2010 Black Slate "Escala Dei" Vi de la Vila Priorat

This is a great introduction to Priorat, showing the tension between rich, intense, flavors and serious minerality. Composed of 80% Garnacha and 20% Cariñena from around the village of Porrera, the wine spends 20 months in a combination of French and American oak barrels. Jordi Vida is the winemaker. 2011 Noster "Inicial" Priorat

Here is a Priorat that is not at all shy or trying to hide its Mediterranean origins, a richer, fuller bodied style especially considering it's modest price. This is on the darker fruited side, generous and slightly savory, a well balanced, tasty blend of Garnacha, Carignane and just a tiny amount of Cabernet Sauvignon. Try this with your favorite recipe for braised or stewed lamb. (Joe Manekin, K&L Spanish & Portuguese wine buyer)

2012 Clos Figueras "Serras del Priorat" Priorat

91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright violet color. High-pitched red fruit and floral scents are complemented by bright mineral and white pepper qualities. Sweet and silky in texture, offering lively raspberry and rose pastille flavors and a hint of allspice. Closes smooth and long, with subtle tannins and a strong jolt of candied flowers." (9/2013)90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2012 Serras del Priorat is a great entry-level red produced with a blend of Mediterranean and French grapes aged for a short time in barrel, which feels a bit wild like a very young Northern Rhone with aromas of flowers, smoked meat a ...Read More »

2013 Sao del Coster "Pim Pam Poom" Priorat

One of the latest offerings from Priorat's Sao del Coster, this Garnacha based wine shows chewy red fruit flavors that betray admirable freshness, with a hint of macerated orange peel I frequently find in Spain's Mediterranean climate examples of Garnacha. This is not at all shy, but a great example of the intensity of flavor and beautiful fruit expression in the new era in Priorat. (Joe Manekin, K&L Spanish & Portuguese wine buyer)

2012 Mas d'en Compte "Black Slate - Porrera" Priorat New!
2012 Mas d'en Compte "Black Slate - Porrera" Priorat

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "From one of Priorat’s coolest micro-climates, this 2012 Black Slate is composed of 60% old vine Grenache (60+ years) and 40% old Carignan (80 years), and aged 12 months in concrete tanks, old wood foudres, and two-year-old barrels. It reveals lots of licorice, crushed wet rock, sweet blueberry and black raspberry fruit characteristics along with a full-bodied, moderately tannic mouthfeel. The tannins are sweet and well-integrated, and the wine is drinking beautifully already. For a relatively expensive Spanish appellation, this is an outright steal! Cons ...Read More »

Jancis Robinson: "This is a wine not to be missed, a firecracker: explosive wine, powerful yet tamed with intense black fruit, well integrated alcohol, earthy and black-tea aromas. The tannins are well resolved but still firm and the texture compact and concentrated. Very complex flavours. Long and imposing back palate." (09/2014)

Alvaro Palacios established his namesake winery in 1989. The flagship L’Ermita made its debut in 1993. Finca Dofi and L’Ermita vineyards are farmed biodynamically. 2001 Rotllan Torra "Amadis" Priorat

93-95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted just before it was bottled, there will be 4,800 bottles of the 2001 Amadis (a blend of 45% Grenache and 20% Carignan from 90-100 year old vines, and the rest younger vine Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Merlot). A sensational bouquet of blackberry liqueur, acacia flowers, crushed stones, and sweet oak emerges from a wine of great purity, layers of flavor, an opulent texture, and a sweet finish. This beauty should drink well young yet age effortlessly for 10-15 years. 2012 Álvaro Palacios "L'Ermita" Priorat (Previously $1000) Top Pick!
2012 Álvaro Palacios "L'Ermita" Priorat (Previously $1000)

According to Luis Gutierrez of the Wine Advocate, proprietor Álvaro Palacios spoke of the 2012 vintage as his best in his quarter century in Priorat. The steep "L'Ermita" vineyard is planted on a thick layer of schist and faces northeast. In 2006, Palacios stopped using Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend, focusing on Garnacha and Cariñena. Fewer than fifty cases were produced from the 2012 vintage.
