2006 Terre de' Trinci "Ugolino" Sagrantino di Montefalco

Jancis Robinson: "Considered a riserva from a 45-year-old vineyard with ridiculously low yields of 30 hl. Vineyards in Montefalco and Bevagna, and the cantina is in Foligno. Beautiful mid ruby with the beginning of orange tinges. Savoury more than fruity at the moment and a little locked up on the nose. Yet it has a supple palate and not heavy at all. Rich tannins on the finish. Aged for at least 18 months in new barrique, which is pretty amazing, because you hardly notice it on the nose. It may have added more tannins, whereas with less new oak you would have had a reall ...Read More »

2005 Felsina Vin Santo (375ml)

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Made with Trebbiano, Malvasia and Sangiovese, the 2005 Vin Santo del Chianti Classico opens to a brilliant amber color and thick viscosity that hugs to the rim of the glass. Oak-driven tones of vanilla and caramel are immediately apparent, but quickly followed by candied fruit, butterscotch and orange peel. Clusters undergo a natural drying process on mats until February of the following year. The must is transferred to sealed oak casks containing the “mother,” or gelatinous remains from previous vintages. Fèlsina and consulting winemaker Franco Bernab ...Read More »

2004 Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino is awesome. This finessed, regal Brunello flows onto the palate with seamless layers of perfumed fruit framed by silky, finessed tannins. The wine remains extremely primary at this stage, and its full range of aromas and flavors have yet to emerge, but the sheer pedigree of this Brunello is unmistakable. The elegant, refined finish lasts an eternity, and subtle notes of menthol, spices, licorice and leather add final notes of complexity. The estate's 2004 Brunello is a wine to buy and bury in the deepest corner of the cell ...Read More »

2006 Trabucchi Amarone della Valpolicella

92 points Vinous: "Trabucchi's 2006 Amarone della Valpolicella explodes from the glass. Black cherry, tar, incense, smoke and licorice notes all take shape as this big, broad-shouldered wine shows off its personality. Another year or two in bottle should help the 2006 come together even more fully, but it is likely to remain a fairly powerful, hulking Amarone. Still, there is a lot to look forward to here." (3/2014) 91 points Wine Enthusiast: "Dark, thick and syrupy, this savory Amarone delivers notes of Indian spice, Teriyaki, molasses, plum and dark berry fruit. It has a noticeably sweet finish with ...Read More »

2004 La Campana Brunello di Montalcino

You are not likely to run into a bottle of wine from this illusive estate in Montalcino, and that is a real shame. Tiny production, old style, traditional Brunello. This shows notes of mushroom and vanilla, with spice and layers of tannin, all integrated and all ready to slice through your next rendition of roast pork loin or similarly full-bodied and rustic cuisine.

2006 ArPePe "Rocca del Piro" Grumello Riserva Valtellina Superiore

Established in 1984 for Arturo Pelizzatti Perego, and now run by Arturo's children Isabella, Emanuele and Guido, ArPePe makes rare wines that are a point of reference for the unique Valtellina terroir, where the famed Nebbiobo grape goes by the name Chiavennasca. New York Times wine writer Eric Asimov recently noted, "...no Italian-accented wine list can be considered in vogue these days without at least one of the excellent Valtellinas from ArPePe..." 2011 La Ghersa "Sivoy" Timorasso Monferrato Bianco

The grape is called Timorasso, and in case you didn't know, it's a local white grape that had nearly disappeared off the wine map of the world, and certainly would have if it weren't for the likes of a handful of Piedmontese vintners bent on saving the region's lesser-known wine styles. Not to use a much relied upon cliché, but this one really has to be tried to be believed. Complex doesn't even begin to describe the myriad of aromas and flavors: roasted nut, apricot, orange flower blossoms, river bed rock, ginger, vanilla ice cream.... All this in an ut... This is amazing wine, but it could still use some time. Pull the cork after 2012." (5/2012) 94 points Wine Spectator: "*Top 100 Wines of 2006* Aromas of currant, berry and light vanilla. Full-bodied and structured. Fine tannins but not giving much now. This is big and powerful. Needs lots of time. Best after 2010." (4/2006) Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Red-ruby. 2003 Feudi di San Gregorio "Serpico" Irpinia

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2003 is a fascinating Serpico. The wine boasts impressive concentration in its dark, rich fruit. This is an incredibly primary Serpico, with little in the way of tertiary development. Ideally, it is best left alone for another few years, but readers fortunate enough to own this are in for a thrilling ride once the wine opens up a bit. Today it remains tightly coiled but full of potential. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2023. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A pure expression of Chardonnay, the oak-aged 2011 Falesia is a creamy, buttery wine with roasted pineapple, vanilla, canned peach and flinty mineral. The wine is tonic and tight in the mouth with lingering notes of spice and smoke on the close." (8/2010) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is surprisingly hard and unyielding. Mentholated, balsamic notes add complexity to the dark fruit, followed by earthiness, leather; licorice and tobacco that emerge over time. There is nice depth and plushness to the fruit, but readers will need to be patient. (AG)" (4/2010)

2001 Talenti Brunello di Montalcino

92 points Wine Enthusiast. K&L's notes: 3 Stars! Broad and rich in the mouth were my first impressions of this wine. It gives me the impression of a very warm fall day, late afternoon, sitting outside under an umbrella, my skin is feeling the glow from being out in the sun earlier in the day. Languidly laying on a chaise lounge, drinking a beer and eating freshly cut prosciutto and melon. Muscles feeling the days work and they throb with the satisfaction of hard, physical labor. Full-bodied and velvety textured. So beautiful to drink now, but obviously has a long future ahead." (3/2012) 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1997 Ornellaia (magnum) is a big, fat wine endowed with tons of fruit. Sweet and rather soft on entry (again due to 2000's warm weather), then nicely stuffed with surprisingly energetic red fruit in the middle. Not a big red, and the serious tannins need time to integrate, so the wine should only become more elegant as it develops. Best from 2014 through 2026." I've know the owners of this winery since 1984 and to watch the growth of quality through all of their painstaking effort is quite rewarding. Since 1995 their wines have just exploded with quality. Their greatest quality for me is the balance, the wine has great density, richness and extraordinary aromatics with a seemingly unending finish. Balance however is the key to great wine, no one part of the wine outweighs the other and the flavors are symphonic in nature. 1997 Gaja "Sperss" Nebbiolo Langhe

99 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A virtually perfect effort is the 1997 Sperss (30,000 bottles), which represents the essence of truffles, earth, and black cherries in its striking aromatics and multidimensional, opulent, full-bodied palate. The acidity seems low because of the huge glycerin levels and prodigious concentration of fruit, but I suspect it is normal in the scheme of oenological measurement. This profound wine requires 3-4 years of cellaring, and should age well for 30-35 years. (RP)" (6/2001) 95-97 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Saturated deep ruby.
