Cognac

Cognac

Cognac is named after the town of Cognac in France. It's a brandy produced in the region surrounding the town and among our favorite spirits. Three grape varieties are used in making Cognac: Ugni Blanc, Colombard, and Folle Blanche. Charente is divided into different districts with different geological and physical characteristics. A worthy but less famous brother of Cognac, Armagnac is actually much older than Cognac. The first document mentioning it dates from the fifteenth century (1461). It is produced in the region of Gascony. Find Armagnac here.

Daniel Bouju Tres Vieux "Brut de Fut" Premier Cru de Cognac Grand Champagne Cognac 750ml
Top Pick!
The unprecedented Tres Vieux Brut de Fut is one of the most memorable and unique offerings from any producer in Cognac. Bouju is well known for speaking out in the region against the use of additives and has carved out a niche as one of the few Grand Champagne producers willing to offer unfiltered, uncut, full-strength cognac. This brandy is the house's top offering and represents some of the oldest stocks with a minimum age of 40 years. The color is dark like coffee and when we inquired about that insanely dark color, Bouju explained that long term agin...

Ragnaud-Sabourin "Fontevieille #35" K&L Exclusive Cognac (750ml)
Top Pick!
The vineyards of Ragnaud-Sabourin stretch far over the hills in Grande Champagne, 33 hectares of Ugni Blanc, with a bit of Folle Blanche, as far as the eye can see. This estate is known throughout France for having the goods, and we couldn't have been more impressed after visiting the property. Today the estate is run by Annie Sabourin, who is the daughter of the late Marcel Ragnaud, and she makes sure every drop lives up to the property's reputation. The collection of Ragnaud-Sabourin selections we tasted were spellbinding and easily one of the most pol...

Daniel Bouju "Royal" Brut De Fut Grand Champagne Cognac (750ml)
Top Pick!
The wonderful Daniel Bouju has become renowned to our customers for his light and ultra fresh "Fine Saveur" offering. But what makes Bouju famous in Europe and around the world are actually his ultra old, unfiltered, cask-strength offerings. The Royal Brut de Fut is one of the most sought-after and well regarded high proof Cognacs made today, but it's been years since we've seen it in California. Nothing is added nor taken away from this high proof blend with a minimum of 15 years of age. It's dark, dry, powerful stuff, but not without a nuanced elegance...

One of the best meals we've ever had. We were sitting at the house of Gerald and Claudine at Dudognon, in front of their alembic still, a fire crackling in the corner, and plenty of good wine on the table. After eating a multi-course melee of French cuisine, they brought out their most special elixir for dessert -- the 60 year old "Paulin" Cognac. What makes Dudognon such a special producer is the fact that they're the only Cognac distiller that with 100% certainty does not add caramel coloring, sugar or boise to their brandy. To see the dark amber color...

The vineyards of Ragnaud-Sabourin stretch far over the hills in Grand Champage, 33 hectares of Ugni Blanc with a bit of Folle Blanche as far as the eye can see. Today the estate is run by Annie Sabourin, who is the daughter of the late Marcel Ragnaud, and she makes sure every drop lives up to the property's reputation. Ragnaud-Sabourin "Florilège" K&L Exclusive 1er Cru Grand Champagne Cognac (750ml)
Top Pick!
The incredible estate located in Ambleville on the finest terroir that cognac has to offer was brought to prominence by the famous Marcel Ragnaud. Marcel perpetuated a tradition of craftsmanship that continues today, now run by his granddaughter Annie Sabourin. His father, Gaston Briand, was the head of cognac grape growers association and split his 100 hectar estate between brothers Marcel and Raymond. The estate is unique for cultivating all 8 legal varietals and this product contains 60% Ugni Blanc and 40% old vine Folle Blanche. They claim that this ...

Bach Gabrielsen Tre Kors is a lovely blend of Grande and Petite Champagne (25%) and Fins Bois (75%) grapes. Aged in Limousin oak for a minimum of 2 years, this Cognac takes on a remarkable amber hue despite the minimal usage of caramel and boise additions. The inclusion of young Grande Champagne fruit keeps the spirit extremely bright and fresh providing a lively acidity without sacrificing the rich, round, and soft palate. This combination of little sugar, fruit forward flavors, rich texture, and extraordinarily affordable price, makes this the perfect ...

