Giovanni Blason and his wife Valentina are young producers who continuously surprise us with the price-to-quality ratio of their wines, earning them tons of kudos in Gambero Rosso and beyond. They come from the Isonzo region of Northern Italy, right up against the Slovenian border.

90 points James Suckling: "Sliced apples, apricots, pears and lemons on the nose. Hint of aniseed, too. It’s medium-bodied, crisp and fruity with a ripe, subtly spicy finish. " (10/2021) K&L Notes: Dario Ermacora was one of our first Italian Direct Imports. His wines have always been textbook, classic, and archetypal for Friulian whites: understated, balanced, with a long finish. His winery is in the Colli Orientali del Friuli, or the Eastern Hills of Friuli, a few scant kilometers from the Slovenian border. Most of Friuli is a flat, glaciated plain ru...

Sitting in the northeastern corner of Italy on the border of Slovenia, Collio has an ancient winegrowing history and remains an important DOC zone for quality white wines. Here the Palla family, led by patriarch Giancarlo, produces distinctive wines from these Friulian lands. Densely planted vines produce a terroir-driven Pinot Grigio, which features a flinty profile with notes of pear and fine minerals.

Monica Larner reports: "The Ermacora family estate is located among the gentle hills of Ipplis and Montsclapade ad Orsaria in the township of Premariacco. This area has vineyards from 120 to 150 meters in altitude with mineral-rich marl soils that are also especially rich in organic material. These conditions favor old vines, with some estate plants now over the 50-year mark. Nicola Ermacora is working toward sustainable farming practices. The estate farms 40 hectares of vines and inaugurated its new winery in 2019."

Bortolusso's estate vineyards are uniquely situated near the edge of a lagoon at sea level, giving the wines a tense balance and refreshingly maritime quality. The Franconia varietal is the local version of the well-known Austrian Blaufränkisch grape.
Winery notes: "Pinot Grigio from Pinot Grigio grapes, fermented as a white wine. It has an intense straw-yellow colour; its aroma is intense, full and fruity, with excellent persistence. Its taste is dry, velvety, and particularly well-orchestrated for its full body."

Monica Larner of Wine Advocate writes of the estate: "I Clivi makes wines from two sites in Friuli’s best areas. The estate was founded by Ferdinando Zanusso but is managed today by his son Mario. There are eight hectares in Corno di Rosazzo in the Friuli Colli Orientali appellation and four in Collio’s Brazzano di Cormons subzone. Both areas are planted to old vines on hillside terraces." "I am fascinated by Italian sparkling wines made of indigenous Italian varieties," writes importer Oliver McCrum, "and the Zanussis make a really good one. It's not made by either of the normal methods used to make dry sparkling wine, but rather by the method used to make Moscato d'Asti, which involves putting must into the special fermentation tank, and fermenting all the way from grape-juice to sparkling wine in one step. The wine is then aged in the tank on the lees until judged to be done, then decanted off the lees and bottled. (Some top-end Prosecc...
