Port

Port

Port is a fortified wine made by stopping the fermentation with brandy. The result is a heavy sweet wine, most often red, that is dense, rich and high in alcohol. Port is made all over the world with some great results in Australia and South Africa, but the most famous of these dessert wines come from Portugal. The great port houses (or lodges) below are located along the Duoro River on the steep slate slopes high above the valley floor. There are several styles of port, including Ruby, Tawny, Vintage Character, Late Bottle Vintage, Colheita, and Single Quinta. Vintage ports are made in special years that the houses declare. 93 points Wine Advocate: "Graham is another great port house, producing one of the deepest-colored and sweetest styles of vintage port. Along with Taylor and Fonseca, Graham has probably been the most consistent producer of great port in the post- World War II era. Their tawnys are quite good rather than exceptional, but their vintage ports are truly sublime and sumptuous." (12/1988) 91 points Wine Spectator: "Medium ruby-red. Aromas of milk chocolate, plum, mint and violet. Full-bodied, with medium sweetness and lots of berry and cherry fruit. Very fr...

93 points Decanter: "One of very few organic Ports. Exuberant dark cherry and ripe cassis – big, bold and upfront fruit. Firm, ripe peppery tannins and a long finish. Reserve Ports do not get better than this. (RM)" (10/2014) 92 points Wine Advocate: "The Terra Prima Organic Port is just terrific. The nose is so fresh and well defined with blackcurrant fruit infused with faint touches of mandarin, dark cherries, fresh dates and liquorice. The palate is nicely balanced with slightly tarry black fruit. It offers lifted acidity and a spirituous nature wit...

91 points Vinous: "The 1980 Taylor's Vintage Port has a deep, clear garnet colour. The nose is very backward, quite austere and conservative with notes of cherry and raspberry leaf, a touch of cigar box developing with aeration. It perhaps lacks a little joie-de-vivre, especially when compared to vintages in the 1970s. The palate is attractive though, with notes of raspberry, plum, white pepper, blood orange and a touch of apricot. This 1980 has good acidity but plays it safe, unwilling to take chances. Yet there is perceptible lushness on the finish wit...

93 points James Suckling: "Beautiful sweet berries with walnut, toffee and caramel undertones on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied with medium sweetness and a chocolate and toffee aftertaste. A richer style of 10-year-old and delicious. " (07/2021) 91 points Wine Spectator: "This has a nice racy edge to the mix of slightly dried red cherry and raspberry fruit, backed by red tea and singed vanilla. Shows good tension from start to finish. Drink now. 500 cases imported. (JM, Web only-2023)" 90 points Wine Advocate: "The NV 10 Year Old Tawny Port was...

97 points Decanter: "Probably the best wine from a good, ripe though rather variable vintage: still deep at the centre with a thin tawny rim; lovely ripe plummy aromas, open but still brooding with more to reveal; ripe and fleshy on the palate with glorious plum and cherry fruit backed by firm ripe tannins leading to a powerful finish. Ready to drink now and will keep and develop in bottle for another thirty years at least! (RM)" (09/2021) 96 points Wine Advocate: "Graham is the undisputed star and kingpin of the 1985 vintage ports. Yes, it is made in ...

91 points Wine Spectator: "Ruby-colored, with grape, dark chocolate and plum. Full and chewy. Tannins are still there and need to mellow. Medium-sweet and grapey. A little one-dimensional still, but impressive. (JS, Web-2008)" (02/2008) 90 points Wine Advocate: "This house makes rather restrained yet rich, flavorful vintage port and a very good tawny called Nimrod. Their vintage ports seem slow to develop … they have a unique mineral-scented character that gives them their own complexity and style. The 1985 is the sweetest and richest of the recent War...

99 points James Suckling: "Shows the intense ripeness of the vintage with hints of raisins and other dried fruits. Full-bodied, medium sweet and so very velvety. A big mouthful. Superb. Just starting to open." (01/2017) 95 points Wine Enthusiast: "An impressively concentrated wine, showing the hallmark Dow’s dry edge, but still full of ripe fruit, flavors of black plums and berries. It has weight and spice, but also a delicious perfume, layered through a smooth, opulent texture. (RV)" (10/2009) 94 points Wine Spectator: "This is on point now, with a ...

90 points Wine Advocate: "The 2017 Late Bottled Vintage Port is a typical Douro blend bottled in 2022 with a bar-top cork and 104 grams of residual sugar. This takes the lively Croft 2016, another of the Fladgate Group's houses, and adds a little depth. More importantly, it adds waves of flavor. It is well balanced and just delicious. The structure is average. On the other hand, while very well balanced, it is not quite as lively. Pick 'em. These can hold, but bottle development is not the same with filtered LBVs, so there is little reward to doing so. D...

