Valdespino "Inocente" Fino Jerez

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The NV Fino Inocente must be one of the few wines in Jerez that is still fermented in 600-liter American oak botas, which is an incredible amount of work compared with fermenting tens of thousands of kilos of grapes (or even more) in a big stainless steel tank. This method was the norm of yesteryear, but is so labor intense that it was discontinued in most wineries, and gives a big diversity of wines, as each barrel has its own character, which contributes to the complexity of the blend. Furthermore, the bottled wine is on average 8 to 10 years old. One ...Read More »

Lustau Almacenista Oloroso "Pata de Gallina" (500ml)

92 points Wine & Spirits: "Juan García Jarana, the motorcycle magnate of Jerez, sells a portion of his soleras to Lustau for this delicate Oloroso. It starts with notes of candied almonds, coconut palm syrup and caramel. The hint of salinity lends complexity and freshness, without diminishing that delicate, pleasing sweetness." (6/2009)92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Just add this oloroso to the growing list of excellent Sherries from Lustau. This one is tellingly nutty on the nose, thus the hazelnut and walnut flavors are expected as they become part of a bigger painting that includes coffee, bitter chocolate an ...Read More »

Tio Pepe (Gonzalez Byass) Fino Sherry

Jancis Robinson: "Fresh, riper fruit than the Barbadillo Manzanilla -- such a good, reliable brand! Great concentration and purity. (RH)" (4/2013) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Talking about which, the NV Tio Pepe Fino is an icon of Sherry wine. Produced from Palomino grapes aged in the Tio Pepe solera for an average of four years under flor. It has a light nose of dried flowers, almonds and olives, in a subtle way and a dry palate dominated by the chalky notes. Light and easy to drink, it is a good introduction to Fino Sherry. Lustau "San Emilio Solera Reserva" Pedro Ximénez Jerez

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "*Editors' Choice* With piercing aromas of raisin pudding, molasses and spice, this rolls out the welcome mat and more. Luscious is probably as tame as you can put it; this is a ribald sweet wine with acidic backbone and hugely intense flavors of baked brown sugar, cinnamon cake and molasses. Powerful but still racy due to bracing acidity. About as good as it gets with PX." (6/2009)92 points Wine & Spirits: "The exuberant and saturated sweet flavors of sun-ripened grapes spread throughout the entire palate, sustained by firm acidity. La Guita Manzanilla Sanlucar de Barrameda (375ml)

Offers plenty of fruit, but remains grounded thanks to the briny character. Expressive and balanced. Drink now." (11/2012)90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The NV La Guita Manzanilla has always had a very strong and marked character of brine, green olives and mustard seeds, with an overall sweet sensation. Hidalgo "La Gitana" Manzanilla en Rama

Jancis Robinson: "Orange peel, mushroom, apple, citrus – much more expressive on the palate and nose than the regular La Gitana. Long, intense and smooth. Huge concentration. Lustau East India Solera

92 points Wine & Spirits: "This is a selection from botas of Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez raised separately and then blended to age for three years in solera. The result puts the sweetness of the PX in front, with flavors of plum jam and tobacco. The salinity of the Oloroso brings freshness and fine minerality that play softly in the background." (6/2011)90 points Wine Enthusiast: "This traditional wine from Lustau is made in the Cream style. It’s dark and pretty, with PX-ish prune and caramel aromas. La Cigarrera Manzanilla Sanlucar de Barrameda (375ml)

A wonderful expression of Manzanilla, the La Cigarrera always comes to us very fresh, expressing the briny, sea air quality for which these wines are known. It is bone dry, appley and has suggestions of loquat fruit and pits, with terrific complexity, no doubt due to the bodega's prime location in the "barrio bajo" section of Sanlucar, as well as its use of an amazing eight criaderas (the norm for these wines is three-to-four). So there is a depth of flavor for Manzanilla which is rare. Enjoy this as a perfect aperitif, or with olives, almonds, shrimp an... Read More »

Hidalgo "Napoleon" Amontillado Sanlucar de Barrameda (500ml)

(2/2007) Wine & Spirits: "Subtle in its salinity while generous in its nutty flavors, this approachable Amontillado ends on light caramel flavors. For an aperitif with aged goat cheese." (6/2011) K&L Notes: What a terrific Amontillado! Gently toasted nut and candied citrus aromas lead to a subtle, elegant, nutty palate. It has a beautiful, perfumed nose of dry flowers, very elegant and clean, subtle, with some saline notes, both in the nose and the palate, where it is balanced, medium-bodied and elegant. Give it time in the glass and spicy scents emerge, along with an intriguing fruitiness." (10/2013)90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The non-vintage Fino offers up aromas and flavors of sea salt and roasted nuts. It is excellent as an aperitif or as an accompaniment to sushi." It recalls the coasts of Jerez with aromas and flavors of iodine, salt and the signature earthy dampness of Hidalgo's very old soleras. Firm on the palate, with sharp acidity that penetrates the depths of the wine's flavors, this would be delicious with clams sautéed in olive oil and garlic." It was traditionally aged in the Calle Ponce (Ponce Street), and if has kept the C.P. initials since then. It’s not age-certified, but the average age of the bottled wine is 25 years. With time in the glass, smoky notes and nut confit flavors emerge with force. This is ideal for sipping slowly after a heavy dinner." Cesar Florido Moscatel Especial Chipiona (375ml)

