Elisabeth Goutorbe and her husband Jean-Marie Egrot run their tiny production Champagne house almost entirely by themselves. They get very little help from their cat Maurice, but can rely on Elisabeth’s father, René Goutorbe of Champagne Henri Goutorbe for a little bit of help. Of the 15 acres they own in Ay, Louvois, Tauxieres and Mutigny, they only keep the fruit from their 2.5 best—mostly in Ay, but also a touch of Louvois Chardonnay for balance. Their home straddles the border of Ay and Mutigny, two great terroirs in the Gand Valley of the Marne, whi...
Always a forerunner and fueled with commitment to the quality of their wines, the Tremblay family produces very distinctive wines with character and finesse. Tasting notes from the producer: "Dry, clear, lively and light with primary aromas."

97 points Sam Kim: "Splendidly perfumed and immensely complex, the wine shows sweet cherry, thyme, floral, cedar and earthy mushroom characters on the nose. The palate displays outstanding concentration and persistency, together with refined texture and flowing mouthfeel, finishing wonderfully long and seductive. It’s multi-layered and perfectly proportioned with a stunning line and length. " (08/2020) 96 points Bob Campbell: "Elegant, aromatic pinot noir with bright, high energy floral, violet, cherry, fresh herb, star anise and restrained spicy oak s...

This special onetime pricing on Speyburn's Arranta should not be missed. Toffee, vanilla, and spice dominate the profile of this USA exclusive bottling that comes from first fill ex-Bourbon casks and is bottled at 46% ABV. The classic Speyside distillery still uses wormtubs in its production and this leads to a full and rich spirit, perfectly matched to 1st first Bourbon casks.

98 points Tim Atkin: "2023 Chilean White Wine of the Year "I hope this won't sound like exaggeration, but I can't remember tasting a better Riesling from the New World in the last decade. Sourced from a single 0.7-hectare parcel in one of Chile's most beautiful vineyards, this is an unwooded marvel that used 20% skin fermentation. Celery and honeysuckle aromas lead you into a concentrated, perfectly balanced palate of lime, green apple and wet stones. Stunning." 2023-29" (04/2023) K&L Notes: Rafael Tirado owns one of Chile's truly original properties i...

Domaine Cherrier was founded in 1930. Since then four generations of the family have run the estate. The domaine has limestone and calcareous clay soils that wonderfully influence the character of the grapes grown there. The Sancerre is consistently delicious, with citrus, chalky minerality and light floral notes. Its dry finish complements seafood and cheese beautifully. K&L French Regional buyer Keith Mabry says: "The Cherrier to me is always one of the biggest crowd-pleasing Sancerres/Sauvignon Blancs from anywhere in the world."

Jancis Robinson: "As they don't grow anything but Chardonnay, they buy Pinot Noir from Paul Dethune in Ambonnay. 90% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Noir (as red wine). Stainless steel, 100% malo. Dosage 8.3 g/l. More fruity than their whites. Blood orange with a touch of sweetness that I didn’t find in the white wines. Lime bonbon. Dusty spices on the finish, like fine-ground walnut skin. This is very satisfying. Plump in the middle. Wonderful food rosé. (TC)" (05/2023) K&L Notes: This little bottle of rosé is delicious! This is the first time we have had th...

Sleek and transparent with a medium body and firm, fine tannins. Taut and mineral at the end. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold." (09/2022) 95 points Sam Kim: "Gorgeously styled and refined, the wine shows ripe cherry, smoked game, mushroom and toasted nut characters on the nose. We dreamed for years of creating a delicious, interesting expression of blended Scotch whisky that we could feature under our Faultline label at a value driven price. We were close many times, but either the quality of the whisky or the cost of the barrels proved prohibitive. We didn't want to make a $25 bottle of whisky just for the sake of it. After working on and off with our bottler for over a year-long blending process, we hammered out a profile we were finally happy with. Big smoke, Ardbeg-like peat flavors, and a kiss of sweet grain was our goal, ...

