, walnut and black-truffle character, as well as tile undertones. It’s full-bodied with dark fruit and mahogany and cedar undertones. Tight and wooded at the moment, but should come round with bottle age. Give it time. Try after 2023." (11/2020) K&L Notes: Poggiarellino is an evolving star in our Direct Import portfolio. From Montalcino, this tiny winery is making superb wines at stunning prices. We've been importing them for over a decade and their wines have simply gotten better and better.
Price: $39.99

Poggiarellino is a small property in the north of Montalcino and is not far from Altesino. They started making wine with the 1996 vintage and slowly grew their production. K&L started importing their wine with the 2000 vintage. Their Brunello di Montalcino production is usually about 450 cases to 500 cases and about half of that number for the Rosso di Montalcino. The Brunello is aged in 25hl Slavonian oak barrels and the Rosso di Montalcino is aged in stainless steel tanks.

" (06/2022) 91 points Vinous: "The 2020 Chianti Classico Berardenga is a classic Fèlsina wine. It can be enjoyed now or cellared for 10-15 years. 2016 Ferrero Brunello di Montalcino Riserva
Top Pick!
93 points Vinous: "The bouquet on the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is almost confectionary, with sweet Christmas spice giving way to sugar-dusted plums, black cherries, cloves and hints of cocoa. It washes across the palate with velvety waves of polished red fruits, as hints of sour citrus and inner rose tones create contrast and balance. This tapers off structured with fine tannins, a twang of tart black currant and salted licorice. The 2016 needs time to unwind and integrate the wood spice that currently dominates the nose, but there’s a lot und...

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "New leather, ripe black-skinned fruit, tobacco and menthol are just some of the aromas you'll find in this delicious red. Full-bodied and elegantly structured, the accessible palate delivers dried cherry, raspberry jam, licorice and a hint of white pepper set against velvety tannins. (KO)" (04/2022) 93 points James Suckling: "Extremely refined and together 2017, with round, fine tannins that show tension and balance. Medium to full body, creamy texture and a delicious finish. 95 points Vinous: "Good full red. Wonderfully clean, enticing aromas of red cherry, minerals, white pepper, aromatic herbs and smoke. Sappy and densely packed, showing terrific mineral lift to the rich ripe red berry and saline flavors. Bright and focused on the long, slowly building finish. Beautiful wine. (ID)" (04/2018)

91 points James Suckling: "A seductive nose of plums, wild raspberries, fresh cherries, sage, pine cones, white pepper and musk. Medium-bodied with finely knit tannins. Creamy and soft finish. Drink or hold." (07/2022) 90 points Vinous: "The 2020 Chianti Colli Senesi is bold, powerful and super-expressive. Cedar, tobacco, leather, dried herbs and perfumed earthy undertones give the 2020 its distinctive aromatic profile. This mid-weight, layered Colli Senesi has a ton to offer. The purity of the fruit comes through nicely, especially with air. It's Coll...

2017 Cortonesi "Poggiarelli" Brunello di Montalcino
Top Pick!
94 points Wine Advocate: "This is a second single-vineyard wine made by Cortonesi. The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Poggiarelli reveals dense and rich fiber that wraps thickly but smoothly over the palate. This wine is woven tightly with soft layers of black fruit, plum, spice, tar and licorice. It is important to underline the difference between the more compact and vertical La Mannella against this more generous and broad-based wine, especially when making food-pairing decisions. This is your proverbial charred-meat wine. (ML)" (02/2022) 93 points Jam...

94 points Vinous: "The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva does a great job of taking the warmth of the vintage mixed with extended aging to create a beautifully balanced wine. It blends rich exotic spices with black cherries, wild herbs, hints of leather and flowery undergrowth to form an alluring bouquet that keeps you coming back to the glass. It’s creamy in texture, casting a savory display of wild berry fruit across a medium bodied frame, as salty minerals saturate, and lively acids maintain freshness. Youthfully dense and poised, this tapers off to...

92 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2020 Chianti Classico is ripe with juicy red and black berry fruit, offering notes of candied black raspberry, crushed violet, and forest floor. Medium to full-bodied and savory, with tart black cherry, orange oil, fine tannins, and dusty earth, it has a driving persistent energy through the mid-palate and is harmonious in its balance between its more youthful primary fruit and light savory touch throughout. (AF)" (01/2023) 92 points Vinous: "The 2020 Chianti Classico is striking. Bright, punchy and vibrant, the 2020 possess...

