93 points Wine Advocate: "Medium garnet-purple in color, the 2016 Cuvee Alis Estate Vineyard is a blend of 51% Grenache, 19% Syrah, 17% Mourvedre, 12% Petite Sirah and 1% Viognier. The nose sings of preserved Morello cherries, mulberries, fruitcake and Chinese five spice with touches of potpourri, black pepper and licorice. Full-bodied, rich and decadently fruited, the palate provides a solid structure of firm, velvety tannins and tons of freshness to lift all that opulent fruit to a very long, spicy finish. For decades now, our Kalinda private label has been providing K&L customers with awesome wines at a fraction of what they'd normally pay under the producers' mainstay labels. Naturally, no producer wants their wines on the market for less than what they'd usually sell for, so the trade-off is anonymity. This is a superb Cabernet-very elegant and user friendly already. Lots of sweet cassis and red fruit aromas that follow to the palate. No hard edges here-drink it young with a prime rib or steak dinner. Will cellar well for five plus years. clyde

95 points Wine Enthusiast: "This attention-grabbing blend of 50% Grenache and 50% Syrah is impressive now and will only grow more intriguing with cellar time. Aromas of roasted black plum, pulverized violets, dried beef and hot asphalt lead into a meaty palate wrapped in powdery tannins and loaded with dried berry, purple flower and teriyaki-soaked beef flavors. Drink now-2035. *Cellar Selection* (MK)" (03/2023) K&L Notes: Only 185 cases were produced of this luscious Rhône-inspired Syrah, Grenache blend that underwent 20% whole-cluster fermentation an...

94 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Made by Greg Brewer and already bottled, the 2023 Chardonnay comes from the Mission Mills Vineyard just outside of Los Alamos. Its vivid medium gold hue is followed by a vibrant nose of salted citrus, tangerine, exotic flowers, and subtle spice. Medium-bodied, pure, rounded, and beautifully balanced, it has plenty of power and density, integrated acidity, and a great finish. This impeccably made Chardonnay should be snatched up by readers, as it competes with wines at two to three times the price." (08/2024) 94 points Vinous: "T...

Boutique winery Vinoce continues to impress. Little surprise when you consider their wines are made by much-heralded winemaker Keith Emerson of Vineyard 29! Emerson crafts some of the most highly sought-after cult Cabs in the valley from St. Helena fruit at Vineyard 29, including wines rated at 100-points by Robert Parker himself. Considering that pedigree, Vinoce's St. Helena Cab is very well priced at the regular $60 SRP, but at our Insider's Advantage price of over 50% off, it's just plain ridiculous.

95 points Vinous: "The 2021 Hair of the Bear is an unusual blend of 75% Petite Syrah and 25% Roussanne. It’s a combination that works so well. Inky dark fruit, licorice, cloves, chocolate and sweet spice all meld together effortlessly, while perfumed floral notes lift the finish. (AG)" (07/2023) 94 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2021 Hair of the Bear is based largely on Petite Sirah but includes a whopping 25% Roussanne, all from the estate Stolpman Vineyard on Ballard Canyon. Old Potrero is a true pioneer of modern whiskey. 100% malted rye pot distilled single malt - being made in San Francisco starting in 1993. Bruce Joseph has been making the whiskies (and their other fun products) since day one and is still the master distiller today. This 17 year old cask strength bottling was aged for 24 month air dried fine grain new American oak - and it is a beast.

La Rinconada was planted in the mid-1990s directly adjacent to Sanford & Benedict Vineyard. The soils are oceanic in origin, Monterey shale and diatomaceous earth that seems to impart a distinctive minerality in the wines. The region is heavily influenced by cold winds off the Pacific Ocean that moderates temperatures and reduces vigor and yields from the vines making for very intensely flavored fruit. This small production wine, typically only sold at the winery and to mailing list customers offers a chance to taste world-class, single vineyard Chardonn...