Wine & Spirits: "Notes of chocolate, cinnamon and clove are the main focus of this simple, juicy Moscatel, a suave match for crema catalana." (10/2013) K&L Notes: Cesar Florido, aka "Mr. Moscatel," produces sweet, fortified wines from Moscatel grapes, which thrive in the sandy soil of Chipiona (very proximate to Sanlucar de Barrameda). The sugar laden grapes are pressed and then ferment to about 2 degrees, at which point boiled grape must ("arope" in Spanish) is added and then the mixture is fortified up to 15% abv and aged for a year prior to being bottled. It is a very serious Oloroso, even if it’s not totally dry. It offers bitter almonds, hazelnuts, incense, Cuban cigar ash, and dark chocolate as well as a complex, a very intense, round and ample palate. This wine really fills your mouth. Equipo Navazos "La Bota de Fino Que va para Amontillado" #45

This is a rare bottling of very mature Fino from Perez Barquero in Montilla Moriles, the area outside of the Sherry triangle, close to Córdoba. As in Jerez, Montilla has very chalky vineyards and a rich tradition of producing fortified wine in the solera system. The difference here is that the main grape variety is Pedro Ximenez (not Palomino). As a result, the finos are richer, less saline, but still marked by flor. Spanish rum aged in the finest Oloroso casks in the world? Yes, please! Sanchez Romate Vinagre de Jerez Reserva (375ml)

"It's all about the ingredients," is a common refrain you'll hear from chef after chef. This is true of the simplest things, like vinegar. And the adage doesn't only apply in professional kitchens. Los Abandonados Oloroso 6/8 El Puerto de Santa María 500ml

This is a very cool find from our friend Alex Russan (of Alexander Jules). In Jerez, Alex befriended a fellow Sherry conocedor, who mentioned a friend who had inherited an old solera of 8 Oloroso barrels in El Puerto de Santa María. Apparently, this solera was begun in the early 1800's, and has been untouched, not at all topped off, for the past 40 years. The wine is accordingly intense, incredibly high in acid, and concentrated. It was selected from a 27-barrel solera of VERY OLD (50 year average age) Amontillado that typically is blended into the Amontillado VORS bottling at Argueso. The flavors are, as one would expect of Amontillado this old from one of the great historic houses in Sanlucar, pungent, complex, saline, citric, candied and yet, at the same time, bone dry. Rey Fernando de Castilla "Antique" Amontillado Jerez (500ml)

Lots of attention has recently been placed on the historic region and stunning wines of Jerez. Given all the newspaper articles, restaurant by-the-glass placements, even a serious new book on the topic, the spotlight has generally avoided Rey Fernando de Castilla. Now that we finally have the wines available to us in California, it is our intention to change that and spread the word about this wonderful house. Founded in 1999 by Jan Petterson, a Norwegian who is a long-time veteran of the Sherry trade, these are excellent Sherries across the board, parti... Read More »

Sacristia AB Manzanilla "Primera Saca 2013" Sanlucar de Barrameda (375ml)

This is a phenomenal "pasada" style of Manzanilla, selected at Barbadillo (the "AB" here stands for Antonio Barbadillo) and bottled en rama (unfiltered). It is simultaneously bright and pungent, rich, nutty and voluminous on the palate. Having enjoyed this on its own, with salty snacks, as well as with some pretty amazing, inventive seafood at A Poniente in El Puerto de Santa María, I can safely say that this is a must have for any fan of dry Sherry. Valdespino "Cardenal" Palo Cortado VORS (375ml) (Previously $200)

"Cardenal is a divergence of Calle Ponce Viejo Palo Cortado. The best barrels of Viejo CP get placed in the initial criadera of Cardenal. The wine is aged for over 30 years both biologically and oxidatively. Cardenal contains 4 criaderas and a solera in a total of 6 barrels. Notes: Intense mahogany in color with aromas of flowers, toasted nuts and apricots. The palate is bone dry but with a deep toasty flavor and a backdrop of fruit." (Polaner Selections)

Valdespino Amontillado "Coliseo" VORS Jerez (375ml) (Previously $200)

Jancis Robinson: "Exciting depth on the nose. Not the most concentrated Amontillado in this vast modern bodega full of very old wine but very attractively mellow. Fresher and more appealing than the older (and probably more admired by more experienced aficionados) Cardenal. 17.5/20 points." (6/2008) K&L Notes: From the winery: "The Soleras of our Very Old Rare Sherries were established towards the end of the 19th Century. Each individually registered bottle of the 'Valdespino V.O.R.S. Collection' represents over 100 years of careful selection by generations of expert oenologists. The ... Read More »

Alexander Jules Amontillado "Singular" K&L Single Barrel 19/27 Sanlucar de Barrameda

This is an exciting first for us here at K&L: our very own, hand-selected, exclusive barrel of Amontillado! Selected from a 27-barrel solera of VERY OLD (50 year average age) Amontillado that typically is blended into the Amontillado VORS bottling at Argueso. The flavors are, as one would expect of Amontillado this old from one of the great historic houses in Sanlucar, pungent, complex, saline, citric, candied and yet, at the same time, bone dry. There are too many nuances of aroma and flavor to mention in this truly special bottling. This is the second ... Read More »

Valdespino Oloroso "Su Majestad" VORS Jerez (375ml) (Previously $200)

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The NV Oloroso Solera de su Majestad VORS produced from Palomino grapes from the Carrascal vineyard, has aged in a solera for over 30 years. It has a bright mahogany color and a subtle nose of noble woods, walnuts, aromatic herbs, and a touch of brandy. The palate is quite gentle for a VORS. Very polished and round, with a pungent, intense feeling, it feels extremely old. One of the best Olorosos around, it’s old enough to have that extra complexity, but not to be too aggressive, as Olorosos can easily get when they’re very old. Drink 2013-2017. (LG) ...Read More »