2017 Ferrero Brunello di Montalcino
Top Pick!
91 points James Suckling: "Lots of cherry and orange peel character on the nose follow through to a full body with loads of ripe fruit and round tannins. Tangy at the end. Needs time to come together and calm down. Try after 2024." (11/2022) 91 points Vinous: "The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino bursts up from the glass with a perfumed display of raspberries, sweet spice, chalky minerals and crushed violets. This is rich and potent, delivering masses of fleshy red and black berry fruits that drench the palate, yet balance is well-maintained by salty minera...

From the importer: "The owner, Piero Lanza, believes in an almost fanatical attention to vineyard work. His goal is to set the stage for healthy vines, and ultimately, beautiful wines, by caring for the land holistically, in rhythm with the seasons, and as custodian for its natural biodiversity and richness. The results are healthy grapes with the highest degree of concentration and ripeness, perfectly reflective of their unique Tuscan terroir. The wines produced combine a richness and concentration of fruit, acidity, and tannin—indispensable to the wine...

97 points Vinous: "The 2017 Percarlo is an exotic beauty. Rich and sumptuous in the glass, with tremendous fruit density, the 2017 packs a serious punch. Succulent dark cherry, plum, licorice, menthol and earthy notes emerge over time, but the tannins remain imposing. Like the Baròncole, the Percarlo needs cellaring to be at its best. The 2017 was much more forthcoming from barrel. It will reveal all of that sumptuousness once again, but not soon. (AG)" (08/2020) 95 points Wine Spectator: "This red is saturated with blackberry, black currant, violet, i...

93 points Vinous: "The 2019 Rosso di Montalcino Ginestreto takes things to a more classic place with dried strawberries, dusty florals, cloves and nuances of worn leather. It washes across the palate with a textural wave of ripe red and black fruits, supported by brisk acidity, as a salty core of minerals and fine tannins slowly saturates. The 2019 finishes structured and long, reminding me more of Brunello than Rosso, while leaving hints of licorice and minty herbs to linger on. The Ginestreto impresses once again with its amazing combination of fruit, ...

94 points James Suckling: "Flowers, such as rose petals, tile and stone with some cedar and ash, all complementing the cherry character. It’s full-bodied and chewy with a tight, solid palate and finish. A little chewy now, but it will soften nicely with bottle age. " (11/2020) 93 points Wine Advocate: "The Franco Pacenti 2016 Brunello di Montalcino opens to tart cherry and cassis with more layers of spice, licorice and balsam herb at the back. The wine unfolds to show a classic interpretation of the vintage with a mid-weight mouthfeel and bright acidit...

Full-bodied, tight and structured. Massively dense yet agile and bright. It goes on for minutes. Needs at least three or four years to soften. Try in 2020." (10/2015) 99 points Wine Advocate: "This is a towering achievement. It is delightful on every level. 2019 Poggerino "Bugialla" Chianti Classico Riserva
Top Pick!
92 points Vinous: "The 2019 Chianti Classico Riserva Bugialla is a dark, powerful wine. Black cherry, incense, leather and spice give this virile Riserva plenty of complexity. All that is missing is perhaps a bit of freshness. Even so, the 2019 is impressive, especially in terms of its depth and overall substance. AG" (06/2022)

Full-bodied yet remains agile with firm, gently chewy tannins and bright acidity. Try in 2025." (12/2022) 93 points Wine Spectator: "Though vibrant and packed with intense raspberry, cherry, hibiscus and earth flavors, this red is also solidly built, with dense tannins leaving a strong grip on the long, crisp finish. This has plenty to like; just be patient. Best from 2026 through 2045. (BS)" (06/2023) 92 points Vinous: "The 2...

(04/2022) 93 points Wine Advocate: "The 2020 Bolgheri Rosso Villa Donoratico shows ripe fruit and a greater oak presence with spice, tar, tobacco and smoked cedarwood. This full-bodied wine could almost be a Bolgheri Superiore, thanks to the depth, richness and importance of its flavor profile. (ML)" (07/2022) 92 points Wine Enth...

95 points James Suckling: "Very floral on the nose with plums, rose petals and freshly sliced porcini mushrooms. The palate is tight and compressed with beautiful ripe fruit, wet earth and cool, stone flavors. A structured and impressive wine." (09/2019) 95 points Wine Advocate: "This is a terrific wine and one of the new releases from Montalcino that I happily include on a short list of top recommendations. The Argiano 2015 Brunello di Montalcino shows a very lively bouquet that is already singing despite the young age of this new release. The wine op...

