Bordeaux

We're extremely focused on Bordeaux - several staff members fly over to the region on multiple trips each year to taste new vintages from barrel and older vintages from bottle. K&L also enjoys excellent relationships with negociants and châteaux, and over the years we've established outstanding allocations on the top wines. It hasn't hurt that one of K&L's owners is a complete Bordeaux fanatic and our main buyer. The top red wines are typically blends of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc and the white are primarily Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, though the blends vary substantially depending on which part of the region you're talking about. Within Bordeaux you'll also find the sweet wines of Sauternes. Interested in great Bordeaux? Look no further...

2015 Fontesteau, Haut-Médoc
Top Pick!
91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at the Cru Bourgeois annual tasting, the 2015 Fontesteau has a generous bouquet with blackberry, raspberry, cedar and sous bois scents that are nicely defined. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, quite fine tannin, plenty of edgy red fruit and impressive delineation on the finish that shows focus and length. This is recommended. Bravo. (NM)" (10/2017) Wine Enthusiast: "This rich, spicy wine has a toasty element from the new-wood aging and also plenty of ripe, berry fruits and balanced acidity. It co...

90 points Decanter: "Austere cassis and blueberry fruits here with tannins that are pretty tight. This is an enjoyable estate that needs a few years in bottle but should soften and open within two to three years. (02/2021) Wine Enthusiast: "This property of the Pagès family has given us an attractively fruity wine. Tannins are still young and the black-currant fruit is still fresh ...

2010 Haut-Bergey, Pessac-Léognan
Top Pick!
92-93 points James Suckling: "This is a wine that shows lots of chocolate, tobacco and currants. Full body, with velvety tannins and a long finish. All there." (04/2011) 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "From Helene Garcin, this blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot displays classic tobacco leaf and smoky barbecue notes along with rich black currants and crushed rocks in a medium to full-bodied, seductive, attractively up-front style. 2016 Smith-Haut-Lafitte, Pessac-Léognan 6-Pack in OWC (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
Top Pick!
100 points Decanter: "Pure perfection in a glass, the 2016 offers notes of cherry, liquorice, smoke, graphite, plum and eucalyptus. It is fresh and racy. This is a perfectly balanced wine, full of energy and freshness, juicy and fleshy on the palate, with a classic tannic frame and a long yet persistent finish. 2016 Clos Grangeneuve, Côtes de Bordeaux
Top Pick!
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Clos Grangeneuve has a pleasant bouquet with clean black cherry and cranberry scents, the oak a little obvious at the moment, but that will be subsumed with time. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly raw tannin and it seems to lacks some freshness toward the austere, slightly dry finish. (NM)" (04/2017) K&L Notes: Pair this pleasing (for both palate and budget) Merlot/Cab blend with cheeses such as Comté or Gruyère. A juicy steak would be perfect too! Black fruit driven with stony minerality and grippy tann...

2010 Pape Clément, Pessac-Léognan (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
Top Pick!
100 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Its sublime elegance, the power, the medium to full-bodied texture, the silky tannins, the subtle notes of smoke, lead pencil shavings, black currants, charcoal, camphor, blueberry and cassis fruit are all remarkable. It is a rich, full-throttle wine, but the elegance and the great terroir of Pape Clement come through in abundance. It is slightly more developed and evolved than the 2005 was at a similar point in its evolution, but it certainly needs another 5-7 years to develop further nuances, which it surely w...

91 points Wine Enthusiast: "A Castillon ridge mix of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, this perfumed wine has new wood and mint flavors that balance with the black fruits and tannins. It's ripe, with fresh acidity as well as structure. There's just 8,500 bottles from 7.5 acres. This will age well, so drink from 2017. Owner Nicolas Thienpont purchased the vineyard in 2011. (RV)" (12/2014) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A property of winemaking guru Nicolas Thienpont, this blend of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc shows very strong, chalky minerality, l...

Intense flavors at the end, too, with lead pencil and lots of blackberry. Very classic and precise." (05/2021) 96-98 points Wine Enthusiast: "Bold black fruits and dense, textured tannins are very much in the style of the estate. 93-94 points James Suckling: "Very spicy and intense, with dark berries and sweet tobacco. Full and velvety. Very long and intense." (04/2011) 93 points Decanter: "Powerful and intense, with deep dark chocolate, black cherry and blackcurrant ... black everything. It has more depth of flavor than the 2011 vintage, although both are exceptional wines with lots to offer. Very tannic, this is austere but doesn't show any bitterness. 65% of production was used in the grand vin, matured in 33% new oak. (JA)" (07/2018) 92 points Wine Spectator: "Dense, wine...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Scents of plums, dried herbs, black cherries, currants, and a hint of coffee beans rise from the glass of this dark ruby-colored, pleasant, attractively supple, easy-going 2002. (RP)" (04/2005) K&L Notes: At the very top of the Haut-Médoc, embedded in a sea of gravel just next to the Gironde River north of St-Estèphe, sits the anomaly of the Left Bank: Château Coufran, the "Pomerol of the Médoc," so-called for its high propensity of Merlot vines in a region where Cabernet reigns supreme. 100 points James Suckling: "This is so layered and intense on the palate with lemons and dried pineapple, mango and honey. Full body, very sweet, but it remains tangy and vibrant. Shows such amazing balance and intensity. Crazy finish. Hints of vanilla and apple purée. One of the greatest Yquems ever. All about purity here. 92 points Decanter: "2015 was an exceptional vintage in this part of the world, making many second wines a shrewd value purchase. Luckily this doesn't disappoint, although I cannot recommend highly enough that you go for the 2010 at this point, as the 2015 is still extremely young and tight. You can feel a touch of heat on the finish from the alcohol, which is indiscernible in the grand vin, but you can entirely forgive it given its finesse combined with a swirl of cinnamon and a lick of fun. (JA)" (11/2017) 90-91 points James Suckling: "A tight and fo...

