2010 Viña Real Crianza Rioja Top Pick!
2010 Viña Real Crianza Rioja

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "No 2011 had been bottled yet, so I tasted the 2010 Crianza from hand-harvested grapes from Rioja Alavesa and produced in the Vina Real winery. As with the Reserva, the Crianza is usually a blend of 90% Tempranillo complemented with small amounts of Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano. 2010 had textbook climatic conditions to be a great vintage. The destemmed grapes carry out both alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in stainless steel vats and the wine ages for some 14 months in French and American oak barrels. This 2010 has a nice bright cherry color with a ...Read More »

2009 Bodegas Muga "Selección Especial" Reserva Rioja Top Pick!
2009 Bodegas Muga "Selección Especial" Reserva Rioja

95 points Wine Spectator: "*Highly Recommended* Powerful yet harmonious, this rich red delivers black cherry, licorice, fresh herb, smoke and mineral flavors that mingle seamlessly over firm, well-integrated tannins, while balsamic-tinged acidity drives the flavors through the long, spicy finish. Drink now through 2025." (9/2013)93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Opaque ruby. Sexy, oak-spiced aromas of red- and blackcurrant, cherry and vanilla, with a bright floral accent. Lush and palate-staining, offering intense dark berry preserve and cherry-cola flavors that become spicier with air. Deep and rich but surpris ...Read More »

2008 Miguel Merino "Vitola" Reserva Rioja Top Pick!
2008 Miguel Merino "Vitola" Reserva Rioja

*A K&L direct import! This is our latest arrival from Miguel Merino, whom we like to call "the hardest working man in Rioja." Having begun his humble "retirement project" in the early 1990s by restoring an older bodega just down the hill from the historic town of Briones, Miguel either owns or rents to own a total of around 8 hectares of vines, all of which are located in Briones; not only is this village specific Rioja, but it happens to come from one of the most sought after villages in all of Rioja Alta, where many top bodegas have some of their most ... 2009 Bodegas Casa Juan Señor de Lesmos Crianza Rioja Top Pick!
2009 Bodegas Casa Juan Señor de Lesmos Crianza Rioja

As is the case with so many other great spots in Spain, Bodega Casa Juan is located opposite the village church, in the beautiful walled pueblo of Laguardia. The winery is a converted flour mill, featuring concrete tanks for fermenting and blending the wine, and for ageing, barrels that are used for up to seven years. These are traditional Riojas in elaboration and spirit, though the site specificity of their Laguardia and Villabuena vineyards confers a fruit character all its own to these wines. And what fruit! Especially in the great 2009 vintage, the ... Read More »

1999 Bodegas Puelles Gran Reserva Rioja Top Pick!
1999 Bodegas Puelles Gran Reserva Rioja

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1999 Gran Reserva has an enticing red cherry, soy and cedar-scented bouquet that is reminiscent of an old Burgundy. The palate is very well-balanced with fine acidity and edgy tannin. There are notes of fresh red cherries and orange rind interlaced by leather on the tart, highly enjoyable, zesty finish. Drink now-2018. (NM)" (8/2012) K&L Notes: Wow--this is spectacular Gran Reserva! Made in a traditional style with earthy red fruit aromas, and in this relatively cooler, damper vintage, a slightly Burgundian profile. The wine features good acidity, minerality, and... 2013 Bodegas Puelles Blanco Rioja

Jesús Puelles is one of the most talented vignerons in Rioja. Hailing from a long line of vineyard worker/owners, Puelles knows the terruño in his little slice of land in the Rioja Alta town of Abalos. Most of the grapes for his red wines come from his own 20 hectares, which are north-facing and located at 600 meters in altitude, affording the visitor with one of the most dramatically beautiful views of Rioja's main mountain ranges: the Sierra Cantabria mountains immediately to the north and the Sierra de la Demanda mountains to the south. 2005 La Rioja Alta "Viña Ardanza" Reserva Rioja Top Pick!
2005 La Rioja Alta "Viña Ardanza" Reserva Rioja

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Cropped from a vintage deemed almost perfect, the 2005 Viña Ardanza Reserva follows the same varietal mix found in the last vintages; 80% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha. The grapes are always sourced from the same vineyards, 30-year-old Tempranillo from Fuenmayor and Cenicero in Rioja Alta and Garnacha from Tudelilla in Rioja Baja. In the case of the 2005, it was racked six times during its elevage. This comes from older vines of tempranillo with an average age of 20 years or more. Maceration is a little longer. Six months in new French oak and then 24 months in old French and American oak barrels. One and a half years in bottle." Round in the palate, with clean flavors, supple, balanced, very Rioja. It grows on you as it also improves with air and gets more focused. 30,000 bottles were produced. Lots of strawberry and cherry notes as well as surprising body and underlying power give this a traditional, old style rose character. With both freshness and flavor intensity, this surprisingly fine effort should drink well for a year." A glass-coating opaque purple, it offers up an alluring bouquet of pain grille, scorched earth, leather, espresso, black cherry, and blackberry liqueur. The palate is crisp, with good acidity and length. The light to medium-bodied palate shows fully resolved tannins, great acidity and pure, pungent flavors that linger in the mouth forever and that can only be Rioja. A blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha and the remaining 10% Mazuelo and Graciano aged for a long time in oak and bottled before release. This is a practice quite common from yesteryear, but that is a true rarity today. There is a wonderful element of whimsy and joy at this tiny, family bodega located in Laguardia. The elephant logo, the onsite African art museum, as well as the name (there is no Señor de Lesmos, as it turns out) all speak to the family's joie de vivre and sense of humor. There is nothing funny about the quality of these wines, though. It’s produced from a blend of 89% Tempranillo and 11% Mazuelo (aka Carinena), a difficult grape that is in high esteem at the winery as they consider it adds acidity and aging potential to the blend and has been selected specifically to make part of the flagship wine’s blend. The nose was suffering some bottle shock, but it certainly demonstrates intense floral aromas coupled with vibrant cassis fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine, structured tannins that, even at this premature juncture, are obvious. Lively, with a balsamic finish. (Web Only—2014)"

