Caves Messias Santola "Crab Wine" Vinho Verde

Produced from Loureiro and Pederña grapes grown in the granitic soils of the Vinho Verde region, the Santola (or as we here are calling it, "the crab wine") is a delicious, spritely and refreshing white. It doesn't get much more traditional, thirst-quenching or seasonally perfect then this wine. Delicious, low in alcohol, slightly fizzy and way too easy to drink!

2011 Quinta do Vallado Douro

91 points James Suckling: "Tangy and fruity with plenty of dark fruits and lemon undertones. Full body, fine tannins and a fresh finish. Lovely balance." (8/2013) Wine Spectator: "A firm, fresh and balanced red, with muscular red plum, berry and currant flavors, supported by a sturdy structure. The minerally finish reveals hints of flint. (Web Only-2014)" K&L Notes: Quinta do Vallado's entry-level Douro D.O.C. bottling is sourced primarily from younger vineyards (80%) featuring Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, and Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo) plus an inclusion of old vineyards (20%) featuring those and other tradi... 2011 Churchill's "Estates" Douro

93 points Wine Spectator: "**Smart Buys** A meaty, rich and brooding red, offering plenty of mocha notes to the dark plum, dried blackberry and baker's chocolate flavors. Presents accents of smoked paprika midpalate, featuring a finish filled with restrained tannins. Drink now through 2020." (5/2014) K&L Notes: This dry red is grown on Churchill's estate vineyards, and offers a nuanced take on their fine Douro terroir. A blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, and Tinta Roriz, the selection of vineyard parcels can vary from year-to-year as different climate conditions can favor varietals a... Read More »

2013 Quinta de Raza Vinho Verde

Crisp, appley, and very refreshing, Raza Vinho Verde combines Arinto with Azal, Trajadura and Loureiro to create a lightly fizzy, delicious white that is surprisingly persistent and serious for this inexpensive a white. Quinta de Raza is located in the eastern portion of the Vinho Verde D.O., an area that has soils rich in quartz and other minerals that put their imprint on the wine. It's the perfect post work, pre-dinner wine, though it's also great at table, where it should handle grilled vegetables, seafood, and quick stir fries equally well. A refres... Read More »

2013 Anselmo Mendes "Contacto" Alvarinho Minho

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2013 Alvarinho Contacto seems to me to be a couple of steps behind the 2012, but that still leaves an awfully nice wine. Perfectly balanced and well-integrated, this features considerable grip and tension on the finish and subtle mid-palate concentration. With its typical focus and fine integration of parts, it should drink well this summer, but age decently, too. It shows considerable finesse, but don’t mistake that for wimpy and underachieving. It drank well into the 60sF, and continued to show persistence and grip on the finish. Drink now-2018. Th ...Read More »

Fonseca "Terra Bella" Reserve Port

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Terra Prima Organic Port is just terrific. The nose is so fresh and well defined with blackcurrant fruit infused with faint touches of mandarin, dark cherries, fresh dates and liquorice. The palate is nicely balanced with slightly tarry black fruit. It offers lifted acidity and a spirituous nature without any loss in tension and there is a pleasant kick of volatility towards the refined, harmonious finish. I appreciate the edginess and tension on this wine, a sense of elegance that I usually associate more with Taylors than with a Fonseca. This comes ...Read More »

2013 Aphros "Ten" Loureiro Vinho Verde

Aphros wines are all produced from certified biodynamic grapes, in an area where farming this way, due to the humid climate, is not easy. Proprietor Vasco Croft is commited to biodynamics and all of the Aphros wines are beautiful expressions of the terroir in the Lima sub-zone of Vinho Verde. "Ten" here refers to the very low 10% ABV. Produced from Loureiro grapes which are picked earlier than usual, the wine is incredibly bright, with lip smacking acidity and yet a balanced overall expression due to the very small amount of residual sugar. And, with a t... Read More »

Offers caressing tannins, with vanilla and strawberry cream notes that linger on the finish. Drink now through 2022." (3/2014) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2011 Touriga Nacional was tank-fermented, then aged in new French oak for 12 months. It is a friendly, middle-of-the-road Touriga that drinks nicely. Not overly complex, it still has some elegance in the mid-palate, classic Touriga floral aromatics and a ton of charm. To its credit, I liked it far better after 45 minu ...Read More »

2012 Aphros Loureiro Vinho Verde

Produced from Loureiro grown in the Lima sub-zone of the Vinho Verde region, this wine spends four months in tank on the lees, which marks it with a lovely creamy mid palate to complement the citrus and bright green fruits. There is almost a high quality Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc aspect to this wine (not the overcropped or early picked Sancerre; think Cottat!) Round and citric, there is a bright, focused finish to this Vinho Verde that makes it oh so drinkable. (Joe Manekin, K&L Portuguese & Spanish wine buyer)

2012 Casa Ferreirinha "Papa Figos" Douro

This delicious Douro red shows hallmark Douro aromatics of dark fruits, licorice and spices. On the palate, the flavors are surprisingly fresh and bright, particularly given the usual heft and lower acidity of the region's wines. Two likely contributing factors to this style are Casa Ferreirinha's experience as the original innovators in the production of fine Douro dry reds (Barca Velha, for example) and their light touch in the cellar. Simply a delicious bottle of red wine for the price. (Joe Manekin, K&L Spanish & Portuguese wine buyer)

1997 Fonseca Vintage Port

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Somewhat of a lightweight for Fonseca, but undeniably charming, this dark ruby/purple-colored wine offers a floral, exotic, flamboyant bouquet, a sweet, fleshy style, but not a great deal of weight or massiveness. Heady alcohol, sweet tannin, and a velvety texture make for a gorgeous finish. While I would have preferred to have seen more weight, structure, and intensity, this is an outstanding, albeit lighter than normal Fonseca. Anticipated maturity: now-2020." Ramos Pinto White Port

White port is one of the world's most civilized aperitifs, and we here at K&L think that the Ramos Pinto is one of the best. Made from Malvasia Fina and Codega grapes (mostly grown on the Ramos Pinto estate) that are picked quite ripe, this wine is then aged for three years in traditional port barrels called "pipes." Full-bodied and exotic, it is incomparable on the rocks with an orange twist. Since it has had extended barrel age and is fortified, it is no problem to have keep it in the refrigerator for a month after opening it, but I doubt it will last ... Read More »

(11/2014) K&L Notes: Not to be confused with the more expensive "Chryseia" bottling, this is still a very solid effort from the Prats and Symington team, a wine that shows the structure, fruit purity, and fine tannins of a vintage for the ages in 2011.

1994 Graham's Vintage Port

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "In a port tasting, tasting Graham's is almost like tasting a big, rich, succulent Merlot after a group of blockbuster, tannic Cabernets. Sweeter and more obvious than many ports, the opaque purple-colored 1994 is fruity, powerful, and rich, with an addictive hedonistic quality. It will be ready to drink in 8-10 years and keep for up to 30. As always, this is a showy, flamboyant port that has the advantage of being slightly sweeter than other 1994s. A great Graham's.