Under the ownership of Château Fourcas-Dupré, this wine is comprised of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Merlot. Tasting note from French wine guide Gilbert & Gaillard: "Nose on the fruit (sloe, cherry, raspberry), discreet smoky woody frame. A pleasantly structured listrac, dense, fine tannins and a beautiful fruity presence already jammy. A set that announces roast meat." (2017)
Price: $16.99

90-92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Located in Fronsac, the soil here is mainly limestone. The 2018 Tour du Moulin is made of 80% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon, with a 3.54 pH and 14.6% alcohol. Deep garnet-purple colored, it gives up vibrant notes of wild blueberries, Morello cherries and fresh black raspberries with touches of unsmoked cigars, sautéed herbs and crushed rocks. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers bags of bright black and blue fruits with soft, rounded tannins and great freshness, finishing savory. (...

(02/2019) 95 points Vinous: "The 2016 Meyney has a very deep color. The bouquet is a stunner, delivering intense, mineral-rich black fruit pixelated to the nth degree. Try from 2022." The palate has a super powerful and long, linear core with plenty of fruit flesh strapped in tight for a long and thrilling ride into the finish." (02/2019) 97 points Wine Spectator: "This is so vivid as it brims with pastis-soaked plum, blackberry, black currant and blueberry paste flavors, all carried by a perfectly integrated brambly spine. Tar and ganache notes give the finish an extra...

2009 Pontet-Canet, Pauillac (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
Top Pick!
100 points Jeb Dunnuck: "A consistently perfect wine every time I've had it, the 2009 Château Pontet-Canet is the greatest wine from this address to date as well as one of the greatest Pauillacs out there. Still youthfully ruby/purple and with a gorgeous perfume of blackcurrants, lead pencil, graphite, crushed rocks, and damp earth, it's still youthful but is just now starting to show more nuance and complexity. Full-bodied on the palate, with a powerful, concentrated mid-palate, incredible depth of fruit, and flawless balance, Bordeaux simply does not g...

96 points James Suckling: "This wine has always been soft and delicious, with an almost decadent character of strawberry tart, earth, meat and spices. It’s full and very soft, with refined tannins and a very long finish." (04/2014) 96 points Wine Enthusiast: "Right from the early days of tasting in spring 2001, this was going to be one of the stars of the vintage. And a star it remains. There is big, ripe fruit, with solid, ageworthy tannins. It may not be as powerful as some of the blockbusters of the vintage, but it is certainly more opulent, less cl...

2010 Pontet-Canet, Pauillac (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)

100 points James Suckling: "The aromas to this are incredible with blueberry, minerals, dried flowers, and stones. It goes to dried meat and spices. There's an amazing transparency that shows you all the elements of the wine's unique terrior." (02/2013) 100 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "An absolutely amazing wine, from grapes harvested between the end of September ...

98 points James Suckling: "Beautiful clarity of fruit with raspberries and currants on the nose. Roses and other flowers too. It's almost hard to describe, but there's a real purity. Full body, with fabulous balance and depth. It has everything in the right place. Best ever?" (02/2013) 98 points Jeb Dunnuck: "A wine that could easily be mistaken for a First Growth, the 2010 Rauzan-Ségla is an incredibly powerful, full-bodied wine by this estate’s standards, yet it nevertheless holds onto a terrific sense of elegance as well as perfect balance. A huge n...

95 points Vinous: "The 2010 Langoa-Barton has a very pure and quite intense bouquet with black cherries, blueberry and star anis aromas that are typically Langoa. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins, impressive body and grip with a liquorice-tinged, saline finish that maybe just lacks a little flesh and needs more on the aftertaste. (NM)" (04/2020) 94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Fruity and juicy, this showcases the accessibility of this estate, while also highlighting some of the tannic structure of its big brother, Léoville-Barton. There i...

98 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Always showing well, this bottle of 2005 Château Pontet Canet was just about pure perfection in a glass. Still youthful ruby/purple-hued, with a gorgeous core of pure cassis and darker currant fruits, it's full-bodied and has a stacked mid-palate, building tannins, and textbook Pauillac graphite, lead pencil, and subtle tobacco and cedar aromas and flavors. It's a big, rich, powerful 2005 with flawlessly integrated tannins, remarkable purity, and a finish that won't quit. " (08/2021) 97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tas...

