Cognac

Cognac

Cognac is named after the town of Cognac in France. It's a brandy produced in the region surrounding the town and among our favorite spirits. Three grape varieties are used in making Cognac: Ugni Blanc, Colombard, and Folle Blanche. Charente is divided into different districts with different geological and physical characteristics. A worthy but less famous brother of Cognac, Armagnac is actually much older than Cognac. The first document mentioning it dates from the fifteenth century (1461). It is produced in the region of Gascony. Find Armagnac here.

Top Pick!
The vineyards of Ragnaud-Sabourin stretch far over the hills in Grand Champagne, 33 hectares of Ugni Blanc, with a bit of Folle Blanche, as far as the eye can see. This estate is known throughout France for having the goods, and we couldn't have been more impressed after visiting the property. Today the estate is run by Annie Sabourin, who is the daughter of the late Marcel Ragnaud, and she makes sure every drop lives up to the property's reputation. The collection of Ragnaud-Sabourin selections we tasted were spellbinding and easily one of the most poli...

The vineyards of Ragnaud-Sabourin stretch far over the hills in Grand Champage, 33 hectares of Ugni Blanc with a bit of Folle Blanche as far as the eye can see. This estate is known throughout France for having the goods, and we couldn't have been more impressed after visiting the property this past spring. Today the estate is run by Annie Sabourin, who is the daughter of the late Marcel Ragnaud, and she makes sure every drop lives up to the property's reputation. 99 points Vinous: "One of the prized expressions in Grande Champagne — indeed, in all of Cognac. Aged 35 to 50 years, yet light amber in color. The incredibly complex nose is at first warm and affable, presenting pretty dried flowers, rose petals and roasted walnuts, but as you return to the glass, the aromas open up with a tropical explosion of pineapple, mango and guava. Wows the palate with so much going on at once, both profound and hedonistic. Lots of fiery spice and pepper at first, which is then balanced and rounded out by more opulent tropical fr...

1994 Bourgoin 22 Year-Old "Brut de Fut" Microbarrique Single Barrel Cask Strength Cognac (375ml) (Previously $100) (Previously $100)
Top Pick!
Bourgoin Cognac is part of a small group of hyper artisanal micro-producers bucking the big business trends in the Charentes. The single estate is located near Tarsac in the Commune of Saint Saturnin. They see themselves as revolutionaries in this complex industry, but not in the sense that they're bringing something new or different. Instead, they espouse a return to simpler, more authentic ways of making cognac. To return, reestablish, renew, restore as in our planet's revolution around the sun. The special expression of this unique place is the result...

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "The complex bouquet features scents of holiday spice, vanilla bean, marzipan, candied almond, honey, old sweet oak, and dark toffee. The palate entry is fruity and spirity warm; the midpalate includes tastes of honey, orange peel, baked pear, cinnamon, vanilla, cocoa, and rancio. Finishes as elegantly and assertively as it began." (11/2006) K&L Notes: Delamain Cognac: "This blend of extremely old Grande Champagne cognacs has benefited from maximum barrel ageing. It expresses all the nobility of the truly great eaux-de-vie w...

1992 Comandon Borderies Single Barrel #151 Dry Cellar Cask Strength Cognac (750ml)
Top Pick!
We've discovered a tiny remaining allotment of rare, single-cask Borderies Cognacs. Barrels #22 and #151 present a particularly interesting comparison. Both were distilled in 1992 and separated at birth. Barrel #22 found its way into a very humid cellar, while barrel #151 was aged in a dry cellar. They were bottled 22 years later at cask strength and without chill filtration or coloring/sugar. The result is an incredible study in how Cognac ages and the effects of the aging environment. Barrel #151, aged in a dry environment, shows much more sweet wood i...

95 points Vinous: "Age makes all the difference in Grande Champagne, and at 20 years old, this Cognac has begun to show its elegance and depth. Pronounced aromas of dried rose, peach jam, marmalade, toasted nuts and the beginning of rancio glide softly on to a palate of baked, spiced pear, warm pastry, and a savory note on the finish. My favorite of the Dudognon collection. (40% abv) (JW)" (09/2019) K&L Notes: The Dudognon Family has another winner with their Vielle Reserve 20-year-old cognac. It is exclusively from Ugni Blanc grapes grown in Grande Ch...