91 points Vinous: "Solid, good-value 10-year-old from Grande Champagne. Golden in color, offering bright, warm notes of apricot, plum and orange peel, with toasted oak, baking spice and bit of toffee coming on the palate. But the overall effect is light and lean. (JW) " (09/2019) Wine Spectator: "Cognac Dudognon Réserve Grande Champagne reflects the very core of Grande Champagne's potential in its silky, layered glory. " (12/2014) K&L Notes: The Dudognon family has produced Cognac in the small town of Lignieres-Sonneville since 1776. This region is t...

Dudognon "Vieille Reserve" Grand Champagne Cognac (750ml)
Top Pick!
95 points Vinous: "Age makes all the difference in Grande Champagne, and at 20 years old, this Cognac has begun to show its elegance and depth. Pronounced aromas of dried rose, peach jam, marmalade, toasted nuts and the beginning of rancio glide softly on to a palate of baked, spiced pear, warm pastry, and a savory note on the finish. My favorite of the Dudognon collection. (JW)" (09/2019) K&L Notes: The Dudognon Family has another winner with their Vielle Reserve 20-year-old cognac. It is exclusively from Ugni Blanc grapes grown in Grande Champagne. T...

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "In the glass, this VSOP Cognac has a topaz hue with orange highlights. The inviting aroma is warm, honeyed and mellow. The silky palate echoes that honey and layers it with vanilla and baking spice, finishing long with citrus, spice and a hint of dried apricot. Sip or mix. (KN)" (12/2019) 91 points Vinous: "Pierre Ferrand doesn’t use VS, VSOP, or XO on its labels, but this flagship bottling from Grande Champagne has an average age of around 10 years and is about 10% Colombard along with the Ugni Blanc. Golden honey in color,...

Françoise Voyer VS Grand Champagne Cognac (750ml)
Back In Stock!
This wonderful VS is a benchmark for the category. Open, fresh and fragrant we're definitely on the more fruity and floral side of things, but a tiny hint of stewed apricots and oak spice poke through to give this lovely affordable Grand Champagne cognac the perfect balance. Voyer have owned 1er Cru vineyards in the most prestigious parts of Grand Champagne, Verriere and Ambleville, for 5 generations. While they're known for old ultra rare cognac, they're not ignoring the entry level like so many other producers in the region. They could sell this same E...

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "This pours a bright amber color, with restrained but beautiful aromas of white flowers, orange, peach and honey. On the palate, it's full-bodied, with bitter orange peel and stone fruit flavors, with lingering vanilla and oak. The alcohol feels relatively balanced, but it creeps up on you. This needs dilution, so use it in punches as intended and you'll be fine. *Best Buy* (KN)" (12/2013) K&L Notes: 94 points, "Highly Recommended," from the 2012 Ultimate Spirit Challenge.

We've discovered a tiny remaining allotment of rare, single-cask Borderies Cognacs. Barrels #22 and #151 present a particularly interesting comparison. Both were distilled in 1992 and separated at birth. Barrel #22 found its way into a very humid cellar, while barrel #151 was aged in a dry cellar. They were bottled 22 years later at cask strength and without chill filtration or coloring/sugar. The result is an incredible study in how Cognac ages and the effects of the aging environment. Barrel #22, the Wet Cellar, offers unparalleled elegance. At a cask ...

The pristine condition of this stunningly copper-colored brandy is inspiring - it's gorgeous. In the nose there are delicate fragrances of spice, sesame seed, light oak, and baked pears; seven more minutes in the glass bring out pineapple, light toffee, milk, and brown sugar. The palate entry is elegant, composed, and moderately sweet in more of an oaky than a fruity way; by the midpalate stage, there's flavor evidence of ripe pear, white grapes, cake frosting, Oloroso sherry, orange peel, and dark honey. End up sugary sweet, satiny textured, and long...

Hine XO Cigar Reserve Coganc (750ml)
Top Pick!
Produced in collaboration with Hunters & Frankau of London - the exclusive UK distributor of Havana cigars. This blend of Grande and Petite Champagne, which gives it a floral character, and Fine Bois, which adds fruit, has a minimum age of 15 years. It's full bodied with flavors of maple, hazelnut, and a smoky tobacco note, with an acidity that refreshes the palate and enhances the combined flavors. It is the only expression of Hine to include Fins Bois.

