Here is your dark sherry bomb for the season! While it's not coffee dark, it's a gorgeous auburn/polished mahogany color. The simply lovely hue is a hint at the stupendous malt inside the bottle. The wonderful Dailuaine Distillery is finally garnering some notoriety with aficionados and the wider populace in general. It's taken many years to pull this lesser-known distillery out of obscurity and put it on the pedestal it deserves. Now that it's finally getting the recognition it deserves, maybe we wish we could hide it once again. This is officially the ...

94 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The NV Champagne Brut Rose is an attractive pale salmon hue, with a fresh perfume of wild strawberry, ripe peach, white and red flowers, a hint of tropical fruit, and grapefruit. The palate is rounded, with fruit up front and through the mid-palate, and it has a silky and fresh lift. There is a wonderful ease and drinkability to this wine, which delivers balance and finesse. (AF)" (11/2022) 93 points James Suckling: "Pale salmon color, showing notes of sliced strawberries, apples, grapefruit and crushed biscuits. Sleek, dry and ...

The wonderful Craigellachie distillery is beginning to become more of a household name now that the owners have made an earnest attempt to market the malt under its own name. The funky little distillery outside of the eponymous named village is on the hillside directly across from Easter Elchies the famous estate where Macallan is built. The much more humble Craigellachie proudly displays the John Dewars name in large letters on the front of the distillery building. Craigellachie has been a regular on our shelves for many years offering complex malts of ...

97 points Wine Enthusiast: "This sleek but powerful and concentrated wine offers enticing and deep black cherry, graphite and cocoa aromas followed by fine-grained tannins that tighten up as you sip. The wine is built for the long haul, needing time for more complexity to develop and the texture to soften. *Cellar Selection* (JG)" (04/2024) K&L Notes: The wines of Beau Vigne are now crafted cult winemaker Julien Fayard. Julien learned how to make wine at Chateau Lafite Rothschild and Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte in Bordeaux before coming to Napa Valley t...

93 points Wine Advocate: "With a brut dosage (less than 12 grams per liter), the 2016 Pur Avize Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs displays a smoky, refined bouquet with aromas of almonds, lemon oil, vanilla, pear and stone fruits mingled with hints of spring flowers. Comparable in style to the Unisson Grand Cru, it’s medium to full-bodied, broad and fleshy, with a delicate, pinpoint mousse and a long, penetrating finish. As its name indicates, it’s sourced from vines planted in the village of Avize. (YC)" (11/2023) K&L Notes: The "Pur Avize" from Champagne Fra...

The incredible Dornoch Distillery is easily the most exciting new distillery operation in Scotland today. Run by brothers Phil & Simon Thompson, they understand the desires of true whisky lovers like few other distillers in the region. While their tiny distillery can only produce a handful of barrels a year, they're in the process of building a much more substantial plant and while we wait, they've built an excellent independent bottling operation known as Thompson Bros (Redacted Bros stateside.) This special whisky pays homage to their home region, a go...

98 points Decanter: "The second iteration of this wine (tasted pre-release), which is quickly rising to icon status in Swinney’s portfolio. Tiny production from bushvines, the fruit is harvested in three passes wild fermented in whole bunches and matured in old oak. Currently tightly wound and holding its cards close to its chest, its starry journey ahead is clear. Vibrant, densely knit dark black plum aromas with a jewel-like clarity, along with violets, star anise, eucalypt, heady ferrous notes and crushed earth. Tannins might be tight and bunched up i...

If you have enjoyed the wines of Lallement, Bollinger and Krug in the past, we think you will very much enjoy Michel Arnould. They are bold Champagnes with plenty of toasty flavor. This is a blend of 50% Pinot Noir and 50% Chardonnay, entirely from estate vineyards in the Grand Cru of Verzenay. Verzenay is the northernmost of all the Grand Crus in this northernmost of French wine regions. The whole village faces north—the wrong way, away from the sun—and yet miraculously ripens Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Some say it's because of a meteor that, in prehist...

Here's a fabulous follow-up to the exceptionally good 25-year-old unpeated Ardmore that we featured in last year's Whisky Season. This much for typical Ardmore was peated to the usual medium level of around 14 ppm. Of course, this is using highland peat sourced from terrestrial vegetation rather than the Islay peat which is composed of ocean vegetation. Filled into a high-quality 2nd fill ex-bourbon barrel in July of 2009, it was bottled at cask strength of 57% abv without the use of coloring or chillfiltration. The resulting whisky is extremely expressi...

This wine is selected from Alex's best parcels and made in very small quantities. It is composed of 55% Chardonnay from the grand cru of Chouilly, 35% Pinot Noir from Sezanne and 15% old vine Meunier from Monthelon. It is entirely barrel fermented, and always aged more than 10 years on the lees. If you like a savory, rich, concentrated champagne with a ton of complexity, this tiny production bottle is for you. I love it with foie gras and rich appetizers! -Gary Westby, K&L

98 points James Suckling: "There is beauty here and the transparency is inspiring with dark berry, floral and mineral character. Full body and ultra-fine tannins. A glorious wine. A wine that will age for decades and beautiful now." (08/2018) 95 points Decanter: "One of the rare examples of perfect ripeness with balanced alcohol and acid. The Yamazaki Distillery doesn't release new products very often and when the Distiller's Reserve was release in Japan way back in 2014, we were excited to have a new Yamazaki to sell. It only took about a decade or so for them to release the product stateside and while critics hemmed and hawed about the lack of age statements, the public has embraced this release with gusto. Turns out there are some pretty incredible old whiskies in the blend, and it easily competes with the more expensive 12-year-old in the glass and many will even prefer the richer rob...

