93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Slightly richer than the Charleston Sercial, the Boston Bual boasts knockout aromas of toasted nut oil, orange peel and hints of dark honey or maple syrup. Despite the extra weight and sweetness, it's not cloying at all the finish is mouthwatering and long. *Editors' Choice* (JC)" (11/2006) 93 points Wine Spectator: "Nutty aromas and flavors are filled with buttery notes in this plush and sweet style. Dried apricot and mango details add to the richness. Finishes with seductive smoke, dried beef and cocoa powder components. (...

95 points James Suckling: "This smells like apricot tarte tatin with notes of toasted nuts and caramelized bananas. Very crisp and concentrated this has tremendous energy in spite of the intense maturation character, the touch of sweetness pushed way into the background. Super-long finish that’s both rich and refreshing. Drink or hold. (SP)" (06/2023) 93 points Wine Advocate: "The NV Savannah Verdhelo Special Reserve (Rare Wine Company) is lovely, wafting from the glass with inviting aromas of fruitcake, warm spices, bitter orange, blanched almonds and...

94 points John Gilman: "I really like the Rare Wine Company’s Charleston Sercial bottling, which is one of my favorites in their fine historic Madeira bottling series. This wine only has one percent residual sugar, which with Madeira’s inherent tangy acids, comes across as quite dry, but beautifully buffered. The bouquet is a first class blend of white cherries, oranges, a touch of nutskin, fresh nutmeg, smoky overtones and a lovely base of soil. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and beautifully transparent, with a superb core, racy acids...

96 points James Suckling: "Dense and rich with a wide spectrum of baked apricot, caramelized orange and dried date character. And behind this is a huge structure with great acidity that keeps it very straight on the expansive yet energetic palate. Stunning length and nutty complexity at super-long finish. Drink or hold. (SP)" (06/2023) 92 points Vinous: "Medium amber. Powerfully scented bouquet combines cherry compote, cola, molasses, pipe tobacco and brown sugar. Lush and expansive in the mouth, offering sweet pit fruit and orange marmalade flavors an...

93 points Decanter: "Sercial is not the easiest grape to appreciate but this amber-coloured wine has lovely, lifted savoury-nutty aromas and clean spicy flavours with characteristic acidity. Text book Sercial: a wonderful aperitif or try a glass to accompany sushi and sashimi. (RM)" (09/2022) 92 points Wine Enthusiast: "As warmer weather approaches, this is a wine that should immediately come to mind at aperitif time. This bone-dry style, with its inimitable nutty character, is so fresh, so vibrant. It has some tannins, enlivening acidity giving a grea...

91 points Wine Advocate: "The NV Malmsey 10 Year Old, which was bottled end 2015, is bestowed with pungent clove and sandalwood aromas, holding the sweet caramel and toffee notes back and delivering something more resinous and almost marine-like. There is a peat-like element, as if it was matured on Islay rather than the middle of the Atlantic! The palate is medium-bodied and here that Malmsey-like richness and sweetness is (finally) delivered: touches of toffee apple, smoke, clove and dried orange peel. Perhaps more Bual-like in style, it displays fine ...

Jancis Robinson: "Mid amber-brown. Cooked fruit and a hint of something herbal like mint or angelica, with rich, Christmas-cake notes too. Medium-sweet sense, with a caramelised orange and dried apricot palate. Good length, caramelised hazelnut finish. Nicely done. 16/20 points (TJ)" (04/2021)

95 points Decanter: "Medium-rich in style (92 g/l residual sugar), the grapes for this wine originate from Calheta on the warmer south coast of Madeira. Mid-amber hue with gently smoked, yet rich savoury-spicy aromas – quite seductive and evocative. Lovely Elvas plum and quince marmalade richness with a spicy backdrop, balanced by fresh appley acidity. The long finish is akin to a gently cinnamon-spiced tarte tatin. Shows great complexity for a colheita. Glorious with savoury patés and stands up well to a curry, though equally good with caramelised orang...

90 points Decanter: "The driest style of Madeira (50g/l residual sugar) from grapes grown near Seixal on the cool north coast of Madeira. Mid-amber colour with gently lifted, spiced walnut aromas and just a whiff of leather. Wonderfully crisp (8.3 g/l total acidity) yet savoury flavours, seemingly dry with a hint of sultana and crystalised fruit on a long, racy yet delicately toasted finish. The incisive natural acidity makes this delicious to drink with sushi or sashimi, or try it with roasted almonds as a very civilised aperitif. (RM)" (08/2023) Vino...

