2013 San Lazzaro "Polesio" Marche

Poderi San Lazzaro is a 15 hectare, organically-farmed estate in the Marche, located between the Apennine Mountains and the Adriatic Sea. This lovely and wonderfully affordable Sangiovese shows hints of smoke to complement the floral, cherry-inflected nose. The fruit is clean on the palate, which is medium-bodied, with good acidity, soft tannins and a vein of minerality. Great for pasta night.

2011 Sartarelli Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi "Tralivio"

The Tralivio is made in a clean crisp style from some of Sartarelli's oldest vines. Antonio Galloni says, "When the mood strikes for Verdicchio, Sartarelli is often one of my go-to houses. The wines are loaded with varietal character, while the different bottlings are usually nicely differentiated and articulated."

2012 La Monacesca "Ecclesia" Chardonnay

92 points James Suckling: "A crystal-clear chardonnay with chalk, lavender and floral character plus sliced apples and pears. Full to medium body, bright acidity and a clean and exciting finish. A stylish wine from the Marche. Drink now." (5/2015) K&L Notes: La Monacesca’s idea for this wine is for a crisp white, fresh and vibrant and the perfect accompaniment to the Marche’s seafood bounty, especially shellfish. The grapes are harvested in the early part of September and then aged for a year in stainless before the wine is bottled. The wine has a super focus, bright and clean with an underlyi... 2012 La Monacesca Verdicchio di Matelica (1.5L)

93 points James Suckling: "Beautiful aromas of peaches and apples that follow through to a full body with layers of dried pineapple and peaches. A velvety texture from the phenolics in this. Long and flavorful. Layered, rich white that shows wonderful fruit." (12/2014) K&L Notes: Truly one of Italy's best white wines, Verdicchio is one of Italy's great white grapes and in this isolated Apennine Valley at 1200 feet magic happens. Not harvested until the first week of October this wine achieves complete physiological ripeness, that allows the flavors to deepen, allows the wine to show this uniqu... Read More »

2012 Luigi Giusti "Visciola" (500ml)

Luigi Giusti's Visciola is made in a centuries-old Marche tradition of making dessert wine with cherries. The production is actually quite complicated, as two varieties of cherries are processed separately with half of them being dried in the sun for 40 days. Grape wine from the current vintage is used as a base wine, but the fermented cherries are not pressed. Rather, a ripasso process is employed with some wine from the previous vintage. Sour cherries are then also utilized with residual sweetness retained. The resulting dessert wine has a potent sour ... Read More »

2010 La Monacesca "Camerte" Marche Rosso

91 points James Suckling: "A red with dried fruits, spice and hints of walnuts. Full body, soft and round with ripe berry, plum and coffee bean. Some stem and earth. Velvety tannins. Savory finish. A wine with robust character. Made of sangiovese and merlot. Drink now." (5/2015) K&L Notes: The 2010 vintage was outstanding for Marche reds. The core of Sangiovese gives this wine great length and the Merlot gives a supple, up-front richness. The nose shows a lot of complex plum and spicebox and then segues into a bit of leather. On the palate the wine’s richness is immediately evident, and as it ... Read More »

2002 Fattoria Le Terrazze Sassi Neri

Still considered a backwater appellation in this country, if there were more wines like this reserve red coming from Rosso Conero in the Marche, they'd soon be selling for Brunello prices! Fattoria Le Terrazze has belonged to the Terni Family since 1882, and the winery, still in use today, was built in the same year. Since then wine has always been produced with Montepulciano grapes grown on the estate. For the Sassi Neri only 100% Montelpulciano grapes are used, grown on brown calcareous soil overlying marl and gravel or sand on the estate vineyards at ... Read More »

2008 Fontezoppa "Falcotto" Serrapetrona

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2008 Serrapetrona Falcotto is a fleshy wine laced with wild cherries, rosemary, sage, spices and sweet herbs. The Falcotto has just enough density to match the quirkier notes of Vernaccia Nera. A plush finish rounds things out nicely. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2016." (6/2011) K&L Notes: 100% Vernaccia Nera.