91 points Wine Spectator: "Inviting, with plum cake and steeped raisin and plum notes laced with licorice snap and fruitcake accents. There's a solid spine for support, but this is approachable now. Try decanting or even giving a touch more time in the cellar. Drink now through 2026. (JM)" (07/2022) 90 points Wine Advocate: "The 2017 Late Bottled Vintage Port is a field blend bottled in 2022 with a bar-top cork and 113 grams per liter of residual sugar after six years in cask. (There will be no 2016 Graham's LBV.) Elegant in the mid-palate (unlike its ...

97 points Wine Advocate: "The NV 50 Year Old Tawny Port is a field blend bottled with a bar-top cork in 2022 and with 158 grams of residual sugar. Mature, with dark chocolate nuances, this is rich, deep and sensationally delicious. The concentration is exceptional too. Then, there's the long, long finish, filled with fruit and sugar. It is irresistible, in addition to being nuanced and complex. It's young enough so that it is never just a curiosity. The fruit is certainly not cracking. (MS)" (08/2022)

95 points Wine Advocate: "The 1994 Vintage Port is going to be re-released. It has about 100 grams per liter of residual sugar. With a big eucalyptus note up front, this is elegant in the mid-palate with controlled tannins. Sweet and easy in some ways, this is readily approachable now, perhaps not at peak, but more expressive than the relatively brooding Dow's, also reviewed. The hint of caramel and raisins mixed with sugar makes this irresistible. It is sexy and intriguing. (MS)" (10/2016) 95 points Vinous: "The 1994 Graham’s Vintage Port, which incid...

94 points Wine Advocate: "The 1978 Colheita Tawny Port was bottled in 2015 with 119 grams per liter of residual sugar and a bar top cork (typical for the house). It is very graceful for its age, finishing with a wave of sweetness, fruit and sugar. Emphasizing the caramel more than the molasses, this is irresistibly delicious, but it becomes more complex and puts on weight as it airs and warms. The wine shows off its power and hints of Brandy on the rather tense finish, too. Overall, this is a beauty that becomes more impressive the longer you sit with it...

91 points Wine & Spirits: "Light amber-tawny in color, this wine is delicately balanced between freshness and age. There’s brisk, tart peach flavor along with more mature tones of pale berries and woodsy mushrooms. Hints of tobacco smoke add to the wine’s elegance." (12/2015) 91 points Wine Spectator: "Racy and fresh, with detailed green fig, dried cherry, incense and hazelnut notes. Offers a long, focused finish. (JM)" (06/2018) Wine Enthusiast: "This hits the sweet spot between fruit and wood-aging flavors. The red fruit tones have just begun to ra...

(01/2017) 93 points Vinous: "The 1985 Dow’s Vintage Port has a gorgeous, very pure bouquet with mulberry, leather, terracotta tiles on a warm day, and hints of clove all beautifully defined. The palate is very well balanced with supple tannin, lightly spiced on the entry, touches of liquorice and black pepper, curry powder and ginger with a very harmonious and long finish. Romariz "Latina" Reserve Tawny Port
New!
Romariz is a port house founded in the 1850's by Manoel da Rocha Romariz. It is a house that has done most of its business in Brazil and the other Portuguese colonies. They have always been known for their wood aged ports (Colheitas and Tawnies) and made only a small amount of vintage port. It is a blend of casks that range in age from 7 to 12 years. This is a blend that was originally designated for Brazil, hence the name. It has great complexity, layers of spicy dark fruits that are backed with a deep nutty rancio spectrum of flavors from the aging. ...

Wine Spectator: "Raspberry and red apple scents fill this generous Tawny with vibrant spice. It’s integrated, clean and rich, and will bring complexity to pork chops roasted with apricots." (12/2018) K&L Notes: I think we have found a new favorite, not only in the 10-year tawny category, but possibly in our entire fortified sweet wine collection. This delicious 10-year-old tawny from the house of Ferreira is a perfectly balanced rendition of the style. Aromas of sweet chai spices, confit of dark fruits, and hints of orange peel lead to a sumptuous pal...

