2008 Bisceglia Aglianico del Vulture "Gudarrà" (Elsewhere $22) Top Pick!
2008 Bisceglia Aglianico del Vulture "Gudarrà" (Elsewhere $22)

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Bisceglia’s 2008 Aglianico del Vulture Gudarra is one of the very best wines readers will find in this price range. Layers of expressive dark fruit cover every inch of the palate in a vivid, textured Aglianico that impresses from start to finish. Hints of mocha, grilled herbs and rosemary add complexity over time. The dazzling, racy Gudarra is best enjoyed over the next few years. It is another superb value. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2018. (AG)" (2/2013) Wine Enthusiast: "This is a generous and powerful expression of Aglianico, with angular edges, tight tannins and a lasti ...Read More »

2010 Angelo Germano "Rué" Barolo (Previously $65)

93 points James Suckling: "Aromas of tar and asphalt combined with strawberries follow through to a full-bodied, juicy Barolo with fine tannins and a beautiful acid/fruit balance. Long on the finish, and although a bit oaky now, this will be excellent in 2016." (8/2014) K&L Notes: Started by Angelo Germano in 1908, this estate has been run by the fourth generation of Germanos--Davide--since the 1990s. (Davide's first complete vintage was 1998.) This is sourced from the Rué Vineyard. The vineyard's soils are sandy marl, and the vines are farmed naturally, using Integrated Pest Management techn... Read More »

2012 Abtei Muri Sudtirol "Weiss" (Super Bianco) (Previously $30)

The 2012 Abtei Muri Sudtirol "Weiss" is a blend of 70% Pinot Bianco and 30% Pinot Grigio grown in the village of Appiano/Eppan in a southeast facing vineyard with predominantly gravelly limestone soils at elevations from 1500 to over 2000 feet, with vines aged 20-30 years. The wines from this area exhibit a persistent saltiness to go along with the excellent acidic balance. Winemaker Christian Werth ferments in stainless steel and then ages it for 15 months in large wooden casks with a weekly lees stirring. This wine can age easily for another 5-8 year... Read More »

2010 Angelo Germano "Mondoca di Bussia" Barolo (Previously $67)

Jancis Robinson: "Monforte d’Alba. Quite deep ruby with narrow orange rim – oak? Very closed and reluctant on the nose, with only a hint of bacon. Succulent fruit with a muscular tannic structure and multilayered finish, but not nearly ready. (17/20)" (6/2014) K&L Notes: Started by Angelo Germano in 1908, this estate has been run by the fourth generation of Germanos--Davide--since the 1990s.

2004 Rotaliana Teroldego "Clesurae" (Previously $26)

Wine Spectator: "Full, soft and fruity, with lots of wild raspberry and blackberry aromas and flavors and a soft texture." (6/2007) K&L Notes: The Teroldego wine is an indigenous varietal of Trentino which finds its ideal environment in the Piana Rotaliana. Teroldego seems to derive from "Tiroler Gold," the name that indicated this wine at the Court of Vienna under the Austro-Hungarian empire. From this name came the Tiroldico and finally Teroldego. Among the Trentino wines it is certainly the most famous and rightfully called the royal wine of Trentino.

2009 Vie di Romans "Ciampagnis Vieris" Chardonnay 375ml (Previously $16)

91 points James Suckling: "A rich and fruit Chardonnay with apple pie and milk aromas and flavors. Full and fruity, with lots going on. Always excellent." (12/2011)90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good, medium yellow color with gold highlights. Bright, pure aromas of tropical fruit, lime and white pepper. Dense, supple and fresh, offering bright orchard fruit, butter and pineapple flavors that gain depth and spiciness with air. In an exuberant, in-your-face, fruit-filled New World style, but avoids coming across as an over-the-top caricature. Serious unoaked chardonnay with impressive purity." 2011 Cantine Viola "Rosso Viola" Calabria (Previously $23)

Jancis Robinson: "Magliocco. Deep ruby with the beginning of orange on the nose. Pretty nose of oak and leafy fruit and already a little mature. Still a bit closed on the fruit on the palate and the tannins and acidity make it a little austere. Long perfumed finish with hints of oak. (WS)" (10/2013) K&L Notes: The 2011 Cantine Viola Rosso is 100% Magliocco from Calabria, and sees no wood aging at all, just fermentation in stainless steel and then bottle age. The wine’s aromatics are untamed; it smells of wild brush and roasted meats and while those aromatics are profound they seem to ... Read More »

