92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A collaboration between Napa's Joel Gott and Dave Phinney, the semi-opaque 2012 Cotes Catalanes Grenache is a smoking blend of 100% Grenache that comes from the singular, black schist soils located around the village of Maury, in the Agly Valley in the Roussillon. Aged in French oak (a small part being new) and hitting 15.6% natural alcohol, this sexy, full-bodied, pedal-to-the-metal effort bears plenty of resemblance to the old-vine, 100% Grenache efforts coming from Chateauneuf du Pape. Kirsch liqueur, blackberry, toasted spice, garrigue and hints of v ...Read More »
In the region of Cariñena, the Garnacha grape variety seems to find a lovely expression, one which is less high octane and lighter on its feet than in some of the neighboring regions. And, as ever, this is a terrific red wine bargain for anyone looking for an inexpensive house red or wine for any party, wedding, or other event.
91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "(raised entirely in concrete): Brilliant ruby. Pure, high-pitched aromas of redcurrant, strawberry, blood orange and fresh rose, plus a bright mineral overtone. Vibrant and precise on the palate, offering sappy red fruit and floral pastille flavors lifted by spice and mineral nuances. Closes spicy, nervy and long, with silky tannins making a late appearance. Finding a wine with this much clarity and precision is a tough job at double and even triple the price of this one." (9/2014)90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Made from vines planted in 1915, the 2013 Garnacha Negra comes from the vil ...Read More »
92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The terrific 2012 Tres Picos is one of the finest inexpensive, Grenache-based wines made in the world. This full-bodied beauty boasts a deep ruby color as well as loads of strawberry and black cherry fruit, hints of lavender and crushed rocks, sweet tannin, and a broad, savory mouthfeel. It, too, should be consumed over the next 3-4 years. This has long been a popular source for value-priced wines. Founded in 1958 in the appellation of Campo de Borja, Borsao owns a whopping 3,706 acres of vineyards planted at elevations of 1,300 to 2,300 feet above sea ...Read More »
93 points James Halliday: "*Special Value Selection* A blend of Garnacha Tinto (Grenache by any other name) and Touriga, part coming from McLaren Vale (Garnacha) and part from the Barossa. It is a joyously schizophrenic blend, half saying drink without any introspection or hesitation, the other inviting deconstruction of the very different spice influences, and also the differing appeal of the raspberry and cherry fruit flavours." (3/2014) K&L Notes: Winemaker's Notes: "This is our first Tinto that is made solely from Grenache and Touriga Nacional, two of my favourite red grape varieties. Thi... Read More »
93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Their inexpensive offering is the 2012 Veraton, a 100% Grenache aged in 60% new French and 40% American oak for 17 months before being bottled without filtration. It is a powerful, full-throttle, pedal-to-the-metal red boasting a dense purple color, and a sweet blackcurrant and black cherry fruit, lavender, licorice and earth notes intermixed with a touch of new oak. Stylistically, this is a modern, massively intense, rich wine that over-delivers in many ways. However, it is not for consumers looking for shy, restrained and delicate wines. It should drin ...Read More »
Sella & Mosca is a beautiful and historic winegrowing estate in Sardinia which places great emphasis on their traditional winemaking values enabled by modern cellars. In the most outstanding vintages, Sella & Mosca produces this Cannonau Riserva bottling from grapes picked in select vineyard parcels of this most traditional red Sardinian varietal. Aged for two years in oak casks prior to release, this aristocratic red will sustain a decade or more of aging. The ruby color introduces a nose marked by violet and spice which reverberate on the palate with ... Read More »
Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Cinsault and Mourvedre make this lush and fruity CdR a reward for what the winery calls, a "vintage of patience." Demeter certified Biodynamic®.
97 points James Halliday: "Hand-picked grapes were open-fermented and hand-plunged before spending 14 months in used French puncheons; Pannell recommends decanting several hours before drinking. Medium crimson colour introduces a wine that is eager to display its fragrant red fruits on the bouquet and on entry to the palate before persistent, fine-grained tannins make their presence felt. They are fundamental to both the present and future character of the wine, which will change with age, but in absolute terms be neither of higher or lesser quality than it is now." 90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright red. Smoky, spice-accented raspberry and cherry on the perfumed nose, with a bright floral accent building with air. Brisk and racy, offering fresh red fruit and rose pastille flavors and a hint of blood orange. I might have guessed this to be pinot. Finishes taut and clean, with a lingering redcurrant note and lacy tannins sneaking in slowly." (9/2014) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2013 Camino de Navaherreros is produced with Garnacha and some bought grapes and a dash of Tempranillo that they have in one of their vineyards from granite soils at 700- to 800-meter altitudes c ...Read More »
96 points James Halliday: "Made from 80-year-old Grenache vines, plus a small amount of young Tempranillo, it has good hue and depth; the bouquet is full of red fruits, and the wine takes off on the vibrant and intense palate, with an altogether singular purity and finesse." (7/2014) K&L Notes: Winemaker's Notes: "Bright, ruby red in colour with vibrant purple hues. A lifted nose displaying enticing aromatics of rhubarb, raspberries, plums, with hints of caraway seed, anise and subtle white pepper spice. Contrasting on the palate with rich flavoursome red cherries balanced by a bright acid str... Read More »
Decanter World Wine Awards 2014 Commended this red, describing it as having "fleshy jammy red fruit on the nose. The palate of red fruit is rich supple and prolonged."
