Burgundy

Welcome to one of the most historic wine regions in the world, a province of eastern France that is famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of other grapes are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) This is complicated and exciting territory - the hallowed ground where more than a few bonafide wine geeks end up. View our selection...

2017 Jacques Bavard Bourgogne Blanc
Top Pick!
A Direct Import favorite here at K&L for its accessibility—excellent value for the price. On this Puligny winemaker Allen Meadows writes: "Jacques Bavard is a former Paris restaurateur and a fifth generation Puligny winemaker. He lives in the old stone house of his grandfather on the Grand Rue. However, he is not farming his family vines but has become a micro-négoce working closely with several growers. Bavard prefers early picking since he believes Burgundy needs nervous energy to better display its terroir. He works with a mix of conventionally-sized ...

95 points Wine Enthusiast: "Tasted alongside the more richly extracted 2020 vintage, this 2019 bottling of Morot’s Beaune Teurons highlights ripe blackberry and cherry flavors lifted by streaks of acidity and a crystalline spine of minerality. Luscious in fruit yet svelte and bristling, it’s an elegant, satisfying wine that’s approachable young yet is likely to improve through 2030 and hold further still. (AI)" (05/2022) 93 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Discreetly spicy and very pretty floral infused aromas include those of red and dark currant, c...

Domaine Renaud is a small operation, making Mâcon, Pouilly-Fuissé, and St. Veran from 12 hectares of estate vineyards. Their cellar is modern, and they use upright ovals for many of the wines, and stainless steel for others. This value is a great alternative to California Chardonnay and an entry into white Burgundy.

While Domaine Sylvain Langoureau may not be a household name, we anticipate it will become the go-to producer for those who enjoy artfully crafted wines that combine a pronounced citrus element with crisp acidity and a touch of minerality. This family-run estate does everything by hand, is committed to low yields, and focuses on conveying each site's distinctive terroir. Producer notes from Allen Meadows for Burghound: "Sylvain Langoureau has been directing this 9 ha domaine since 1989 which he says is now farmed entirely organically." (06/2020)

A winemaking cooperative in the Mâconnais comprising members who seek out the most "secret" plots of earth to make their distinctive wines. From the producer: "The vines reserved for this vintage flourish on clay-limestone soils from the Jurassic era, not far from the rocky outcrops of Solutré and Vergisson. Originating from the slopes of the commune of Prissé at the foot of the Château de Montceau, which once belonged to the poet Alphonse de Lamartine, this wine made from a single Chardonnay variety has plenty of strength and character!"

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Aromas of pear, orange oil, smoke and fresh pastry preface the 2020 Puligny-Montrachet Village, a medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy wine with a generous core of fruit and a mouthwateringly saline finish. (WK) The 2020 vintage has turned out quite nicely chez Domaine Paul Pernot, where the house style remains fleshy, giving and front-loaded. For now, the domaine's wines are made in much the same way that they always have been: whole-cluster pressed, barrel fermented and matured for some 11 months, with bottling befor...

Château de la Charrière is one of our most popular direct import producers and a label that easily represents the best Burgundy bang for your buck that we carry. Formerly run by Yves Girardin, the business is now run by his young son Benoit, who definitely has modernized the winemaking since his first vintage in 2011. Whereas the wines were a bit funky and rustic previously, the past few vintages are much cleaner, showcasing the pureness of the Pinot Noir by de-stemming completely so as to remove excess tannic structure.

2019 Domaine Bernard Moreau Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru "La Maltroie" (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
Back In Stock!
92-94 points Vinous: "The 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet La Maltroye 1er Cru has an expressive bouquet with Granny Smith apples, sliced pear, crushed rock and a touch of white peach. The palate is full of energy thanks to that silver bead of acidity. Very harmonious with just a hint of albumen towards the long and tender finish. Give this 2-3 years for that oak to fully assimilate. (NM)" (12/2020) 91-93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Revealing aromas of white flowers, crisp green apple, nutmeg and wheat toast, Moreau's 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er ...