93 points John Gilman: "The 2009 Monte Real Gran Reserva is an excellent wine, offering up a complex and now nicely mature bouquet of red and black raspberries, Cuban cigar wrapper, cinnamon and clove-like spice tones, a lovely base of quite salty soil tones, a hint of celery seed and a lovely framing of cedary oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and starting to get quite velvety on the attack, with a lovely core and soil signature, still a fair bit of ripe tannin and a long, tangy and very complex finish. At twelve years of age, this wine i...

93 points Jeb Dunnuck: "A solid step up over the Tendresse d'Un Climate, the 2020 Côtes du Rhône Villages Valréas Passion D'Un Terre offers a more meaty, gamey, complex style as well as gorgeous old school-like notes of peppery herbs, toasted nuts, and peppery garrigue. Pure and focused, yet with plenty of mid-palate depth as well as richness, this gorgeous Valréas is going to drink nicely for a decade." At just 7.5 acres, Alexandre Le Brun is the smallest producer from Champagne that we import, or even carry. He only makes wine from half of the grapes he brings in, selling the rest off to négociants. His production is just one thousand cases a year total. This tiny scale allows Alex to do nearly everything himself and his hands-on approach shows through in the finished product. He only uses his own estate fruit for his Champagne, and, although small, it is diverse. He farms 22 plots in eight different villages. Among these are some of the oldest vines i...

92 points Wine & Spirits: "This benchland wine highlights the foggy coolness of Santa Maria’s transverse valley, with its citrusy, mildly nutty nose and lemon-lime flavors, fresh and linear, crackling with bright acidity. It’s a seafood wine to pour with Dungeness crab cakes. (PJC)" (10/2021) 90 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Buttered citrus, honeysuckle, green almond, and white flower notes emerge from the 2019 Chardonnay Santa Maria Valley, a rich, medium-bodied Chardonnay that has good purity, moderate acidity, and a great finish." The unprecedented Tres Vieux Brut de Fut is one of the most memorable and unique offerings from any producer in Cognac. Bouju is well known for speaking out in the region against the use of additives and has carved out a niche as one of the few Grand Champagne producers willing to offer unfiltered, uncut, full-strength Cognac. This brandy is the house's top offering and represents some of the oldest stocks with a minimum age of 40 years. The color is dark like coffee and when we inquired about that insanely dark color, Bouju explained that long term agin...

95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Coming all from the Funsten Ranch in the Dry Creek Valley and 100% Zinfandel, the 2021 Zinfandel East Bench has a rich, more subtle style in its aromatics, with ripe plum, cigar, spice, and earthy nuances, and it certainly plays in the darker, red and black-fruited end of the spectrum. These all carry over to the palate, where the wine is medium to full-bodied, has a deep, expansive, concentrated mouthfeel, velvety tannins, terrific mid-palate density, and a gorgeous finish. This richly textured, incredibly impressive Zinfandel ne...

The rare Blanton's Gold has become beloved by connoisseurs and collectors world wide. The ultimate single barrel bourbon and founder of the category, Blanton's has become one of the most asked for and hardest to obtain bourbons on the market today. We've found some limited stocks of European-bound product that would otherwise have not been available. The famous "Gold" Blanton's is so named for its unique golden horse and golden writing. Full-bodied yet refreshing, with very understated wood, it's polished and intense, with notes of raspberry, fig and rose and energetic acidity." (06/2022) 92 points James Suckling: "A fragrant garnacha with aromas of redcurrants, pomegranate, wild strawberries, thyme, lavender and lemon grass. Some oyster shell, too. Château de Sarenceau is a family property and the 4th generation runs it today. This small estate of only 9 hectares allows a precise and careful work of the vines. This is the first time we have carried this property and it was our biggest buy on April 2022 trip. Rare enough to be underlined, this Saint-Emilion is a 100% Merlot! It offers an evolved nose, with notes of truffle, plum and licorice. The mouth opens with a lot of fruit and freshness, and it finishes with ripe black fruit flavors. A great wine from a great vintage. Will cellar well 10 mor...

