2010 Bodegas Casa Juan Señor de Lesmos Crianza Rioja Top Pick!
2010 Bodegas Casa Juan Señor de Lesmos Crianza Rioja

As is the case with so many other great spots in Spain, Bodega Casa Juan is located opposite the village church, in the beautiful walled pueblo of Laguardia. The winery is a converted flour mill, featuring concrete tanks for fermenting and blending the wine, and for ageing, barrels that are used for up to seven years. These are traditional Riojas in elaboration and spirit, though the site specificity of their Laguardia and Villabuena vineyards confers a fruit character all its own to these wines. And what fruit! In the spectacular 2010 vintage, the Crian... Read More »

2012 Bodegas Palacios Remondo "La Montesa" Crianza Rioja Top Pick!
2012 Bodegas Palacios Remondo "La Montesa" Crianza Rioja

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "2012 was one of the driest and warmest years on record (the third driest August since 1961, the fourth warmest since 1961). The 2012 Rioja Crianza la Montesa is a blend of 80% Garnacha, 15% Tempranillo and 5% Mazuelo (Cariñena) from grapes grown in the La Montesa estate in Alfaro, Rioja Baja where the red Garnacha reigns over Tempranillo. The wine is getting lighter and more ethereal, but this ripe 2012 has a heady nose of cherries in liqueur but also black and sour cherries, unnoticeable oak plus just a pinch of dark spices. The palate is soft and silky ...Read More »

1999 Bodegas Puelles Gran Reserva Rioja Top Pick!
1999 Bodegas Puelles Gran Reserva Rioja

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1999 Gran Reserva has an enticing red cherry, soy and cedar-scented bouquet that is reminiscent of an old Burgundy. The palate is very well-balanced with fine acidity and edgy tannin. There are notes of fresh red cherries and orange rind interlaced by leather on the tart, highly enjoyable, zesty finish. Drink now-2018. (NM)" (8/2012) K&L Notes: Wow--this is spectacular Gran Reserva! Made in a traditional style with earthy red fruit aromas, and in this relatively cooler, damper vintage, a slightly Burgundian profile. The wine features good acidity, minerality, and... 2005 Bodegas Casa Juan Señor de Lesmos Reserva Rioja Top Pick!
2005 Bodegas Casa Juan Señor de Lesmos Reserva Rioja

92 points James Suckling: "This has a beautiful depth of fruit with spice and dark fruits. Hints of parsley and cilantro. Full and super silky with a long and beautiful finish." (5/2013) K&L Notes: Composed of the same grapes in the same percentages as the Crianza, the Reserva is a barrel selection of wines that Angel feels can undergo longer aging in barrel and then in bottle. Aged a total of 27 months in barrels, then into concrete for more than a year, the Reserva also sees bottle aging until Angel deems it ready for release. This wine ramps up the intensity of the Crianza, with more pungen... Read More »

2005 La Rioja Alta "Viña Ardanza" Reserva Rioja Top Pick!
2005 La Rioja Alta "Viña Ardanza" Reserva Rioja

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Cropped from a vintage deemed almost perfect, the 2005 Viña Ardanza Reserva follows the same varietal mix found in the last vintages; 80% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha. The grapes are always sourced from the same vineyards, 30-year-old Tempranillo from Fuenmayor and Cenicero in Rioja Alta and Garnacha from Tudelilla in Rioja Baja. In the case of the 2005, it was racked six times during its elevage. The one bottle I tasted first was a bit evolved with plenty of cigar ash, incense and leather along with hung game (woodcock came to mind). But the palate was ...Read More »

2008 Miguel Merino "Vitola" Reserva Rioja Top Pick!
2008 Miguel Merino "Vitola" Reserva Rioja

*A K&L direct import! This is our latest arrival from Miguel Merino, whom we like to call "the hardest working man in Rioja." Having begun his humble "retirement project" in the early 1990s by restoring an older bodega just down the hill from the historic town of Briones, Miguel either owns or rents to own a total of around 8 hectares of vines, all of which are located in Briones; not only is this village specific Rioja, but it happens to come from one of the most sought after villages in all of Rioja Alta, where many top bodegas have some of their most ... 2014 Bodegas Puelles Blanco Rioja

Jesús Puelles is one of the most talented vignerons in Rioja. Hailing from a long line of vineyard worker/owners, Puelles knows the terruño in his little slice of land in the Rioja Alta town of Abalos. Most of the grapes for his red wines come from his own 20 hectares, which are north-facing and located at 600 meters in altitude, affording the visitor with one of the most dramatically beautiful views of Rioja's main mountain ranges: the Sierra Cantabria mountains immediately to the north and the Sierra de la Demanda mountains to the south. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2011 Crianza, pure Tempranillo aged for one year in barrel, is a textbook, restrained, serious Crianza combining balsamic and spicy aromas with notes of ripe red and black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied, clean and with abundant, slightly grainy tannins that require food. 70,000 bottles. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This 2004, from a superb vintage shows a beautiful light red color with a brick rim and a superb nose redolent of balsamic woods, spices, leather, well-hung meat, incense and truffles. The light to medium-bodied palate shows fully resolved tannins, great acidity and pure, pungent flavors that linger in the mouth forever and that can only be Rioja. This is a wine to smell over and over again. It might sound like an exaggeration, but this wine is still too young and you should wait a little bit and drink the superb 2001 vintage which should still be available on the market while this one matures in bottle. 2013 Bodegas Casa Juan Señor de Lesmos "Cuarteto" Rioja