96 points Vinous: "The 2018 Geremia is stellar. A wine of energy and delineation, Geremia is all about persistence more than volume in 2018. Blueberry, blackberry, lavender, licorice and scorched earth abound. In 2018, Geremia is a wine of tension and reserve. It's best days are far off in the future. I wouldn't dream of touching a bottle anytime soon. (AG) " (06/2022) 95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Composed of 82% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2018 Geremia is deep ruby, with a sweet perfume of graphite, fresh violets, and kirsch. It is full bo...

94 points Vinous: "The 2012 Vin Santo is compelling, as it so often is. Caramel, honey, brown sugar and kirsch are some of the many notes that build effortlessly. In 2012, the Vin Santo is not quite as opulent as it can be, but that is probably a good thing in this case. (AG) " (06/2023)
Price: $84.99

92 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2018 Brunello Di Montalcino reveals layers of cherry licorice, leather, dark minerals, and smoke. It is full-bodied, with iron richness, and meaty red plum, mocha, and dried herbs. It has ripe tannins, with a fresh lift of acidity, and is a nicely balanced wine with a fairly long finish. Drink 2025-2035. (AF) " (03/2023)

90 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2019 Chianti Classico Primocolle is lifted with ripe red cherry, iron-rich earth, and fresh leather. Medium-bodied, with some meaty iron minerality on the palate, it has fine tannins and a broad richness. The palate is dry and savory, with tangerine, turned soil, and fresh salinity. This lovely red is drinking beautifully now and will continue to drink well over the next 6-8 years. It is ripe with cherry candy and dusty earth as well as fine tannins and a clean finish. It remains fresh without any harsh edges and offers fine-grained tannins and a silky mouthfeel. This is a highly pleasurable and easy-drinking style to enjoy over the next 5-6 years. (AF) " (03/2023)

Decanter: "Earthy and rustic, with energy and drive on the palate. Some cedar and spice characters, and generous alcohol. (Panel Tasting)" (06/2019) Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Rosso di Montalcino is a handy and versatile wine, especially if you are planning any outdoor barbecuing events. This wine offers good intensity, but it stays focused at the same time. It seems intent on delivering the basics of Sangiovese without going overboard in any exaggerated way. Some occasions do call for a wine that can pair seamlessly with food without becoming too much o...

96 points Wine Advocate: "From an iconic vintage that gave generously to all grape varieties across almost all of Tuscany, this wine ranks high on the Fontodi billboard of greatest hits. The 2010 Flaccianello della Pieve is a rock solid wine that sits firm and begins to peel slowly, each delicate layer at a time. It puts on quite a show with a solid core of dark fruit followed by smoke, spice, tar, licorice and delicate blue flower. On previous tastings of this vintage, I had scored it 97 and 97+ points, respectively. I'm going down one point at this sit...

94 points Decanter: "Owner Gianni Pignattai farms 3.7 hectares of Brunello vineyards distributed among three separate plots, which he blends together. Following an admirable effort in the challenging 2017 vintage, Pietroso follows up with a beautiful 2018. It exudes pure red cherry and rose underscored by new leather and a suggestion of vanilla. Midweight and understated, this well-parsed Brunello offers just enough to sink your teeth into. The tannins are silky yet assertive, jaunty acidity elevates the red berry flavours, and the finish rings out with ...

95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Taking on a more red-fruited profile, the 2018 Brunello Di Montalcino pours a ruby hue with a bit of garnet. Aromas of red cherry, wild herbs, orange peel, and pepper are followed by a medium-bodied red with an elegant concentration of raspberry, pressed roses, fine tannins, fresh acidity, stony earth, and clove. 99 points Vinous: "The 2018 d'Alceo is a wild, exotic wine. Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot come together in a wine that is sumptuous, layered and exceptionally beautiful. Inky blue/purplish fruit, sage, mint, lavender and chocolate are some of the many notes that take shape. The 2018 was fermented in cement then aged 12 months in a combination of 500L tonneaux and barriques. This really blooms with time. Such a smooth delivery on the palate, tannins glide across the tongue giving the sweet strawberry, raspberry and plum fruit time to expand in the mouth as the acidity gives a mouthwatering aspect. This is very much on the lively and vibrant fruit - shouting loudly about its energy. Feels extremely well made, clear definition, finesse and balance. Such a gorgeous fruit profile, the high-toned strawberry and cherry, bright and pierc...

99 points Decanter: "To be honest I gave the Sassicaia 1985 a 100 points at the same tasting, but those notes have already been published, and it’s a vintage that has been celebrated plenty of times. Both bottles were from one of the standout tastings of the year – in Rome, a vertical of Sassicaia dating back over five decades. This 2006 has guts and glory, there is stuffing here. The exotic heat comes through like a pan-seared filet steak, nothing more than a flash fire that gives way to succulence. More exoticism with the dancing array of flavours, fro...
