2013 Selbach Pinot Blanc $18.99
Italy known for good large, co-operative wineries. (A few good co-ops exist in other regions, but not lots of them in one region.) This top-notch wine comes from the co-op Erste + Neue, which is right in the center of Caldaro, one of the small towns on the "Wine Road" south of Bolzano. They make the range of white wines that you would expect, Sauvignon, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris (and an excellent Müller Thurgau). Gerhard Sanin, the enologist for E+N, favors a bright, restrained winemaking style that really allows this place and these varieties to shine.
The 2012 Abtei Muri Sudtirol "Weiss" is a blend of 70% Pinot Bianco and 30% Pinot Grigio grown in the village of Appiano/Eppan in a southeast facing vineyard with predominantly gravelly limestone soils at elevations from 1500 to over 2000 feet, with vines aged 20-30 years. The wines from this area exhibit a persistent saltiness to go along with the excellent acidic balance. Winemaker Christian Werth ferments in stainless steel and then ages it for 15 months in large wooden casks with a weekly lees stirring. This wine can age easily for another 5-8 year... Read More »
This white is soft, creamy and lush, a bit reminiscent of lemon meringue pie, with sweet citrus scents and flavors wrapped in spice. Delicious on its own, this is not a wine that needs a three-course meal to taste good. Try it as an alternative to Chardonnay at your next party. Pinot Blanc has a long tradition in Alsace, and this is an easy-going example to get to know.
Wine Enthusiast: "A new brand produced by the Sparr family, Baumann’s fruit comes from Riquewihr. This easy Pinot Gris is soft and medium sweet, with attractive hints of spice and minerality. It’s a ripe wine, finished with acidity. Drink now." (4/2015)
Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Aromas of papaya, vanilla custard and hazelnut. The succulent apricot and spice flavors are given shape and life by bright acidity. A serious wine with an austere but pure finish of noteworthy length." (1/2013)
According to the winery: "Our Pinot Blanc is produced from our usual Pinot Blanc and Auxerrois blend (35%/65%) originating from both Herrenweg vineyard (50%) and Rotenberg vineyard (50%). This combination works perfectly as the later ripening red limestone of the Rotenberg brings structure and acidity, whether the warm precocious alluvial Herrenweg brings richness and aromatics. Pinot Blanc will probably become more important as it keeps better acidity balance in warm vintages. In 2013, there was no such concern and it was easy to obtain the perfect bala... Read More »
90 points Wine Enthusiast: "The wine is rich, full in the mouth and delicious. With its creamy texture, baked apple flavors and sprinkling of spice, it’s a dense and ripe wine that could be drunk now, but which will be better in 2016." (12/2014) Wine Spectator: "Floral and lightly honeyed, this fresh white is focused by racy acidity and a streak of stony mineral. Lacy and lithe, with ripe apricot and blood orange notes. Drink now through 2017." (10/2014)
An explosion of aromas welcome you; apricot, banana and lychee combine with notes of apple on the nose. An invitingly fresh tangerine flavor is followed by grapefruit and lime zest.
A delightful blend of 70% Chardonnay and 30% Pinot Blanc, from the village of Corgoloin.
Regarded as one of Germany's top producers of Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), Friedrich Becker also produces outstanding white wines, including this delicious Pinot Blanc from the limestone soils of the Pfalz. Picked at optimum ripeness with naturally high acidity and fermented in stainless steel, this Pinot Blanc is crisp, clean, and refreshing, with cool melon and stone fruit aromas and flavors underscored by some serious wet stone minerality. Citrus blossom accents add lift to the nose and palate. There's nice weight here, balanced by tangy acidity, leadi... Read More »
94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of my favorite white wines from Northern Italy, the 2011 Alto Adige Pinot Bianco Riserva Vorberg is dazzling and impressive on both the nose and in the mouth. It offers a full package of varietal purity with aromas of pear, quince, Golden Delicious apple and honeysuckle. Aged 12 months in large oak casks, it imparts a seductively rich and creamy texture on the long finish. This beauty promises to age ten years or more and will develop more mineral nuances as it continues its bottle evolution. (ML)" (10/2014) K&L Notes: From Alto Adige, here is a Pinot Bianco that...