The medium to full-bodied palate is lively and vibrant - pop-rocks in your mouth - with lots of texture interest combining plush and chewy, and bright and lifted fruit leading to a peppery finish. After working as the vineyard manager for Newton Vineyards for over 30 years, Lupe Maldonado bought a 10-acre piece of land in the cool southern tip of Napa (in Jamieson Canyon), and planted vineyards in the dark, gravelly clay soil. He brought in Jean Hoefliger from Newton as his consulting winemaker.
97 points Wine Enthusiast: "This sleek but powerful and concentrated wine offers enticing and deep black cherry, graphite and cocoa aromas followed by fine-grained tannins that tighten up as you sip. The wine is built for the long haul, needing time for more complexity to develop and the texture to soften. *Cellar Selection* (JG)" (04/2024) K&L Notes: The wines of Beau Vigne are now crafted cult winemaker Julien Fayard. 93 points John Gilman: "The 2022 Evangelho Vineyard bottling from Cody and Emily Rasmussen is composed from a blend of ninety percent, very old vine Carignan and ten percent Mourvèdre. The Carignan vines are ungrafted and were planted in the 1890s! The wine was fermented with thirty percent whole clusters and raised all in foudres and the 2022 comes in at an even fourteen percent octane. It delivers a deep and complex aromatic constellation of cassis, sweet dark berries, chocolate, smoked meats, a lovely base of soil, a lovely array of spice tones and ju...

97-99 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Not yet bottled but already incredibly impressive, the 2021 G2 will be Grenache-dominated but includes smaller amounts of Syrah and Graciano. It’s loaded with red and black raspberry-like fruits as well as tons of floral, pepper, and spicy nuances, which carry to a full-bodied, pure, elegant red. It’s remarkably complex for such a young wine and has incredible tannins and a gorgeous finish. Don’t miss it." 93 points The Wine Independent: "The NV Cabernet Sauvignon Quixotic is a blend of 79% 2019 vintage from Hunnicutt and 21% 2020 vintage from a vineyard in St Helena. Deep garnet-purple in color, it rolls out of the glass with notes of warm cassis, Morello cherries, and plum preserves, plus hints of unsmoked cigars, spice cake, and dried roses with a waft of mossy tree bark. The medium to full-bodied palate is soft and juicy, with bags of fragrant fruit and a lively finish. (LPB)" (04/2023)
94 points Wine Enthusiast: "An estate-grown wine given 30% whole-cluster fermentation, this is a fleshy and lively red wine, broad in appeal and funky earthiness. 95 points Decanter: "This is a wonderful wine from Grand Vent, Cleary Ranch, the Michael Valentine vineyard from the Freestone Valley, and a Laguna vineyard that supplies the Swann clone. 97 points Vinous: "This is now the third opportunity I have had to review the utterly stunning 2019 Syrah SJR Vineyard - a wine that is actually showing better than when I first tasted it. Initially more reticent and Burgundian, this polished Syrah was aged in 60% new French oak before bottling. The wine shows beautiful red rose petals, nori, smoldering stones and orange blossom. Readers will find a Lytton Springs that is very much in reserve, as opposed to the rest of the 2021s in this report, all of which are more approachable. Salivating acids and veins of tannin lend shape and persistence, but the 2021 needs time. Red cherry fruit, blood orange, rose petal and sage are some of the notes that linger on the close. From one of Clyde's old friends, and from certified organic vineyards in the Redwood Valley AVA of Mendocino County, the Kalinda Sauvignon Blanc is an intense expression of terroir. He soon replanted the vineyard to Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier and Sangiovese. Today the mature vines produce incredible fruit and Lou enjoys making wines f...

It will keep nicely through 2029 with no issues, and I suspect even longer. This is 100% Syrah that spent two years in one-third new French oak." (08/2023)

As with all the ’21s here, it has a vivid purple hue as well as a great perfume of sweet red and blue fruits, spring flowers, ground pepper, and underbrush, but it’s on the palate where this beauty really shines. Variability in cluster size and weight gives a nice texture to the Chardonnay. The "black chardonnay" technique helps the wine become ageable early, aged on fine lees, 25% new barriques, 7.5 months.