2001 Bagordi Reserva Rioja (Previously $30)

Located in the Rioja Baja town of Andosilla, Bagordi is making some of the region's very best wines. Having recently tasted this 2001, as well as the very good 1999, I was reminded of the fact that the best wines from Rioja Baja absolutely can compete with the wines in Rioja Alta and Alavesa. Bagordi's 2001 Reserva is a delicious, incredibly complete wine. Aromas of blackberries and hints of dark chocolate lead to a palate that is structured, full of dark fruit, particularly lively mixed berry flavors. My notes say the word "structured" twice, so I think... Read More »

2007 Bodegas Lan "Viña Lanciano" Reserva Rioja

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2007 Vina Lanciano Reserva is sourced from, and carries the name of, the winery’s signature vineyard, the 72-hectare Lanciano estate along the River Ebro, northeast of Fuenmayor. There is no doubt this is a good vineyard, which seems to have behaved quite well in such a cold and difficult vintage. The wine has some notes of exotic wood, blueberries, star anise and incense, and a supple and tasty palate with an attractive herbaceous note that gives it freshness. (LG)" (12/2013) Wine Spectator: "This lean red shows a mix of sweet and savory notes, with dried cherry and v ...Read More »

2008 Bodegas Olarra "Cerro Añon" Reserva Rioja

90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Deep ruby. Ripe cherry, dark berries and vanilla on the perfumed nose. Smooth and accessible, offering sweet cherry-vanilla and coconut flavors and a hint of mocha. Fine-grained tannins come on late, adding shape to the long, smooth, appealingly sweet finish. Shows little of the tangy edge that I associate with so many wines from this vintage." (9/2013) K&L Notes: Based in Logroño, Bodegas Olarra is not a new bodega on the block, having produced wines for over 40 years now. In fact, we have been luck enough to try several much older vintages of these wines, both ... Read More »

2007 Señorío de P. Peciña Reserva Rioja

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2007 Señorío de P. Peciña Reserva is mostly Tempranillo with a pinch of Graciano and Garnacha from chalky soils that fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in used American oak barrels for three years in the most traditional way. The wine has an evolved color and a tertiary nose showing signs of bottle-aging, and good complexity as the aromas of American oak evolve and develop more nuances and complexity in a textbook Rioja way. At the same time the palate is really complete and balanced with good weight of fruit and superb acidity that should ...Read More »

2011 'B' de Basilio Blanco Rioja (Previously $50)

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2011 B de Basilio white is mostly Garnacha Blanca with some Viura from the Rioja Alavesa region. The bunches are pressed and the must fermented in oak barrels where they aged in contact with their lees for nine months. It’s very young and ungiving, it's quite closed, with a balsamic and yeasty character with some hay and straw notes. The palate is still marked by the oak and reveals some smoky yellow plum flavors with good acidity, clean and persistent. It’s a big wine, which manages to keep the freshness. Drink 2014-2018. 1969 Bodegas Muga "Prado Enea" Crianza Rioja

While Bodegas Muga has been operating in Rioja since the 1930s, it was not until the tail end of the 1960s that they started bottling their own wine for commercial purposes. In fact, we have heard that 1969 was their very first vintage! Thought 1969 is not a particularly well regarded vintage, this wine is holding up admirably. It is from our Basque restaurant cellar connection, so the provenance is terrific. If you're chasing after a 1969, this is a solid bottle for a great price. (Joe Manekin, K&L Spanish wine buyer)

2007 Bodegas Riojanas Monte Real Reserva Rioja

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2007 Monte Real Reserva has aromas of cigar ash, forest floor and cherries, and a dusty palate with a slightly dry finish. Drink 2014-2017. (LG)" (12/2013) K&L Notes: Bodegas Riojanas is a more than century old, family-owned winery and one of the early pioneers of modern winemaking in Rioja. Today, you could say that Riojanas is one of the more traditionally oriented wineries in the region. Stylistically, Monte Real is the bolder, riper sibling of Viña Albina, produced from 100% Tempranillo in their hometown of Cenicero. In 2007, Monte Real shows lots of meaty, s... Read More »

2010 Basilio Izquierdo "Acodo" Blanco Rioja

Wine & Spirits: "A blend of Viura (80 percent) with Garnacha Blanca, this is all about leesy, nutty flavors. It’s a lean, savory white to serve with duck liver pâté." (12/2013) K&L Notes: Longtime former Cune winemaker Basilio Izquierdo has been hard at work in his Laguardia winery, producing excellent, highly original Rioja wines from older vineyards he personally sources for the high quality of their fruit. This particular wine is produced primarily from old, massale selection Viura blended with Garnacha Blanca. The vineyard, located in San Vicente, has very poor, minimal top soil ... Read More »