A PM Spirits Project "Hommage a Yves et Jean-Noel Pelletan" Cask Strength Small Batch Cognac (750ml) (Previously $400) (Previously $400)
Top Pick!
PM Spirits is a premier importer of ultra-fine, boutique distillates. The PM Spirits Projects are Scotch whisky and Cognac selections bottled under the importers own label, acquired from many of the long-time friends and associates of PM Spirits founder Nicolas Palazzi. The "Hommage a Yves et Jean-Noel Pelletan" is a nod both to the beginnings of PM Spirits and to the two men who were most instrumental in opening the doors of the region to Palazzi when he was first setting out. The Pelletans are/were master coopers of the highest order, only two of a han...

The pristine condition of this stunningly copper-colored brandy is inspiring - it's gorgeous. In the nose there are delicate fragrances of spice, sesame seed, light oak, and baked pears; seven more minutes in the glass bring out pineapple, light toffee, milk, and brown sugar. The palate entry is elegant, composed, and moderately sweet in more of an oaky than a fruity way; by the midpalate stage, there's flavor evidence of ripe pear, white grapes, cake frosting, Oloroso sherry, orange peel, and dark honey. End up sugary sweet, satiny textured, and long...

This single barrel of eau-de-vie was acquired by Nicolas Palazzi over 10 years ago. It was already at least 10 years of age at the time with some eau-de-vie slightly older, around 15 years old, all distilled at a renowned single estate. With the help of the incredibly knowledgeable Jean-Noel Pelletan, a local artisanal cooper, Nicolas spent the next ten years researching age old techniques to bring the most out of this cask. Pelletan has an encyclopedic knowledge of all things cognac and a vast collection of historic technical manuscripts. It's the secre...

Golden in color, offering bright, warm notes of apricot, plum and orange peel, with toasted oak, baking spice and bit of toffee coming on the palate. But the overall effect is light and lean. (40% abv) (JW) " (09/2019) Wine Spectator: "Cognac Dudognon Réserve Grande Champagne reflects the very core of Grande Champagne's potential in its silky, layered glory. 90 points Wine Enthusiast: "This pours a bright amber color, with restrained but beautiful aromas of white flowers, orange, peach and honey. On the palate, it's full-bodied, with bitter orange peel and stone fruit flavors, with lingering vanilla and oak. The alcohol feels relatively balanced, but it creeps up on you. This needs dilution, so use it in punches as intended and you'll be fine. *Best Buy* (KN)" (12/2013) K&L Notes: 94 points, "Highly Recommended," from the 2012 Ultimate Spirit Challenge.

94 points Vinous: "It’s rare to find a VSOP made solely from Borderies, and the limited-release Camus Family Reserve is a unique bottling. The nose is lively and complex, offering dried fruit, candied citrus and even notes of pineapple cake, but there’s also a fascinating hint of almost rhum-agricole-like grassiness and burnt sugarcane. Delicate on the palate, featuring dried apricot, orange peel and cinnamon, and notes of struck stone and flint throughout. Beautiful, intriguing VSOP and good value. (KN)" (12/2013) 91 points Vinous: "Pierre Ferrand doesn’t use VS, VSOP, or XO on its labels, but this flagship bottling from Grande Champagne has an average age of around 10 years and is about 10% Colombard along with the Ugni Blanc. Golden honey in color, with a floral nose of violet and rose and a bit of fresh-cut flow...

93 points Vinous: "A fascinating 40-year-old spirit – Speyside by way of the tropics. Expressive aromas and flavors of both fleshy exotic fruit and salty sea air reminiscent of Scotch, plus a healthy dose of rancio. On the palate, it’s expansive and amiable, but followed by a long, serious, very dry finish full of astringent grilled walnut. Unique, but possibly a little confounding. Bach Gabrielsen Tre Kors is a lovely blend of Grande and Petite Champagne (25%) and Fins Bois (75%) grapes. Aged in Limousin oak for a minimum of 2 years, this Cognac takes on a remarkable amber hue despite the minimal usage of caramel and boise additions. The inclusion of young Grande Champagne fruit keeps the spirit extremely bright and fresh providing a lively acidity without sacrificing the rich, round, and soft palate. This combination of little sugar, fruit forward flavors, rich texture, and extraordinarily affordable price, makes this the perfect ...