95 points Wine Enthusiast: "Intensely nutty wine, a complete Madeira with a touch of honey permeating the wine. The wine's blend of poise between dryness and richness gives it a creamy, ripe character. Drink now. (RV) " (11/2023) 94 points Decanter: "Verdelho makes medium-dry wines; the grapes for this come from Porto Moniz on the cool northwest corner of Madeira island. Mid-deep amber with a green glint. Lovely, lifted savoury aromas with a hint of dried apricots and raisins, very appetising. Delicate leafy, greengage fruit, with considerable richness...

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "A rich, enticingly sweet Madeira has a well-integrated combination of wine and spirit. It is intense, maturing well and could be ready now. (RV)" (12/2023) 90 points Decanter: "Malvasia is the sweetest grape grown on Madeira and this comes from São Jorge, now the source of most Malmsey wine. Mid-deep amber colour with a gentle dried fig character and a hint of malt whisky on the nose. Dried fruit richness – dates and raisins – with some gently curried spice, the acidity cutting through and rising to leave a sweet, sub-tropic...

98 points Decanter: "From Malvasia grown at São Jorge on the north coast. Deep amber with an olive-green glint. Rich but restrained on the nose; notes of fresh greengage with bolo de mel (Madeiran honey cake) and spice. Gloriously fresh crystalised and caramelised fruit; the richness (135g/l residual sugar) is offset by the cut, but not the thrust, of racy apple and citrus acidity, plus a touch of astringency which persists on the finish. Simply magnificent Malvasia! (RM)" (08/2023) 96 points Wine Enthusiast: "The concentrated sweetness of a Malmsey is...

97 points Decanter: "Made from grapes grown at Porto Moniz on the cool northwest corner of Madeira island. Deep amber/mahogany colour, with immediacy on the nose: spiced prune, date and dried fig richness all come singing from the glass, just verging on high-toned (1.3g/l volatile acidity). Glorious quince marmalade richness (108 g/l residual sugar) and intensity offset by penetrating acidity and bitter-sweet astringency. Lovely focus mid-palate and a long, fresh multi-dimensional finish redolent of dried apricots and citrus. Perfectly poised. (RM)" (08/...

Wine Advocate: "The non-vintage Rainwater Medium Dry has an uncomplicated marmalade and wax resin nose. The palate is light and smooth, with the toffee component rounding out the finish. It is not as complex as Barbeito’s Rainwater, but should offer pleasure if slightly chilled and served as an aperitif. " (08/2012) K&L Notes: Rainwater is a medium-dry pale Madeira that is delicious when taken before a meal, but also goes well with dessert. Its elegant and refined bouquet has made it a popular Madeira with novices and die-hard Madeira lovers around the...

98 points Decanter: "Produced from grapes grown at Calheta on the sunny south coast. Deep amber/mahogany colour, this is rich and profound on the nose, with dried fruit compote and heady intensity. Powerful on the palate: the tang of tawny marmalade (115 g/l residual sugar) is offset by bracing acidity, which persists in parallel with dried fruit richness, all the way through the finish. Beautifully focused, this goes on and on. Glorious wine: the last release of a Blandy quartet from this successful vintage. (RM)" (08/2023) 95 points Wine Enthusiast: ...

94 points Decanter: "Unusually the grapes for this wine come from Calheta on Madeira's south coast (presumably at a fairly high altitude given the acidity). Lovely deep amber colour, verging on nut brown. Lifted on the nose, quite powerful and intense with roast almond and a touch of toffee and butterscotch. Surprisingly full in flavour for a Sercial on the palate (55 g/l residual sugar), with spiced, toffeed and caramelised flavours, plus zesty acidity cutting in mid-palate (11 g/l total acidity) leaving a typically astringent yet full greengage and app...

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of Broadbent "Old Reserve" Terrantez Madeira (91RP). Wine Advocate: "he non-vintage Terrantez Old Reserve is a selection of the finest Terrantez grapes (not there is much left on the island) and aged for ten years in oak casks. This was bottled in February 2011. It has a slightly disjointed nose at first, taking time to settle down over several hours and eventually offering a dainty bouquet of hazelnut, antique bureau, orange rind, pressed flowers and a touch of leather. The palate is taut and vibrant on the entry with orange zest, fiery red peppers and a touch of marmalade. Compared to other Broadbent bottlings, it shows more sense of purpose, more 'thrust'. It has a palpable sense of symmetry towards the finish that just eases off the accelerator. But this is very true to this wonderful grape variety, especially upon its extraordinarily long, lightly spiced aftertaste. " (08/2012)

Bid on this bottle of 1978 Blandy's Malmsey Madeira in original wood. Showing barely a hint of its 30-plus years, this vintage Malmsey is a full-bodied, wonderfully rich Madeira with a unique honeyed flavor and a concentrated bouquet. Enjoy with desserts or on its own after a meal. "Deliciously balanced with caramel and herbs and mouth-filling spice. Great depth, complexity and a long, solid finish." (IWC 2003)