2009 Tassi Brunello di Montalcino (Previously $50)

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Brunello di Montalcino is a pretty and nuanced wine that paints a more complete picture of the 2009 vintage. It opens to a compelling dark color and shows good density in the glass with dark ruby and garnet highlights. The bouquet is masculine and savory with deep renderings of dried fruit, spice, leather, cola and licorice. Within a few moments, very distant tones of black truffle and earthly highlights begin to emerge from the glass and give the wine that extra Sangiovese character you look for in Brunello. There’s more texture here as well. N ...Read More »

1997 Allegrini "Palazzo della Torre" Veneto (Previously $40)

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "An outstanding effort is the 1997 Palazzo della Torre. This dark ruby/purple-colored wine is full-bodied, dense, with Rhone-like beef blood and garrigue (that blend of earth and dried Provencal herbs) scents intertwined with copious quantities of black cherry and currant fruit. Rich, chewy, and impressive, it was aged in large 2,000 and 8,000 liter Slavonian wood foudres." (8/2000)

2009 Tassi "Franci" Brunello di Montalcino (Previously $90) Top Pick!
2009 Tassi "Franci" Brunello di Montalcino (Previously $90)

93 points James Suckling: "A wine with blueberry and chocolate character. Medium body with hints of orange peel and cocoa. Lot of dried strawberries too. A small Brunello production with soul. Top cuvée. Drink or hold." (2/2014)90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good full red. Sexy aromas of ripe raspberry, sweet spices, tobacco and quinine, plus mineral and truffle nuances. Fresh and vibrant on the palate, with a strong spine of acids and tannins nicely supporting the wine's underlying rich, ripe red-fruit sweetness. Finishes with excellent length and balance." 2009 Dei "Sancta Catharina" Toscana (Elsewhere 45)

94 points James Suckling: "A wine with lovely ripe fruits such as strawberries and cherries with hints of new wood. Full and very velvety with a pretty balance between fruit, wood and acidity. Always excellent. Cabernet Sauvignon. Better in 2014." (8/2012)90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Sancta Catharina is 30% Sangiovese, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Syrah and 10% Petit Verdot, aged in French oak barrels. It is a decidedly powerful, structured wine bursting with blackberry jam, violets, menthol, licorice and French oak. (AG)" (6/2012)90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Dark ruby. 2008 Tassi "Franci" Brunello di Montalcino Riserva (Previously $120)

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2008 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Franci lays on good foundations despite the overall austerity of the 2008 vintage. True to the Riserva moniker, there’s an extra dose of intensity here, a riper style, bright acidity at the back and an added layer of firmness or astringency to the tannins. Even the alcohol feels slightly warmer in the 2008 Riserva compaired to the two 2009 Brunellos although it is not (14% compared to 14.5% for the two 2009 wines). In summary, this wine does exactly with Brnello Riserva should do: It brings you a little bit more of ...Read More »

2008 Sesta di Sopra Brunello di Montalcino

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Sesta di Sopra’s 2008 Brunello di Montalcino is rather closed in its aromatics, but is more expressive on the palate, where layers of dark red fruit come alive. Smoke, tar, licorice, scorched earth and smoke add an attractive element of gravitas on the finish. Deceptively medium in body, the 2008, nevertheless, packs a serious punch. The long, superbly delineated finish bodes well for the future, but the 2008 needs time in bottle to settle down a bit more. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026." 2009 La Mozza "Aragone" Maremma Toscana (Previously $38)

90 points Wine & Spirits: "Scents of dried cherries and candied orange give this a sense of sweetness, but the wine is dry, with a dusty soil character and bitter chocolate tannins. A blend of sangiovese with alicante, syrah and carignan, this is juicy, firm and Italianate in its lasting, Baroque complexity." (4/2014)

2012 Tenuta Fiorano Bianco (Previously $45)

A blend of Grechetto and Voignier, this wine ages 'sur lies' in 10-hectoliter oak and chestnut barrels. The color is a clear, golden-yellow, the result of sitting on the lees. The aromas are surprisingly complex, mineral, intense yet elegant, with a pleasing fruit component that is not too ripe. There is white peach, medlar and perhaps some fresh almond, along with flint and gentian flower. The flavor is balanced, soft, piquant and perfectly upheld by a brackish, Mediterranean acidity.