The Beau family is one of the oldest artisanal Cognac distillers in the Segonzac, the heart of the Grande Champagne region. Samuel Beau started distilling in 1895, bottling and selling his brandies under his own name, which at that time was unusual. To this day, the Beau family still takes meticulous care of their 200-plus acres of Grande Champagne fruit, most of which is Ugni Blanc with a tiny fraction of Colombard. The VS is an outstanding deal in Cognac for a brandy of its quality, showing zesty stone fruit on the nose with more pronounced flavors on ...

Eye-catching topaz/honey color; dazzling purity. The opening smells include pears, apples, and soda water; additional air contact releases delicate, fruity scents of banana in brandy, cotton candy, maple, and new oak. The palate entry is light, sweet, and grapy ripe; the midpalate is chewier in texture, more honeyed in taste than the entry phase and tropical fruit-like. Finishes satiny smooth, sugary/piney sweet, and medium-long. Nice job. - Spirit Journal - F. Paul Pacult 40% ABV

This wonderful VS is a benchmark for the category. Open, fresh and fragrant we're definitely on the more fruity and floral side of things, but a tiny hint of stewed apricots and oak spice poke through to give this lovely affordable Grand Champagne cognac the perfect balance. Voyer have owned 1er Cru vineyards in the most prestigious parts of Grand Champagne, Verriere and Ambleville, for 5 generations. While they're known for old ultra rare cognac, they're not ignoring the entry level like so many other producers in the region. They could sell this same E...

96 points Vinous: "Delamain’s youngest offering, at 20 to 25 years old, is also one of the standard-bearers of Grande Champagne (the blend was created in the 1920s and hasn’t changed). Light amber, with a delightful nose full of pear, marmalade, quince and orange blossom. The pear and quince carry onto the palate, where a distinctive membrillo-like flavor emerges — a unique note I find in a number of Delamain expressions. There’s gentle spice and warm citrus on the palate, gliding to a long, delicate finish. The definition of elegance. (40% abv) (JW)" (0...

Vignobles Grateaud "Essence des Borderies" Borderies Cognac (750ml)

Even richer and nuttier than its counterpart. The Essence Des Borderies is aptly named. Anyone studying Cognac will want a bottle of this to lock in on what exactly makes Borderies unique. Rarely will you find an expression at this proof with this kind of power.

Pierre Ferrand "Selection Des Anges" Grande Champagne 1er Cru du Cognac (750ml)

95 points Vinous: "One of the more consistent middle-aged expressions of Grande Champagne. Complex, with some rancio, but approachable. Brilliant copper in color. The very fruity nose offers pear and peach along with notes of black tea and dry hay. Soft and unctuous in the mouth, featuring candied fruit, saffron and cedar, but very fresh at the midpalate, with a long finish of hazelnut and grilled walnuts. A good introduction to Cognac’s higher end. (40% abv) (JW) " (09/2019) 94 points Wine Enthusiast: "This 'selection of the angels' offers warm, entic...

Finishes elegantly, warm, smooth and more oaky than fruity succulent. Only minor rancio." Vignobles Grateaud "Bouquet des Borderies" Borderies Cognac (750ml)
New!
High proof Borderies from a small grower producer who has been making Cognac for 5 generations? Yep. 93 points Vinous: "This experimental blend of seven- to 20-year-old Grande Champagne is finished for 12 to 18 months in Banyuls casks. Light copper in color, it’s bright and fruity, with flavors and aromas of fresh citrus and stone fruit, but there’s significant rancio throughout. Banyuls is all about rancio, so that it makes sense, but the palate is very unique, almost the opposite of what’s expected: the spice and rancio come up front, followed by a finish of raisins and dates. A fascinating and tasty experiment. (42.3% abv) (JW)" (09/2019) K&L Notes...