Jancis Robinson: "Made from 50% Viosinho, 15% Gouveio, 15% Rabigato, 20% Malvasia Fina fermented separately, in tank on skins as for reds, and blended in January 2004. A very hot year when it was sometimes 30 °C at night. No acid correction. Neutral spirit at 77% alcohol cooled to 18–20 °C and added at three different times to preserve the aroma: when the must is 18%, then after five to seven days, and then in January to get the blend to 20%. Good mid-deep youthful colour; ripe, heady warm-country nose, similarly ripe and round on the palate, at the same time the fruit is well defined and focused with a touch of bitter chocolate intensity, well integrated dusty tannins with a ripe, supple finish. From the iconic port producers upriver from Porto in the Duoro region of Portugal, and a Certified B Corporation. Tasting notes from the producer: "STYLE: White Heights is a fragrant, high-grade, slightly drier white port produced from the top 10% of grapes from the high-altitude vineyards of the Favaios sub-region of the Douro Valley, giving it more acidity, freshness, and lift than other white ports. TASTING NOTES: Fresh tropical fruit flavours such as papaya and pineapple lead the way, supported by light aromas of honeysuckle. Crisp yellow plum and pe...

93 points Wine Advocate: "This is more mature in appearance than the -80 with a light brick rim. Again, the nose is tight and conservative with notes of raspberry leaf, plum, freshly tilled earth and dried fig. Perhaps it just lacks a little personality. The palate is more austere than the -80 but it has more concentration and structure, more masculine. Notes of blackberry, cassis, cherry- and black olive with a dash of white pepper on the finish. This is a quietly impressive Taylor's with a lovely, supple finish. Very fine. Tasted November 2007. (NM)" (...

The German Family named Kopke came from Hamburg to Lisbon in 1636. Two years later, in 1638, Christiano Kopke established himself in Oporto, as merchant and exporter of Portuguese products, and he started the export of Portuguese wines already produced in the region, as part of his business. When the Wine - then known as Portwine - was recognized, the House of Kopke which is today the oldest Portwine's export firm, was one of the leaders in the field. Through many generations, the company was run by several members of Kopke's family, obtaining an excelle...

Ferreira "Dona Antonia" 20 Year Old Tawny Port
Back In Stock!
98 points Decanter: "Quince marmalade on the nose and palate. Refined, soft and seamless with the merest dusting of tannin on the finish. Worthy Platinum Best in Category at the DWWA." (12/2016) K&L Notes: Ferreira's ports are some of the most impressive that we have tasted this season. Named by Wine & Spirits Magazine as one of the top producers of 2012, this historic house, which also produces the world renowned, ageworthy, and pricey "Barca Velha" reds, Ferreira is one of the great ambassadors of Port and Portuguese wines.

(KM)" (02/2014) 96 points Wine Enthusiast: "This is a very dry, firm wine that's solidly tannic but never harsh. This is still very deep and youthful in colour, wonderfully extrovert and opulent on the nose, showing mint and classic floral aromas. It's sweet, suave and fleshy on the palate, with voluptuous plum and berry fruit and lovely definition. The flesh masks the tannins, which rise in the mouth leading to a rich and powerful finish. 98 points Vinous: "The 1977 Taylor's Vintage Port is initially tight and conservative on the nose: strawberry, baked cherry, tobacco and wild hedgerow notes emerging but remaining tight-lipped. This needs a good decant! The palate is endowed with depth and concentration, very well balanced with an attractive crispness. Perhaps you could argue that it is a 'linear' and more 'correct' Taylor's compared to the 1970 and lacks some charm. But there is immense complexity here so it is more a case of a Port demanding a very long maturation in bottle. (NM)" (06/...

Caramelised oranges, dried apricot and fig take centre stage, with hints of café crème and toasted hazelnuts. Slinky, its gentle barley-sugar sweetness is cut with elegant acidity, making for a clean, controlled finish; 120g/L residual sugar. A seamless melange of glorious flavours. (RM)" (11/2021) 94 points James Suckling: "Dried cherry, iodine and peat with some watermelon. Hints of toffee and bark. Medium-to full-...

(07/2021) 95 points Wine Enthusiast: "Sandeman's long-standing reputation for aged tawny Port is confirmed by this wine. 92 points Wine Advocate: "Produced and bottled by Niepoort, this opaque purple-colored port is more backward and tannic than Niepoort's vintage wines. Impressively endowed, with a reticent, but promising nose of chocolate, blackberry fruit, truffles, and licorice, this full-bodied, massive, moderately sweet port should be cellared until 2000. It will age well for 20-30 years. Impressive! (RP)" (02/1995) Wine Spectator: "Ripe and roasted, medium-bodied and sweet, featuring round tannins and ripe fruit finish. (JS)" (06/1995)
