Slower to reveal itself than other Big Basin wines, the Mandala Syrah is just starting to hint at its potential. It comes the winery's Estate vineyard in the Santa Cruz Mountains as well Fairview Ranch in the Santa Lucia Highlands. 1979 St. Clement Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (6L)

Not dissimilar to the wonderful '77--deep, rich and concentrated black fruits, ample tannins and drinking quite nicely at this point. 90 points from the Wine Spectator. 1980 St. Clement Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (6L)

The house and grounds that St. Clement Vineyards is situated on were constructed in 1878. Passed on to several different owners over the decades, winemaking has always occurred at the estate. The current winery, founded in 1975, seeks to maintain those deep roots in Napa Valley history. This vintage was produced by winemaker Dennis Johns during his 19-year stint at St. Clement. Though Johns has since moved onto other projects, he helped establish St. Clement's reputation for producing premium wines, particularly intense, fruit-driven Cabernet Sauvignon.