96 points Vinous: "Delamain’s youngest offering, at 20 to 25 years old, is also one of the standard-bearers of Grande Champagne (the blend was created in the 1920s and hasn’t changed). Light amber, with a delightful nose full of pear, marmalade, quince and orange blossom. The pear and quince carry onto the palate, where a distinctive membrillo-like flavor emerges — a unique note I find in a number of Delamain expressions. There’s gentle spice and warm citrus on the palate, gliding to a long, delicate finish. The definition of elegance. (JW)" (09/2019) ...

93 points Vinous: "A fascinating 40-year-old spirit – Speyside by way of the tropics. Expressive aromas and flavors of both fleshy exotic fruit and salty sea air reminiscent of Scotch, plus a healthy dose of rancio. On the palate, it’s expansive and amiable, but followed by a long, serious, very dry finish full of astringent grilled walnut. Unique, but possibly a little confounding. 100 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Tesseron family, who made their fortune in Cognac (but are probably best known by wine lovers as the proprietor of Pontet Canet and Lafon Rochet) released tiny quantities of single vintage Cognacs. Although French law does not permit a vintage date to be used, this is all from 1929, and is very limited in availability. I'm not an expert on Cognac, but anything this smooth, silky, potent, and aromatic, is truly great stuff. It is about as ethereal Cognac as anyone could ever hope to drink. (Hedonist's Gazette...

Sazerac's history in Cognac dates back to the late 1700s. In the mid 1800s it was one of the largest Cognac producers and available throughout the world. It is the brand for which the famous Sazerac cocktail was named and of course shares a name with it's current owner - the Sazerac company which includes powerhouse brands like Buffalo Trace in its portfolio. The "Finest Original" bottling is a minimum of 7 years old with spirit dating back to the 1960s in the blend. It focuses on Colombard and Folle Blanche rather than the ubiquitous Ugni Blanc, staying...

The house of A. Edmond Audry was founded in 1878 by the great-great-grandfather of the current owner. In the early 1950s, the Audry Company stopped selling cognac. However, some very old stocks were held back in reserve in the hopes that Audry would one day rise again to the fore. That day came in 1978 when Bernard Boisson, a lawyer by training, decided to resurrect the family tradition that had remained dormant for four decades. The family stopped distilling in 1974, so Audry is made from blends of the original reserve and a few lots bought from a small...

Eye-catching topaz/honey color; dazzling purity. The opening smells include pears, apples, and soda water; additional air contact releases delicate, fruity scents of banana in brandy, cotton candy, maple, and new oak. The palate entry is light, sweet, and grapy ripe; the midpalate is chewier in texture, more honeyed in taste than the entry phase and tropical fruit-like. Finishes satiny smooth, sugary/piney sweet, and medium-long. Nice job. - Spirit Journal - F. Paul Pacult 40% ABV

Comadon's celebration of their 200th anniversary makes full use of their ability to select the finest casks available for maturation. After distillation on the lees the eau de vie was matured in damp cellars in Boutiers St-Trojan in some of the rarest casks available. The assemblage comes from Grande Champagne, Fins Bois, and Bon Bois and was married in casks that previously aged Grande Champagne. From there it was finished at Château Desmirail in ex-Ch.Margaux barrels. The ex-wine barrel was selected and supplied directly by Denis Lurton who personally ...

93 points Vinous: "This experimental blend of seven- to 20-year-old Grande Champagne is finished for 12 to 18 months in Banyuls casks. Light copper in color, it’s bright and fruity, with flavors and aromas of fresh citrus and stone fruit, but there’s significant rancio throughout. Banyuls is all about rancio, so that it makes sense, but the palate is very unique, almost the opposite of what’s expected: the spice and rancio come up front, followed by a finish of raisins and dates. A fascinating and tasty experiment. (42.3% abv) (JW)" (09/2019) K&L Notes...

On palate, Louis XIII offers long and intensely woody flavors; additional layers of flavor, including figs, dates, prunes, dried apricot and vanilla, are featured at midpalate. Finishes elegantly, warm, smooth and more oaky than fruity succulent. Only minor rancio."