There is a wonderful element of whimsy and joy at this tiny, family bodega located in Laguardia. The elephant logo, the onsite African art museum, as well as the name (there is no Señor de Lesmos, as it turns out) all speak to the family's joie de vivre and sense of humor. There is nothing funny about the quality of these wines, though. All estate fruit, hand harvested and carefully vinified with native yeasts, this is a hand-sewn wine with the purity, texture and elegance to prove it. 1982 Bodegas Olarra "Cerro Añón" Reserva Rioja

When this bottle is on, it has to be one of my all time favorite examples of mature Rioja. Winemaker Ezequiel "El Brujo" García (ex Cune in the 1960's and a portion of the 70's) described the Cerro Añon to me as being more masculine, a very old school Riojano way of referring to a wine as "Burgundian" (think: LdH Viña Bosconia, always in the Burgundy bottle). Accorindg to García, Cerro Añón always had a hefty chunk of Mazuelo and some Garnacha to brighten things up a bit. Miguel found success every step of the way, and then decided that rather than retire, he wanted to fulfill his dream of owning vines and making wine. Based in the Rioja Alta town of Briones, Miguel Merino makes, as he likes to put it, an "updated classic" style of Rioja, all from his own two hectares of vines and several hectares of vineyards owned by a close friend. All the fruit is from sloped vineyards (Miguel is a... Read More »

2009 Bodegas Casa Juan Señor de Lesmos Crianza Rioja (1.5L)

Lesmos is back, and now in magnums, the ideal size for parties and for extended aging in your cellar! All estate fruit, hand harvested, and carefully vinified with native yeasts, this is a hand sewn wine with the purity, texture and elegance to prove it. Produced from 85% Tempranillo and 15% Mazuelo, the wine shows a rather Burgundian nose of cherries and plums, opening to reveal a hint of sandalwood that leads to a wonderful palate that opens with tangy cherry flavors that are persistent and presented on an elegantly textured frame. Terrific acidity an... Read More »

2010 Bodegas Las Orcas Solar de Randez Reserva Rioja

91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "(100% tempranillo; fermented in stainless steel and then aged in French oak for two years): Saturated ruby. Powerful aromas of ripe cherry and blackberry, with suave floral and mineral notes and a suggestion of vanilla. Full, fleshy dark berry and floral pastille flavors are lifted by a smoky mineral note, gaining energy with air. Finishes lively, focused and persistent, showing a hint of mocha and even tannins." (9/2014) K&L Notes: Bodegas Las Orcas is a family winery with a bodega  just outside the town wall of Laguardia, and vineyards located nearby in the Rioja A... Read More »

2005 Bodegas Ontañon Gran Reserva Rioja

Ontañon is an amazing bodega, located just outside of Logroño, but sourcing fruit from their own vineyards in Rioja Baja. These are high elevation, fairly isolated, wild vineyards, many of which are gently sloping and on poor, stony soils. The wines here show the richness and generosity of fruit for which tempranillo and garnacha-based Rioja Baja wines are known, but with the added elegance, texture and purity that only older vines from top notch vineyard sites can provide. The Gran Reserva is a blend of 95% tempranillo and 5% graciano. It is aged for 24... Read More »

2010 Marqués de Vargas Reserva Rioja

91 points Vinous: "Deep red. Oak-spiced aromas of ripe cherry and blackberry, with notes of vanilla and coconut building in the glass. Still showing a youthfully oaky character to the sweet dark fruit, mocha and vanilla flavors. Clings with very good smoky intensity and persistence, with dusty tannins adding shape. (JR)" (11/2015) K&L Notes: This Logroño-based producer has a loyal following in Spain, particularly in the restaurant and pintxos scene in San Sebastián Vasco (this is often a good indicator of a quality Rioja!). Known for their strong, richly fruited style, Marques de Varga... Read More »

1997 Bodegas Las Orcas Solar de Randez Reserva Rioja

Every now and then, we come across a perfectly aged gem of a wine, showing optimally and without any need for additional cellar time. In this case, the wine comes direct from the cool, dimly lit cellars of Bodegas Las Orcas, just outside of the medieval walled village of Laguardia. Rioja continues to be one of the most underrated wine regions for elegant, ageworthy, value priced wines that consistently deliver lots of pleasure at the table. Classically styled, this wine shows all the nuances of flavor and elegance one could hope for in a mature medium-bo... 2008 Contino Reserva Rioja

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2008 Reserva is a blend of 85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano and 5% between Mazuelo and Garnacha, inox fermented and aged in used oak barrels of which 40% were made of American wood and the rest were French. 2008 was a challenging vintage and they didn’t produce many of the special wines that year, so the best fruit went towards the Reserva. It has a very lactic, sweet nose, with notes of orange rind and cherries. As Contino is a warm vineyard, the cold years make for quite balanced wines, and this 2008 has good acidity, not terribly complex, but clean w ...Read More »

2006 Miguel Merino Gran Reserva Rioja

Miguel Merino makes, as he likes to put it, an "updated classic" style of Rioja, all from his own 2 hectares of vines and several hectares of vineyards owned by a close friend. All the fruit is from sloped vineyards (Miguel is a fan of his slopes) within the cooler climate Rioja Alta town of Briones, which makes his wine a terrific showcase of the terroir (especially in a region where wines blended from various villages are more often the norm). This Gran Reserva is from some of their oldest Tempranillo and Graciano vines, planted in 1931 and 1946. It is... Read More »