Lovely balance of ripe fruit and toasted-pastry notes with bright acidity. Delicious finish. Fantastic value, as always. " (03/2022) 95 points Wine & Spirits: "This wine showed its pedigree in our blind tasting, where its rich, layered orchard-fruit flavors were buttressed by well-integrated acidity. The beauty of the Thompson Brothers is that they're willing to take risks. This offering is indeed a risky proposition for a bottler, the very reason the big guys were willing to let it go. On paper it reads like a very expensive blended scotch. But why add an age statement, when a 12-year-old Johnnie Walker is a fraction of the price? The age statement tells the entire story here and our friends at Dornoch care little for artificial labels and quality statements, all they care about is getting damn good whisky into your glass for an incredible price. So...

Winemaker Anthony Girard grew up in his family's Sancerre winery, but spent a number of years learning about wine production all over the world before returning home to continue working with Sauvignon Blanc. While helping with the namesake Girard label, Anthony wanted to create his own project on the side and eventually purchased a small plot of pristine real estate near the town of Récy, with primo Sancerre limestone soils. After acquiring the vines, he was given a large key as a symbolic gesture of new ownership, a "clef du récit," which became the nam...

Beautiful grip, creamy texture with a strikingly powerful tannic frame. As the wine stays in the glass the floral aromatics begin to bloom up. A brilliant Opus. 20 days maceration - around half what it would have been a decade ago. 54% native yeast, as part of their native yeast project. 5% Merlot and 1% Malbec complete the blend...

The Millet Sancerre has been a favorite here at K&L for a long time. Grown in limestone-clay soil, the wine reflects the terroir wonderfully. This wine over-delivers and pairs beautifully with oily seafood dishes, and of course, your favorite cheeses.

95 points Vinous: "The 2018 GSM Gabilan Mountains is one the most complete wines I have ever tasted from Big Basin. The blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre works so well here. A blast of dark, sepia-toned fruit makes a strong opening statement. Leather, tobacco, incense and dried herbs develop in the glass, filling out the layers nicely. This bold Rhône blend delivers the goods, big time. The blend is 39% Grenache, 35% Syrah and 26% Mourvèdre. 100 points James Suckling: "Dark ruby, purple color. Aromas of blackcurrants, black truffle, crushed stone, licorice and hints of tar. Full-bodied, deep and vertical on the palate, drawing you in and down. The structure is very tannic and powerful, yet the tannins are folded into the wine. The Ariston's vineyards are vastly different than those of the other blanc de blancs producers that we carry. The steeper slopes, less chalk and more fossils in the soil of Brouillet make for a rich, creamy style of Chardonnay Champagne that will appeal to just about anyone. This is one of my favorite toasting Champagnes. All of the flavors are up-front; it is open-knit and fun. It is a perfect way to start a party. (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne buyer)

This Champagne comes from one plot of 70-year-old Chardonnay vines in the Montagne of Reims village of Trepail. It is aged for three years on the lees. As one would expect from such ancient vines, it delivers the goods on the finish with plenty of chalk as well as a bit of honey and white fruit. This makes a perfect aperitif, but will also pair well with seafood such as seared scallops or even raw oysters. (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne buyer)

98 points Wine Advocate: "The 2019 Pinot Noir Gestalt Block is a stunning Pinot Noir that was reticent and wound in an earlier tasting but has blossomed into a kaleidoscopic beauty. Its perfume is heavenly and changes with each return to the glass: violet and graphite give way to red cherry and pomegranate preserves, which in turn segues to nuances of tobacco leaves, bitter orange and woodsmoke. The palate is equally compelling, its deep core of fruit streaked with touches of iron and haunting floral perfume. It has a frame of powdery tannins, focused ac...

The wines of Aurore Dezat are a regular feature in our wine club offerings, and her vibrant Sancerre is an easy favorite among K&L staff as well.