From the winery: "Our much anticipated pink wine made from 100+ year old Grenache Gris vines. This year we made 50% like a white wine (whole cluster press to neutral French Oak barrels) and 50% was de-stemmed and left to soak on the skins for 24 hours in an open top wood vat before pressing and then on to neutral barrels. Spontaneous fermentation occurred in barrel followed by naturally occurring malolactic fermentation. We bottled unfined and unfiltered on February 23, 2015. Strawberry, tangerine and melon excite the senses for what follows. A moment t... Read More »
A blend of 60% Garnacha (25 year-old vines on extremely windy, sandy vineyards) and 40% Cariñena (30 year-old vines on a warmer site) that are farmed organically and co-fermented, this is a fun new addition to our Catalan section. Young winemaker Francesc Ferre may only be 26 years old, but the wine he makes in Corbera d'Ebre is delicious and already at a high qualitative level. Medium weight aromas of cherries and red fruits show a slightly earthy character, and lead to a clean palate of equal parts red and dark skinned fruits. There is a lively, juicy ... Read More »
91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Pale to medium garnet-purple in color, the 2012 Grenache is scented of kirsch, black raspberries and allspice with hints of black and white pepper. Full-bodied, rich and satiny textured in the mouth, it offers plenty of red fruit and baking spice layers in the long finish. Drink it now to 2019+. (LPB)" (2/2014)91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Vivid red. Lush, expressive aromas of fresh raspberry and cherry compote, with a spicy top note adding vivacity. Silky and sweet, offering intense red berry, floral pastille and spice cake flavors that gain weight in the glass. Finishes silky and lo ...Read More »

93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Glass-staining ruby. Pungent aromas of cassis, blueberry, smoky minerals, potpourri, licorice and spicecake. Juicy, supple and perfumed on the palate, with bright acidity lifting black and blue fruit, violet pastille and allspice flavors. Finishes very long and gently tannic, with suave oak tones coming up slowly." (10/2014)92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2012 Alto Moncayo, pure Garnacha from a warm, extremely dry and early vintage is extremely young and oaky with a nose full of vanilla, cinnamon, clove and smoke along with ripe blackberries, some cereal hints and notes of café a ...Read More »
One of the latest offerings from Priorat's Sao del Coster, this Garnacha based wine shows chewy red fruit flavors that betray admirable freshness, with a hint of macerated orange peel I frequently find in Spain's Mediterranean climate examples of Garnacha. This is not at all shy, but a great example of the intensity of flavor and beautiful fruit expression in the new era in Priorat. (Joe Manekin, K&L Spanish & Portuguese wine buyer)
90 points Wine Spectator: "This dense red shows a savory character, with tar, ink and licorice notes framing the core of plum and meat flavors. Features firm, well-integrated tannins and fresh acidity. Distinctive. Drink now through 2018." (10/2014) K&L Notes: The Calatayud D.O. sits in the arid Aragon region of Northeast Spain. Here Garnacha reigns supreme, producing wines that are richly fruited, but with pH's that are relatively low, which highlights the wines' bright fruit and freshness. Bodegas Breca has produced very highly rated wines in the past, though it is this vintage that truly st... Read More »
Always a bargain, the Las Rocas Garnacha comes from an excellent co-op in Spain's Calatayud region. Aged in a combination of French and American oak barrels for 10 months. Hearty, medium-bodied with boisterous dark fruit and an undercurrent of cocoa and vanilla spice.
If you're looking for a dessert wine to pair with something chocolate, there's nothing like a glass of Vin Doux Naturel. This traditional wine from the Southern Rhone is made entirely from fortified Grenache Noir. Cave de Rasteau's version is made from 50- to 90-year-old vines with a maximum yield of 30hl/hc--less than a bottle of wine per vine, according to the winery. Rich and powerful, with mellow sweetness, it makes the end of a meal a decadent treat.
93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Light, bright red. Exotically perfumed scents of candied red berries, white flowers and incense, with a vivid mineral overtone. Tangy, focused and pure, offering intense raspberry and cherry flavors that pick up a rose pastille nuance with air. This concentrated yet lithe wine finishes with excellent clarity and youthful tannic grip." (9/2013) K&L Notes: In the Sierra de Gredos mountains, just to the south of Madrid, some pretty amazing Garnacha is being made around the village of San Martin de Valdeiglesias. Catalan winemaker Marc Isart Pinos is taking old vines,... Read More »
Wine Spectator: "Smooth and compact, this red offers cherry, vanilla and light smoky notes, with accents of herb and licorice. A bit candied in character, but has lively acidity." (8/2014) K&L Notes: This delicious, 100% Garnacha from the Aragon "Garnacha Belt" D.O. of Campo de Borja, shows all the bright red cherry fruit you'd expect form this grape variety, with the added richness, texture and length which old vines deliver in this portion of Spain. A whole lot of value for the money.