In 2003, Yves Girardin, a 10th generation grower in Santenay (and brother of Vincent Girardin) acquired this property and built a new winemaking facility. More recently, after completing technical training, Yves’s son Benoit has joined him, bringing to 11 the consecutive generations of the family to grow wine in Santenay. Working in their new cellars, they have really improved quality a tremendous amount in the last few years, and we are excited to import their wines direct.

Domaine Renaud is a small operation in the town of Puissé making Mâcon, Pouilly-Fuissé and St. Veran from twelve hectares of estate vineyards. The wines have long been customer favorites at K&L with their clean and fresh style, and their affordable price tags. Jancis Robinson: "More flinty than the Maison de la Chapelle Aligoté. More citrus and more marked acidity. This is a fine palate-opener, lean but not thin. Herbal, lively, direct, long. (JH) " (01/2022)
Price: $15.99

91-94 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A seductive, cool and wonderfully layered nose also offers up slightly exotic fruit aromas though the primary thrust of the nose is white peach and citrus that continues onto the rich, precise, racy and almost painfully intense flavors that are borderline aggressively mineral in character, all wrapped in a bone dry, long and palate staining finish. Very impressive. *Sweet Spot, Outstanding*" (01/2009) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Latour’s 2007 Meursault Genevrieres appears as an ideal marriage betwe...

Château de la Charrière is the family property of Yves Girardin, scion of one the most established families in Burgundy, with a history extending back 13 generations. Yves and his son Benoit farm 21.5 hectares of domaine holdings, and since Benoit has taken over the winemaking after finished his studies in Beaune and Bordeaux, the wines have truly taken on a refined and focused character that belies their incredibly affordable price points. We've been direct importing these wines for a number of years now, and they've more than capably stood up as some o...

2007 Maison Louis Latour Meursault 1er Cru "Les Charmes"
Top Pick!
89-91 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Obvious but not really intrusive wood treatment still allows the hazelnut and white peach aromas to express themselves before dissolving into rich, full and very fresh and energetic middle weight flavors that are also quite dry but don't possess the depth of material on the otherwise solidly persistent finish." (07/2009) 90 points Wine Spectator: "Broad strokes of apple cake, butterscotch and spice lead off in this powerful white, which is subdued by racy acidity on the finish for now. Needs time to integrate. (...

The sleek, vibrant and solidly rich medium-bodied flavors possess a lovely mid-palate mouthfeel that contrasts somewhat with the mildly rustic and lingering finale. 2019 Domaine Trapet Père et Fils Chambertin Grand Cru (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)

99 points Decanter: "Velvety and dense, showing enchanting approachability even at this early stage. There are forward, sweet aromas of red and black plum, cassis, and bramble on the nose, with a distinct floral edge and a hint of liquorice. There is enough extract to suggest that, despite its approachability, this will age for decades to come. Made with grapes from two well-placed parcels in the centre of Chambertin, running from the bottom nearly to the top of the slope. Drinking Window 2026 - 2060. The original Charles Noellat estate was absorbed by Domaine Leroy in 1988, yet the name lives on as a négociant label sourcing grapes from some of the finest vineyards in Burgundy. Jasper Morris, MW writes: "The Noëllat tribe are abundant in this part of the Côte de Nuits. Two brothers, Charles and Ernest, flourished in the early part of the 20th century. 2019 Domaine Albert Morot Beaune 1er Cru "Toussaints"
Top Pick!
92 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "This too is aromatically very pretty with its array of anise, floral, red and dark cherry and suggestion of humus scents. The elegance continues on the appealingly textured middle weight flavors that are at once seductive yet punchy, which contrasts considerably with the firm, serious, youthfully austere and built-to-age finale. This also is going to require at least some forbearance and is a wine that should amply repay extended keeping. *Outstanding*" (04/2021)

Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Here too there is a whiff of matchstick character to the more floral and petrol suffused nose. There is also a bit more richness and volume to the seductive medium-bodied flavors that deliver better persistence and depth. This is very good and worth considering." (10/2021) 92 points Decanter: "Rich, intense peach and apricot aromas. Powerful, complex and textured, with sharp acidity and roasted nut character. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and textural, this is ripe but succulent, underpinned by lively acids and fine-grained tannins. After blending there was an average of 80% whole cluster fermentation.