97 points Wine Advocate: "The 2022 Farvie Grenache hails from a warm and dry year, and this is the first time I've seen this wine—professionally or socially. The bouquet leads with graphite and raspberry leaf tea, iodine and crushed shells, rust and fresh blood, layers of white pepper and tobacco. Stylistically, I feel this 2022 is in line with the 2018, and it looks utterly sensational here today; it's elegant and complete, composed and detailed. It's very long through the finish and lingers and curls with wisps of incense spice, chalky tannins and Asia...

This super rare bottling is made with some of the nearly extinct, native grape varieties of Champagne. It is composed of 40% Petit Meslier, 40% Arbanne, and 20% Pinot Blanc. I think it is the best of the excellent Ariston portfolio. The nose has only hints of exoticism; the overall impression is of rich cream and toast, but underneath is a hint of pine and exotic white fruit from the old varieties. On the palate the Champagne makes for a double take: it is very rich and textural, but finishes with a laser beam of chalky acidity that just goes on and on. ...

96 points Wine Advocate: "The 2018 Farvie Syrah hails from a brilliant season in Western Australia. It was warm and dry but not too warm and not too dry. It was a great year for all varieties and all regions. This is the inaugural release of the Farvie Syrah, which I reviewed upon its release in March 2020. The defining quality that makes this wine great (apart from the vineyard site) is the winemaking and the old large-format French oak that it is matured in. The fruit doesn't take on obvious barrel characters, which allows the inherent delicacy and det...

This spectacular Champagne is one of the most sought after in France, and Launois' cult status made it very difficult for us to make a purchase. We lucked out, and now we buy it directly, nabbing a top-quality value. This house is from Mesnil, the southernmost Grand Cru in Champagne and home to both Salon and Krug's Clos de Mesnil. This Champagne is 100% Chardonnay and all Grand Cru from the villages of Mesnil, Oger, Cramant and Avize - a roll call of the finest crus for Chardonnay in all of Champagne. The Ariston's vineyards are vastly different than the other Blanc de Blancs producers that we carry. The steeper slopes, less chalk, and more fossils in the soil of Brouillet make for a rich, creamy style Chardonnay Champagne that will appeal to just about anyone. This is one of my favorite toasting Champagnes, as all of the flavors are up front, and it's open-knit and fun. It is a perfect way to start a party. (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne buyer)

Pliant, expansive red and dark berry preserve, rose pastille and mocha flavors become more energetic with air and show excellent detail. Impressively deep yet lively as well, finishing long and smooth, with harmonious tannins and lingering spice and floral character. 93 points Wine Advocate: "Released later than many others, the 2008 Roda I Reserva is a truly Atlantic, classical Rioja, with developed aromas of leather, blackberries and spicy and toasted sesame seed notes. The weaker vintages show the effect of the oak more evidently, but it is absorbed over time, much as I saw with the 1997–a somewhat similar vintage. This Atlantic has fresh notes than might feel a little herbal when young that turn into dry roses with a good decade in bottle. I see some earthy hints (peat), a combination of red and black fruit and t...

Originally a mysterious oddity only known to the hardest of the hardcore Kentucky bourbon fanatics, Black Maple Hill rode the popularity explosion in craft whiskey to its demise—almost. As the boom peaked, along with BMH's prices, the supply of their confidential, age-stated whiskeys essentially dried up and Black Maple Hill exited the market, it seemed. Undaunted, the brand's owner sought far and wide for new supply, and he found his diamond in the rugged and rough high plains of northeastern Oregon—the Steins family farm and distillery. Medium to full-bodied with black currants, ripe blackberry and black cherry notes framed by velvety tannins laced with that irresistible vanillin note. Toasty oak spices lend a hint of sweetness, balanced by grippy acidity. Long and complex, revealing umami, garrigue, and crushed slatestone on the finish. Jason Wilson of Vinous writes: "Describing itself as 'artisan—négociant—éleveur,' Baron de Lustrac works with about 20 small producers, focused on single-cask, single-vineyard, and often single-variety. José Barbe, who started the brand in 1994 with his partner Ina Bornemann, scours Armagnac to procure special barrels. In fact, some of Baron de Lustrac’s domaines may only produce a single barrel per year, and none produce more than 15. All of the Armagnacs are aged on the properties where they are produced, and like Darroze, the name of the original doma...

Champagne always tastes better out of magnum. Paul Vincent Ariston says that his 25-year-old vines reflect the vintage, but the Prestige, made from vines averaging 60 years, reflect his terroir. It is composed of 50% Chardonnay, 25% Pinot Noir, and 25% Meunier. This was one of the best bottles from my last trip, and we drank two just to make sure! It has fantastic Brouillet black cherry power, and finishes very dry and super long. It is a powerhouse in the style of a vintage Bollinger, but with even more soul! This entry-level Barolo demonstrates that great results are achieved in 2009. If forced to inhabit a desert island that only served the wines of a single producer, I would want Luca Currado to be that supplier. He excels at everything he does from his castle perch at the heart of Castiglione Falletto. Despite the difficult 2009 season, his wines remain extr...

The Buselli Estate Oakville Cab is the definition of a hidden gem! After arriving in San Franciso in 1961, Italian immigrants Rosalia and Italo Buselli bought a small plot of land in the eastern hills of Oakville in 1988. In 1990 they planted 4 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyard is directly adjacent to Rudd Estate and also neighbors Dalla Valle, David Ramey's Pedregal Vineyard and Tierra Roja Vineyard. It's about as prime of a location as one could wish for in Napa Valley. For several decades the Buselli family farmed their vines and continued sup...

Balsam herb and rosemary-like aromas round off the finish. There is great freshness, some oak tannins, a drying finish and lots of rich fruit fiber.