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The spectacular 2003 Pontet Canet is still incredibly young and vigorous. This full-bodied classic boasts a dense purple color as well as a superb nose of graphite, creme de cassis, forest floor, licorice and a hint of truffles, low acidity, and extravagant richness. Most of the tannins have been resolved in this superstar of the vintage. It should continue to drink well for 10-15+ years. The Capbern-Gasqueton 2009 has a very precise bouquet with ample red fruits: wild strawberry and raspberry with subtle earth and liquorice notes underneath and beginning to rise to the surface with each swirl of the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with good fruit concentration, slightly chalky tannins at this stage, good tension and mineralite coming through towards the finish with blacker fruits, one again with ...

97 points Vinous: "A towering, statuesque wine, the 2010 Pavie-Macquin is distinguished by its vertical explosiveness and soaring intensity. Red cherry jam, plums and dried flowers are some of the many aromas and flavors that open up as the 2010 gains breadth over time. Naturally, the 2010 is still a very young wine, but it is incredibly impressive just the same, not to mention one of the highlights of the morning. (AG)" (12/2019) 97 points Wine Spectator: "This takes the fruit of 2009 but harnesses it even more quickly, with rivets of graphite and app...

98 points Decanter: "Here we are fully crossing the threshold into younger, more primary aromatics, but they are also well integrated, beautifully softened and gorgeous. This is sappy with a chalky minerality and fully pliable tannins. It's powerful, with a smile-inducing purity of fruit expression and excellent persistency of exotic coffee notes. 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 3.5% Cabernet Franc, 0.5% Petit Verdot. (JA)" (03/2017) 98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2005 Montrose continues to show brilliantly, unwinding in the glass wi...

2010 Montrose, St-Estèphe
Top Pick!
100 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This is considered to be among the greatest vintages ever made in Montrose, right up with the 1929, 1945, 1947, 1959, 1961, 1989, 1990 and 2009. Harvest was October 15 to 17. The wine has really come on since I last tasted it, and it needs at least another 10 years of cellaring. The blend was 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. The wine is opaque black/blue, with an incredible nose of blueberry and blackberry liqueur, with hints of incense, licorice, and acacia flowers. Tan...

98-99 points James Suckling: "Blackcurrants, orange peel, flowers and tar with hints of graphite. Full-bodied with a creamy texture of exquisitely polished tannins. It goes on and on. Intense flavors at the end, too, with lead pencil and lots of blackberry. Very classic and precise." (05/2021) 96-98 points Wine Enthusiast: "Bold black fruits and dense, textured tannins are very much in the style of the estate. 98 points Jeb Dunnuck: "A wine that could easily be mistaken for a First Growth, the 2010 Rauzan-Ségla is an incredibly powerful, full-bodied wine by this estate’s standards, yet it nevertheless holds onto a terrific sense of elegance as well as perfect balance. A huge nose of blackcurrants, smoked earth, tobacco, lead pencil, and spice give way to a concentrated, blockbuster styled Margaux that has thrilling depth of fruit, masses of ripe tannins, and great length and finesse on the finish. This brilliant wine is just now seemingly on the edge of its dr...

97 points James Suckling: "This red shows lots of redcurrants and fresh flowers on the nose. It’s full-bodied with juicy tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Needs three or four years to resolve some of the tannins. Beautiful Cabernet character, but already a joy to taste." (02/2017) 95 points Vinous: "The 2014 Grand Puy Lacoste is superb. Dark, dense and inviting, the 2014 possesses remarkable depth and richness. Black cherry, plum, smoke, licorice and tobacco all develop in the glass, but it is the overall feel that is most impressive. Silky, polish...

94 points Vinous: "The 2009 Langoa-Barton has a gorgeous bouquet with blackberry, bilberry, cedar and light tobacco aromas that blossom from the glass. This feels so composed and pure. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, fine-grain tannin, beautifully judged acidity and a svelte, languorous finish that fans out with style. What a gorgeous and utterly seductive Saint-Julien. It turns out to be Langoa Barton, a wine that I have rated very highly in the past. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 2009 Bordeaux tasting. (NM)" (03/2019) 93 points W...

97 points Wine Spectator: "This shows some noticeable maturity at first, with black tea and mulling spice notes out front, but there's a lovely spine of briary tannins and finely beaded acidity that pulls this back to a fresher side as the core of raspberry pâte de fruit slowly wakes up, throwing off additional cherry, currant and plum nuances. By the time this all knits through the finish, you realize it's just a bit too soon to open this beauty. (JM, Web Only-2016)" 89-95 points James Suckling: "I am really loving the nose here, sweet ripe fruit, ras...

Better than 2015. Take a serious look at it, beginning 2024." (02/2019) 96 points Jeb Dunnuck: "It’s a total rock star of a wine and has fabulous notes of crème de cassis, barbecue smoke, graphite, and sandalwood that build beautifully with time in the glass.