Antonio Galloni: "(made with 15% whole clusters and aged in 15% new oak): Ruby-red. Raspberry and cherry aromas are complemented by suggestions of white pepper and flowers. Round and juicy in the mouth, offering gently sweet red fruit flavors and hints of licorice and peppery bitterness. Finishes on a warm note, with good cling and gentle tannins." (12/2014)
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The tasty, dark ruby-hued 2012 Grenache Estate is a 1,000-case blend of 85% Grenache and 15% Syrah. Aged in 620-gallon foudres and concrete tanks, it nicely conceals its 15.1% alcohol with plenty of kirsch liqueur and raspberry fruit, a medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, beautiful purity and a sexy texture. This is a top-flight effort from one of the earliest Grenache practitioners in Northern California. Drink it over the next 4-5 years. (RP)" (12/2014)
94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2012 Arroyo del Tórtolas is one of their single-vineyard reds, in this case it’s a north facing-slope of 1.25 hectares, planted with 2,200 plants per hectare that are 65 years old. The soil is quite thin and poor, rich in granite. Fermentation is carried out in oak tinas (vats), with stems, but on a higher or lower proportion depending on the vintage, and foot trodden. Malolactic fermentation is in used barriques of different sizes (from 225 to 600 liters) made of French oak where the wine ages for one year. This is the plot of vines that gets more c ...Read More »
92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2012 El Hombre Bala is pure Garnacha from different vineyards in Cadalso de los Vidrios from purchased grapes. If you know previous vintages of this wine, this 2012 has a lot less oak and extraction. Also this ruby-colored red is sporting a fresher, more precise nose dominated by wild red berries and hints of spices and herbs. The palate is medium-bodied with perfectly integrated oak, unnoticeable in fact, and very good balance and freshness before ending with the taste of cherries in liqueur. It's quite hedonistic and lush. Uvas Felices belongs to ...Read More »

96 points Wine Spectator: "This delivers stunningly pure fruit, with silky layers of raspberry, boysenberry and blackberry coulis that cascade over each other, backed by subtle dried anise and warm ganache notes. This is Bonny Doon's "Clos, but no Cigare" blend, a fresh and fruity early release composed mainly of Grenache--well, just enough Grenache to call it such on the label, 75%, with 17% Syrah and 8% Mourvèdre--that is too, well, fresh and fruity to be reserved for the Doon's longer-aging, "serious"--well, relative to Bonny Doon and winemaker-trickster Randall Grahm's reputation for seriousness goes--Châteauneuf-du-Pape style blend. 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A new cuvee, the 2013 Vin de France La 8 Grenache is a stunner that was aged in 1-3-year-old barrels before being bottled in November of 2014. It delivers terrific notes of ripe black and red raspberry, licorice and crushed flowers to go with building richness, medium-bodied depth and a seamless, pure style on the palate. From the winery "Our 4th year making this El Dorado blend of Grenache from the Fenaughty, & Swansboro vineyards. This lively mineral laden red wine stays on our summer table and sings with most anything coming off the grill. 2013 boasts more savory elements than previous vintages. Blend: 100% Grenache w/ 15% Whole cluster Maceration: Wild yeast, wood vat, 12-16 days Barrel aging: 7 months in neutral FO barrels Bottled: Unfiltered on May 23, 2014 Production: 350 cases Release date: Summer 2014"
94 points James Halliday: "Scented elegance. Nothing overly sweet to the profile here. Redcurrant, cherry, aniseed, earth/spice. Tangy. Not thick or dense, but it makes an impression. Tannin is internally routed in a completely seamless/velvety fashion." K&L Notes: This tiny production wine (just 574cs) is from Yangarra estate's almost 70 year old Grenache vines. Planted in 1946, these non-trellised, head trained vines grow in deep weathered sand stone soils. They are dry farmed and produce limited yields of beautifully aromatic, complex and layered fruit. Russell From is the man behind Herman Story Wines, a Central Coast phenomenon since 2001. Unpretentious, unmanipulated, and undeniably good wines. 92 points Wine Spectator for the 2010 vintage of Late Bloomer: "Offers perfumed red berry scents, with rich red fruit saturating the palate, expanding to red and black licorice notes and ending with gripping tannins that hold the flavors in place. Drink now through 2024." (03/2014)
89 points Wine Spectator: "A plush, opulent style that emphasizes ripeness, capturing, though not taming, the essence of plump, racy Grenache. The coarse texture provides a small quibble. Drink now through 2018." (12/2012) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "At first, the 2010 On The Road is beautifully focused, with great purity and nuance. Sweet red cherries, roses, mint, anise and spices all come together nicely in this flashy, extroverted wine. Here, too, the alcohol is evident at times, but texturally the wine is quite beautiful.
