2011 Quinta do Vallado Douro

91 points James Suckling: "Tangy and fruity with plenty of dark fruits and lemon undertones. Full body, fine tannins and a fresh finish. Lovely balance." (8/2013) Wine Spectator: "A firm, fresh and balanced red, with muscular red plum, berry and currant flavors, supported by a sturdy structure. The minerally finish reveals hints of flint. (Web Only-2014)" K&L Notes: Quinta do Vallado's entry-level Douro D.O.C. bottling is sourced primarily from younger vineyards (80%) featuring Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, and Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo) plus an inclusion of old vineyards (20%) featuring those and other tradi... 2013 Quinta de Raza Vinho Verde

Crisp, appley, and very refreshing, Raza Vinho Verde combines Arinto with Azal, Trajadura and Loureiro to create a lightly fizzy, delicious white that is surprisingly persistent and serious for this inexpensive a white. Quinta de Raza is located in the eastern portion of the Vinho Verde D.O., an area that has soils rich in quartz and other minerals that put their imprint on the wine. It's the perfect post work, pre-dinner wine, though it's also great at table, where it should handle grilled vegetables, seafood, and quick stir fries equally well. A refres... Read More »

Caves Messias Santola "Crab Wine" Vinho Verde

Produced from Loureiro and Pederña grapes grown in the granitic soils of the Vinho Verde region, the Santola (or as we here are calling it, "the crab wine") is a delicious, spritely and refreshing white. It doesn't get much more traditional, thirst-quenching or seasonally perfect then this wine. Delicious, low in alcohol, slightly fizzy and way too easy to drink!

The bright finish is filled with spice and supported by fresh acidity." (10/2013)90 points Wine Enthusiast: "This is a hugely dry, burnt style, very concentrated. Ramos Pinto White Port

White port is one of the world's most civilized aperitifs, and we here at K&L think that the Ramos Pinto is one of the best. Made from Malvasia Fina and Codega grapes (mostly grown on the Ramos Pinto estate) that are picked quite ripe, this wine is then aged for three years in traditional port barrels called "pipes." Full-bodied and exotic, it is incomparable on the rocks with an orange twist. Since it has had extended barrel age and is fortified, it is no problem to have keep it in the refrigerator for a month after opening it, but I doubt it will last ... Read More »

2011 Casa Santos Lima "Bons Ventos" Vinho Regional Lisboa

Wine Spectator: "A juicy red, delivering vibrant and concentrated flavors of red raspberry, kirsch and dark plum, showing some peppery notes. Paprika accents appear on the finish. Castelão, Camarate, Tinta Miúda and Touriga Nacional. Drink now." (7/2013) K&L Notes: A blend of Castelao, Camarate, Tinta Miuda (also known as Graciano in Rioja) and Touriga Nacional, this is a lovely wine from vineyards not too far away from Lisbon. 2011 Quinta de Saes Dão

Can we let you in on a secret? The Dao region, across the mountains from the Douro, is actually the birthplace of Portugal's most famous red grape variety, Tourgia Nacional. Two more secrets: The Dao's reds are vastly underappreciated bargains, red wines with fruit, structure and balance, and for those who are inclined to cellar not only their higher ticket purchases but also their everyday ones, these wines make wonderful mid-term, 4-7 year cellar candidates. Quinta de Saes is a blend of Tourgia, Alfrocheiro and Jaen, producing a wine with juicy, stylis... Read More »

2010 Quinta de Arcoso "Padrao dos Povos" Tras-os-Montes

Tras-os-Montes is one of Portugal's most interesting regions for red wine production, a place that is nestled in the northeastern corner of Portugal, land-locked and with a rather extreme continental climate with very warm summers and extremely cold winters. It is still little known outside of the country but is a region that has excellent, hilly granite terroirs. This example is a blend of Tinta Roriz, Tinta Amarela and Touriga Franca. (12/2011) Wine Spectator: "Lots of sweet dark plum and sweet cherry flavors dominate, with plenty of milk chocolate. Clean and balanced on the straightforward finish." (12/2010) K&L Notes: From the Producer: "Six Grapes is one of Graham's original Port marques. 2013 Anselmo Mendes "Contacto" Alvarinho Minho

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2013 Alvarinho Contacto seems to me to be a couple of steps behind the 2012, but that still leaves an awfully nice wine. Perfectly balanced and well-integrated, this features considerable grip and tension on the finish and subtle mid-palate concentration. With its typical focus and fine integration of parts, it should drink well this summer, but age decently, too. It shows considerable finesse, but don’t mistake that for wimpy and underachieving. It drank well into the 60sF, and continued to show persistence and grip on the finish. Drink now-2018. Th ...Read More »

The palate is nicely balanced with slightly tarry black fruit. It offers lifted acidity and a spirituous nature without any loss in tension and there is a pleasant kick of volatility towards the refined, harmonious finish. With time, there are subtle notes of dried fig and dates beginning to emerge and add to the complexity. The palate is medium-bodied and beautifully balanced on the supple, rounded entry. Anyone who is seeking out truly interesting, decidedly non cookie cutter, terroir inspired stuff owes it to themselves to dive head on into the wines of Bairrada, a region near Portugal's Atlantic coast. This delicious Douro red shows hallmark Douro aromatics of dark fruits, licorice and spices. Two likely contributing factors to this style are Casa Ferreirinha's experience as the original innovators in the production of fine Douro dry reds (Barca Velha, for example) and their light touch in the cellar.
